" You have nothing to worry about. You seem to forget I am a grown up man." Mike said and chuckled. " Alright. I will see you later. Love you." He was done with the call. Turning right, he headed straight into an alley. After about two minutes of his walk through the alley, a strange breeze blew across him. The air of fear swept through his lungs. The alley was deserted. His only companions were fear and the darkness of the night. " What's wrong with me?" He muttered, rubbing his palms together.
" Help." An almost inaudible voice spoke. " Help…me. " The weak voice called again. Then, his gaze traveled slowly through the night. His whole body went cold as he saw it. A dying man lay by the side. He hastened to him.
" Oh my God. What's wrong with you? " He squatted and lifted the man's head. " Blood. You are bleeding. What happened? Wait right here. I will call the ambulance. " He tried to stand but a hand gripped his cloth. It was the dying man. The breath of life was leaving totally. With the remaining strength he had left, the dying man used his other hand to draw a symbol in the air. " Stop… them…".
" What does … that mean? Stop who ?" Mike asked.
No reply came. The grip on his cloth loosened as the man slowly drained into unconsciousness. The light from an oncoming vehicle shone. Mike quickly took cover. The men alighted and without a word, heaved the lifeless body into their van. Then, they drove off. Mike walked out of the dark. His eyes had seen it. The same symbol that man drew was boldly printed as a design on their clothes. The weak voice of that man kept echoing his head ." Stop… them." With thoughts still spiraling through his head, he started walking. Whatever that man meant, it clearly spelt danger.
Inside a heliocentric room that had been plunged into near darkness by putting away almost every source of light , a large round table that had been specially constructed using the African blackwood, one of the densest and hardest wood in the world, was rightly positioned in the center of the room. A candle stand structured like the menorah was placed in the slight depression in the center of the table. Every seat round the table had been occupied by men dressed in black suits excluding one seat. All men rose to their feet as the sound of a footstep approached slowly. The oncoming man walked straight to the only seat that had not been occupied. Wrapped around his shoulders, was a large flag of the United States of America.
" We hunt those who have hunted us." The man said .
" We hunt those who have hunted us." The rest repeated after him.
" Let blood have blood and let the wages of sin be death." He said again.
" Let blood have blood and let the wages of sin be death. " The men repeated again.
" This day marks the era we have awaited. What shall we ensure?"
" To never go back."
He took the flag off his shoulder and slowly touched its tip on one of the lights on the candle stand. The fire caught on the flag started spreading slowly as it burnt the flag of the United States of America. Without a word, he walked out of the table and headed to a bowl where he dropped the flag and let it burn. Then, he returned to the table. With a wicked smile, he said " the mighty eagle shall fly no more for the reaper shall reap the eagle. " He smiled again. " The time has come. Let the game begin."
Positioned on a part of the wall, a small camera recorded the events of the moment.
Somewhere in the United States of America with the location 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC, the capital of the nation, the white house which was the President's residence and workplace elegantly mounted itself. The system of security was more active than it used to be. The recent happenings in the country was now a bigger cause for concern. Different security uniforms made moves in the vicinity. The military, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the police and other security personnels flooded the area.
Inside the auditorium, the president mounted the podium to deliver a heartwarming and reassuring speech watched by approximately three hundred and twenty-eight citizens scattered all over the Land. The atmosphere of panic and apprehension was high.
…." I am fully aware that no one in this country is ignorant of the troubles which have befallen us. Both the sane and the insane have knowledge of what I am saying. So, I will be as brief as possible. I am here to clear the air of confusion and rumor that has filled the nation…" he paused. Then continued. " Social media have been crawling with unending questions demanding positive answers on the issue at hand. I am here to tell you that whatever it is you have heard is right. The United States of America is at war. At war with an unseen foe . A deceitful and tactical one who wishes not to be found. For some time now, there have been too many cases of the sudden disappearance of some congressmen and women. In recent times, attacks have been made on my life and that of your vice president. At this point, saying we know who or what is behind these happenings will only make us liars . But this is only to make you aware of the truth you seek. No one ought to panic. This will be sorted out in no distant time. It's my fight. Whoever is behind this has me as the target. Out of the five hundred and thirty-five members in the Congress, a hundred and twenty-two have been confirmed missing. Their kidnap happened almost simultaneously. I announce this with great shame. But I have an assurance for you. This fight will be won! It's a promise I make to every citizen of this great nation at this moment. We will see to the end of this. In —" his next words sank in . He coughed . " We —" he tried to speak again but was cut short by the hit again. He held his chest.
