*THIRD PERSON POV*
Two years earlier……………..
“How is my son?” The distress in Luna Phoebe’s voice could not be helped. Flabbergasted by the surgeon's hampering gestures, she retorted, “Doctor?”
Dr. Timothy Mosi blocked the Luna’s path to restrict her from entering the operating room at the hospital on the third floor. Unconscious and covered in blood, they had just pushed Heron through the swinging double door on the gurney. Blood gushed from his lower regions to the extent that it left red trails on the white tiled floor. The Luna seemed to be on the verge of cracking under worry.
"Luna, we won't know until you allow us the chance to examine him." Dressed in light blue surgical gown, head cap and gloves, the male doctor spoke hurriedly through the mask, "Time is of the essence. Please let us do our job."
Unwillingly, she staggered backwards, waiting on the outside as time went by. Under the duress of grief, her long blue-black messy hair of chunky layers slightly covered a tear-stained distraught face. Her icy-blue iris sat in a reddened pool of swollen sockets, itching to shed more tears.
Luna Phoebe needed to hear some good news. Anxiously, she paced the hallway, hugging herself. Unaware of how grave her son's condition was, because she had not seen him since the Beta brought him home, she could not stay still. The entire floor was clear of all other patients, reserved only for the high authorities of the pack.
Heron was her severely injured sixteen-year-old child behind those turquoise standard steel doors.
Three additional nurses went inside and it's been hours since anyone came out of the theater. From the hallway, Phoebe demanded to hear from someone so they could let her see him. Just a peek of him would do for now. However, no one came out to provid information, after the Head Pack Doctor had prohibited her from entering the room where her son was admitted. She was uncertain of how long she could maintain her composure and cooperation before the lid was blown and she'd storm inside.
Thanks to her husband, Hudson, the rescue operation had just achieved success. Beta Dwayne had taken Heron home but first to the hospital after notifying Phoebe of the bittersweet report. Abducted outside of pack territories, he had been the victim of a heinous enterprise of unlawful testing.
Alpha Hudson had been detained with chasing after the mad scientist who experimented on their son, holding him hostage for the past two months.
With him were half of the pack’s warriors, and they duly searched the antique buildings and tunnels for his whereabouts, but it seemed that the loony scientist, Dr. Ector Whorms, and his team had disappeared in a secret passage that was yet to be discovered.
When next Dr. Mosi poked his head out to instruct a nurse, Phoebe grabbed him by the sleeve of his surgical gown. “Don’t let me ask you another time without you answering me.” Her powerful Luna aura seeped out with great intimidation.
“Luna,” the doctor pacified her but added a note of urgency, “We are going to operate. He’s in bad shape. The faster you let me to start the surgery, the quicker he might recover, and you can see him right after.”
"Go," her voice cracked and caught in her throat. Shaken and terrified, she released the doctor, knowing that he was right.
Those scumbags had to pay for hurting her son. The anger surfaced every now and then. Everyone in the hospital shuffled around woefully because their future Alpha’s life was at stake. Sorrowful eyes of sympathy were directed on her but feeling slightly drained, she had no time to pay anyone else any attention.
Phoebe resumed pacing back and forced endlessly. Apprehension coated her grief-stricken face. Hudson was not yet at her side when she needed his reassurance that their son was going to be okay. He had been working relentlessly on hunting down the bastard rogues who attacked the teenagers in their car on their way back from the amusement park that was situated in a small human town, a few miles from the borders.
Heron was taking his newly courted girlfriend on their first date, along with friends, when rogues attacked them. They gave no interest to anyone else in the car except the Alpha’s son, whom they abducted. For days neither she nor Hudson slept, and warriors worked incessantly until they were able to rescue Heron.
Just as the sun was rising and the morning sky was taking on a tinted pink to softly beam on the city streets, ushering in a bustle of early-morning activity. Hudson had found Heron in a dimly lit tunnel chained to a black operating table, lying on his stomach with his lower back cut open. There was enough silver and wolfsbane in his system to hinder any form of healing. Additionally, he was barely breathing and was incoherent about everything.
