Aegis's P.O.V

Tears build in my eyes, and I take a shaky breath. This can’t be true. It can’t. They’re just friends. Sure, Sheila has a crush on him, but he doesn’t return her feelings. He can’t.

He’s my mate.
He’s mine, and I’m his.

Why would they go through with this, knowing they haven’t met their true mates yet? Why would Elias agree to this?

I lift my gaze from the box to Sheila’s expectant smile. My eyes trail from her face to Elias’s. He refuses to look at me. His jaw clenches so tightly he could crack his teeth as he stares off to the side.

Why?

He can’t really be going through with this. He can’t be doing this to me.

My wolf howls painfully within me, thrashing in my chest in rage and heartache as everything crumbles around us.

My parents, oblivious to the silent storm in the room, get up from their seats to see what my sister has gifted me. Once they read the words inscribed on the envelope, their faces light up. They smile at each other, joyfully hugging Sheila.

They bombard her with words I can’t register over the sound of my breaking heart. But fragments slip through—“Congratulations on being the next Luna”… “We’re so proud to have a daughter who’ll merge our name into the Alpha bloodline.”

I don’t even care for the position. The Luna title never once crossed my mind.
I just want him.
I just want my mate.

I can only focus on the one person in the room whose opinion matters.

I wish I could say he looks remorseful. I wish, for the sake of my pride, I could say he looks torn.

But I can’t.

And he doesn’t.

There’s no hint of regret or sorrow on his handsome face. He looks completely calm and content—as if he isn’t tearing me apart from the inside out.

He just… doesn’t care.

“I wanted to ask you face-to-face.” Sheila’s voice trembles with excitement as she fiddles nervously with her pink-manicured nails. “Will you be my maid of honor?”

The glow on her face makes my stomach churn. I’m going to throw up.

I try so hard to hold back the tears, but they finally break through. A wretched sob escapes my lips.

“I-I…” I stammer, unable to form words.

I have no idea what I’m going to say.
How do I tell her that the man she’s about to marry was in my room last night?
How do I tell her she’s planning to marry my mate?

An immediate frown darkens Sheila’s face at what she thinks is hesitation. Disappointment and confusion cloud her features. She probably expected me to leap at the news, showering her with hugs, kisses, and words of affection—the same way our parents are doing right now.

My wolf growls at the sight.

“Sheila, darling? Can you and your mother please get your sister some water? It seems the excitement and shock of the wedding stunned her.”

Sheila and my mother promptly shoot out of their seats and head for the kitchen.

I’m left staring at Elias and my father, who now wears a look of confusion tinged with suspicion.

“Elias, you can’t—” I begin, my voice cracking.

“Beta David, please come with me. I need to talk to you,” Elias interrupts smoothly.

Father looks between us, his brows furrowed. He nods solemnly and purses his lips, clearly confused but unwilling to ask questions. With a curt dip of his head, he turns to me one last time before following Elias.

On their way out, they meet Sheila and my mother returning from the kitchen. Elias gestures for them to follow. My father shoots me a sharp glare.

“What did you do, Aegis?”

His voice echoes in my head through the mind link.

I don’t answer. He thinks I’ve done something terrible to make Elias upset with me, but I can’t bring myself to look at him right now.

As if sensing my gaze, Elias glances in my direction and locks eyes with me. His hard, steely stare gives nothing away.

As his mate, I should feel his emotions the way he feels mine.

But he’s blocked me out.
He can feel me.
I can’t feel him.

Sheila tries to talk to him—probably asking what’s wrong. She follows his gaze back to me, her eyes narrowing. Not being able to stand how perfect they look together, I turn away and fix my eyes on the floor.

“We apologize for her in advance, Alpha,” my father says.

Alpha?

Why is Father calling him Alpha when Elias hasn’t yet been officially appointed?

His birthright hasn’t been passed down. There hasn’t even been an Alpha ceremony. Landon can’t take over the Alpha position without his Luna being marked, mated, and sworn into oath. It’s the condition set by the first Alpha of the pack.

The only reason my father would call him Alpha is if his wolf no longer recognizes Elias’s father as the current Alpha.

But Elias hasn’t found his mate—or at least not as far as my father knows.

There have been whispers in the pack about Elias’s missing mate, and whether the reason he hasn’t found her is because she’s human. His parents have worried too. His father—a hardened traditionalist—would never accept Elias as his successor without his true mate.

Seeing as Elias isn’t planning to accept me—his true mate—as his Luna, his father would never allow him to take over.

Unless…

If Elias claims Sheila as his mate, he can never be Alpha.

There’s only one way left.

To challenge his father for the position.

Alpha challenges are fights to the death.
The survivor claims the head of their opponent.

If my father calls him Alpha…

It can only mean one thing.

Elias is planning to kill his father for the position.

