Jessica hurriedly gets down from the cab and runs straight into the company. Every worker on that floor looked fully settled in for the day but there she was, running the hallway, through the reception and straight into the elevator.
Panting heavily with her head bent down, hands on her knee and her handbag falling slightly off her shoulders, she cursed again under her breath.
“Screw you Olivia!”
The elevator clicked open at her floor and she ran out, noticing every see-through office was empty, but as she walked past the conference room, she found all the board staff there, organized and well seated.
At that moment, everyone turned to notice her and she just stood still in awe. Not what she was expecting and not knowing whether to join in or just walk away!
She definitely wasn't looking composed. Her hair looked all messy from the hurry of the morning and she wasn't her best physically, her face looked tired as well.
Liam, seated at the head of the conference table made a signal to her, inviting her in.
She slowly walked towards the door and on entrance, it felt like everyone's eyes pierced her even further.
Trying to avoid eye contact, she looks down and Liam speaks up.
“Here, have your seat!” He said, wide palms indicating the first left chair beside him, then he cuts the attention of the room off her.
Shyness enveloped Jessica. In front of over 40 people, her boss had kept a seat and that too, offering it to her.
“ — Where were we?” He asks and the room drifts to the actual reason for the meetup again.
“Company fixes and onboarding of new partners for business.” One of the attendees responded.
“What partners are we looking at?” He asks
“The Brandix and one other, says confidential to you only.” The same person replied.
“Miss Beth, do I have the confidential file on my table yet?” He asked, facing her.
“Yes you do. I dropped it this morning.” Beth assured.
“Then that would be all for the meeting. Have a productive day ahead!” He concludes and immediately stands up to leave the board room, then the others follow suit and start making their way out as well.
Jessica too made her way to the office. On getting there, the office phone rings, it was Liam.
“Morning sir.” Jessica greets.
“Morning Jessica. Please report to my office after you settle in.” He said and the call went off.
Could he be mad at her for coming late to the office?
Was it about their confined case or he just needed help.
She finished settling in and headed to Liam; a big journal and pen tucked in her arms like a baby, then she entered.
“You called for me.” Jessica said, walking towards his sitting desk, with its four visitors extended chairs opposite him.
“Yes. Have your seat.” He said and she quietly settled herself in one of the chairs.
“Peter holdings has withstanding taxes. How didn't I know this before now?” Liam exclaimed to himself. “Maybe that was why they needed this business deal, to get funds for their debts and survive a looming setback.” Looking at his desktop, staring in amazement of whatever he just found out.
“Do you think the flow of cash from this business deal would make up for their debts?” Liam asked Jessica for her input, pointing to his screen that stretched widely to her view.
Jessica carefully studied the screen before giving her suggestion. “I think it would help them get a great percentage off it and even help them get more contracts due to a leveled debt.” Jessica pitched.
“... Yes. That way, I get to work with them as a growing company and buy shares with them. Smart! Why didn’t I think of that?” Liam Affirmed to her.
“Exactly. It's a win-win situation for you.” Jessica said.
“Yes. That's correct.” He said looking at her, still glad for her input.
“— I called for some archived work. I recently found some files yet to be closed. I don't think there's much undone but I'd like you to through them.” He says pointing to another desktop top on his table.
“Okay sir.” She replied
“Call me Liam please.”
“Okay Liam.” She replied hesitantly and the room went radio silent for a while. Jessica started her search on the files. Discreetly checking it's tags for both Liam's request and her investigation purpose.
“I think I found something. You missed this.” Jessica said, trying to get Liam's attention.
“What's that?” Liam asked, drifting away from where he was seated and pulling closer to the corner where she was.
With both of their eyes on her screen, she spoke. “ There was a pending credit of a fifty thousand dollars on the 31st of last month, waiting patiently to be accepted.” Jessica said surprisingly.
“How was this missed?” She asked almost immediately, still surprised.
“Really? That Happened?” Liam asked, chuckling.
