RAVENHURST CLAN
Lylah gazed intently at the two figures standing in the centre of the pack as they exchanged their marriage vows. Akira and Zarek looked so happy and so much in love. Soon she would be required to say the vows as well and bond forever with Cormac, but the thought of that made her sad rather than happy.
“Why so glum, Lylah?” Kaida asked, rousing her from her thoughts.
Lylah turned to her friend, seated beside her on the low bench. Kaida’s eyes were twinkling under the full moon, and the colour of her flushed cheeks almost matched the redness of her hair.
“She’s imagining how her own wedding day will be.” Odessa chimed in from Lylah’s other side.
Lylah's voice turned pensive. "You tend to assume too much, Odessa. It would interest you to know that unlike you, I don't engage myself in petty imaginations all day."
Odessa didn't appear ruffled by Lylah's remarks, instead, she pressed on. “Well, whether you're actually imagining it or not, one thing is certain: your own wedding is coming up soon, and it'll definitely be more grand than this. After all, you’re marrying Cormac of all persons!”
"I can't wait!" Kaida exclaimed.
Lylah shot them a reproachful glance, then her thoughts drifted to Cormac. Her expression faltered.
“What makes Cormac so special?” She asked, her brows furrowing. “Is it simply because he’s Alpha Asher’s son - someone I barely know or love?”
"Love will grow in time." Odessa said matter-of-factly.
Lylah eyed her disapprovingly. "You watch too much movies. "
Odessa and Kaida laughed.
“But seriously,” Kaida began, “you must be a little excited about it?”
Lylah's tone remained resolute“As a matter of fact, I’m not.”
“Gosh, girl! You’re unbelievable! Many girls would give their right paws to be chosen as the new Luna, yet you’re acting like it’s a problem.”
Lylah didn’t reply. She looked away and fixed her gaze once more on the new couple in the center of the pack. The flaming bonfire behind the them cast a glow on her oval shaped face, and the tip of her nose flared outward as her velvet, ruby red lips curved into a gentle smile.
“Akira and Zarek have been close since we were all pups.” She began. “They chose each other. It seems not everyone gets to be that lucky.”
“So what you’re saying...” Kaida began, “Is that if you were given the chance to pick your mate, you’d have chosen someone else? Someone other than Cormac?”
“Of course I would!” Lylah replied, her facial muscles tightening.
“Who would you have chosen then?” Odessa asked, her voiced laced with obvious doubts.
Lylah looked squarely at her. Her face was undecided for a moment, but then she turned away without saying a word.
“You see...” Odessa continued, triumphantly. “You don’t actually have anyone in mind, you’re just being difficult.”
“I’m not being difficult...”
“Yes, you are.” Odessa countered.
Lylah's voice took on a hint of mischief. “Actually I do have someone in mind... but he's not from here.”
“Oh, that's very funny.” Odessa scoffed.
“No, I’m serious.” Lylah persisted, an enigmatic grin spreading across her face.
“Which clan is he from, then?” Odessa asked.
“I’m not telling you.” Lylah said, pursing her lips.
Odessa rolled her eyes. "And here I am, actually believing that you don't wallow in imaginations 'like me.'"
Before Lylah could retort, Kaida, who had been focusing on the event in front of them, nudged her and gestured forward, her hands twitching excitedly. “Look! This is my best part - they’re about to turn!”
The three girls focused once more on the couple as they received their marriage blessings from the three representatives of the Lunar Council. The atmosphere was electric, with everyone cheering as the pair prepared for their first duo transformation as bonded mates.
Just then, Lylah felt a tug on her right hand. She turned to see Cormac beckoning her.
“Come, Lylah, I want to talk to you,” he said, his deep voice cut through the cheering that enveloped them all around.
“Can it wait, please? I want to watch this.” Lylah replied impatiently.
“Now, Lylah!” Cormac commanded, the glow of the fire conveying his hardened gaze and the corners of his mouth which twisted downwards, as if daring Lylah to defy him.
“But I don’t want to miss this turning part...” She said softly, almost like a plea.
But Cormac had already turned and was walking away towards the Oakwood tree that stood swaying majestically in the wind some kilometers ahead.
Lylah stood up dejectedly and started towards him. Her friends eyed her approvingly as she left, but Lylah wished she was in their shoes instead. At least they would have the opportunity to choose who they are paired with, someone they actually loved, not someone that would just show up and order them around.
What could Cormac possibly want with her at this very moment? And is this how their relationship will be, he ordering her about irrespective of what she thinks or how she feels?
Lylah sighed and picked up her pace. The sooner she finds out what Cormac wants, the better, that way she can at least begin to learn about what her future with him would look like.
