MARCELLA’S POV

I tossed endlessly in bed throughout the night, I couldn’t fall asleep. In the last few months a lot had happened in my life, I had major life decisions to make and I couldn’t think straight.

The clock on my bedside table showed it was a few minutes to seven, I stepped into the bathroom and took a quick shower. I then searched my closet and came out with a blue and white poker dot dress that reached just above my knee. I decided it was perfect for my mission today, then brushed my hair and gathered them in a pony tail leaving a thick strand in either sides of my face.

I slipped on some short heels and elevated my face a little with some mild makeup, looked at myself in the mirror for the last time and stepped out the door.

“Where are you going?” Alejandro asked when we met in the living room.

“None of your business” I said and kept walking.

“Would you tell me at-least?” Moms voice emerged from her room.

“Am not allowed to go out anymore?” I asked no one in particular.

MARCELLA’S POV “No, no, that cant be , I haven’t even had chance to see him yet” I said as the tears flowed. Micheals mother had grabbed my hands tightly. “That can’t be” she kept repeating. “I am so sorry ma’am” the doctor said and walked away. Mrs Cabello rushed into the room with me right at her heels. Goosebumps settled on my skin as I entered, the atmosphere was tense and the screen that faced me projected a thin straight line. Its cables connected to various parts of Micheals body, a nurse stood by disconnecting them one after the other. Mrs Cabello took Micheal’s right hand while I settled at his left side next to the nurse. His hands were still warm when I took them, his eyes were shut and he looked peaceful. I couldn’t bring myself to form any words as I watched his chest remain flat with no movement. “Micheal…” I called quietly, his moms gentle sobs filled the room and I couldn’t decide whether to comfort her now or spend this last moment with Micheal. MARCELLA’S POV I nervously inserted the key into the ignition, trying hard not consider the clear possibility that Zak could be behind Micheals death. The Mexicans had tortured him and when they realized he was still alive, Zak came to finish the job to send a signal to me?. ‘Why couldn’t they just leave him alone?’ I thought. Mrs Cabello had said he made a mild improvement in his vitals, he could have survived, he really could, but I showed up and now he is gone. Was my decision not to visit him a good one or not, as it stands now it was clear I led Zak right to Micheal. And now he is dead, its all my fault , why should Michael suffer for my actions or inactions. I couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt that had wrapped me and was lost in thoughts when a soft vibrating sound emerged from the car. I searched the car for the source of the vibration. Inside the glove compartment a small mobile device reflected its light, the screen showing , ‘30missed calls.’ It was Antonio’s

MARCELLA’S. POVI chose a tight fitting dress that ended just about three inches below my butt. It was a gold glittering dress and felt perfect for the night. My make up was quiet heavy with matching glitters on my eyeshadow. My hair dropped softly on my face with its bouncy curls making my head look a bit bigger than usual. If I was going to run the club, than I had to show up in grand style. I had stayed up all night finalizing my decision to work at the club or not. I spent the entire morning ransacking my closet in search of a dress that would fit my first appearance at the club as its new manager. I found none, hence I decided to order a dress!.I walked up to my dad at the study. “I need a card” I said once I barged in.“What for?” He asked without looking away from his laptop.“I need to buy a dress, I don’t have anything suitable in my closet” I replied.“Anything suitable for what exactly?” He asked still not taking his eyes off his computer, he seemed busy as he typed away

MARCELLA’S POVMy eyes remained focused on Lola. From behind the glass where I stood in the office, I could clearly see through her deceit. Her teeth appeared as she laughed at loudly at whatever my brother was telling her. I had seen her just once but I swear I could recognize here even in the dark. She brushed a hand over her bald head then rubbed her thighs as she laughed some more. ‘That’s not very ladylike’ I thought. I shut the blinds quickly on impulse when she turned her head towards my office as my brother pointed at it before remembering she couldn’t see me from out there.I felt like a coward for hiding behind the blinds to peep at this mysterious woman. I had suddenly become interested in knowing everything about her. Who she was, her past with Antonio, why she was really in town. I suddenly developed the strong urge to know all these. A loud tap on the door shifted me back into reality. A young lady stepped in, her head down as her eyes remained on the wooden floor.“E

