ANTONIO’S POV
I don’t know how long it had been, a couple of minutes maybe, but I knew she was anxiously waiting. I looked at Alvarez wondering what news he had that couldn’t wait.
I had asked Marcella to lay in bed, but just when I was about to go to her, my emergency phone vibrated in my pocket. After I had jumped into the river earlier to save her with the phone in my pocket, I was too upset and forgot to check on the phone, I didn’t expect it to still function. But when the device vibrated I knew I had to rush out.
“Bravta, take a look at this” Alvarez finally spoke showing me his phone screen.
“What is this” I asked snapping the phone from him. A picture of Marcella sat on the screen and under it the words Marked for $ninety million -Dead or Alive was boldly inscribed. My heart begun to race. I got up with a start, my fingers coiled tightly around the mobile device channeling all my anger to it. “Fuck” I exclaimed throwing the phone at the wall.
To be marked in the mafia dark world was a call of death. The whole mafia network is on the lookout for Marcella now. But she is mine, mine and I have vowed to protect her, even with my life. I didn’t even know this woman, yet,I feel responsible for her safety from the moment she jumped in-front of my car.
“Is everything alright” came Marcella’s voice. I turned to her, a rush of guilt run down my spine as I contemplated on whether to hide or share the news of her search warrant with her. It is her life and she should know people are out there ready to kill her for $ ninety million, but I also felt she was too and weak to manoeuvre this dangerous mafia war alone.
If anyone were to find her or harm her, they would have to go through me. “Nothing to worry about” I answered trying to keep a straight face while waving my hand to dismiss my men.
She had been through a lot and I did not want to scare her with the search warrant that had been placed on her head yet. “Alright” she said blankly, the look on her face showed she was unconvinced.
“Alvarez!” I called out to my right hand man. Alvarez is a trusted confidant and friend. He is a swift and very skillful sniper, and has been with me for over eight years, running secrete errands and conducting private investigations.
“Intensify the security around the parameter” I ordered as he approached. “Then find out everything you can about this Salvador guy and his mafia group” I added.
“Yes sir” he replied with a kind of salute he does that makes me giggle no matter how hard I try not to. “…and be discrete” I cautioned as he walked away.
Realizing the heavy burden that lay on my shoulders, I slid into the sofa nearby as confusion and worry coiled into my brain . My heart was racing at the thought of Marcella suddenly becoming my priority. I have to protect her, even if it means crushing down anyone and everything that crosses my path. Nothing can stop me.
MARCELLAS POV“Hello? Mom?” I called through the phone, I could hear the relief and joy in her voice as she responded.“Baby, where are you my love”“I can’t tell you mom, but I’m safe and…” “Are you out of your mind?” Antonio yelled yanking the phone from my hands.“What the hell!” I yelled back“I told you no fucking phone calls without my knowledge. Why the hell will you do that?”“I needed to call my mom, its being weeks and she’s probably crying herself to death”“I don’t give a fuck about that Marcella. Do you realize what you have just done?” He questioned, slamming the phone on the table just as Alberta walked in.“Forgive me sir I must have left the phone unattended.” Alberta apologized.“This not your fault Alberta, just stay out of it.” he assured her“…and it’s my fault?” I questioned “It’s my fault I can’t choose whom to marry? It’s my fault I have to hide even from my own parents? It’s my fucking fault my life is miserable now?” “Don’t be pathetic, you agreed to the t
ANTONIOS POVI squeezed Marcella’s cold hands tightly with my left hand while my right-hand kept pressure on her wound. The fast-oozingblood from the hollow space left by the bullet on her abdomen had already soaked two shirts. As she lay on the table in my dining area, I anxiously awaited the arrival of Doctor Firestone,a trusted underground medical practitioner Alvarez had secured for situations like this when we first arrived here in Italy.I felt useless as all I could do was say silent prayers hoping she pulls through this. Alvarez, Alejandro and some of my men had gone out to trace the shooter. I had promised to keep Marcellasafe but right here in my home I put her in harms way.Firestone arrived shortly after and went straight to assess the wound on Marcella. He looked more worried than I had expected. I refused to let go of her hands as the little threadypulse I felt was my only assurance she was still alive and she could make it. After the doctor stabilized her and treated t