“Darling.”
Phoebe whipped her head around to find Hudson walking rapidly towards her, still clad in his black military suit. He ran a hand through his long sily black hair, then wiped dripping perspiration from his forehead before welcoming her into a long compassionate embrace. Her arms tightened around him as he held her with all the love in his heart.
“Did you catch the lunatic?” Phoebe queried, looking into his emerald eyes with deep hatred for the enemy. The anger towards the mad scientist fermented deeply.
“No,” he sadly replied and wiped her teary face with his thick fingers. “How is Heron?”
“The doctors are with him,” Phoebe sobbed, the reality ripped at her heart. “It’s not looking good.”
Hudson’s heart constricted with grief as he hurt for his only son, and he strived to comfort his despairing wife. “He is strong and he will pull through. I believe in him.”
Staying in each other's hold comforted the two as they waited for news from the doctors. After five hours, Dr. Mosi emerged from the theater, “Luna, Alpha.”
Phoebe broke out of her husband’s embrace and met the doctor at the door. Hudson stood exactly behind her.
“Heron is alive and he will recover in due time,” He removed his surgical gloves and cap from his spiky blond head. “However, I’m afraid that the damage done to his spinal cord might lead to permanent paralysis.”
“Paralysis in what way?” Hudson spoke as Phoebe covered her mouth and silently sobbed. Taking the news as though it was a massive blow to the skull. He put his hand around her waist and pulled her to his side.
“The damage committed by the crazed scientist left spaces in his spine marrow, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. He affected the nerve bundle that exits the base of the brain and travels down the middle of the spine by removing two discs. There was severe harm done to the nerve roots that detached from the cord.” Dr. Mosi tragically explained with a heavy heart and pulled the mask from his mouth down to his chin. “To summarize it all, Heron is crippled from the waist down.”
Phoebe gave a disbelieving chuckle, shaking her head. “No.”
“We are werewolves with fast healing abilities,” Hudson retorted, because he could not comprehend why Dr. Mosi was telling them that his spine could not heal.
“Yes Alpha,” he chose his words cautiously, though he was confident in his prognosis. “But discs were removed. We can input metal rods to hold the spine in place but the disruption of the nerve roots does not allow for Heron to be able to walk."
“Oh goddess!” An appalled Phoebe fell to the ground, snivelling in misery. A headache suddenly presented itself as her son’s demise replayed in her mind, a thousand times. Hudson quickly picked her up, holding her bridal style. His lips were pressed together in dismay.
"Later, after his recovery, we could conduct stimulating exercises to see if there could be progress.” Dr. Mosi made an effort to cast a more favorable light based on Luna's poignant discomposure.
For Alpha Hudson and Luna Phoebe, it was not enough to put them at ease. Not when their son would suffer tremendously. A pack is only as powerful as its leaders, and Heron was the FireBricks Pack's next Alpha and leader. As parents, they refused to accept that nothing else could be done.
“The anesthesia will be in his system for about twenty-four hours. We will transfer him to a private room until he wakes up.” Dr. Mosi continued to relate.
“Doctor, I don’t care what it takes,” Hudson raged with features of an ice-cold mask, “But find a way to help my son, even if it means that nobody sleeps!”
The doctor gulped with fear and his heart raced as the Alpha's dangerously dark aura plummeted throughout the hospital. Pack members shivered as they felt his wrath through the link. His bad mood was duly noted as everyone fell in silence and went around on pins and needles, being mindful of their actions.
That day, Alpha Hudson made a vow to search every crook and corner to find the scoundrels to avenge the damage done to his son. Ever since he took down the Vampire Lord Barabbas Lorcan more than a decade ago, his minions black-labelled his pack and recently they had been fishing in proximity to his territory. They didn’t do anything until that night when Heron disobediently went out of territory with his friends. He should have been more careful, but that was water under the bridge.
