Chapter 21: Council and ReaversAlaric sat at the head of the long council table. His expression was stoic as he listened to his advisors. The room was filled with the soft murmur of voices, discussing various improvements to the kingdom. The council had been convened to review the progress in agriculture, infrastructure, and military defenses, and for the most part, everything seemed to be falling into place. The roads were being expanded, trade was flourishing, and the people were content—at least, for the moment."Your Majesty," began the royal treasurer, a stout man with thinning hair, "The kingdom's coffers have seen a considerable increase in wealth since the new trade routes were established. Our relationship with the eastern provinces has proven profitable, and—""That will be enough," Alaric interrupted, waving his hand dismissively. Back in her world, the only things she ever had to clean were her small apartment and her office desk. That, she could handle. But here? She had to clean entire palaces. She sighed, letting the rag fall limply in her hand as she stared at the endless corridors around her. This place was enormous compared to her world, where life was simple—annoying, but simple. She could almost laugh at the irony. Back in her world, her biggest worries were work deadlines and cleaning up after herself. Now she was stuck polishing royal statues. But then, as she paused in thought, a strange sense of relief washed over her. Somehow, she had managed to survive here. Somehow, she had adapted. She'd even managed to navigate the te