The cheers from the ceremony continued behind Lylah, fading into the distance as she strode angrily towards Cormac. His silhouette stood tall and authoritative under the giant tree, his hands in his pocket. Lylah hated that view. She didn’t ask for this. She didn’t ask to be promised as bride to the Alpha’s son, her heart was already with someone else, someone very far away, who probably thought of her every day, just as she did of him. But her parents had already made the arrangements, and she had no choice but to go along obediently with it.Cormac began speaking as soon as she reached him, without looking at her.“I’m going for a run tonight, I want you to join me.”“This night?” Lylah asked, bewildered.“You heard me.”She contemplated for a moment before speaking again.“But you know this night is reserved for the new moonbound mates. Other wolves aren’t supposed to be running on this designated night of the full moon vow.”“It won’t matter.” Cormac said, his long brown hair dang
The sun was almost high in the sky when Lylah got home. She went straight to her room and locked the door behind her, not bothering to wash off the mud stains on her arms and feet or speak to anyone. She took off her clothes and regarded herself in the mirror. The beauty that she was stared back at her. Her rich, black hair fell in curls around her shoulder, framing her face warmly. She picked out a few leaf particles from her hair and stared at them, memories of her run with Cormac flooding through her mind. The experience had defied her expectations; Cormac’s demeanour had been surprisingly gentle, stopping to let her catch her breath and inquiring about her well-being. His actions contradicted the cold, harsh attitude he’d displayed during the wedding.Lylah’s conviction grew – Cormac must have been deceiving her earlier. Before their parents arranged the match, four other suitors had openly declared their intentions. She knew many men desired her, so Cormac’s behaviour seemed susp
The atmosphere in the room was heavily tensed, with the weight of Lylah’s last words hanging like a challenge. Shay's unblinking stare and the horrified look on her face were all silent urges for Lylah to explain what she had just said. At last Lylah shrugged, and began."You know that eight years ago, my father, for whatever reasons he alone knew, gathered some members of the clan and led a revolt against the Alpha. I don't know all the details - my family rarely speaks of it - but I do know that my father failed, and even though reparations were made and he asked the Alpha's forgiveness, things have never been the same with them."Shay looked bewildered. "So what has that got to do with anything?" “It's simple." Lylah answered. "My father feels the need to find his way back into Alpha Asher’s trust - they were best friends before all these, you know - and he believes that marrying me off to Cormac would cement that trust.”The realization hit Shay like a thunderbolt. She looked up
LUNARVILLE CLANThe wail of women filled the air as Thane walked alongside his brother, Alpha Ryker, through the stretch of ravaged farms destroyed and burnt during the night by Villapaw, their long-standing rival clan. The once thriving fields now lay in charred ruins, a blackened expanse of devastation. The wheat, barley, potatoes and carrots had been reduced to ashes and stubble, stretched out like a vast, dark grave. The few trees that hadn’t completely burned down stood like skeletal sentinels, their trunks scorched, and their barks cracked and peeled. The early morning air lay heavy with smoke and singed earth.Thane and Ryker walked on, placing their feet delicately on the dusty soil, cracked and fissured from the intense heat, as if they feared that their weight would shatter the already fragile, heat-ravaged soil.Their faces were sullen and grim, yet composed, a facade they maintained in the presence of the distraught women following them, crying out and loudly exclaiming th
"During the last moon, when I was out on my last adventure, I met with someone." Thane was standing close to his brother, speaking in a hushed but respectful tone. He was striving to sound as sincere as he could, hoping to dispel any suspicions that might have begun brewing in his brother's mind. Alpha Ryker's eyed narrowed. "With whom did you meet?" Thane hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "Please understand, my Alpha, I won't be able to give out his name." Alpha Ryker’s gaze turned piercing. "In other words, a spy?""'Our' spy, my Alpha. I know that you don't approve of having spies in other clans, but the information we gather can be invaluable, especially in times like these." Alpha Ryker eyed him stolidly before speaking again. "And what did your 'spy' have to say?""He wasn't sure at the moment," Thane ventured, "but he believes there is a conspiracy that the Alpha of Villapaw is brewing with his Council. They want to expand, but they don't have the numbers or the res
The journey to the Lunar Sanctum – Priestess Aria’s abode – was marked by an uncomfortable silence. As they ventured into the Heartwood forest, Thane couldn’t help but notice the weight of concern etched on his brother’s face. The unexpected visit from the Priestess’s messenger had left them with more questions than answers. This was the first time in eight years that Priestess Aria had directly summoned the Alpha. In fact since his brother became Alpha, the High Priestess has never summoned him directly before. Her messages were always relayed through Zular, and if a summon was necessary, a member of the Lunar Council or Thane would represent the Alpha. But now there is a prophecy, which, to Thane, seemed to do more with a child being born than with providing a solution to their current crisis. Yet the Priestess’s messenger had insisted that it was related. Could that be why the Alpha himself was summoned? What secrets lay hidden within the prophecy that demanded the Alpha’s personal
