**JESSICA'S HOME
Ann stood outside Jessica's apartment, tapping her foot impatiently. When the door finally swung open, she was met with a stoic Jessica, a stark contrast to the animated woman who usually greeted her.
"Hey, girl. Are you alright? " Ann asked with concern, filling her voice as she followed Jessica inside. “You look pale. Did a cabinet fall on you or do you require some manly touch?” Ann asks, teasing.
Jessica managed a weak smile, the humor failing to reach her eyes. "Something like that," she mumbled as they walked in.
“But seriously, are you fine?” concerned once again.
"Yeah, I am," Jessica replied, her voice flat. Maybe a little too flat. "Just feel hungry, that's all." Ann dropped her bag on the couch with a thud, the sound echoing in the silent apartment.
Ann wasn't buying it. Jessica might be able to fool an unsuspecting victim, but her best friend knew her far too well. "Uh-huh," she said skeptically, "and what kind of ravenous beast are you craving tonight?”
“Burnt toast or a quick sandwich?”
Jessica gave a smile. Ann always saw right through her. "Something tells me takeout isn't going to cut it this time," she admitted, slumping onto the sofa.
“Are you getting stressed at your new place?” Ann asks.
“No. Not that. In fact, I think I'd be getting to something more tangible soon.”
"Alright, spill it, what's up with you?" Ann presse further, plopping down beside her and grabbing a throw pillow to hug. "What happened at the Thorne Mansion — I mean, office today?"
Jessica couldn't help but crack a small smile as she launched into the story of Evelyn Thorne's visit, her sharp observations, and the unsettling feeling of suspicion that had settled in the room after her phone call with Ann.
“Nothing much. And yes — when you had called and asked if I found anything, his mother walked in on me…. I was stoned.”
“Oh– shit!” Ann yelled with her palms raised to her open mouth in amazement.
“I'm so sorry Jess — I didn't know.” Ann apologizes sincerely.
“It's fine really. She was going to have her eyes on me either way, Liam said so himself.”
“Oh goodness. I hope you pull this off. But is everything right with you and Liam at the office? Ann asked.
“Yes actuay. And then…….. Things got interesting..” Jessica said, her eyes squinting, forcing a smile from her.
Ann tugged her pillow more with her eyes bulged out, ready to listen, her face growing serious as Jessica recounted the events. Ann's expressions were priceless at every detail.
“No way! Fifty thousand?”
“Are you serious right now?”
“You know what this means, right?”
“We're rich, baby!” Ann asked and proclaimed in excitement.
“we?” Jessica asks, laughing at Ann's words.
“Yes, we are.” Ann replies but asks further “Are you not going to share with me?”
Jessica laughed even further.
“I'm saying the money is not ours. Have you forgotten that the agency has access to all these things?
I have to account for everything.
The agency decides what happens to the money and I'd find that out soon.” Jessica replied.
“When do you have to report?”
“Anytime now. I need to check the phone.”
Jessica hurriedly goes to her bed drawer for it.
“Shit!” She screamed from inside.
“What is it?” Ann yells back in return.
Jessica came out with a worried face.
“Speak up Jess, what is it?”
“The agency has called a dozen times.— I need to get on the call, please be really quiet Ann.”
The call starts and Mr Troy speaks up immediately.
"Detective Miller," Mr. Troy began, his voice clipped, "your account report seems… unusual. It indicates that a significant deposit was made into your account early hours of today."
Jessica took a deep breath. This was it. Show time. "Yes, Mr. Troy," she began, "that deposit…."
She explained how it all went and every office detail she had access to in Liam's office.
A collective eyebrow must have been raised from the board members as she spoke about how she got that money with no strings attached.
“That was it, sir. I believe it would have raised suspicion or a sense of distrust if I had rejected him, he seems to be keen and observant on such details and for the sake of the case, I obliged.”
“Well, that's thoughtful. But remember he's not buying you and you're not mixing your work for self benefits?”
“Yes sir! _ So, what do you suggest to be done with the money, some charity?” Jessica asks.
