I tightened my hold on the keychain, staring through the doors of where I thought Matt would be.
It’s been an hour since we were supposed to meet, but I don’t see him anywhere.
“Excuse me, have you seen Matt anywhere?” I asked a random girl who had been leaving his classroom, grabbing her arm gently.
She must be his classmate.
Matt was the alpha’s son and so the next in line to be the alpha. Everyone knew who he was.
Her head shook to the side and I dropped my hand, feeling disappointed that I still had no clue where my supposed mate was.
Thanking her for not flipping out after getting stopped by me, I turned on my heels, making my way to the cafeteria.
Matt was my mate and boyfriend for two years. Being the son of the alpha, everyone wanted to have him.
But he was mine.
Today was our second anniversary and I got a keychain to remind him of the first day we had met.
I had other things ready, but this was just a start.
“Hey! Tiana,” someone called out to me from brunt and I immediately turned around
I came face to face with Justin, who was Matt’s cousin and also like a best friend.
If anyone was going to know where Matt was, it was going to be him.
“Hey, Justin. Do you have any idea where Matt went? I can’t seem to find him,” I asked, staring at him as I waited for at least a positive response from him.
The worry in my voice was seeping in and I couldn’t help but think of the worst that could have happened.
“You have no idea where Matt is? Have you tried ringing him?” Justin asked like I didn’t leave his phone with thousands of missed calls and messages from me.
“Oh, thanks for the suggestion, Justin. Why didn’t I think of that?” I couldn’t help the snarky remark that escaped my lips, sarcasm dripping from them.
He was asking as if I would search for him if I had an idea of where he would be.
Justin’s face blanked at my retort and he rolled his eyes.
“I am not certain where he is, but you should check the library,” Justin said finally, pushing his thumb behind him in the direction of the library.
My brows furrowed in confusion.
The library?
Matt always complained about how much he hated books, what would he be doing in the library?
Not wanting to voice out my confusion, I thanked Justin and made my way to the library.
He didn’t even tell me he was going to be there, and it’s already been so long since we said we would meet.
Wasn’t he with his phone? Why couldn’t he answer my calls?
Different thoughts ran through my mind, and I struggled to get an answer for each of them.
“Maybe he was getting a surprise ready for me; it was our anniversary after all,” a voice in my head said, and I nodded slightly.
That could be the only explanation. I wonder what kind of surprise he had waiting for me.
My lips pulled into an ear-splitting grin as I got closer to the library.
The moment I walked into the library, I felt him first. The scent of my mate filled my nose, pulling me closer to him.
But it was not just him; there was another scent mixed with his.
One I knew too well and shouldn’t be there.
Maybe there’s a logical explanation for whatever was going on, it’s not too bad for her to ask him for help.
So I would understand.
I followed his scent deeper into the library, my heart pounding harder with every step I took.
Why am I nervous? It's not like Matt was doing anything wrong.
Maybe she was just helping him plan the surprise he did.
My mind raced with thoughts of what kind of surprise Matt could be planning for me.
It had to be something big if he had been ignoring my calls and texts all day.
And he even needed my sister's help.
But as I turned the corner, the smile on my face froze.
No…
My eyes landed on Matt, and my breath caught in my throat.
He wasn’t alone.
There, pressed against the shelves, was my younger sister, Sophie.
Her arms were wrapped around his neck, and their lips were locked together like they belonged to each other.
He was too invested in his passionate kiss to not feel my presence even though I was just a few meters away from where he stood.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
My body was frozen in place as I watched the two people I trusted most betray me in the worst way possible.
How could they?
My mouth opened and closed numerous times, words failing to form.
I could feel my heart beat wildly, but not in excitement this time.
My breath heated up, my eyes blurring as I burned the image before me into my mind
“Sophie?” My voice was barely above a whisper, but it was enough to make them pull apart.
Matt turned to face me; his eyes widened in shock for a second before they shifted into something unreadable.
He didn’t look guilty or even apologetic—just...calm.
He couldn't even bother to act like he had been caught doing something he shouldn't have been doing.
How could be?
“Tiana,” he said like he was greeting me on a normal day.
His eyes flickered to the keychain in my eyes and then back to my face.
Sophie didn’t even bother stepping away from him.
Instead, she clung tighter to his arm, a smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. “Oh, hi, Tiana. I didn’t see you there,”
How could they?