  • THE REVENGE OF THE DEAD LUNA   Chapter Sixty Three

Aegis's POVWe were met by some well-dressed people near the edge of the platform. Normal people. Two arms, two legs, same familiar faces. If I ignored the faint glow under their skin, I could have mistaken them for anyone back home. One of them bowed slightly to the king. “If you could please follow us, we’ll be leading you to your rooms.”“One room is fine,” the king ordered beside me. The heat that landed on my insides since I stepped foot here rose up again.I turned to him with my mouth open. The firm look on his face stopped me.I shut my mouth.Barely.The guide nodded and motioned for us to follow. We walked through a wide corridor made of dark stone. Blue flames ran crisscross through naked lines in the walls, steady and calm, like veins. The hallway opened into a city. A large, beautiful city. I slowed without meaning to. I had never seen anything like it.Glowing people walked the streets. Some laughed. Some argued. Some carried baskets. Children ran past us. Everything fel

Aegis's POV “My name is not Lyra.”The Fire God didn’t react right away. He stood where he was, tall and solid, on a red clay platform, fire rolling off him like it was part of his skin. The ground under him stayed red-hot, but it didn’t crack. Nothing around him dared to move unless he allowed it.“I’m sure you didn’t come here to argue names with me,” he said.“Of course not,” I bit back at the annoying immortal in front of me. “Because I didn’t come here to be renamed. And I hope you know you’re a shitty host. I didn’t exactly expect comfort, but one should be able to expect basic courtesy from the planet of the ‘Fire God.’” I finished with air quotes.I don’t know what it is, but everything in this place makes my skin crawl. Badly. The King shifted beside me. I felt it without looking. That small movement he did to reassure me that he was ready to jump in if needed. The God finally looked at me fully. Not through me. At me.“You step into my land,” he said, “uninvited, and you co

Aegis's POV Jaxon dropped it on the table like it had offended him personally. The heavy book’s sound echoed through the room. Dust lifted into the air. I held my breath.“This is it,” he said.Of course it was.I stared at the cover. Dark leather. No title. No markings. Just dust and ash.“This is from the Royal Library’s private collection,” Jaxon added. “I couldn’t find any other books that mention anything about the Fire God.”I slid my fingers closer, then stopped. My hand hovered over it.Maybe I should wait for the King to open it.I glanced sideways at him. He wasn’t smiling. Right now, his mouth was set, sharper than his eyes.“So,” I said, because silence was worse. “This book takes us where, exactly?”Jaxon looked at me for a long second before he shook his head and answered.“The Fire God’s territory.”My throat tightened.“Is it another planet?” I asked, pursing my lips.“No one knows.”I nodded. “Figures.”The King finally turned to me, a thoughtful look on his face. “Y

Aegis's POV I pulled my hand back and stared at it like it had insulted me.It lay in front of me on the granite countertop of the pack’s kitchen, quiet and innocent-looking. A dark metal chain with a small red stone in the center. No glow. No hum. Just there. Like it hadn’t nearly cooked my skin seconds ago.“Right,” I muttered. “Magic.” The quietness of Alpha Stephan’s pack echoed around me. Who in their right mind built their training grounds so far away from the pack house? Oh, that’s right. The wonderful, adulterous Alpha Stephan.I wrapped a cloth around my hand and picked it up again. This time, it stayed calm. No heat or reaction. That’s weird. Why can’t I touch it directly?I turned it over slowly, checking every link. How did such a small thing protect an Alpha from getting killed? Maybe it’s just lucky. But then again, I didn’t believe in lucky objects.I believed in patterns. And this necklace didn’t feel normal.I pulled out my phone and snapped a picture to Kara. Taking

Aegis's POVThe hall went quiet the moment I stepped inside.Every sound felt too loud anyway. The pack members’ boots on the stone floor of the trial hall. The scrape of chairs. The low breath in my chest that refused to slow down. The members parted to allow me to pass with sympathetic looks on their faces. I kept my shoulders straight as I walked to the front. The guards stood in the center of the hall with their hands bound. Their heads were lowered, but I could still see their faces. They were the same ones that led us to the cave.I stopped walking. The King stood beside Alpha Stephan. He was not sitting. His jaw was tight. His hands were locked behind his back like he was holding himself in place. He wanted them dead. That much was clear. The hall filled with the pack. No one talked. They watched the guards the way people watched a wound being cleaned. Curious. Uneasy and ready for it to be over. The King’s voice broke the silence.“Begin.”One of the elders stepped forward. He

Aegis's P.O.V“You're supposed to be on bed rest.”The ash clung to my fingers like guilt. It slipped under my nails and smudged black against pale skin, refusing to let me forget. There has to be something we're missing from the crime scene. A witch that powerful and experienced couldn’t have been that careless.I was kneeling in the wreckage, sifting through broken timber and cold stone, when his voice rolled over me like thunder.“You’re supposed to be resting, Aegis.”My chest tightened. The damn man had a knack for showing up like a haunting headache.I didn’t turn around. Just dug deeper into the soot.Maybe I’d find something—anything—that would make the gnawing in my chest stop. We’re missing something.“Bed rest is for people who enjoy feeling like they’re in a coffin,” I muttered. “I’m not one of them.”“That’s not what the doctor said.”“The doctor doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’m claustrophobic, not paralyzed.”“How would you know?”The words slipped out before I