MARCELLAS POVIt was a little pass midday when I arrived at the Russo Manor,my mother rushed down the stairs to hug me immediately she saw me, I simply waved a hand to dismiss her ensuring my other hand supported my wound. Its been just two days after the shooting and I had decided to pay my father a visit despite Antonio’s fruitless efforts to convince me otherwise.“You betrayed me” I said to my mother, “my abdomen feels like it had just been vacuumed you know why?”“Its not what you think baby” she sobbed“ Because you chose to betray me and put my life in danger.” She made another attempt to advance towards me and stretchedher hand to touch me.“Don’t you dare touch me” I said with a frown."I called you and you told dad my whereabouts, you were supposed to protect me!“ I added."Don’t be too hard on her” Alejandro said patting my shoulder as he joined us in the room. Uncle Tee followed closely behind wheeling dad into the space beside mom. I turned to walk away ignoring his pres
MARCELLA’S POV Its been a couple of hours and no one had come in to check on me or offer food, this only confirmed my suspicion, my father was punishing me. The door remained locked and so was my bedroom window, the sky outside was dark with only a few stars sprinkled across it. The lights of the manor lit up the compound giving me a view of a couple of armed men patrolling its parameter.. I entered the bathroom to wash my face and drunk some water from the tap, then an idea struck.A broad smile appeared on my face as I rushed to the closet, I pulled out every piece of cloth, bedspread and any material I could lay hands on. I tied them end to end forming a long row of clothes joined by a tight knot. This was my only hope of escape and I prayed silently that it works. I went back to the bathroom and tied one end of my improvised rope to the window frame, and with my bag hugging my body tightly, I let my self out the window. It was a one story building yet my fear of heights prevented
MARCELLA’S POV I heard a rattling sound at the front of my door, I didn’t bother to check it out as I knew the door was locked. Before long, Uncle Tee Stepped into my room holding a ball gown and some accessories. “You father demands your presence at the diner party.” He said to me “What party, I don’t know about any party” I informed him. “Well, what I can tell you is, you father just struck a huge business deal with Zak and the party is to celebrate the win, anything beyond that I am not in the position to say” “I am not interested in anything relating to dad’s business, I am not coming” I said simply. “Like you have a choice. You know El Russo does not make suggestions, this is an order.” I shrugged, I understood the consequences of declining my father’s invitation, but I felt unbothered anyways. “Wear this, and look your best” My uncle said laying the gown on the bed beside me and walking away. I ignored the piece of material, but the silver necklace accompanying
MARCELLAS POV Dinner was pretty much quiet, no one said anything peculiar. I had expected father to throw more light on this new business deal as the anticipation was killing me, however, I knew not to over step boundaries and ask too many questions. Zak kept busy in his phone only occasionally engaging me in one random conversation or the other. In this brief interaction, I had gathered he was an underground dealer, pretty new in the business but good at what he does. I didn’t grabs what exactly he deals in as he avoided the questions severally. I also learned from our conversation that, he had joined police academy but could not complete his training because he suffered some depression when both his parents died around that time. He however still had a few corrupt connections in the academy that gave him solid police intel relevant for his business. Occasionally when Zak was buried in his phone, Uncle Tee would stretch his neck to peek and when my eyes met his, he gave some
MARCELLAS POVWe stayed hidden behind the sofa, at this point it was just Uncle Tee and Alejandro against the dozen men firing their guns at us. I would have counted my self as part but I had no knowledge about firearms even though I was raised in a mafia house.Uncle Tee and Alejandro exchanged a nod in unison then got up simultaneously, firing their guns across the room.“Go, go, go,” Uncle Tee yelled over the loud gun sounds.“Be ready to jump” Alejandro said dragging me with him.“Huh” I replied just as we jumped off the building through the shattered glass window into the ocean down below. It took a while for my lungs to adjust to the new surface area, nonetheless , I pushed up to the surface of the water quite easily. I couldn’t see my brother anywhere at the surface neither could I remember seeing Uncle Tee jump behind us. My brother was a good swimmer like myself hence I expected him to show up on the water surface any moment. I scanned the water surface one more time and c