How could Matt do this to me and with no one other than my sister?
“You couldn't have seen me when you were locking lips with my mate,” I hissed with more venom than I thought I had in me.
None of them said anything, both staring at me with the same blank face.
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms.
“What the hell is going on here?” My voice rose, shaking with anger and disbelief.
At least apologize! Look sorry!
I wanted to scream at them but I kept it all to myself.
If they had apologized maybe I would have forgiven them and seen it as one small mistake.
But it was obvious this was anything but a mistake.
Matt sighed as if I was the one inconveniencing him. “It’s not what it looks like,”
Was I so stupid he thought he could easily lie to me and get away with it?
I scoffed, folding my arms across my chest.
“Not what it looks like? I just caught you kissing my sister! How else am I supposed to take this?”
Was I supposed to clap and hoot at them? How else was I supposed to see this?
But the look in their eyes told me they felt I was overreacting, and that made my blood boil.
Sophie tilted her head, still holding onto Matt.
“Why are you overreacting? It’s not like you didn’t know Matt and I have always been close,” She said like it was common knowledge and I should have expected my sister to be swapping saliva with my mate
“Close?” I snapped, glaring at her. “You’re supposed to be my sister, Sophie! How could you—”
Matt cut me off, stepping in front of Sophie protectively.
“Calm down, Tiana. This isn’t some big betrayal. It’s just the truth coming out,”
My heart broke at that one gesture, everything crashing down all around me.
It should be me behind him, he should be protecting me.
“The truth?” My voice cracked as I stared at him. “What truth?”
He looked me dead in the eyes, his calmness only fueling my rage.
“That Sophie is better for me. She’s always been the favorite—your parents love her more, and honestly, so do I.”
My chest tightened as his words sunk in.
It was no secret that my parents doted on my younger sister more, but hearing my so-called mate say such?
I didn't know what to feel.
“What are you talking about? You’re my mate, Matt. We’re supposed to be together!”
His expression hardened like I was speaking nonsense.
“We were never equals, Tiana. You’re weak. You can’t handle what it takes to stand beside me as an alpha’s mate. But Sophie...she can.”
What?
Sophie grinned, leaning her head against his shoulder like she’d already won.
She didn't look the least bit remorseful.
She had just stolen her sister's mate and she didn't care about that.
“You bastard,” I hissed, my voice trembling. “You think I’m weak because I trusted you? Because I believed in us?”
Matt shrugged like my pain meant nothing to him. “It doesn’t matter anymore. I, Matthew Jerkins. Reject you, Tiana. You’re not my mate. Sophie is the one I want by my side.”
I let out a cry, falling to my knees as tears flowed from my face uncontrollably.
I could feel the searing heat from our mate getting severed, and I couldn't handle it anymore.
What did I do to deserve this? I did all I could to make sure I would be befitting for Matt, and yet...
Sophie’s smug smile was the last thing I saw before I pushed up from the floor and ran, tears blurring my vision as I stumbled out of the library.
