Ten years later she stood in the same pack, the very one that rejected and destroyed her and hatred boiled from the depth of my soul. She would make them pay.

Chapter One

Everyone was in danger. Even the humans at my party were no longer conscious! What the hell was going on?People were dropping like flies around me. My best friend, Robert, also a human, was in a dead faint on the ground, along with most of the guests attending my Quince. This was supposed to be my Quinceanera, A celebration of me becoming a woman.

“Wolfsbane!” My stepfather, Kyle, a powerwolf alpha werewolf, gasped out.

The pit of my stomach dropped. Wolfsbane was dangerous for werewolves. The drinks had been poisoned but I was not affected. I possessed special regenerative powers as a powerful witch, it might have prevented me from succumbing to whatever was inside the drinks.

But everyone else was in danger!

And then I saw him. He entered the hall like an angel of death, his dark brown eyes two dark pools of malevolence that shone with sinister intent.

A whopping 6’5" living embodiment of unfathomable darkness, the young man ran a hand carelessly through his hair before shooting a silver bullet straight into my Uncle Xavier’s leg. Uncle Xavier was Kyle’s older brother and he’d shifted in an attempt to attack this mystery man. I was sure this harbinger of death had something to do with the poison in everyone’s drinks.

“Keep moving pendejo,” his voice dripped with sinister intent. The heavy accent told me he was not from around here. What was a dangerous hitman from Spain doing in the city of Seattle? Why was he here? “—and you’ll get another one,” he threatened, gun still aimed at Uncle Xavier’s wolf that was crouching on the ground, poised to attack despite his bleeding leg. Uncle Xavier was not Kyle’s only brother. No. He had three other brothers, all powerful werewolves in their own right. But they were all incapacitated due to whatever was in the drinks!

The Spaniard stopped short, his ominous gaze going to me. “Ahh…” he looked at the glass in my hand which I had only taken a few sips of. “Seems like you have a tolerance for my witch’s potions.”

I stared him down, realizing this man looked to be not much older than I was. However, despite his seemingly 20 years of age, he definitely had more kills under his belt than years on his person. Even I could tell that much.

“Who are you?” I demanded, wondering if he was here to kidnap me for my abilities.

Tia Mel, a powerful werewolf-witch hybrid, mated to Kyle’s brother, had warned me that many bad people might target me if it anyone ever found out what I really was. However, nobody knew the truth about me. Not even my biological father. He was a human and only knew werewolves existed because of Kyle who was mated to my mother. We had decided to keep my true identity a secret. Everyone thought I was a human girl. The protective bangle I wore on my arm blocked my powers, for now.

Kyle was yelling at me to run. But I wouldn’t run. I had no idea how to use my powers, not yet anyway. Tia Mel cautioned me that if I tried to use my powers before I turned sixteen, it was dangerous because a human body couldn’t handle the vast amounts of power I possessed. But I wouldn’t let my loved ones be slaughtered around me. I had to try to help everyone!

My eyes went to my mother, a human who did not possess the same regenerative abilities as I. She was laying in a fetal position on the floor as she tried to fight off the poison. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she lost consciousness.

“Mama!” I yelled, trying to run to her.

However, I was viciously yanked into the hard body of the specter of death responsible for everything going on. My back pressed into his solid chest. One muscular arm went over my chest, pinning me to him. I tried to struggle against him but it was futile. And then I froze as fear lodged itself in my throat upon the sensation of cool dangerous metal at my temple. I bit back a whimper. He was going to kill me.

“The name is Gabriel Rossi,” he murmured against the shell of my ear, his deep voice sending ripples of fear down my spine. “And your papa is going to watch me kill his precious princesa. He took my birthright from me. I’m gonna take something from him too.”

“Rossi’s son!” Kyle choked out, recognition lighting up in his eyes.

I knew my mama headed a company that Kyle had previously acquired from someone named Rossi. I realized that this man was here to kill me in cold blood over some bid for revenge against Kyle. So I had the element of surprise. He had no idea what I really was–a girl born with the powers of one destined to lead the Salem Coven of Witches.

I wondered if I’d be successful in activating my powers. The last time I’d activated them, at the age of seven, I’d nearly died. But I was dead either way. Better to go down fighting, right? So I gathered my courage and with a surprising amount of strength fueled by the sheer terror pumping in my veins, I pulled myself out of Gabriel’s grasp.

He tried to grab my arm, only for his hand to go over the protective bangle that suppressed my magic. I gave another fierce jerk of my body and the bangle broke away, left behind in his hand as I pulled free of his hold. I heard the cocking of his pistol.