“Yes it did.” Jessica said, wondering what funny thing she said that made Liam chuckle.
He stared at her, not understanding why she was quite surprised. It was true the money laid there untouched but it wasn't like it cost him anything without it at all.
“You should have that. Take it.” He said.
“What?” she asked, eyes glaring at him.
“Yeah. Go ahead and have the recipient details linked to your account.”
“I mean, making yourself fifty thousand richer isn't such a bad idea.” Liam continued, maintaining eye contact with her.
Jessica looked extremely confused and for an instance on whether to accept or not.
Firstly, was he trying to buy her?
Was this some sort of test from him?
But what if she rejects it, would it spring suspicion and questions?
I mean, who wouldn't need fifty thousand dollars?
“C'mon Jessica, what's the thought process for? Call it a welcome gift!” Liam said to reassure her.
Of course he was filthy rich but this wasn't the kind of welcome gif
ts she was used to.
For a moment she thought of how the agency would suggest in a time like this.
**JESSICA'S HOMEAnn stood outside Jessica's apartment, tapping her foot impatiently. When the door finally swung open, she was met with a stoic Jessica, a stark contrast to the animated woman who usually greeted her."Hey, girl. Are you alright? " Ann asked with concern, filling her voice as she followed Jessica inside. “You look pale. Did a cabinet fall on you or do you require some manly touch?” Ann asks, teasing.Jessica managed a weak smile, the humor failing to reach her eyes. "Something like that," she mumbled as they walked in.“But seriously, are you fine?” concerned once again."Yeah, I am," Jessica replied, her voice flat. Maybe a little too flat. "Just feel hungry, that's all." Ann dropped her bag on the couch with a thud, the sound echoing in the silent apartment.Ann wasn't buying it. Jessica might be able to fool an unsuspecting victim, but her best friend knew her far too well. "Uh-huh," she said skeptically, "and what kind of ravenous beast are you craving tonight?”
Leaning through the lavish office windows, sunlight created lengthy shadows that covered Liam's desk. Jessica sat rigidly upright on the edge of the visitor's chair opposite him. A tightness sprang through the air, unrelated to the pile of financial records she held before her.Liam, looking unusually stressed, was ruffling his hair, tampering with the normal flawless swoop. He said, "These quarterly reports are a nightmare," as he furtively skimmed the pages.Jessica, couldn't help but point out, “I think handling them in batches would really help."Liam winced. “Oh brother!”Then he added, “Don't mind me. My father used to handle all this stuff. Unfortunately, his… absence has left a bit of a void."Jessica couldn't deny a sliver of sympathy. Despite her initial suspicions about Liam, a glimpse of vulnerability softened his polished exterior. She focused on the reports, trying to ignore the way his blue eyes crinkled at the corners when he concentrated. Her gaze suddenly fixed on a
The update for the night was indeed worth something: a valid lead on Liam. Jessica wasn't sure why she thought to hold back on her findings from the agency for a while. Was it some kind of doubt she wanted to clear out? She later ended up delivering the pictures that had shown the discreet dealings.“You've done well, Jessica,” one of the board members had said.“We need more like this. Gain his trust as we mentioned before. He needs to open up about the family business to you,” another voice said.“... Well done, Jessica. Keep a low profile in all you try to do,” Mr. Troy finally added.Fulfilling! That was the feeling of the night. Mr. Troy and other board members were indeed impressed. But after the call, the thought of Liam crept into her mind again. He wasn't sure of what had happened in the office while he was gone, but he looked worried, or rather concerned for her.“Why does that feel like something?” she asked herself as she laid to rest for the night. And the sudden pang
