- "Tell me about your first year of school," Ethan said suddenly.

- "What?"

- "You're freaking out, Angel. You need to think about something other than the present."

Blair took a long, deep breath before she began to speak. She didn't have much to say, and it took her a long time to think back to her first year of school before she could muster enough words. Her mind was too jumbled to go that far.

- "I... I had a sparkly pink notebook. My mom bought it for me, and I loved it. When I got to school, my teacher said the notebook was beautiful" was the first coherent memory in her mind.

- "Did you make any friends?"

Ethan kept his full attention on the highway ahead of him, and on the three pairs of headlights right behind his car. The night was not cooperating, but he had no time to think about the difficulties. The only thing he could do was speed up and calm the woman beside him.

- "I had a friend, but she was strange. She didn't like to talk."