I turned to face him, realizing I was going to die. My body trembled with fear but I wouldn’t beg. I briefly wondered if it would be as painful as when my biological father dislocated my shoulder in a fit of rage when I was seven. He’d been sorry about it and apologized profusely. This man would never be sorry for killing me.

My eyes met the feral glowing yellow eyes of my killer, one hundred percent sure I was going to die. Sure that a bullet was very quickly going to lodge itself deep in my heart.

“Mate,” Gabriel Rossi said, staring straight at me, as I was left utterly flabbergasted.

The one word I had yearned to hear from someone…

The one thing I had always wanted…

Spoken from the lips of a man who definitely would sooner throw my body in the ocean for the sharks. I wanted a mate who would treasure me like Kyle treasured my mama. I wanted it more than I’d ever wanted anything else. And that dream was suddenly incinerated in the face of the fact that I was staring down the barrel of the gun, poised to kill me, held by my fated mate. A lone tear made its way down my cheek.

My bangle not only blocked my powers, it also blocked the mate bond. Only when it broke off my person did our bond click into place.

And it was then that I realized how utterly fucked up my life really was. I wasn’t fit to lead any coven. I wasn’t fit to be some all-powerful witch or even wield magic. My past was filled with traumatic memories of my childhood. I was pathetically pining for scraps of attention from an absent biological father, who I’d begged to be here today despite not having seen him for eight years, and now I had a mate who wanted to kill me! My own father did not want me, and now I had a murderer for a mate.

Before I could even begin to attempt to summon any bit of magic after such a huge shock, Gabriel was retreating, leaving the venue hall with quick purposeful strides. Without a second thought, I ran to my Uncle Xavier who was bleeding profusely. Tears streamed down my eyes and my hands were shaking as I knelt on the ground next to him,not caring that my beautiful gown of silver silk and gossamer net was now stained with blood. There was so much blood and my uncle was passed out. Was he going to die? What was I supposed to do?

“I will be back for you one day,” I heard his ominous words float towards me. But when I looked up, Gabriel was gone.

My eyes searched the hall for any signs of him. I then saw my biological father run into the venue hall with vials in his hands. He’d been noticeably absent for the toast, choosing to hang back in the waiting room.

“I found these,” Papa panted, quickly handing them to me. “I think they are the antidote.” He puffed his chest out proudly. “I risked my life to get these. Saw a woman sneaking out the kitchens and was able to grab these when she was distracted. Pretty sure she’s also the one who helped poison everyone,” he added.

I burst into tears, throwing myself into Papa’s arms. I was so scared! And I was so relieved Papa had arrived just in time.

“Mija, I’m here now, don’t worry,” Papa breathed into the crown of my head as he patted my back comfortingly. “I’m going to make sure nothing bad happens. Your old man still has some good left in him, despite what other people might think.”

I nodded as he pulled back and looked at me with a smile. I sniffled, realizing that my poor papa was just misunderstood. I recalled my first memories with him, when he would take me to the park as a toddler and we would play together. Maybe he was still the same person deep down, not the angry, bitter person he had become the older I got. Maybe he was trying to turn over a new leaf. And I hoped it stayed that way. Here he was, risking his life to help save everyone. He’d made mistakes in his life. But he regretted them.

“Evie, you have a new family, a new father with more money than your old man. Money and influence he used into bullying me into staying away from you, when all I wanted was to be part of your life. I’m all alone now, but I’ll always be here for you,” Papa muttered as we worked together.

I stilled, as those words hit me like a freight train, my emotions already all over the place due to previous events.

He really wasn’t the absent-father I’d thought him to be. He still loved me. He was still the man I remembered as a toddler. But what did that say about Kyle? Kyle who’d provided the funds for this lavish extravaganza where everyone was now teetering near death. Kyle who definitely had enough money to do what Papa said. But Kyle loved me. He would never do that! Would he…?

“Even if you love your new father more, I will always love you.”

Why did those words make it feel like I had to pick between loving my stepfather and loving my biological father? Couldn’t I love both of them equally?

I shook my head, realizing now was not the time to think about such things. I quickly did as Papa directed and began to help administer the antidote to everyone at the party.

However, as I administered the antidote to my little brother Rafel, born to my mother and Kyle a year after they’d gotten together and I was eight, I couldn’t help but think about the final words of Gabriel Rossi.

“I’ll be back for you one day.”

My fifteenth birthday party ended with everyone poisoned while I tried frantically to save their lives as those ominous words echoed in my head.

Present day

For years, I’ve been fleeing from two inescapable truths: my legacy as a formidable witch, destined to lead my coven, and the chilling memory of my mate, who held a gun to my head. And yet I couldn’t help but feel a dangerous allure to his malevolence—to his promise that one day, he’d come for me. It was like a magnetic force that gripped me relentlessly. It terrified me to my core. I knew deep down that if he ever caught me, I would be consumed by his intensity, like a moth drawn inexorably to a flame, only to be reduced to mere ashes scattered by the wind.

