The big dining room had been a social space during mealtimes. Though they had limited resources, James and Lily cooked large quantities of delicious meals.
There was enough food on the table to feed a small army, ranging from casseroles to stews. The family gave liberally of their meals, not just to Jude and me but also to needy neighbors.
Parts of the home-cooked meals were frequently given to neighbors, accompanied by friendly smiles and greetings.