Just then Ann turned to look at her with a weary look and she mouthed quietly to her from where she was seated.
“I – AM – THE – CHARITY.”
Jessica was one breath close to laughing out but she simply held herself through the call.
“No. Not charity. The money cannot be touched because we have to give full evidence of any contact you had.” one of the board members speaks up.
“Is that understood?” Mr Troy asks to make sure Jessica is in line.
“Yes. Gotten!”
“Alright then, keep your eyes peeled. We need evidence and actual reports. More insights.”
“Work towards gaining his trust fully. You need that to find anything that could be amiss.”
“Understood sir.”
The agency might be right about getting close to him to gain his trust and all but what if she's not able to?
Are they thinking about the fact that his mother walked around with an eagle eye?
Even if she had to bring reports, she had to be careful.
Either ways, getting close to Liam was sure at any point.
Ann was going to stay over for the night, which meant a lot of merriment and laughter for both ladies. They enjoyed chatting and eating take-out food they had ordered before calling it a night.
For a few moments before Jessica finally shut her eyes, he thoughts drifted to the scenario where Liam had offered her a seat. He looked authoritative in a really sweet way that she couldn't quite find the words for.
Jessica tugged herself off the thought.
He was not to be thought of in a way other than a target and that was simply it.
“Good night Ann.” She whispered quietly to Ann but she was already fast asleep.
Leaning through the lavish office windows, sunlight created lengthy shadows that covered Liam's desk. Jessica sat rigidly upright on the edge of the visitor's chair opposite him. A tightness sprang through the air, unrelated to the pile of financial records she held before her.Liam, looking unusually stressed, was ruffling his hair, tampering with the normal flawless swoop. He said, "These quarterly reports are a nightmare," as he furtively skimmed the pages.Jessica, couldn't help but point out, “I think handling them in batches would really help."Liam winced. “Oh brother!”Then he added, “Don't mind me. My father used to handle all this stuff. Unfortunately, his… absence has left a bit of a void."Jessica couldn't deny a sliver of sympathy. Despite her initial suspicions about Liam, a glimpse of vulnerability softened his polished exterior. She focused on the reports, trying to ignore the way his blue eyes crinkled at the corners when he concentrated. Her gaze suddenly fixed on a
The update for the night was indeed worth something: a valid lead on Liam. Jessica wasn't sure why she thought to hold back on her findings from the agency for a while. Was it some kind of doubt she wanted to clear out? She later ended up delivering the pictures that had shown the discreet dealings.“You've done well, Jessica,” one of the board members had said.“We need more like this. Gain his trust as we mentioned before. He needs to open up about the family business to you,” another voice said.“... Well done, Jessica. Keep a low profile in all you try to do,” Mr. Troy finally added.Fulfilling! That was the feeling of the night. Mr. Troy and other board members were indeed impressed. But after the call, the thought of Liam crept into her mind again. He wasn't sure of what had happened in the office while he was gone, but he looked worried, or rather concerned for her.“Why does that feel like something?” she asked herself as she laid to rest for the night. And the sudden pang
The party buzzed with electric energy. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow on the elegantly dressed crowd, their laughter and chatter filling the lavish room. The strong smell of alcohol and sweet wine filled the air.Intense and intimate gathering. The men in their fine tucks and the ladies in their lovely flowing dresses. The TRIX must be very much delighted for a job well done.Jessica arrived at the venue, in her flowing black dress, nothing too complicated.Feeling out of place in the midst of all the personalities, she clutched on a glass of champagne, taking little sips from time to time as she wandered her eyes through the gathering. Some men spoke in foreign languages, others spoke in English, in hushed and loud tones, it was a ground for any.Spotting Liam across the room, she heaved, feeling a sense of comfort in his presence. She noticed carefully how he looked. He was always the hulk kind with the masterpiece of masculinity but tonight showed more than that. His masc