The party buzzed with electric energy. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow on the elegantly dressed crowd, their laughter and chatter filling the lavish room. The strong smell of alcohol and sweet wine filled the air.Intense and intimate gathering. The men in their fine tucks and the ladies in their lovely flowing dresses. The TRIX must be very much delighted for a job well done.Jessica arrived at the venue, in her flowing black dress, nothing too complicated.Feeling out of place in the midst of all the personalities, she clutched on a glass of champagne, taking little sips from time to time as she wandered her eyes through the gathering. Some men spoke in foreign languages, others spoke in English, in hushed and loud tones, it was a ground for any.Spotting Liam across the room, she heaved, feeling a sense of comfort in his presence. She noticed carefully how he looked. He was always the hulk kind with the masterpiece of masculinity but tonight showed more than that. His masc
The night continued calmly, the music thrumming through the room like a steady heartbeat. Jessica felt increasingly restless, her eyes constantly scanning the crowd for Lucas. He'd disappeared after their brief encounter, leaving a void of discomfort from his sudden awakening. She stood close to one of the big curtains that hung down from one of the corners of the room. There were only a few people at that corner.Suddenly, a familiar figure materialized behind her, close enough for his cologne to send a jolt of unwelcome recognition through her."Enjoying the party, Jessica?" Lucas's voice was a low murmur, sending goosebumps prickling across her arms. She jilted a bit, not turning around, forcing a smile. "Just taking it all in," she replied, her voice strained. "It's quite a crowd."Lucas chuckled, a humorless sound that grated on her nerves. "Indeed. A lovely place to mix-up, don't you think?"His words, seemingly innocuous, sent a shiver down her spine. Did he recognize her? W
Jessica tried to follow the man's trail with her eyes but she couldn't. All that he had left her was a paper.Who could that be?Was she being spied on?Why discreetly too?Jessica unfolded the paper, her heart racing in her chest, it was too much occurrence in one night. It wasn't a note, but a crudely drawn map of the building, with a small red circle drawn over a spot, indicating a secluded balcony right before the gardens behind the building.Slightly apprehensive, Jessica cast a glance at Liam whom she was nearly six steps close to. He was still talking to his business partners when he caught her gaze, it felt questionable. Trying not to cause suspicion she finally walked up to him."Excuse me for a moment," she said to him, trying to steady her voice. "I uh… I need to use the restroom."Liam nodded, a shadow of concern crossing his face. He could see through her words,it didn't feel like a restroom break, he sensed there could be more. Offering him a reassuring smile like all
Liam stood in the dim light, right in her view, a relieved smile breaking out on his face. "There you are. I was starting to get worried."“Oh… yeah. Uhm… I got lost down the hall.” She lied“I walked down here and loved the view. Simply taking it in,” she added, turning to look at the view to confirm her lie.It was then she noticed. It was indeed a lovely view from the open area on the balcony. She might have lied about the reason she was there but it wasn't totally a lie, the view was pretty.Liam turned to have a glance at the view and he got captivated. The garden lights glittered like little diamonds and the moon was out like it lay on a waterbed. They stood there, taking the view in, in silence. Then, Jessica had taken deep breaths that were enough to rejuvenate her confidence beside him.Just what she needed; silence!“It's lovely.” He finally broke the quiet moment.“I never knew you loved the cool evenings.” He added.“Well… we never spoke about interests.” She said, a smil
Tomorrow was another day, another day to live a secret life at TRIX and navigate the web of her case and this old problem of hers, Lucas. The weight of it all grew heavier with each passing moment. The more time she spent with Liam, the more she yearned to be honest with him. But honesty came with a price, and the potential consequences were too high.Jessica got home and fell on her couch. Several toss and turns for hours while her mind replayed the clips of the night's event, the stolen glances with Liam, the unsettling encounter with Lucas.Sleep, when it finally came, was a restless symphony of anxieties. And that too, forgetting the daily updates she had to give to the agency.**THE NEXT DAY.She arrived early at TRIX. Expecting Liam in his office, a flurry of activity around him as always.Jessica took a deep breath and a smile emerged onto her face. As she approached his door, it swung open, revealing Lucas, his features plastered with a charming grin."Ah, Jessica! There you