Thane set about his task dutifully, with deliberate slowness, his movements precise and calculated. He began by plucking strands of hair from each member of the group and placing them in his right palm where they lay like a small, dark nest. Next, he dropped to his knees, his eyes closed as he breathed in the scent of the forest floor. He raised his hands to the sky, all the while muttering "The accessible way" over and over, to the astonishment of his bewildered audience. Then he started moving his hands, weaving an intricate pattern in the air, and then suddenly his hands stopped, his palms opened, and the hairs all flew to one direction, landing on one of the paths. "The first path to the right." He announced. "That's the one." The group breathed a collective sigh of relief, and Alpha Ryker nodded curtly. "Let's move," he said, his voice low and urgent. “We should rest for a few minutes” Thane whispered, his voice barely audible over the rustling of leaves beneath their feet,
Thane’s gaze lingered on the spot where Zular had vanished, leaving them in an awkward limbo. Given the tone of urgency in which Zular had conveyed the summons to them, he found it odd that the High Priestess would make them wait. However within this ethereal presence, obviously the High Priestess can do no wrong, and it would be well within her rights to take her time.Alpha Ryker sat beside him, rigid as a statue, his unease concrete. Thane sensed the same tension emanating from their companions. The young Lunar Council representative, fidgety and restless, paced the length of the antechamber, his footsteps echoing off the walls. “This is ridiculous,” he muttered under his breath. “We’re not here to sightsee.”Even the wardens, normally stoic and focused, looked bewildered, their eyes wide with wonder. Thane smiled wryly, remembering his own first visit to the Sanctum. The place had a way of mesmerizing even the most hardened individuals. As they waited, a soft snore broke the silen
The sight of Justine's figure in the open doorway made Lylah's heart sink, her alarm turning into terror as she realized that with this intrusion all her effort to convince Kael and make him see reason - which seemed to be working - might just be washed down the drain with Justine's sudden appearance. Justine took a few steps inside, his eyes scanning the room with an air of authority. Lylah stood up abruptly, a cold sweat breaking out on her forehead as Justine's gaze settled on her."What have you two been discussing?" Justine asked, his voice cold and detached.Lylah tried to brace herself, her voice firm despite the fear that threatened to overwhelm her. "What I discuss with my son is none of your business, Justine."Justine's smile was a thin, cruel line. "As long as you're in my house, it's very much my business.""Ha!" Lylah exclaimed, her eyes flashing with anger. "Your house?" She shrieked. "Like I asked to be locked up in this glorified prison! Why don't you call your guards
Lylah stood outside Kael's room, her hand hovering over the door handle as she gathered her thoughts. She still felt groggy and tired from the uneasy sleep she'd had the night before, however her conversation with Angela had sparked a determination within her. She took a deep breath, her resolve solidifying, and knocked on the door. The door swung open, and Kael stood before her in a bathrobe, wiping his damp hair with a towel. A warm smile spread across his face as he caught sight of her. "Mom." He beamed, "How are you? I stopped by your room last night to check on you, but there was no answer when I knocked."Lylah forced a smile. "Everything's fine, sweetheart. I was just out for a walk in the yard."Kael's eyes narrowed slightly, his gaze piercing as he searched her face. Despite her reassurance, the tension in her shoulders and the faint crease between her eyebrows betrayed her true emotions. "You look a bit troubled," he said, his voice gentle. "Do you want to come in and sit do
The sky above had darkened to a deep shade of indigo as Lylah spoke, and stars were beginning to twinkle like diamonds scattered across the canvas of the universe. The air had grown cooler, bringing back the scent of damp earth and the distant hint of rain. Angela stood facing Lylah, taking in the outlines of her face in the bright lights surrounding them, a lot of questions on her mind. She reached out and took Lylah's hand. It was soft and tender. Angela squeezed it gently, as though trying to convey her support and understanding without words."Well, what happened then? How did you manage?" She asked, keeping her voice as soft and encouraging as possible. "It wasn't easy at all," Lylah said, gazing down at her feet which was beginning to hurt. "Naturally my parents were summoned. It was a very uncomfortable scene. My mother was disappointed, yes, but wanted me to just say the truth so that she could find a way to help me. My father on the other hand, well, I think his anger was m
