Chapter 1: Darius & Amoy
-
Darius stirred the cake batter swiftly as the maids rushed around the kitchen preparing dinner for the family gathering that was being held tonight. "Sir, you should be getting ready for tonight we can handle this." He shook his head pouring the batter into a cake pan.
"It's fine Linda and call me Darius, I think we've passed the formalities." She sent him a worried smile.
"Well, Darius I'll handle this, go feed the horses in the stable, I'm sure Lily misses you but set the dining room table before you go outside." He departed to the dining hall, getting the bucket and rag from the corner of the room, cleaning the table where his wife's family would be eating.
Soon he used the mop, cleaning the floor, once he was finished he went to the stables where he saw his favourite black horse.
Darius brushed the horse tenderly, as he fed her an apple. "You're getting so big now." The horse neighed in response making a smile appear on his face but it soon disappeared as he heard his wife's voice.
"Darius!" She shouted approaching him with a scowl, "What are you doing out here?!" He raised his eyebrow gesturing towards the horse as it was very obvious as to what he was doing.
"Feeding Lily."
"Grandmother would kill you, kill me if she found out you were out in her stables touching her horses come now, the rest of my family should be arriving shortly, we need to get you out of these clothes." He sighs following behind her as they walked towards the mansion.
He took off his shoes, she did the same entering the house through the back not wanting to be seen as they went into the room they were staying in. "Change, quickly we can't be the last to arrive, again." She ordered, he did as told not wishing to upset her anymore.
Darius changed into the suit he had rented, his 4C hair was cut low, he washed his hand getting the dirt off them, he looked into the bathroom mirror, he was still confused as to how he got here.
It felt like just yesterday he was a child on his parent's farm playing with the animals, now he was married to a woman who didn't care for him, only her image, he wondered why his parents forced him to marry her, was it for money? Or-
"Darius! Hurry." He sighs moving out of the room seeing, Amoy leaving, he quickly followed her as they went downstairs entering the living room where her family sat engaging in different discussions, their eyes went to the couple, judging them—judging Darius as they took in his rented suit and old shoes.
"Amoy late as always, you're lucky grandmother is still in her room." Her sister, Trinity scolded, completely ignoring Darius.
"You look beautiful tonight Trinity." He complimented, the woman continued ignoring him as she turned back to her conversation.
"Darius, don't talk or look at them," Amoy whispered to him, he silently complied.
"Is your father coming?" He asked her quietly.
"I said don't talk."
"To them." She glared at him making him sigh. "Fine, I'll keep quiet."
Darius would be lying if he said playing the perfect husband wasn't tiring, but he played along either way knowing that Amoy was just stressed, she was despised by her family because her father was the least favoured child amongst his siblings.
Her sister Trinity was an exception as she was her grandfather's favourite before he passed.
Amoy always tried to be the best at everything, she always tried to be perfect, even though her efforts were always deemed useless, she continued to work hard.
A familiar man, Darius knew as William, approached them. "Dad, why are you here?" He shrugs, hugging his daughter and sent Darius a quick smile. Amoy looked exactly like her father, they both had coffee brown eyes, her skin was copper coloured while his was golden black. They both had 4B hair, he would keep it in a low cut while Amoy had her hair in a cornrow.
"Believe me when I say, I would rather be anywhere but here, how are you both?" Her eyes met Darius briefly, it was rare for her to look at him, at least in the eye.
"We're fine, but why would grandmother invite you?" His daughter questions.
"That, I don't know, I wish I didn't come, I forgot how judgemental my family could be." They all silently agreed as they watched his siblings and their children give him disgusted looks.
Darius always wondered what he did to make them hate him this much, he was always taught that family was everything, that family was power, but this family was like a bunch of high schoolers, always gossiping about one other, they didn't even trust each other, but how could you trust someone who fakes a smile?
"Why do you continue to live like this Amoy?" She sighs.
"We both know this is how I was grown, this is the family I was born into, I want to prove myself." Her father scoffs.
"Prove yourself to them? They view you as they do me, a disgrace. I'm sorry but that's the harsh truth, they don't give second chances." She frowns, displeased but she also knew everything he said held truth.
"I won't let that stop me from being the best of best, I know if I work hard enough grandmother might choose me to be the inheritor of the company. Excuse me." They watched as she walked off, William sighs looking at Darius.
"What are your thoughts on this?"
"Your daughter is hardworking, she has proven herself worthy many times, your family sees that as a threat, which is one of the reasons they treat her the way they do."
