2025-04-09 12:17:42I dressed up in the same clothes that I had worn in my last life it was a deliberate choice— to keep things interesting, to maintain the idea of the naive Susan. Eight minutes later I was downstairs, standing next to Lily. One glance at the both of us, you could tell that we were opposites, we had very different personalities. I had casual clothes on but Lily loved to draw all the attention to herself.
“Awwwn sweetheart, you look so nice, shall we?” She said, wearing her usual cheerful smile “Yes we shall” I smiled back. We walked to her car together and few minutes later we were stepping into a winery. The same old spot— just as I remembered. “A winery?” I asked her with wide eyes for effect. “Lily, I’m pregnant, I shouldn’t be drinking alcohol” “Oh, Come on! we’d get you something non-alcoholic,” she pouted like a child begging for ice cream Inside, she led me to seat at one end of the room, we sat down and a waiter came and We placed our order. Selecting a dish from the wine and food pairing menu. “No alcohol please” Lily instructed the waiter. The food came earlier than we had expected, elegantly arranged in a way that showed off the restaurants style. I admired the way they had presented the food before digging in. Lily talked a lot and I played along, I made sure I kept up my act. No matter what, I had to hide the knowledge of my past. Then my phone rang. l reached into my bag, pretending to search for it, but from my corner eye, I watched. I saw Lily slip a pill into my drink. My heart started beating faster but I forced myself to remain composed. I finally found my phone, it was Jamie. Why is he calling me?. To act like he cares?, I picked up. “Hello” “Where are you” his voice was cold and distant. “Umm… I’m out. With…with Lily” I stammered for effect. “Okay. be safe” he said and what followed was a beep. The call ended. I continued eating but I didn’t drink. Lily’s eyes didn’t leave me. She kept staring at me, her eyes filled with an unsettling mix of desperation and expectation. she wanted me to drink. I needed a distraction , i needed to act and so I suddenly coughed, holding onto my chest like I was choking. “Oh my God!” Lily gasped, pretending to be concerned. She grabbed my drink and lifted it to my lips “Here drink up, it’ll help”, she thought she had found the perfect moment. I weakly pushed the cup away. “w…wa…water” I stammered, still coughing as I hit my chest. She dropped, her frustration flashed for a send before she turned to call the waiter. “Waiter! Hurry up!, we need water here, she’s choking” she called to the waiter The moment her back was turned, I switched our drinks. I didn’t stop coughing, the waiter delayed so I started sipping from her cup. She watched me drink, a satisfied smile formed on her lips. With each gulp, her relief became more evident. I dropped the cup and I exhaled loudly, “I’m okay now, thank you” Lily sighed in relief and picked up her cup to drink. The cup that was now laced with whatever poison she had intended for me. She took a generous sip, then another. I watched her carefully, making sure my expression was unreadable. We kept chatting and suddenly, she stiffened.She held her stomach. “I… I think I need to use the bathroom” she said as she stood up but she almost felt, her legs were weak—a familiar feeling. I rushed to her side, “Lily , are you okay?” I asked her with concern written all over my face. “I…I’m fine” she mumbled as she tried to carry herself , she took a step but her knees buckled. A sharp scream escaped her lips before she collapsed. “Somebody help!” I called, pretending to panic. An ambulance arrived minutes later. They loaded her onto a stretcher. I scribbled a number on a slip of paper and I gave it to one of the medical personnel. “if you need anything, call Jamie” I turned and walked away, leaving behind the chaos I had caused but just as I got to the sidewalk trying to stop a taxi, my phone buzzed. I checked my phone, it wasn’t from anyone i knew, it was an unknown number. A message. My breath caught as I read the message on my screen. “You should be more careful Susan. You’re not the only one who remembers the past.”