Which is why, at 22, I found myself engaged to my childhood best friend, Robert. We were to be married within the year. But deep down, I knew that Robert could never be the one to set my soul on fire or make my heart race with excitement. He was the steady flame that burned with predictability, but he could never compare to the wild inferno of love that I yearned for, a flame that could only be ignited by someone who held the key to my heart.

However, it was a fervent hope that through marrying Robert, Gabriel Rossi would become nothing but a bitter memory. My destined mate was everything that I knew I had to stay away from.

Unfortunately, on the day he showed up at the apartment that I shared with my fiance, I realized that you can run from Gabriel Rossi....but you can’t hide.

Chapter One
(Aegis's Point Of View).Never ever let your outgoing sister plan you a birthday party because chances were You would be alone. She would be nowhere to be found. You would be alone. There was nothing wrong with the party except for one giant fact-- it was a PARTY. The black speakers in the corner blasted a pop song I had never heard before leaving in it wake a reverberating thud. The stench of alcohol and musty scent horny teenagers was thickened the air . A tall lanky boy stood on a table , shirtless and attempting to do a remake of magic mike except this version by himself. It was horrible but his audience of drunk teenage fan girls didn’t seem to mind, their delightful shrieks going on and beyond to give me an headache. And Vela was still nowhere to be found. And here I was, the birthday girl, standing right in the middle of the chaos in my obviously borrowed pink dress, sporting a cup of chocolate and a tense smile. My mother stood across the hall beside the scattered food platte

CHAPTER TWO
(Aegis's Point Of View). One good thing came out from this night. Okay that was a lie, this night was a disaster. i had an headache and it was killing me.But it did get me out of the birthday dinner early so It is a good thing. I came to a giant revelation today. Vela had a very annoying voice.I knew her vice was uncomfortable to the ears but hearing her yap on and on with her french manicured hand holding my mate; I barely made it through the party without my wolf shifting and killing her. She just kept yapping on on about everything.. Changing my dress into a sweatpants and matching crop_top, I sighed in satisfaction. My phone pinged repeatedly but right now I could care less. It was probably some of my followers on Tiktok wishing me a happy birthday. I downed a couple of painkillers and padded to the bathroom in my yellow and black Winnie the pooh slippers to wash my face. No point taking a shower, I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight.Angel ran across the room c

Chapter Three
(Aegis's Point Of View).Three hours into dinner and I was already planning murder. I was planning the murder of my dearly beloved sister. But that was besides the point. He was ignoring me. After last night I assumed that we would be closer. If I didn’t know better I would have thought all that happened last night just a dream. The pain and roughness between my legs that accompanied every step I took as I walked assured me otherwise. We were having dinner with the Alpha's family. The unusual absence of the Alpha and Luna made the already horrible day take an even depressing turn. We’d been attending this dinner since we were children. The dinner was a customary tradition between the Alphas family and their Betas. As little children, whenever the dinner began to lose our interest we would always sneak outside to play. We were a formidable force, all three of us, Elias the prankster, I the tomboy and Vela the princess and baby of the group. We were a close knit group forced together by

CHAPTER FOUR
Tears built in my eyes and I took a shaky breath in. This can't be true. It couldn't be. They were just friends. Sure Shelia had a crush on him but he didn't return her feelings . He couldn't. He was my mate. He was mine and I was his. Why would they go through with knowing they had not yet met their mated. Why would Elias agree to this?I lifted my gaze from the box and to Shelia's expectant smile. I trailed my gaze from her face to Elias's ,he avoided looking back to me. His jaw clenched so tight, he could have cracked his teeth as he looked to the side. Why?He couldn't really be going through with this. He couldn't be doing this to me. My wolf howled painfully within me showing her rage and heartache at the way things were unfolding. My parents oblivious to what was going on, got up from their seats to look at what my sister had gifted me. Once they saw the words inscribed on the envelope, they smiled at each other and joyfully hugged my sister. They bombarded her with words I co

CHAPTER FIVE
(Aegis's Point Of View)."Aegis"My head whipped around instantly locking with green eyes. All the air me knocked out of me just at the sight of him, his built muscular body tense from emotions. I straightened up immediately. No matter how horrible or awkward I felt right now, it was better to be composed.“ We need to talk"I nodded my head. All sorts of thoughts ran through my mind. He took in a deep breath, released it before moving away from the door way to let my parents and Shelia into the room. I turned to Elias in question “What was going on here? Had he told her?.His focus was on my sister who slipped her hand into his, unable to meet my eyes. She bit her bottom lip staring at the floor.Mother and Father entered with grim expressions on their faces glaring at me in.... Contempt? Finally Elias looked up at me. Jaw twitching and muscles taut he tightened his hold on Velma. The tighter he held on to her, the tighter my lungs felt and the harder it was to breathe." This i