"You're not just saying this because I'm your father in law are you?" Darius shook his head.
"I'm saying this because I mean it, your daughter treats me terribly but I know she means well." He smiles.
"I'm glad I choose you to be my son-in-law." This made Darius curious and confused again.
"Why did my parents just hand me to you?" William gave him a look of pity.
"That's a story for another time, should we mingle?"
"Amoy told me to stay put." His wife's father chuckles.
"Do you obey her like this all the time?" He nods.
"I don't want to ruin her chances of being something great, so I'll stay here as she asked." He patted him on the back.
"Good luck." He watched as William walked over to the maids engaging in a conversation this made Darius amused as Amoy's family watched displeased.
"What is he doing?" He heard Trinity.
"It seems your father has gone mad." Amoy's aunt, Lin states, Darius knew William could hear them but he chose to ignore them.
"William." It was a voice Darius had heard many times, all eyes went to the stairs as an ebony coloured woman walked down them with a frown, her hair was in a low bun a streak of white was mixed with her black, she wore a silver dress, along with an elegant pair flats, the look she gave William was dangerous. "We do not talk to the help."

- Chapter 2: Useless & Queen - William forced a smile, holding out his hand, which the woman took with much strength as he helped her down the stairs. "Mother, you look extraordinary as always." Her smile was tight, she took her hand from his, walking towards the dining hall. "Let's eat." Darius watched everyone strolled into the dining hall, he waited on Amoy and her father, while she scolded him, expressing her disappointment, it was quite amusing since he was the one who should have been doing that, the roles were always switched with them. Before her father even had a chance to speak she walked away going into the dining hall, Darius and William followed closely behind her, "She's angry at me." "I saw that," Darius said as they separated, he sat right of Amoy while William sat on her left. "Thank you all for joining me today." "Grandmother, I understand why you invited us, but why are they here?" Trinity i
- Chapter 3: Lily & Amoy - It was the next day, the sun had barely risen but Amoy was already up, getting ready for the challenges ahead. Darius, on the other hand, was still in bed, trying to sleep but he couldn't, as he had been woken up many times. "You're up, finally." He mumbled something not even he understood as he stretched yawning. " The coffee is yours, I bought you a suit and some new shoes, they're in the bathroom." He looked at the nightstand where the coffee stood, he immediately took a sip feeling his body waking up. "Thank you." She nods painting her lips a dark red. "Did they tell you what the challenge will be?" She shook her head brushing her hair. "Then why are you dressing so formally? For all, we know the challenge could be outside." She scoffs. "As if grandmother would go outside when it's the rainy season." He shrugs looking out the window seeing a group of maids taking horses from the stable.
- Chapter 4: Who & Daniel - When Darius and Amoy walked down the stairs all eyes went on them, making her family frown, Amoy wore a beautiful silver knee-length dress that stuck to her skin, her lips were red as usual, her hair was in an afro showing off her beautiful hair, face and smile. "Amoy, darling you look ravishing." One of her friends and coworker, Zane greeted her as they reached the bottom of the stairs, his eyes trailed her body shamelessly. "Darius." Her husband nod in acknowledgement. "Thank you, Zane." She gave him a tight smile. "Can we talk somewhere private?" They both could hear the suggestiveness in his tone, Amoy shook her head. "Later, excuse us." It was no secret that Zane and Amoy were sleeping together, well only Darius knew, it didn't bother him in fact he was fine with it. "Shawn told me this challenge is about business, he also said we should try and secure partnerships, stay beside me bu
- Chapter 5: Obvious & Questions - "Daniel was an old friend, I recently found out he was met by an accident, he's in the hospital fighting for his life but the doctors say there's is a fifty percent chance he'll live." He gave her a look of pity as they walked along the stone path. "I'm sor-" She shook her head stopping him, knowing the words that were about to leave him all too well. "Don't apologize, it's fine but why are you so interested in Daniel?" She inquired raising her sharp brow slightly. "My father-in-law, William, is hiding something from me and when I asked him who Daniel was he tried to avoid the topic." "He did tell me not to say anything to you-" Darius was ready to protest but she stopped him. "But I don't like to listen, so ask me anything." "What did Daniel do for a living?" "His family, the Atwoods are notorious for their jewellery business, I'm a fan of their jewellery myself, each is u