What mattered now was to send that demented nut a message that you don’t fuck with the Carters.
-
-HERON'S POV- “Alpha Carter, we would love for you to join the Batch for the fall semester,” Dean Vassell tells me, but I have no interest in being here. His nut brown eyes flickered nervously with a fleeting smile. Balking, I was in his office under my father’s constant nagging to further my education. Impassively, I took the pamphlet out of his hand to look at the programs to decide what to pursue. “I’ll review these before making a decision.” The Dean of Luckingham College stood from his desk and bowed, “Have a good day, Alpha.” I wheeled out of his office, and down the corridor of the college halls. Dad wanted me to resume my studies and so I obliged. He was trying to help me get my life on track and take over the pack, but to be honest, I believe that my sister, Pandia, was very much capable of being their Alpha instead of me. The were-kingdom was a patriarchal society and so the elders were skeptical of having a female running the pack. However, from my perspective, Pandia w
-HERON'S POV- Sensing my wrath, Forbes did to the guy, what I channeled to him through our mental link. He kneed him in the groin, sending him to the floor once more, clutching his mid area in agony. He sputters from the blow and coughs as spit flies from his mouth. His face gives the most horrendous sight. “Tell us what we need to know,” Sage angrily demands while he stands at my side. The strategy is ever the same. Forbes lunges and attacks the enemy, but Sage protects me by not leaving my side. “She’s a troublemaker who doesn’t know how to behave for her own good,” the dark-skinned guy retorted as he leaned his injured frame against the wall for support. “We will find her.” In my mind, I was thinking of the many ways that I wished to send him to hell. Feeling disgusted by their presence, I thought that they should all die. But they knew my mate and I had to get information to find her. “As of now she is no longer your concern,” Sage snarled at the douchebag, “If you do find he
*HERON’S POV* Sitting around the dinner table, my sister snuck up from behind and hugged me. “What’s up, little brother?” Her infectious smile always made my mouth curve into one as well. “Pretty much the same. You know how boring I am.” A frown subdued her features as her lips thinned. “If your life is so uneventful, why don’t you make things happen for yourself? Go visit your friends from high school or start college.” I glanced at Mom, who refused to look at me. She must have egged Pandia into being her accomplice. The obvious guilt was plastered on her face. “My life is fine as it is.” Dad had not joined us yet. Usually, Mom does not allow us to begin without his presence. So, something must be keeping him away. However, my Beta and Delta were here with me. “Your commanding officers should not be cooped up in an isolated cottage. If you lived here, they could contribute much more to operations.” Pandia was a replica of our Mom. Don’t tell me I will have to endure both of the
****TRIGGER WARNING: This chapter covers abuse***** *MIKAYLA’S POV* SLAP! A sudden pain stung across my right cheek. The impact of her palm sent me into shock as I tried to grasp what she had done to me. My lips busted as she gave me a second slap with imprints of her five fingers. “You bitch!” She coldly scolds, “I told you to stay away from Archie!” She lifted her right hand again and I caught it. “Pam, what’s gotten into you?” I shrieked in astonishment and shoved her hand away. I was in the kitchen collecting the dirty hand towels and mittens to take them down to the laundry. Here, at the pack house, I was one of the laundry staff. She popped behind me on the stairs going down to the basement. Sensing her behind me, I turned and was greeted by a waspish slap, then she pushed me. The basket and everything went out of my hands as I fell and my head collided with the cold tiled ground. Orphans are ranked as omegas within the werewolf kingdom. Having no living parents meant t
*MIKAYLA’S POV* Tremors filled my insides as I knocked on the door of the second study, west of the pack house. Closing my eyes, I inhaled sharply to quiet my nerves, though the rapid drumming of my heart prevailed. Lowering my head, I longingly stared at the door handle in my hand before entering the room. “Is this her?” After entering the room, I stood the standardized seven feet from the seated Luna. My hands were to my sides, fidgeting with my uniform. The heat of the Luna’s gaze filtered into the room, and multiplied my anxiety. “Yes, Luna,” Cecilia answered. My head was slightly raised to acknowledge the beautiful black hair Luna before me. She sat with her legs crossed on the white leather love seat. Matron Cecilia ceremoniously stood at her left side, overlapping her hands. Luna Phoebe had a clean complexion and highlighted her blue eyes with beige eye shadow and black winged eyeliner. Nude lip gloss painted her full lips and she wore a slim-fitted denim dress with a tur
