Chapter Eight

Many days passed, Taiwo and Keyinde learnt many things in the wolf way, almost forgetting their human natural behavior. They only talked like humans when they were alone together. On the same tree they used to talk alone, they talked about their progress.

Keyinde: Hmmm....now we're gradually becoming animals in human form.

Taiwo: Yes!! Learning their ways is the only way to survive alone in this jungle.

Keyinde: That's true though!! Mother is watching over us everyday.

Taiwo: I know she'd be happy with us wherever she is right now. I miss her a lot.

Keyinde: I miss her too

Just then they heard the loud whistle of the bird in the sky passing a message throughout the jungle that the wolves have done the unthinkable, making mancubs their alpha and beta. Almost immediately, all the wolves stood, ready to fight anyone who trespassed their territory. For thousands of years in the jungle, the wolves have stood together with other animals. Other animals fought them for that and later gave up so they left but they couldn't bear seeing human in the jungle because they believed humans destroyed their first home. They they came together and decided to fight the wolves. It baffled Taiwo and Keyinde alot.

Taiwo: Other animals have risen against the wolf pack because we're the leader of the wolves. We have to do something

Keyinde thought for moments but no tangible solution crossed her mind. She talked with fear.

Keyinde: I guess we're all going to die

Taiwo looked at her and saw fear written all over her as was shaking. He also didn't know what to do. Days passed, the wolves had meetings upon meetings but they couldn't get any solution. The day for war between the wolves and other animals was getting closer. It was so obvious that the wolves were all going to die. The night before the war, Taiwo sat alone thinking about what was going to happen.

Taiwo (soliloquizing): Hmmmmmmmmmm!!!!

He looked into the heavens with great sadness.

Taiwo: Iya mi olufunke!! Nibo lewa?? All the animals are fighting against your children. Are you going to let your children die without fulfilling the promise? Are you going to make your suffering wasted?

He waited for some minutes.

Taiwo: I need an answer from you. Please tell me what to do.

He waited and waited for his mother's response but none came.

Taiwo: You're not answering me? I thought you were watching us but it's clear now that you aren't. You just left us in this dreadful world alone. You're......

He didn't finished talking when tears started running down his cheeks. Just then, he saw ants matching few steps away from him. Something prompted him to watch closely. He saw them surrounding one aunt. They came one by one to fight the aunt in the middle but it defeated them all. Soon, they all matched away. Within minutes, he slept off where he sat and had a dream seeing his mother smiling at him. Then she said "you shall not die". What she meant by that, he didn't know. The next day, he met with his sister who seemed to be sad. They sat together talking.

Taiwo: What's wrong? You were afraid yesterday and now you're sad. Something must have happened in my absence.

She looked at her brother sadly.

Keyinde: I don't think we can escape death today because the animals will be here soon. Yesterday, the wolves were worried in your absence. Though they were ready to fight to death for their alpha but your absence sent fear down their spines but thank the gods I was able to convince them you didn't abandon them. They are good diggers so I told them to dig a very deep and wide pit round their den so when the animals arrive, they won't be able to pass. They worked tirelessly over the night but what I'm makes me sad is that I the animals are much. What if they find a way to cross the pit?

Taiwo: Then we all will be dead.

The fear of death made him felt cold shivers in his spine. Just then, the animals arrived with full force. The wolves were ready to attack. The animals ran. They started retreating when they saw some of them falling in the pit. The alphas of the animals decided the bigger ones should uproot trees and make a passage over the pit. What a great doom for the wolves!!!! Taiwo came forward, seeing the doom that was about to befall them. He looked up into the heavens again and called upon his mother.

Taiwo: Mother!!! I know you're still up there watching us. Don't let your children die like this!!

Then he looked down. He saw an ant walking on his foot. Then he remembered the ants he saw and the dream he had. His mother never left him. She already answered his call when he called her the night before but he wasn't wise and calm enough to notice it. Then he knelt down, packed a little sand and rubbed his long hair with it. His mother spoke to him in his head.

Olufunke: My son!!! My son!!! My son!!! Never you believe that I left you and your sister alone in this dreadful world because I'm always with you. Fight to win and from this day, you shall become the king of the jungle.

Taiwo: Thank you mother!!

He started challenging all the animals to fight him alone and if they won, they can take on the wolves but if he won, he'll become leader to them all. They all agreed to his challenge. The rhino came forward, running with a very full speed. Taiwo picked his spear, narrowed his vision to the eyes of the beast before throwing. It died sliding till it stopped in front of him. The lion came forward. He knew it was going to pounce while running so he slided on the run and thrusted his spear directly in it's stomach. Same fate went to the tiger, leopard and cheetah. This sent fear down the spine of the others but the elephant was still adamant because of it's enormousity. It came forward to fight. Then, Taiwo looked up again and prayed for his strength. The elephant charged and Taiwo too. He dropped his spear and ran towards the largest beast in the jungle, climbed it with it's tusk and gave it a very deadly blow on its head. The elephant fell very weak on the ground. Others became very afraid of Taiwo. The bowed before him, including his sister and the wolves. That was the first time the jungle had only one leader.

Since the beginning of time, the jungle never had a leader except for the alphas of the different animals but when the twin came, everything changed. The alpha elephant, who was always the most strongest alpha in the jungle came under the control of Taiwo with just a single deadly blow on its head. Before the war between the wolves and the jungle, the elephants were the strongest in the jungle and the alpha elephant has been the most strongest of all. Even the large snakes, as cunning and wise as the were, couldn't beat the alpha elephant in battle because a single step will kill them one by one. The animals believed that the elephants created the jungle. They used their tusks to uproot trees to make pathways for rivers to flow, to make footpaths and boundaries for the animal clans. That's why all animals bow at the sight of an elephant but then, everything changed with a single blow from Taiwo. The alpha elephant whose name was Elemundo and wolverine became his two best friends and servants while the other alphas became his council chiefs. One night, Taiwo and keyinde sat alone talking after having their dinner.