- Chapter 6: Damaged & Secret - Amoy woke up the next day around 5 am, Darius laid beside her sleeping soundly, she sighed wishing she had the ability to sleep that peacefully to look that free. She couldn't remember the last time she had a good night sleep. Pushing the sheets off she immediately felt a huge weight on her chest knowing the stressful day she had ahead of her, she was careful not to wake up Darius as she walked slowly and quietly to the bathroom, reaching her destination she softly closed the door behind herself. Turning to the sink she decided to wash her face to wake herself up, it really helped as she looked into the mirror, her brown eyes were pale along with her chestnut skin from the lack of food she ate during her time here. Amoy had an eating disorder, she had it from a young age which came from the constant comments about her body, she was a very chubby child, her family never missed an opportunity to comment on it
- Chapter 7: Zane & Amoy - A few days had passed Darius sat in the living room of Amoy's mansion, reading one of the books he had started to read before they went to the family mansion. "Sir would you like anything to drink?" Darius looked up from his back meeting the blue eyes of Amoy's butler, Xavier, he had been there for her, well he had been there for the entire family since birth, he was born into the life, his parents were a part of the staff when he grew up he became apart of the staff as well, he made it to the head of the staff but he gave that all up to go work for Amoy. "I told you to call me Darius and you don't need to get me a drink when I have two legs, in other words, I'm fine. Take a seat and join me, please." Xavier smiled doing as told. "What are you reading?" "No clue, but it's interesting. Whiskey?" He asked Xavier shook his head. "I can't drink on the job." Darius sighed pouring two glasses.
- Chapter 8: Emerald & Apologizes - Darius groaned hearing the sound of someone calling his name, he buried his face into his pillow, not ready to face the world today, he was way too tired. "Darius, an Emerald Green is on the phone for you." This caught his attention as he was suddenly wide awake, he sat up taking the phone from Xavier. "Thank you, Xavier." The butler sent him a nod leaving his room, this time he slept alone since there was no need to put up a facade anymore, he and Amoy had separate rooms as they weren't really married. "Hello?" Emerald's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. "Emerald, hi, how are you?" She chuckled. "Here I thought your first question would be, how I got your number, but I'm fine, thanks for asking, how are you?." He smiled she was right, that should have been his question. "I'm good, but how did you get my number?" "I'm rich, I found a way." He let out a small l
- Chapter 9: Broken & Home - "I doubt that, I'll talk to you later then?" He asked she smiled feeling a slight spark of happiness to have a friend, she really needed one. "Yeah, Goodbye." Emerald hung up turning back to the man who laid in the hospital, "That was your brother, he looks exactly like you. I know you would like him, he has a heart of gold." She waited for the response she knew was never gonna come, she couldn't help the tears that fell from her eyes. "Please come back to me." She cried into his chest feeling her heartbreak over and over again. Someone cleared their throat catching her attention, she wiped away her tears facing the person at the door. William stood watching her, it broke his heart to see her sad, like it broke his heart to see Daniel quiet not making horrible jokes they would laugh at. "I can come back later." She shook her head holding her hand out which took in a few steps. He took a seat beside her
- Chapter 28: Eat & Code - Darius's P.O.V When we got home Amoy immediately went upstairs while speaking to someone on the phone. “How long has she been like that?” Xavier asked as he entered the room. “The entire car ride over. Do you think the news will blow over?” He shrugged letting out a sigh. “I’m not sure. Maybe.” The uncertainty in his voice told me this would probably go on for weeks. “Did you make breakfast? She hasn’t eaten all day.” He shook his head. “I was just about to go out and meet a friend, but I can—” I stopped him as I offered him a smile.