He immediately started compressing his chest. “Shit!” I exclaimed. “Move!” Uncle Tee growled at me as he took over from my brother. People had gathered around us waiting anxiously for a miracle to occur, but the was none as the man lay still on the floor. “Fuccckk!” My brother exclaimed. “Just one night, you come here just one night and this happens” he said slapping his thighs in frustration. “Party is over, everybody out now, we apologize for the inconvenience” my uncle pleaded as the people started exiting the room. “Girls back to your hostels quickly” my brother yelled. Soon it was just us, two guards, and the dead man on the floor. I sat beside him quietly not sure what to do. “This is crazy, totally unbelievable. You could have just let this slide but no! You had to be your stubborn self here on your first day” my brother complained. “Its not my faul

ANTONIOS POV Two days had passed since Marcella drove off leaving me alone at the parking lot of the restaurant. I had called my burner phone over a hundred times hoping she would find it in the car and answer. I knew she was angry but I couldn’t tell why. I defended her before Lola, I ensured she wasn’t disrespected but she still found something to be upset about. Alvarez had kept an eye on her throughout and I even heard about the death at the club. Today I had asked Alvarez to refrain from following her. She had all the freedom in the world to do what she felt was in her own interest and I felt exhausted chasing her all over town. I had other equally important things to deal with and anytime I swore keeping focuse on my mission, she showed up and I push everything aside. This time I was determined to stay on track, the distractions had become too frequent. Marcella had become my weakness, I couldn’t resist the urge to keep my arms open to her even if I had a lot on my plate

I threw him a confused look. “To work at the club of-course” I replied hastily. “You don’t have to go in today, Alejandro will run things in your stead” he said bringing his wheelchair closer to me. “Is this about yesterday?, don’t worry about it, I can handle myself” I said fishing out the car keys from my purse. He shook his head simply before asking out of the blue. “And when do you plan on returning the car to the owner” “Its mine now” I said with a chuckle. “The presence of this car in the manor is a security threat. I have ignored for long but its time to take it back” “How do I go to work then?” “One of the guys will drive you in and out of work. Don’t return with this car” he concluded and wheeled his chair away. I arrived at the club at about 2PM, I decided to come in early to see how things were before the crowd trooped in. I just want to know what work you do here” the detective asked. “Procurement stuff” uncle Tee replied. “…and this?” She asked stepping into the room that used to be alive with the smell of money and drugs. The space was now taken up by a huge mahogany desk, book shelves, water dispenser and all those fancy office stuff. It even smelt exactly like my brother’s perfume. “Mine” my brother responded. “…let me guess, HR?” The detective said. “Yeah, HR stuff” my brother replied. “I see, what kind of stuff” she asked running a hand along the wall and examining it after every step she took. “I believe your warrant is only to search this place and not to interrogate staff” my uncle said. He seemed confident in his response, as though he knew what he was about. “We have answered

MARCELLA’S POV We had been sitting for a little over two hours, all eyes fixed on my father, who seemed unconcerned. Mother held unto his hand tightly with a pleading look, but father remained unbothered. He wasn’t going to drop his pride, he wasn’t going to let go of ego and confess to me. “El Russo, speak?” Salvador asked in a demanding way when it had become obvious father wasn’t going to talk. “Alright then, I will take my wife…” He added pulling me up by the arm. “…and leave” “I am not going anywhere with you Alphonse!” I protested, clinging tightly to my seat as Alphonse tried to pull me up. “You are only going to make things complicated for your family. You either come with me now or…” “Or what?…” I snapped back at Alphonse. “What would happen huh, tell me!” I yelled courageously even though every cell within my brain screamed fear. “I owe you nothing! Salvador did a complete walk around the table and stopped behind my mother’s chair. She looked terrified, her hand shakily came to her face as she wiped tears from her eyes. Salvador picked a picture or two from the table and looked at them carefully. “Sophia right?” He asked no one in particular. “Pfft, I never even got to meet her” he chuckled , putting the pictures down. “I woke up that day with a huge bandage on my abdomen, and I didn’t understand what was happening, I was too young! Too young to give consent for my body parts to be removed” he said in a tone that sounded almost like a scream. “When I was old enough to understand what had happened, I was very upset with my father, and no matter how he tried to convince me it was a good deal, I could never understand how a parent co