The pale sun was now dipping below the horizon, transforming the lawn into a warm, golden oasis. Sharp lights flickered to life all over the mansion, casting a gentle glow over the lush greenery and the delicate flowers waving up into the sky.Lylah stood watching them, her hands folded over her chest, and her eyes fixed on Angela's face as she pondered whether she could trust her. The fading light danced across Angela's features, illuminating her hazel eyes and bold smile. Lylah's heart swelled with a mix of emotions - fear, uncertainty, yet a deep longing for connection."My life has been a series of events that I never could have imagined," she began, blinking at the dahlias which were swaying lightly in the evening breeze. "You must know by now that I grew up among my kin, werewolves, that is?" She asked, turning to look intently at Angela, who nodded vigorously. "Well," she continued, averting her gaze once more, "I had only heard of other humans who weren't werewolves in storie
The heavy rain that had been falling for most of the day had stopped at late afternoon, leaving behind a faint scent of wet earth and a sky that was slowly clearing. A weak sun had appeared in the sky, casting a pale glow over the mansion's lawn, where droplets of water clung to the blades of grass like tiny diamonds. The automated gate swung open to receive Angela as she walked in, stepping gingerly on the gravel path. As she approached the lawn, she spotted Lylah standing at the far end, strands of her long hair being blown into her face by the soft breeze that followed the rain. Lylah was gazing out absent-mindedly at the flowers that bloomed in soft hues of pink and yellow. There was a distant expression on her face as she looked at the flowers, as though she wasn't seeing them at all. Angela's heart swelled with a mix of curiosity and empathy as she drew closer to her. Her thoughts had been reeling from the conversation she had with Kael, all the while contemplating what he sai
Kael's expression was guarded, his eyes narrowing slightly as he shifted uncomfortably on the bed. The way the visit was unfolding was definitely different from the picture he'd had in his mind all day. He felt like he'd rather not talk about his mother, but Angela's expectant stare and the resolute twist of her lips conveyed to him that he had no choice. He heaved a sigh, and started. "My mom has her issues. Thing is, she can be a bit paranoid sometimes, most of the time, really," he said, his voice low and hesitant.Angela's gaze remained steady, her eyes locked on his. "Paranoid?" she repeated, her voice neutral. "In what way?" Kael looked up at the white ceiling, squinting his eyes at the lights becoming more pronounced in the room now that the rays of the sun was dying away. "Has to do with her history, and the circumstances surrounding my birth, I think. She's always been a bit...overprotective, I guess. And Father...Justine, he's just trying to keep us safe."He looked down t
NEW YORK The large laboratory on the second floor had seen increased activity over the course of the months. It had actually been converted into a state-of-the-art research facility, its sleek workstations and cutting-edge equipment a testament to Justine's commitment to his mission. The soft glow of the overhead lights lit up the place, though it was nothing compared to the brightness of the morning light filtering unobscured through the large large glass windows. Serious-faced technicians in white lab coats moved around the expanse of the room, each focused on his task. At the far end of the room, behind a small table sat Justine, his gaze steady on the laptop in front of him. Beside him sat Kael, eyes glued on the screen as well, taking in all he was doing. Occasionally Justine would explain and point out some things, while Kael would nod, his face set in the most intense concentration. This intense focus, however, was ruffled when towards midday the door opened and a petite-lo
"Roughly eighteen years ago, my brother, Ryker, the Alpha of Lunarville, died." Thane began, his voice echoing through the great hall. "Surely many of you sent your condolences when this happened, and some even came to console me in person. But the fact remains that most of you have been running with the narrative that he died from a horrible accident while hunting." Thane chuckled slightly, a dry, mirthful sound. Then he stretched out his right hand and picked up one of the silver bullets sitting idly in the tray in front of him and held it up. The room was silent, the Alphas' eyes fixed on the bullet as if mesmerized."It was this bullet that killed my brother," he said, his voice low and measured, "Ryker met his death at this hands of this little object in my hand." The room erupted into a cacophony of shocked gasps, horrified whispers, and stunned silence.Alpha Asher's eyes widened in horror, his face pale. "How on earth did someone deep in the werewolf realm come to be shot wi
LUNARVILLE CLAN The warm rays of sunlight filtered through the large open windows of the great hall in Lunarville, illuminating the long table and chairs that had been arranged for the Alpha Convention. Thane, the host Alpha, sat at the head of the table, discussing in low tones with Alpha Billam who was sitting beside him, their voices barely audible as they waited for the other Alphas standing around in discussion and personal greetings to take their seats. Alpha Asher of Ravenhurst, much more advanced in age, walked slowly towards the table. His frail body was supported by Cormac, his son and Ravenhurst's next Alpha. His silver hair was thinning, and his eyes didn't appear as sharp as it used to be. He nodded briefly at Thane and Billam, who returned the gesture respectfully. Cormac didn't spare Thane as much as a glance; he just helped his father into a seat, then turned and left the hall. Next to sit was Alpha Walter of Waterville, who, immediately he sat, started asking Alpha