I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the keychain still clutched in my hand.It was supposed to be our anniversary gift. The thought that Matt had rejected me on the day of our anniversary sent another wave of pain through me. I could still feel my heart constricting painfully like someone had grabbed it and was squeezing it tightly. Breathing was hard for me, painfully hard. It felt as if my entire world had come crashing down, and I wasn't certain what I was going to do anymore. My fingers tightened around the keychain until the edges dug into my skin. I stared at my hand as it turned white, but I didn't squeeze. The pain helped me focus and kept me from completely falling apart. The keychain was like my life force. My eyes were swollen from crying, but the ache in my chest refused to go away. How could Matt do this to me? How could Sophie?I had trusted both of them and yet they threw this at my face, treating me like I was thrashing to them. I thought he was preparing
I stood silently as the maid adjusted the veil on my head, her fingers trembling slightly. The days had passed by in a blur, and finally, I was being thrown out. The white gown I wore felt heavy, not because of the fabric but because of what it represented. It wasn’t just a wedding dress, it was a chain binding me to a life I didn’t want.I had tried to run away previously but that didn't end the way I wanted. So now I had no choice. My mother stood behind me, her sharp eyes scanning my reflection in the mirror.“Stand straight,” she ordered, her voice devoid of any warmth. “At least try to look presentable.”I was getting married to a man known to kill, and that was all she was saying.I was being sent off to my death, but they wouldn't care.I straightened my posture, swallowing the lump in my throat. My hands fidgeted with the lace on my dress, and she slapped them away.“Stop that. You’ll ruin it,” she snapped, fixing the part I had touched. It's just a dress. I wanted to sa
The ride to Zayden’s pack was silent. He didn’t say a word, and I didn’t dare speak either. My hands rested in my lap, trembling slightly as I stared out of the car window. So this is how my life would be now? All the tales of the women he had killed flashed through my mind and I couldn't help but wonder how much longer it would be before he killed me. I turned to look at him, looking away when he turned to look at me. Zayden was attractive, with long black hair and red eyes. He had a strong physique hidden under all those clothing. But he could kill just as easily as he could seduce a woman. And I had to pay mind to that. When we arrived, the sheer size of the mansion overwhelmed me. “Are we staying in the pack house?” I turned to him, saying my first words since we got married. "My home is away from the rest of the pack. Don't expect to see anyone here,” Zayden replied and I turned back to the building. This place was far from home, but I just had to keep my mouth shut. Z
Tiana's POV.My heart pounded hard against my chest as I stared at my mate, his face being the exact reflection of my husband's. I still could not believe it. If not for the reassuring feeling within me I would have sweated it was a lie.Who was this man? Why does he look so much like my husband? And how does he know my name?"Tiana, are you listening to me? I said leave!" His voice was calm, sharp and controlling while Zayden's was hard, blunt and commanding. Why was I comparing them?"Who are you?" I asked in a hush voice. I wondered where I got the courage to ask him such questions. Why was I not scared? Was it because he was my mate? Did others also feel this feeling of security around their mates?"That doesn't matter for now," He replied then suddenly turned behind "Someone is coming,""What?" His words sent me my heart racing in fear and panic. I was told not to leave the room, had I known I would be caught I'd never have left.If Zayden finds out I disobey his order I will be
Tiana's POV."Open up the door this instant!" a voice from the other end of the room shouted. It was harsh and mixed with irritation and annoyance. "Who is it?" I managed to ask, my voice shaking as I spoke. "The king has ordered for you," the man roared impatiently, ignoring my question. Frightened and scared, I went over to the door and gently pulled it open. The man who had been behind the door glared at me. "Seize her," he ordered, and the men by his side roughly grabbed me by both arms. They pulled me haphazardly through the halls to the throne room. My heart pounded loudly across my chest, and my mind gave me a million and one reasons to believe I was in deep trouble. After walking for quite a long distance, we arrived at the throne room. Just like every other part of the castle I had seen, it was dark and cold, and the sight of Zayden made me flinch. Just one hard look from his emotionless eyes forced a lump down my throat. He was seated on a golden chair placed on a high
Tiana's POV I spent days locked up in the dungeon, but I wasn't sure of the exact number. It felt like forever, trapped in there with every minute ticking away slowly. My entire body ached painfully; it was as if I had been crushed by a hard rock. I was dehydrated, my throat as dry as a desert. I had lost my ability to see, and my eyes had adapted to the pitch darkness. After what seemed like an eternity of bondage, a ray of hope beamed within me as I heard the clinking sound of the metal chains outside the dungeon. My eyes stung as the beaming light penetrated through the opened door. "Get up, you are free to go" a cold voice ordered. With the little strength I had, I got up to my feet, but unfortunately, my legs were weak as noodles, and I wobbled before falling back on the ground. Upon seeing that I couldn't help myself, the guards picked me up and pulled me by the arms. When we got to my room, they opened up the door and threw me inside like some piece of trash. Patheticall