My hands trembled and my palms became sweaty, I took a step back as the man got closer. “Hello! Wifey” Salvador said with a broad annoying smile. I was absolutely dumbfounded, fear stricken and in shock. I couldn’t decide my next words and Salvador was already at the table directly in front of me. He stood tall like a god that commands worship, his intimidating eyes pierced straight through mine. The smirk on his face left me totally confused, Was he angry? Was he pretending to be happy to meet me? What were his plans? “Don’t be too shocked” he said bringing his hands to my mouth. “Close your mouth …” he added guiding me to press my lips together as I didn’t realize they were wide open in disbelief. ‘This can’t be real, I have been hallucinating a lot lately, theres no way this is real’ I thought, then went ahead to pinch my arm. MARCELLA’S POV Mother was still sobbing, Alejandro was rubbing her shoulders, in an attempt to comfort her. ‘Maybe that’s why he was their favorite child’. I thought, my fist clinched hard as I resisted every urge to rush to my mothers side. After a while she gathered composure, used a napkin to wipe her face and cleared her throat. I saw father brush a tiny drop of tear from the corner of his eyes, and I tried so hard to hide the shock on my face. In my twenty six years on earth, I had never seen El Russo sheared a tear and whatever this story was, my father seem to relate to it quite well as he wiped yet another tear from his eye. He tried to hide his little moment of weakness but it was too obvious, the great El Russo dropped not just a tear, but two. I drunk some water as mother cleared her throat again and begun to speak. “That little girls name was Sophia, our first child…” my eyes widened in shock, the water in my mouth spout out covering the plates before me. I had been in here for two days without food or water and I was getting weak. The harder I screamed and knocked on the door, the more energy I lost, and the more my fathers heart was hardened against me. “I am your daughter! Let me out of here” I pleaded with my last energy, I was drifting into unconsciousness when sharp rays of lights flooded the room from the corridor outside. The silhouette that formed at the door was that of a male. “Here, I’ve got you” he said lifting me up. “Antonio? You came for me?” I asked confused, for the the voice that came sounded exactly like Antonio’s. “Yes, I came, I am so sorry for leaving you alone” his voice soothing and comforting and even though he carried me on his strong arms, I still felt like I was laying on the rigid table in the room. My arm and neck hurt and I tried to adjust my self

Why would this happen at your Abuela’s burial ?” She questioned. “ I don’t know mother! Father had too many enemies I can’t tell which of them is trying to kill us” “ don’t you dare blame this on your father, he lived his life and is resting now, handle your issues Antonio!” “I am doing that, I literally just took over the mafia” “ its almost a year Antonio, this place is no longer safe for me…for us” “I Know…” I said giving her a look through the rearview mirror. “That is why I have decided to take you back with me to Italy” I added. “What? I cant just leave?” Mother said shifting forward in her seat. “Isn’t that too sudden Bravta?” Alvarez asked, his eyes fixed on the road. “There’

ANTONIOS POV Today was Thursday, my grandmothers funeral. The atmosphere around the house was gloomy, everyone was sad and grieving the loving and amiable person my Abuela was. She lived her life well and she would be missed dearly. I stepped out of the bathroom, allowing the water on my body to drip on the floor. The sun had begun rising , its rays peeping sharply through the sky’s blue garments. I threw on my attire for the day, a black suit with a matching black leather shoes. I drenched myself in some woody cologne and gave my self a final look before heading downstairs. The living room was well decorated with some of grandmother’s favorite flowers. Her casket lay on a table close to the dining area with seats arranged facing the casket. Mother had decided last minute to cut down the number of guests and to make it as quiet as possible. I approached the casket with firm steps, spent a few seconds absorbing grandma’s look for one very last time. She looked peaceful, a tiny sm

Gabriella had been very helpful, taking care of Alvarez’s wound. She and mother had built a strong bond these last few days and they chatted easily like long time friends. I was slightly grateful for that as it helped mother go quickly through the grieving process. Abuela’s body was at the morgue and we had started preparations towards the funeral tomorrow. Mother had great help from Gabriella with preparations and arrangements. I had sent out invitations to a few family and friends and we expected a huge turn out. Grandmother was loving and welcoming, everybody loved her. It was sad to watch her go, but deep down, I was glad she could finally get some rest. “Glad to see you back on your feet man” I said to Alvarez as he approached me at the living room. “All thanks to you and Gabriella” he said flinching

MARCELLA’S POV My voice echoed across the room as I kept screaming for mercy. The silence was deafening and the sound of my own voice bouncing off the walls scared me, I decided it was better I remained quiet. The dark room sent chills down my spine, there was a single window high up in the wall through which I could see the moon. It wasn’t bright, a half moon almost completely covered by dark clouds as it threatened to rain. I knew there was surely light in the room, I just didn’t know where the switch was. I shut my eyes tightly , inviting more darkness as I tried to focus on the space I now find my self. That didn’t help so I opened them almost immediately. My plan was to keep to the walls and do a complete circle all the way back to the door. I kept my palm pressed against the wall as I took one gentle step after the other, sobbing quietly as I went round , trying hard to avoid looking towards the center of the room. By the time I got back to the door, I was desperate, ru