Taiwo: You've really become a good cook in the past weeks now

He said as he munched his cooked meat lavishly while keyinde watched and smiled as she gently ate hers

keyinde: Thank you brother!! constant practice makes one perfect.

Taiwo: Hmmmmmm that's true!!! you've been doing the cooking since when mother died. I'm not if I've ever lit up fire for cooking.

She laughed as he said that.

Keyinde: well, I can teach you if you want.

Taiwo: Come teach me outside the den.

They both smiled, holding their hands as they went out. Keyinde picked three big stones and set it in a triangular shape, took some sticks and dried leaves and set it straight to the center of the stones from the three different directions.

Keyinde: Pick a stone and light fire on the dried leaves. The sticks will make it burn and ready for cooking.

He did as she told him

Taiwo: So, if the sticks burnout, I'll put more stick.

Keyinde: Oh yes that's right. That's how to light fire for cooking.

Taiwo: Pretty much easier than I thought. Hey!! let's stroll out please.

keyinde: Okay.

Taiwo put off the fire and they both went out for a stroll. Animals bowed at their feet as they walked through.

Keyinde: This is how it feels to be royal. Look at how these animals are bowing to us. I'm sure mother would be happy in heaven.

Taiwo: Elédùmarè, the God of all the gods has sent her as an angel to guide and protect us in every challenge we face because he knows we're going to triumph at last.

Keyinde: Yes but this isn't what we really want. Mother used to talk about the prophecy. You know the prophecy was her last wish from us and we must honour her words by making it a reality.

Taiwo sighed, stopped, held her hands and looked her in the eyes.

Taiwo: You don't need to remind me of that because I'd never forget that and you know.

Keyinde: I know but we still got to talk about it seldomly so we won't be engrossed with everything we've achieved here.

Taiwo: Hmmmmmm!!!!

He hugged is sister passionately.

Taiwo: Thank you so much for being there for me.

Keyinde: I'm just obeying what mother said. It's her wish that we stick together forever.

Just then, their mother appeared to them.

Olufunke: Children!!! Children!!!

The looked back and saw their mother. They bowed.

Taiwo: Mother!!!

Keyinde: Mother!!

Olufunke: Get up my children!!

They got up.

Olufunke: I'm really proud of the both of you!! You really make God proud too but this isn't what he wants. You must fulfill my last wish and make Oluyole kingdom rise again.

Taiwo: Mother!! I promise we're going to make her rise again. you and God will be with us and that day, Elédùmarè will bless us and we're going to make sacrifices for him.

Mother: I'm proud of you. Keyinde! Do not leave your brother alone. Be the mother I couldn't be and be a very good sister to him.

Keyinde: I won't leave him mama!!

Olufunke: And I will keep watching over you in heaven.

She disappeared. Taiwo looked up.

Taiwo: We're going to fulfill your wish and make you happy.

Keyinde: We got to go back to the den now.

They went back home.

As the seconds turned to minutes, minutes to hours, hours to days, days to weeks, weeks to months and months to years, so was the bond between the twins and among the animals grew stronger and stronger. Many years in the jungle, the king and queen of the jungle had grown so much bigger and stronger than they ever imagined. As strong as the elephants were, a roar from Taiwo made them lay low and bow to him while keyinde fighting was no match to no one around except her brother. She has watched her brother fought big beasts that troubled the jungle with skills and strength that she couldn't defeat. As grown men and women, they had to get married and have kids so what happened?

Taiwo caught the sight of his sister as she smiled while eating.

Taiwo: Why are you smiling? What's making you happy?

She kept smiling. Then he looked around to see if anyone or anything was around that made her smile and he saw two rats copulating gently.

Taiwo: Wow!! That's it. A sexual sight of two rats is making you smile, right?

She kept smiling, then she replied.

Keyinde: What's the bond between them that makes them do that?

He thought and scratched his head for a while.

Taiwo: Hmmmmmm!!! I really don't know but let's keep watching them till they're done.

Keyinde: It's an interesting sight watching them compulate with themselves.

About thirty minutes later, the rats were done and were leaving when Taiwo called and asked them the same question his sister asked him, of which they got an answer, then he dismissed them.

Taiwo: Heard what the rats said? They love themselves that's why they could have sex with themselves to make their babies.

Keyinde: Hmmmmmm!!! Love!!!

Taiwo: Of course!!

Keyinde: Since mother's demise, I've never loved anyone else except you.

Taiwo: Me too, I've never loved anyone else except you.

She stood up and walked slowly and to where her brother sat and sat on his thighs.

She felt sad.

Olufunke: Nevertheless, just like the first man and woman were punished, you'll also be punished. You will leave the jungle after a very dangerous beast has defeated you to a world you know nothing about and you'll suffer there. Your suffering ends when the humans begin to love you for who you are, of which they will because no one can stop the will of Elédùmarè from happening, it can only be delayed. The fight will come in an unexpected time when you'll be unprepared and you'll be defeated that's the only choice Elédùmarè has given you and you must follow it. I will not come to you until it's time your suffering ends. Goodbye.

She disappeared.

They wept bitterly for allowing themselves to be tempted. The devil appeared again but this time, he made himself visible to the both of them and laughed at them. They clothed themselves and thought about their punishment until sleep over took them.