Tiana's POV.My eyes widened as I sat up from the soaked bed. The Beta, who was responsible for it, glared me down; "Why did you do that?" I questioned, using my hands to dry up my drenched gown. I had been so soaked that if a stranger had walked into the room, they would have thought I had fallen into a pool. "Oh, I'm sorry, princess, seems you haven't gotten the memo around here!" She scoffed. "Well, I guess I will break it down for you. It's past 6 already!" she roared, as if I was suppose to have known what happens by 6. "Am I suppose to do something?" I asked, totally confused by her anger and her statement. "Yes, b*tch, just like every other person here, you are expected to wake up early and do your chores!" She said with a mix of irritation on her face. Chores? What chores...she didn't really expected me to do household chores, did she? "Why are you standing over there like a stick?" She yelled, like an evil stepmother. "Come on, get to it already!" She was so mean and c
Chapter 9Tiana's POV.I blinked my eyes open to the light, sitting up on the bed, and patted my throbbing head. "Did I actually passed out?" I asked myself as memories of all that happened previously flashed before my eyes. "I can't believe you Tiana," I scolded myself. "Wait, where am I?" I blurted out as my eyes circled around the little room. 'Tiana,' a small voice whispered from my head. It had sounded quite familiar...almost like the one I had heard before falling unconscious. 'Tiana,' it called again. 'Who are you?' I questioned, not opening my mouth to utter a word. I was surprised by how easy it was for me to communicate back. 'I am a part of you, I am your other half, the part that you prayed every day to find. I am Nyx, your wolf.''' I have a wolf?' I had always thought I was wolfless. Every girl in my pack had received their wolf on their 18th birthday, but my case was quite different. I could still clearly remember the look of disappointment on my parents' faces as
Alphonso's POVFLASHBACK "Here you go, have this" I pulled out a small, still wolf action figure from my pocket."You'd really give me this?" Zayden's little eyes beamed sparklingly, as he looked at the toy in my hand, excitedly."Yes...That's until I'm done fixing your's," I replied with a small smile."Thank you," He appreciated, then grabbed the toy out of my hand and began playing with it. I picked up his black broken wolf toy, and tried to fix it together.I started by shoving the neck through the opened hole in the head. I was still in the regirous process of the task when my brother's voice came up again."Alphonso you don't hink father wouldw find us here right?" He asked in a soft voice. We were currently hiding an abadoned room's closet. "I hope not," I replied, sticking my tongue out, as I concentrated hard in fixing the toy."How did this get bad?" I questioned, a bit frustrated on how difficult the task turned out to be."I ruined it," Zayden said in a faded voice, whic
Alphonso's POV.I jerked upright at his words, scooping my phone up, which was laid upside down on my the bed.He really wasn't bluffing, I realized, as I saw Tiana sitted on his lap through the phone. she had a short sleeveless gown on , which exposed a huge portion of her smooth thighs. While Zayden was shirtless, revealing his broad golden chest. With a scorching gaze, I watched as Zayden's hands travelled through Tiana's body, caressing and massaging her softly. Pleased that he could provoke a reaction from me, he continued, planting gentle kisses that streamed from her ears down to her neck. As his hands ran through her body, Tiana closed her eyes shut, making it hard to tell if she was lost in pleasure or bearing the pains from his sharp kisses."What the hell are you doing with my mate?" I yelled angrily."Exactly what I had promised!" He replied aggressively."I swear I'll kill you if you touch her again!" I warned in a rusty voice. Not yielding to any of my warnings, he wen
Zayden's POV.We stood under a dark and starless night. The atmosphere was a bit tense, and the wind blew wildly, dragging my hair along with it. With about three thousand of my men stationed on various corner of the building, I and Serena matched into Alphonso's hideout. Unannounced, we barged in through the door, which to our surprise easily opened. An inky darkness, welcomed us in. Quickly, Serena turned on her phone's flashlight and not long after, one of the men found the switch to the lights and turned it on.The blinding light, brought the visualization of the empty room to our sight. Although I didn't get the chance to step inside the last time I came around, I never imagined it would be empty."Are you sure we are at the correct location?" Serena asked with a lot of questions on her face."Yes," I replied, irked by everything happening."Sir," one of the men called out as he descended down the stairs"We've checked around the building sir, the whole place is empty!"How coul