- Chapter 27: Headline & Drained - Darius P.O.V I woke up the next day with arms around my body, I smiled down at Amoy who slept peacefully beside me. This was probably the first time I’ve seen her so relaxed besides last night. I reached for my phone to check the time. It was 7 AM, shocking me. Amoy was usually up before 5 or 6, I wondered how long she stayed out on the balcony. I slowly and quietly removed her hands off me, replacing my body with a pillow before going into the bathroom, taking a shower and brushing my teeth. I was in the bathroom for a good 15 minutes
- Chapter 26: Favour & Tip - Darius's P.O.V Dinner went on without a hitch, I was a little surprised Elizabeth hadn't tried to insult me or Amoy. Maybe the discovery of her most prized grandchild's company going bankrupt left her more flush than she was willing to admit. I silently watched as everyone gathered around the piano watching Olivia play a sweet melody. She was also another one of Amoy's competitors, I only knew so little of her, though her parents, Joseph and Kayla never stopped bragging about her fashion business. They said she dressed celebrities like Rihanna and Taylor. I had to admit though I barely spoke to her, she seemed down to earth and friendly, I mean in this family someone who didn't speak to you was as friendly as you could get. My eyes went to the rest of my wife's competition. Zavana stood next to O
- Chapter 25: Guess & Useless - Darius zipped his suitcase close, before bringing it downstairs where Amoy, William and Xavier were engaged in a conversation, but they all turned to him, hearing his footsteps and his suitcase against the stairs. “Good morning.” He greeted them tiredly, they all responded. Amoy’s eyes lingered on him for a second before returning her attention to her father. “That’s what this whole trip is about? Who told you this?” Amoy interrogated her father, he didn’t seem to mind as he spoke. “Shawn, the butler.” “So the men will be tested for 4 days?” He nodded, catching Darius’s attention, “What’s goin
- Chapter 24: No & Thoughts - Darius sat in his chair, still not knowing what to write; it was as if he had all the words but couldn’t put them into words. He had promised himself that today was the day he was gonna finally put his hands and mind to work and write something good that he could be proud of, even though it wouldn't be his best work, it would be something to remember. Closing his eyes thought of every possible line he could begin with, but they all just didn’t seem to be enough. He sighed, hearing a knock on his door, he expected to see Xavier, but instead, Amoy entered his room, with a tray with dinner on it. “This is the last thing I expected you’d be doing,” Darius stated as she placed the tray on his
- Chapter 23: Space & Daniel - It was the next day, Darius was growing nervous about what today had in store for him...what she had in store for him. After the kitchen incident, they had both parted ways but Amoy had never left his mind. She was like a hangover after a party. He had already showered and gotten dressed but he still needed to go down for breakfast the task seemed almost impossible as his mind made up a thousand scenarios, before he could think about it further his phone began to hang. Darius took it from the bedside table reading the I.D caller, 'Emerald' He hadn't heard from her in days, he was a little worried but he knew she was alright and the call confirmed it. “Emerald, how are you?” He asked sitting up, on his bed
- Chapter 22: You & Us - Faith and Oscar looked through the photos of Darius and his wife eating at the food truck, "They're getting very close, I wonder if she's the reason he hasn't tried to take down the Tyler family." Oscar voiced. Faith shook her head disagreeing. "She'll be the reason he uses the information I gave him. Her family treats them both like nothing so not only will he want to protect himself, he'll want to protect her." Her husband grinned at her, loving her she thought. "You are amazing." He stated placing a quick kiss on her cheek. "Now all we need to do is wait for their next family gathering, which, lucky for us is 2 days from now." - Darius sat in Amoy's office drained from all the meetings he had to attend, Amoy on the other hand looked perfectly fine as she was still working. "I don't know how you do this every day." He spoke, taking her attention from the laptop and papers in front of her.
- Chapter 21: Truck & Food - The sound of the door opening broke them apart, he moved back to his chair while she leaned against the table. Zane entered but halted once he saw Darius sitting in Amoy's office, a look of surprise crossed his face but he quickly hid it as he faced Amoy. "Zane, what do you need?" She asked him walking back to her chair taking a seat. "I was going to walk you to your first meeting since I'll be there too." Darius couldn't tell if that was the truth or a clever lie to cover up what he really came here for. "No need, Darius will walk me." She told him wanting this conversation to be over fast, she could tell Darius wanted the same as he was shooting daggers at Zane which made her wonder, was he jealous? She quickly shook that thought away turning back to Zane. "Is that all?" She asked, he nodded not saying another word before he left. "I thought the meeting didn't start in a few hours," Darius stated, con
- Chapter 20: Darius & Confidence - When Darius woke up, it wasn't because of an alarm or Xavier. It was Amoy, "Wake up, you need to get ready we can't be late." He sighed opening his eyes, he expected to meet her chocolate ones but instead, all he saw was her back as she sat on his bed slipping her feet into her heels. Her natural hair was hidden under her bonnet since she didn't want it to get messed up before she left for work. She wore a navy blue dress, along with a jacket that was slightly lighter than it. Her significant scent was stronger as she was just inches away from him. Even though he could only see her back, he could tell she looked amazing. "Get up, you have 20 minutes to get dress and eat breakfast." She informed him rising from the bed, turning to him as he got up, her eyes immediately took in his body while he stood, half-naked in front of her. "Ok?" She questioned taking her eyes off his body despite the urge she felt t