CHAPTER SIX
(Aegis's Point Of View).A loud powerful growl ripped across the room successfully cutting her off. A mug sitting on the table shattered. The dining table in he next room caved in and all of our attention turned to Elias. His lips were still tugged up and slightly apart to expose his large drooping canines. His wolf didn’t like the idea of me finding someone else. My wolf growled in disapproval of his hypocrisy. He didn't want me but he also doesn't want me to find someone else."It doesn't work like that Velma and you know that. The mate bond will always exist between us no matter how little"."It doesn't matter".Elias replied finally regaining control over his wolf. "We've come up with a solution".My eyebrows shot up. "Solution?" Elias looked over to Velma. She gives him a brief nod."My wolf he wants you as a mate. He won't settle for anyone else". He looked over at my parents grimly."But if we were to separate, the bond would weaken"I felt my jaw go slack. He couldn't be sug

Chapter Seven
(Aegis's Point Of View).Hollowness greeted me like an old friend opening my eyes up with a gasp. I was in an hospital room empty of patients but filled with people. Six nurses in varying height and coordinated uniform tended to the only patient in the room. The room in all its glory smelt like death. The walls appeared so white, it nearly blinded me. A single dull blue light hung in the corner of the room adding to the gloomy atmosphere of the room.“ Where am I?”A tall blonde willowy nurse in a blue apron exchange a look to a woman on my far right before answering me.“In the hospital ma’am.”“But this is not the hospital, I work in the hospital ” I replied looking around the room of new faces in confusion.“Where’s mama Priscilla and Sister Thalia?”.Exchanging another desperate look with other nurses in the room, the same woman answered me.“Erm, This is not your pack hospital ma’am. I’m afraid you’re no longer in your pack . This is the Night-wisp pack”“The Night-wisp pack. What

Chapter Eight
Aegis's Point Of View. The gloomy atmosphere of the hospital had become comforting. Elias mated Velma two month ago and I was paying for it. In blood. Miss Evangeline disagrees, she calls it the evidence of something greater. Something else I was slowly losing. My life.“She’s lost too much blood Miss Evangeline. If she continues like this, she’ll be dead by the next full moon” A nurse said.I’ve never seen this one around. Or maybe I have- my brain was beginning to lose its resillience.I felt another wave of blood coming through. It should be painful but I can’t feel anything. I’ve grown numb, unresponsive. I was finally broken.“ No, don’t say that. She’ll make it, I know she will”.Evangeline responded optimistic as always. No, she won’t. Look at her”.I chuckled in my mind at that. I was surely a sight to see. I was rushed back to the hospital a day after I got to the pack. That day was the first time he mated her. The matebond was taking the effect out on me because the rejectio

Chapter Nine
Aegis's P.o.vSix months later I was watering flowers.Sighing heavily, I took the green watering can by the handle and walked back to the shed. The heat of the afternoon sun burned hotly against my skin. The sweet smell of fresh roses and the unmistakable smell of the damp earth filled my nostrils at every breath I breathed in. Calmness enveloped me at the sight in front of me. Flourishing red and white roses peeking out masses of greenery blankets stretched out for miles. Goddess, it was beautiful.I ignored the sluggish sound of the soil beneath my oversized boot cladded feet and stopped in front of the little wooden hut I had frequented so much in the past month.Brandi Winston,a kind old man that allowed me to work for him in his fields, came out from the hut and flashed me a warm smile. Dressed in dark blue overalls folded at the sleeve, with a blue undershirt and brown boots, he was a sight to see. There were smudges of oil all over his arms, face and wrinkly chin. He must h

Chapter Ten
Aegis's Point Of View.It happened again. This was the tenth time this month that I passed out from pain and wake up with welts and sores on my body. And we’re still on the fifth day of the month. It’s becoming ridiculous how much they did it. At first it was only a couple times a month but now they were going at it like rabbits.Miss Evangeline explained that the consequences was this severe because my mate was one in high power. The only way to make them stop was to complete the rejection and that wasn’t happening anytime soon. She was very sympathetic of my situation. With sorrowful wise eyes she lamented on how selfish my mate was to not have waited for his mate and how much he was going to regret not waiting for his mate.If only she knew. For now, I needed to get out of here. I can't risk the pack finding out.Trying not to irritate the welts on my back, I tried to stand up gently. I mistakenly rested on one of the sores on my lower waist. The sores rubbed against the black line