" Sir!" A personal security called him.
" Are you alright?" Another said in a tiny whisper.
" I'm fine. I'm fine. " The president managed to speak. The hit came harder . He coughed hard this time.
" Sir!"
" Sir!!" The security team was already taking cover. The president staggered backwards and forwards. Then , he slumped to the floor.
" Sir! Take him out!" Orders started flying in the auditorium and the people present were already looking for refuge. It was obvious they were under another attack. This time, the president was the victim. And so, the long awaited speech came to an abrupt end without the signal.
Inside a poorly lighted chamber, some men dressed in fine black suits gave a mischievous smile as the speech ended. The White House was in chaos and could be seen clearly in national news.
" This is another big step into the future. " One said. He raised his wine cup . " To our victory. "
" To our victory!" Others chorused , raising their wine cups.
" Cheers!!"
Walking sluggishly down the West wing of the white house, Vice president Arnold Kroft knew his world was in motion. Everything spinned slowly initially. Now, they are gaining momentum. He felt as if he was on a planetary body spinning with great velocity that its centrifugal force was totally out balancing the centripetal force.
" What is happening to me?" He muttered as he struggled more to move. Possibly, could it be that what struck the president was already striking him? He thought. He was there when the president broke out in a coughing bout. For some reasons he could not explain, right in front of the whole citizens watching the speech present , online and through several television sets scattered in homes across the country, he started feeling really dizzy all of a sudden. This condition was one he could not afford to let anyone know of. It made no sense and the shame attached to it was a lot. So, he decided to keep it to himself. It was probably a result of too many restless nights of work. Now, it was getting back at him. Even his wife had warned him that it could deteriorate his health. The dizzy feeling came once in a while, before it started coming more frequently to the extent of wanting to disgrace him in public occasions. It was already happening again. His world kept spinning. It spinned so fast.
" Help me…" he tried to scream. But his strength failed him. He was losing it. It was no longer the feeling of being dizzy. It was more than that. He knew he was draining into unconsciousness and needed help.
" Help…" It failed again. It was already late. Everyone was too busy trying to escape for their own lives . the United States of America was suffering a great blow . He took his phone from his pocket . He needed to dial someone. But the numbers were too many . His brain formed multiple images. He slumped and fell on the floor. Almost immediately, a team of health workers arrived at the scene with their stretcher. They bundled him quickly and started moving out hastily from the building.
Inside the poorly lighted room , a phone rang.
" Hello . Tell me what I must know." The man picked.
" Mission one was successful. " The voice replied from the other side.
" I watched it. How about mission two?"
There was a little pause. " We just completed it. "
" Now, there is one more thing."
" Which is?"
" Leave the premises entirely."
" Already on that."
" We will speak again." The call ended. " Cheers again to another victory. " The men continued their merriment.
In the streets of Philadelphia, numerous citizens gathered at different points to watch the president's speech on national news . More citizens crept out of their homes to cuddle closer to each other. The fear in the atmosphere of the country had become very high." Everyday in this country has become a day to hear a new heart breaking story. " A man said, sorrowfully. " We are not even sure of our own lives anymore. "" Just look at what is on the national news. " A lady chipped in. " Why is everything this way? Even the president is about to die. If the president can't even be too sure of his own life, what will become of us?"" I'm so scared right now. " An old woman spoke. " It will be better to just die tonight than to live for more yea
The Chief of the United States secret service had frustration boldly written on his face. What could be wrong with the president? He wondered . He knew clearly that the worst thing that could happen to the nation was to lose their president at a time as critical as the one they were facing." Sir. " Secret service captain Clinton called as he walked up to him near the fountain where he stood. " We have checked everything."" Is there any flop?"" No. The security is tight in every corner "" That's a relief. "" But except for—"" What do you mean
Mike arrived at the scene of the explosion in a haste. The whole place had been sealed completely. Busy workers from different units were at the scene tending to different needs. He jumped off the bicycle he rode to the place . It was not his own. When the news of the explosion got into his ears, a reflex was stimulated in him. And he sought for the nearest means of transportation. A bicycle parked just beside him. He mounted it and rode off. Behind him, the voice of a younger male tried to signal him to stop. But it was a pointless act. He would not deny the fact that he heard it . It was not just the right time to play discipline. His loved one was in that part of Center City where the explosion had taken place. Not just a loved one. He had loved ones residing there. His mother , his friend Steve who turned into a brother and the lady he cherished were all residing there. Earlier that night, when the president's supposed speech was ann