*MIKAYLA’S POV* In the enormous dining room, I walked over to the Luna’s side. Everything that they said twirled round and round in my head as the conversation carried on. There were three angry people at the table after she made the announcement that created the raucous. With my head kept lowered, I nervously fidgeted as the Luna spoke, “Heron, this is Mikayla and she will be your new maid.” “What the hell for?” he snapped, his face contorting with revulsion and I felt my gut twist. “Don’t speak to your Mom like that,” Alpha Hudson warned his son, and he emits a growl. Then he carved into his steak. “Omega Nikki will be permanently assigned here while Mikayla takes over at the cottage.” The Luna frowns but continued to tell the young Alpha, “She will prepare your meals and do daily housekeeping. The purpose of her being there is to free up Forbes and Sage for other matters." “So you are giving me another fucking babysitter?” He glares at me and my wolf whimpers as his aura becom
*MIKAYLA’S POV* Early the following morning, after a fitful night, I got dressed quietly in a state of inflated dismay. The only things I had with me were my backpack and two old medium-sized duffle bags in which I had to sew the holes closed before I could utilize them. Sad to say, but money was a constant strain. Pam and I both graduated from high school but were unable to attend college. Wages from the pack house were minimal and only catered for fundamental necessities. My room was a 7x8 old, drafty room. A single window, dark, unpainted walls, and a two-inch mattress on the floor made the containment. Curtains and other furniture were absent. I did not ask the matron for anything because I refused to be a bother, unless they offered, though my meals there were free. I chose this on the premise of having privacy, rather than sharing rooms with bratty kids and bunked beds. I had hoped to buy a small bed although I knew that I'd have to move out eventually. Whereas some Omegas res
*MIKAYLA’S POV* Why did I roll my eyes at the Alpha? When did I get so brave? Based on his major dislike of me, I’m sure that he won’t let me off. I exited the cottage with Forbes leading the way to a white open-top jeep wrangler that was parked under a large oak tree. He got into the driver's seat and I stood there like an idiot. His eyebrows raised at me, "What are you waiting for? Get in." Climbing in the passenger's seat increased my apprehension. I inhaled, then exhaled harshly. An Uber could have taken me to the supermarket and back. I had no problem with that. Although the fare would be costly because the cottage was in the middle of the forest, which is a nowhere town. The presence of these powerful men made me feel like I wanted to pee myself, so I was not asking to be chauffeured. He fired up the engine and back out of the driveway. Making a curved turn, he steered the jeep onto the graveled path for vehicles leaving the dense forest. I was quiet. Forbes was a commandin

Four years later….. -HERON’S POV* "So listen up people," I will have no nonsense today and they better not argue over this. "Tonight is a special night for me and my woman." I was fucking serious about this. Mikayla and I have been so busy that we hardly spent enough time with each other. Tonight was arranged for us to have a romantic dinner at a resort. Mikayla promised me that we could have this night together. So I met with the people in our pack who have been closest to her and caused her the most trouble, to give them a piece of my mind. "Mikayla is lovable and we all adore her,” I get that she’s a blessing. After all, no one loved her more than I did. “BUT, tonight I need to have her for myself." I demanded, "I'm the Alpha and I'm laying down some ground rules for the both of you." I’m the luckiest man in the world to have her as my wife and these two have been trying to get in between what we have. The male scrunched his face and pouted his mouth, while the other smiled a