MARCELLA’S POVFive days had passed, and there was no sign of Uncle Tee, no word from the Mexican mafia either. The awful silence around the manor was painful and tiring, no one had visited the manor the entire week not even fathers down-liners.El Russo himself had spent most of his time sitting on the balcony upstairs staring into space. Occasionally I would see him deeply lost in thoughts, he was clearly grieving his brother but tried not to look weak before us.This morning, one of the guards had informed me that, father wanted me at the club tonight. I hadn’t stepped foot there in almost eight years but this wasn’t the time to get on father’s nerves.I was nervous as the club wasn’t a place that resonated with my soul. By the time evening came, I was already dressed and ready for the club and by eleven pm, father and I had arrived. The smell of smoke and hard liquor quickly filled my nostrils, I wiggled my nose briefly allowing it to adjust to the new smell. Several sweaty bodi
MARCELLA’S POV We had been sitting for a little over two hours, all eyes fixed on my father, who seemed unconcerned. Mother held unto his hand tightly with a pleading look, but father remained unbothered. He wasn’t going to drop his pride, he wasn’t going to let go of ego and confess to me. “El Russo, speak?” Salvador asked in a demanding way when it had become obvious father wasn’t going to talk. “Alright then, I will take my wife…” He added pulling me up by the arm. “…and leave” “I am not going anywhere with you Alphonse!” I protested, clinging tightly to my seat as Alphonse tried to pull me up. “You are only going to make things complicated for your family. You either come with me now or…” “Or what?…” I snapped back at Alphonse. “What would happen huh, tell me!” I yelled courageously even though every cell within my brain screamed fear. “I owe you nothing! What ever arrangements you have is between you and El Russo, leave me out of it” “You are only a part of the debts
MARCELLA’S POV We sat motionless as the Mexicans paraded my fathers manor. I had no idea what had happened to the security men outside, but for now, it was just us against these ruthless men. Salvador did a complete walk around the table and stopped behind my mother’s chair. She looked terrified, her hand shakily came to her face as she wiped tears from her eyes. Salvador picked a picture or two from the table and looked at them carefully. “Sophia right?” He asked no one in particular. “Pfft, I never even got to meet her” he chuckled , putting the pictures down. “I woke up that day with a huge bandage on my abdomen, and I didn’t understand what was happening, I was too young! Too young to give consent for my body parts to be removed” he said in a tone that sounded almost like a scream. “When I was old enough to understand what had happened, I was very upset with my father, and no matter how he tried to convince me it was a good deal, I could never understand how a parent co
MARCELLA’S POV I turned abruptly towards to door, my heart beating loudly in my chest. ‘No. Theres no way, that cant be…’ I thought. My hands trembled and my palms became sweaty, I took a step back as the man got closer. “Hello! Wifey” Salvador said with a broad annoying smile. I was absolutely dumbfounded, fear stricken and in shock. I couldn’t decide my next words and Salvador was already at the table directly in front of me. He stood tall like a god that commands worship, his intimidating eyes pierced straight through mine. The smirk on his face left me totally confused, Was he angry? Was he pretending to be happy to meet me? What were his plans? “Don’t be too shocked” he said bringing his hands to my mouth. “Close your mouth …” he added guiding me to press my lips together as I didn’t realize they were wide open in disbelief. ‘This can’t be real, I have been hallucinating a lot lately, theres no way this is real’ I thought, then went ahead to pinch my arm. I winced s
MARCELLA’S POV Mother was still sobbing, Alejandro was rubbing her shoulders, in an attempt to comfort her. ‘Maybe that’s why he was their favorite child’. I thought, my fist clinched hard as I resisted every urge to rush to my mothers side. After a while she gathered composure, used a napkin to wipe her face and cleared her throat. I saw father brush a tiny drop of tear from the corner of his eyes, and I tried so hard to hide the shock on my face. In my twenty six years on earth, I had never seen El Russo sheared a tear and whatever this story was, my father seem to relate to it quite well as he wiped yet another tear from his eye. He tried to hide his little moment of weakness but it was too obvious, the great El Russo dropped not just a tear, but two. I drunk some water as mother cleared her throat again and begun to speak. “That little girls name was Sophia, our first child…” my eyes widened in shock, the water in my mouth spout out covering the plates before me. My broth