The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations walked in and headed to one of the control Chambers. No greetings had come as usual. Everyone was just too busy with one thing or the other. And he was frequenting his to and fro walk in the building. The situation had become too tasking for any high ranking official in the security world. And as a matter of fact, the lower ranking ones have been feeling the endless heat of everything. The doors of the room slid open and he walked in effortlessly. " What is the situation now? Any good updates yet? " His eyes wheeled round a technology flooded room . Every computer displayed different locations in the country. " Everyone is still on it. " Agent Wills replied . " My God. " The director drew one of the swivel chai
The darkness of the sky was already moving away slowly as it was dawn. It was already the early hours of the morning. Mike sat on the partially dismantled heap where they found his mother some hours ago. His hands pressed hard on his knees. Steve stood in front of him , looking at the unending work before him . The bodies were still being taken away. A work that lasted through the night till the moment. He sighed and turned to Mike. Mike's face had no signs of smiles. His face was as mean as his heart felt at the moment." Mike. " Steve called. " Mike. " He did not respond. " Mike!" Mike raised his head to face Steve." Mike. Don't tell me you were not absent minded and yet ignored me. "" What is it , Steve? What do you want to say?"
The sky was already becoming filled with a brightness rising from the East. The sun was already coming up. The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations just stood with his arms locked and stared into the morning sky from the balcony. He had come out there to feel a different air. One different from the work laden breath everyone took in and out. But the peace he sought appeared to be beyond his reach. All his efforts to put away the thoughts proved abortive. The thoughts kept returning to him . And there was nothing he could do about it. He thought of the case with vice governor Wallace. What could really be happening in Philadelphia? The same man they had seen at the site of the explosion was said to have left the house when he called. That made no sense in any way. He sighed. Could he really be innocent? That was no way possible. The images of him that Kane showed them was great proof he was there. Vice governor Wallace has always attracted
" For how long is this nonsense going to continue?" Chief Chris said. " What nonsense is this?"" What will happen to a nation without a leader?" Chief Joe asked." I guess that is the point." Chief Chris said. " Who will take the responsibility of acting as the leader? In times of national crisis, the only beacon that stands to be of great help to the people is the president or his vice. But in this case, the president is in a critical condition and the vice president has gone missing. The congressmen and congresswomen have been missing for a very long time now. Almost on a daily basis. How do we go about all this? "" We should proceed very carefully. " Chief Joe said. " I guess this is part of the idea. Getting us to work under pressure. If we do it that way, we might lik
Mike sat down on one of the blue sofas and stared at the enlargement that hung on the wall of the living room. The enlargement was that of his mother. That picture of her was taken three months ago on her birthday. Mike went on to make it an enlargement and presented it to her. His phone rang. It was an official call. He owned one of the booming restaurants in Center City. Lucky enough for him, the restaurant was not affected by the explosion. He ignored the call. When the phone was done ringing, the picture he took with his mother came into view. He had used it as his screensaver. He smiled tearfully. Memories would not let him be. How on Earth was he going to get over the loss of his mother? The only parent he knew was that woman. His phone rang again. This time, it was Steve. He picked the call ." Steve. " He said as he placed the phone on his ear.
Mike sat next to Helen on the plane. Steve was in the same row but the next column. Helen had gone asleep and now leaned her head on the glass window of the plane." I am a little bit anxious, you know. " Mike said to Steve." Anxious?" Steve asked." Yes. I am just anxious. "" Why so?"" Do you not think it is normal to be anxious? I mean, considering the journey that we have embarked on, do you not think it is right that I feel anxious at some point? "" You have no reason to be anxious, Mike. "" Come to think of it, Steve. Could it be that my father has a connection to all of this?"
Captain Clinton stood several meters away and stared at the big black gate of a fenced compound. The directions he had received from Rick had led him directly to this point. Though, he had not seen the ambulance as proof . But he knew somewhere beyond the black gate and the fence, the ambulance would be parked . Four men stood before the gate. As one in the field, he could tell some of the loitering men in the area were keeping guard of the premises. Getting in would be very difficult. He was not even sure of what he was really going in there to see. All he had at the back of his mind was to get in." Rick. " He spoke through his communicating device. " Rick, can you hear me?"" Captain Clinton." Rick responded. " I am right hereWhat is the situation at the moment?"