The night continued calmly, the music thrumming through the room like a steady heartbeat. Jessica felt increasingly restless, her eyes constantly scanning the crowd for Lucas. He'd disappeared after their brief encounter, leaving a void of discomfort from his sudden awakening. She stood close to one of the big curtains that hung down from one of the corners of the room. There were only a few people at that corner.Suddenly, a familiar figure materialized behind her, close enough for his cologne to send a jolt of unwelcome recognition through her."Enjoying the party, Jessica?" Lucas's voice was a low murmur, sending goosebumps prickling across her arms. She jilted a bit, not turning around, forcing a smile. "Just taking it all in," she replied, her voice strained. "It's quite a crowd."Lucas chuckled, a humorless sound that grated on her nerves. "Indeed. A lovely place to mix-up, don't you think?"His words, seemingly innocuous, sent a shiver down her spine. Did he recognize her? W
Jessica tried to follow the man's trail with her eyes but she couldn't. All that he had left her was a paper.Who could that be?Was she being spied on?Why discreetly too?Jessica unfolded the paper, her heart racing in her chest, it was too much occurrence in one night. It wasn't a note, but a crudely drawn map of the building, with a small red circle drawn over a spot, indicating a secluded balcony right before the gardens behind the building.Slightly apprehensive, Jessica cast a glance at Liam whom she was nearly six steps close to. He was still talking to his business partners when he caught her gaze, it felt questionable. Trying not to cause suspicion she finally walked up to him."Excuse me for a moment," she said to him, trying to steady her voice. "I uh… I need to use the restroom."Liam nodded, a shadow of concern crossing his face. He could see through her words,it didn't feel like a restroom break, he sensed there could be more. Offering him a reassuring smile like all
Liam stood in the dim light, right in her view, a relieved smile breaking out on his face. "There you are. I was starting to get worried."“Oh… yeah. Uhm… I got lost down the hall.” She lied“I walked down here and loved the view. Simply taking it in,” she added, turning to look at the view to confirm her lie.It was then she noticed. It was indeed a lovely view from the open area on the balcony. She might have lied about the reason she was there but it wasn't totally a lie, the view was pretty.Liam turned to have a glance at the view and he got captivated. The garden lights glittered like little diamonds and the moon was out like it lay on a waterbed. They stood there, taking the view in, in silence. Then, Jessica had taken deep breaths that were enough to rejuvenate her confidence beside him.Just what she needed; silence!“It's lovely.” He finally broke the quiet moment.“I never knew you loved the cool evenings.” He added.“Well… we never spoke about interests.” She said, a smil
Tomorrow was another day, another day to live a secret life at TRIX and navigate the web of her case and this old problem of hers, Lucas. The weight of it all grew heavier with each passing moment. The more time she spent with Liam, the more she yearned to be honest with him. But honesty came with a price, and the potential consequences were too high.Jessica got home and fell on her couch. Several toss and turns for hours while her mind replayed the clips of the night's event, the stolen glances with Liam, the unsettling encounter with Lucas.Sleep, when it finally came, was a restless symphony of anxieties. And that too, forgetting the daily updates she had to give to the agency.**THE NEXT DAY.She arrived early at TRIX. Expecting Liam in his office, a flurry of activity around him as always.Jessica took a deep breath and a smile emerged onto her face. As she approached his door, it swung open, revealing Lucas, his features plastered with a charming grin."Ah, Jessica! There you
“I simply can't do what you're asking of me!” Jessica blasted at Lucas. As said, Lucas had asked Jessica to meet him at 8:00 pm. At first, she meant not to see him but Lucas could be a pain in the ass. What did he have to say tonight?Getting there, there was no sight of him anywhere close, not until an hour later he rode in, demanding a swaddle from her.“Get in!” He said as he parked his car beside her, his glass whined down to the eyes view only.Hesitant, Jessica stood in a way that showed she wasn't willing to do that.“... I said get in!” He demanded with a more controlling voice that sounded like he was angry already.Still hesitant, Jessica finally walked to the passenger side of the car, opened up, and sat down. There was about a minute of silence as both of them stared at the empty park right in front of them. The cold evening wasn't hitting on either of them tonight and Lucas looked angry.“I need you to make him accept the deal!” Lucas started.“What?” Shocked at his word