Chapter 19Serena's POV."Alright, I'm listening," I said, with the gun still rooted on his head. Killing him wouldn't be a problem for me, but I had to know the kind of information he had to share. His eyes dwelled on each of us, studying our faces before he spoke out "I'm not sure how this would sound your majesty," "Do you think the Alpha has time for jokes!" I yelled losing my patience with him."Speak up already Liam," Zayden said in a calm but threatening voice. He was fed up with all the delay and suspense, that he rested his palm on his head tiredly." Okay.." Liam swallowed down before he continued "I saw a man sir," "What man, how was he?" Zayden's dull eyes brightened up as he spoke up."He...He...." Beads of sweated formed on Liams head as he stared at Zayden completely freightened. "Enough of with the suspense and speak out already," I snapped impatiently."He had black hair and blue eyes... similar to yours sir," Liam said."How dare you compare our king to a criminal
Zayden's POV."Here are some of the other rooms that got damaged last night" A short staut soilder, gave me a tour around the packs barrack. The place was completely ruined with huge blocks and cements scattered all over. I had been in my office discussing with Serena, when the call came across from Simon, that there was an attack last night.Tied down by some other duties, Serana could not tag along with me. She however, promised to join me when she was done. The building, which was initially a multi-story building, with a mix of dormitories, offices and training facilities had been reduced to rubble, dust and debris. The place was entirely destroyed and most of the soilders were badly wounded. I was enraged by the fact that someone dared to trespass through my pack and harm my Elite soldiers."And before this happened, no one noticed anything?" I investigated, asking the soilder by my side. "No sir...You know the pack has not been attacked in years, and no one would have suspected
Zayden's POV.Tiana held onto her dress tightly, freighted that I might undress her at any moment. I was too angry to think of that. All I wanted at the moment was to get that mark off her neck. Tiana's bodys trembled in fear as she anxiously watched my every move."what are you doing?" I ignored her question, picked up the water host and sprayed it all over her body which caused her to gasp heavily."It's cold," she mumbled. Her hands shielding her body, as she shivered hard."Please, please stop, I'm cold," Her soft pleads feel on a deaf ear. I was too engaged in getting the mark of her neck to listen to any of her words. I knew getting it off her neck was impossible, unless Alphonso denounces her as his mate. However, watching the water run down her neck, brought me some sort of comfort.Feeling much more relieved, I turned off the host and left Tiana alone in the cold bathroom.*****************I was seated in my office, going through the various transactions that had occured la
Zayden's POV."You wouldn't be able to kill me even if you tried in your dreams," I replied in a spiteful voice."How about we test that now, huh?" Alphonso replied, pushing his chest forward. His men got the signal and their guns were directly on me. Several red dots from their gun, stained my head. Simon who had been by my side, pointed his gun at Alphonso's head "Two against over fifty men? Now how does that math work?Alphonso grinned enjoying the way things were going."I see you've formed an alignment with these criminals," I recognized most of his men as those that I had previously banished for their wrong acts, while the others were just lonely outcast."No brother, you've got that all wrong. What I did was to form alignment with skillful and powerful men. You failed to see that and chose to call them criminals, while I see them as men of great potentials," Alphonso corrected."Of course you do!" I scoffed "look I have no time to exchange idealogies with an outcast as you,""T
Tiana's POV.Shakenly, I picked the paper up from the ground and handled it over to Zayden. He snatched it out of my hand like an impatient little kid.I watched his face rumple into a frown as he read through the paper. When he was done, he roughly squeezed it into a ball and shoved it inside his pocket. His face hardened in anger, his eyes burned red and smoke steamed out his head. I was in so much trouble and only a miracle could save me at the point."How long has this been on?" His voice was low but threatening."I,I," Beads of sweat welled up my face."Just answer the damn question!" He shouted hitting his hand against the mirror on the wall causing it to shatter into pieces."Just three times... I've only met him three times," My voice wavered as I spoke with my entire body trembling in fear."You've slept with my brother three f*cking times now..huh?" He uttered jumping into conclusion."No I would never, I never did that," I replied immediately."But you planned to leave with
Tiana's POV.Quietly and calmly, I sat on the iron steel bed all alone in the room. Gwen had left minutes ago to go get us dinner after working hard all day long.Since I was all by myself, I had brought out the piece of paper which contained Alphonso's address in it. I stared silently at the white paper, thinking deeply.'why make things difficult for yourself any further? Just leave this place already. You know our mate would willingly take you in,' Nyx had been trying to convince me for the longest time possible.'i know he would , but I don't want a situation where I'd regret my actions. I wouldn't want things to get much complicated.' I explained to her.'It's difficult to understand you at times Tiana ,' Nyx voice faded into silence. I could detect great disappointment mixed with anger from the tone in which she spoke. She was only this insistent because of the mate bond. The mate bond had a way of compelling one to act based on their emotions rather than logic."Tiana!" Without