Rick was becoming a little bit anxious over the whole thing. His breathing was becoming more intense. Whether it was because he was afraid of walking to a place he had not been before to see someone in secret or that the weight of the whole investigation was already pressing down on him , he could not really say. Never for once in his entire life has he been involved directly in an investigation. But this time, there was no other option other than to do it. If they were right all along, letting Chief Christopher Balor know anything about the current move would only be very detrimental and might end up being a waste of Captain Clinton's efforts." Hmm. " He exhaled. " There is nothing to fear, Rick. Yeah. Nothing to fear. We can do the same. You can do it. Remember, there is no other available option. If you do not help Captain Clinton, then, there might be no other person to do that. He confides in y
Helen stood alone with her phone. It was obvious that Ugoeze had been trying to reach her . But it was not working out. It was now clear to her that she was not going to return anytime soon like they had presumed before she left. For some reason, she still could not explain why she was doing what she was doing. The reason for heading to Paris was what she had not yet known. And trying to find out in the wrong way might end up jeopardizing her move. There was a lot of work that needed to be done. She dialed Kane's line first." Kane. " She spoke." Helen. Is that you?"" Yeah. It is me. " She giggled. " You are surprised."" I should be surprised, Helen. You nearly killed me. "" Nearly killed you. Huh. That is way
Ugoeze had gone out of her unit of operation at platinum hotels. Two things were on her mind. Her colleague who was a friend and the traitor named Paul Cole. She looked at her phone again as she walked towards the site of the explosion. There was feedback yet. What could be taking her so long to get back to her? She sighed." Agent Helen, where on Earth are you? Huh . And why are you not taking my calls? " She spoke to herself. The effect of the explosion was right before her. The entire space was sealed from civilian passage. She stopped and observed the whole area. There were agents from different security operating units on patrol. A plan was needed . Since she was on an undercover operation, revealing her identity carelessly may stand to be a risk on the journey. Her phone started vibrating . Taking a look, it was a call." Hello… who is
Agent Wills yawned hungrily as he continued his walk . Alabama was without any doubt a very nice place to be . The circumstances would not just allow him to have a good taste of what it meant to get there." You have arrived." Kane spoke. " Have you not?"" Yeah. I have. " Agent Wills replied and stopped before a wooden bungalow. ." You owe me a nice treat. Do not forget that. "" For what?"" Are you asking that? Without me man, you would have been lost."" Don't think too highly of yourself. I would have found my way. You only made it easier. Okay?"
Rick yanwed tiredly and stretched his hands and twisted his neck in both directions. Then, he took a bite of the burger Captain Clinton had left back there in the basketball court." What the—?" His eyes went to the event at the gate of the White House. "I thought this was about to be over." He muttered. " What is this again?" Before him in the computer, the chief of the United States Secret Service was marching on to stand before the protestants again. What was he thinking?".... Good morning once again to our good citizens. " Chief Christopher Balor began. "I believe that you must be surprised to see me here again. But you have no reason to be so surprised. You marched on from your respective homes to this gate to get information. And more information is what I have brought to you all. " The eyes of many that were gathe
" What were you saying earlier on the phone?" Captain Clinton asked. " You were the one that called me, right?"" Yes. " The operator replied. " Since you left, we could not gather up our strength. Uhm. Especially considering the bitter truth that one of us lost his life a few minutes ago. "" I apologize for that. I didn't mean it to happen that way. "" No. You have nothing to be sorry about. We all saw how it happened. It was not your fault. "" Are you trying to make me feel good or what? You should be unhappy that the person who used to work here with you has died."" As you can see it written on our faces, we are not happy about his death. But we are
A Chevrolet Impala drove slowly as it came to a stop some meters away from a warehouse that was still in the construction process. The door opened and chief Christopher Balor stepped down. He looked back and forth before closing the door. Then, he turned to the direction of the warehouse. No work was ongoing at the moment. In fact, the vicinity was deserted. Chief Chris looked around again to be sure no one was going to make any silly moves. Then, he began his glorious March, walking as fast as he could into the premises of the warehouse. The gate was open and it appeared there was life in there. He nodded. Walking into the premises, he saw just a single vehicle. It was the exact one Rick had called his attention to a few moments ago. He smiled. It was the day to catch one of the high ranking traitors of the United States of America. It was chief Joe Maxwell's car. He turned his attention to the entrance and continued his walk. This time, he applied c