MARCELLA’S POV “You cant keep me in here for ever, open the damn door!” I yelled, my fist banging loudly on the door, yet there was no response. I had been in here for two days without food or water and I was getting weak. The harder I screamed and knocked on the door, the more energy I lost, and the more my fathers heart was hardened against me. “I am your daughter! Let me out of here” I pleaded with my last energy, I was drifting into unconsciousness when sharp rays of lights flooded the room from the corridor outside. The silhouette that formed at the door was that of a male. “Here, I’ve got you” he said lifting me up. “Antonio? You came for me?” I asked confused, for the the voice that came sounded exactly like Antonio’s. “Yes, I came, I am so sorry for leaving you alone” his voice soothing and comforting and even though he carried me on his strong arms, I still felt like I was laying on the rigid table in the room. My arm and neck hurt and I tried to adjust my self
ANTONIO’S POV “Why is everyone trying to kill us since we arrived here?” Alvarez asked as we drove back home. “Who did you offend again Mijo?” Mother asked worriedly from the back seat she and Gabriella occupied. “I didn’t offend anybody mother” I said trying to be calm. “Then why? Why would this happen at your Abuela’s burial ?” She questioned. “ I don’t know mother! Father had too many enemies I can’t tell which of them is trying to kill us” “ don’t you dare blame this on your father, he lived his life and is resting now, handle your issues Antonio!” “I am doing that, I literally just took over the mafia” “ its almost a year Antonio, this place is no longer safe for me…for us” “I Know…” I said giving her a look through the rearview mirror. “That is why I have decided to take you back with me to Italy” I added. “What? I cant just leave?” Mother said shifting forward in her seat. “Isn’t that too sudden Bravta?” Alvarez asked, his eyes fixed on the road. “There’
ANTONIOS POV Today was Thursday, my grandmothers funeral. The atmosphere around the house was gloomy, everyone was sad and grieving the loving and amiable person my Abuela was. She lived her life well and she would be missed dearly. I stepped out of the bathroom, allowing the water on my body to drip on the floor. The sun had begun rising , its rays peeping sharply through the sky’s blue garments. I threw on my attire for the day, a black suit with a matching black leather shoes. I drenched myself in some woody cologne and gave my self a final look before heading downstairs. The living room was well decorated with some of grandmother’s favorite flowers. Her casket lay on a table close to the dining area with seats arranged facing the casket. Mother had decided last minute to cut down the number of guests and to make it as quiet as possible. I approached the casket with firm steps, spent a few seconds absorbing grandma’s look for one very last time. She looked peaceful, a tiny sm
ANTONIO’S POV Its been a few days and Alejandros wound had healed well, but for a little limp in his gait, one couldn’t tell he was just shot in the thigh a few days back. Gabriella had been very helpful, taking care of Alvarez’s wound. She and mother had built a strong bond these last few days and they chatted easily like long time friends. I was slightly grateful for that as it helped mother go quickly through the grieving process. Abuela’s body was at the morgue and we had started preparations towards the funeral tomorrow. Mother had great help from Gabriella with preparations and arrangements. I had sent out invitations to a few family and friends and we expected a huge turn out. Grandmother was loving and welcoming, everybody loved her. It was sad to watch her go, but deep down, I was glad she could finally get some rest. “Glad to see you back on your feet man” I said to Alvarez as he approached me at the living room. “All thanks to you and Gabriella” he said flinching
MARCELLA’S POV My voice echoed across the room as I kept screaming for mercy. The silence was deafening and the sound of my own voice bouncing off the walls scared me, I decided it was better I remained quiet. The dark room sent chills down my spine, there was a single window high up in the wall through which I could see the moon. It wasn’t bright, a half moon almost completely covered by dark clouds as it threatened to rain. I knew there was surely light in the room, I just didn’t know where the switch was. I shut my eyes tightly , inviting more darkness as I tried to focus on the space I now find my self. That didn’t help so I opened them almost immediately. My plan was to keep to the walls and do a complete circle all the way back to the door. I kept my palm pressed against the wall as I took one gentle step after the other, sobbing quietly as I went round , trying hard to avoid looking towards the center of the room. By the time I got back to the door, I was desperate, ru