PART 2 - -PREYA’S POV* Zixuan took me to lunch. He’s not my mate. Without my wolf, I was uncertain if I'd sense or scent my mate. My birthday felt bummed and I didn’t want to celebrate. I entered the foyer of pack house. I sported my favorite color today, looking quite petite in my light blue wrap romper with short sleeves, surplice neckline, and skirt overlay. I came to hang out with Amber for a while when a loud screeching was heard from outside. Turning around in curiosity, I spotted Sage’s car with smoke at the tires. Overriding the sinking feeling in my stomach, I rolled my eyes at his dramatic entrance. Giving him little importance, I spun around and accidentally bumped into an Omega who dropped a tray of empty wine glasses that shattered to the floor. Damn! “I’m sorry,” I apologized. The Omega appeared like she was going to cry. Oh no! I spoiled her day. I bent to help her tidy up. “Please let me clean it up,” she offered. “It’s my fault. I’ll let Beta Dwayne tell the ma
PART 1 - Two weeks later..... -PREYA’S POV* Over in Primese Forest, I sat on the ground with my mated parents at 11:55 pm, five minutes away from my birthday. My back rested against a sandalwood tree feeling anxious and worried. My Dad, Senior Warrior Brian Delvaux, is a full-blooded werewolf and towers over me at 6’2'. He is chocolate colored with wavy black hair and gimlet blue eyes. He had a patrician nose and hirsute, bible-black eyebrows on an artist's face. Mom gave me a reassuring smile, “Honey, it will be alright.” They understood my glum mood and apprehension. “We’ll be here with you through the process,” Dad said sweetly, then glanced at the mired beauty of the moon. The silver deity of the submerged night embellished the still forest with its serene sweetness as we waited. “Thanks, Dad,” I replied, with a wildly beating heart. Because I have witch blood, I feared that I might not shift. This added to my further concerns about having a mate if I had no wolf. The mental
-MIKAYLA’S POV* Preya and Amoy did all our makeup. They are the beauty queens of the group and they spent twenty minutes painting my face with silver eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and haute pink ultra-shine lip gloss. Luna Phoebe and Grandma Melody, the former Luna, joined us in Heron’s room at the pack house with my dress. “We hope you like it,” Grandma Melody chimed, optimistically. I donned the silver sweetheart neckline, full lace beach backless mermaid gown with a 3" 4” heel silver satin lace ribbon open-toe shoes. On my tight curls waterfall hairstyle, I wore a headwear diadem of white gold lined with 1, 222 diamonds, including the 102-carat pale blue brilliant diamond at the center which also includes pearls, and its design features roses, thistles, and orchids in honor of the fairy realm. Chippy brought it as a gift from Aunt Katinka. Preya squealed and clapped. “You look amazing!” When I stood in front of the mirror, I barely recognized myself. The girls gasped, “Wow.”
-HERON’S POV* An uproar of celebration came from the pack. The tidal surge of happiness and gaiety tsunamis through the state. Everyone now understands that Mikayla was framed and innocently sent to her death. Tapping into the pack’s connection, I felt each Elders' remorse. With a mild injection of sorrow, many wished that their true Luna did not die and was present at this crucial moment of truth. Sage, who I’m still pissed at, hands me some wipes to clean my bloody hand. I glared at him while pulling the sheets of wipes out and sanitizing my hand. “Alpha, I said that I was sorry.” He penitently bowed his head. Solemnly, I turned my head away from him, paying attention to my fingernails and getting the blood out. “Can you bake, Sage?” I scowled. The sizzling anger rebounds. “N-no,” he stuttered. As a result of being under the heat of his alpha, he tugs at the collar of his shirt, which seemingly tightened. Then he nervously suggested, “Maybe Forbes could bake them.” Growling, I
-HERON’S POV* Today, my countenance has a smiley face. The pineapple tarts were delicious. I left two in the refrigerator because I did not want to finish them all at once. This morning, Sage inadvertently ate one. I almost murdered him. Tyr shifted in the kitchen to rip his throat out and it took Axel and Forbes to pry me off my Beta. They were made with love and it was that love that flittered around my heart. Sage had no right to interfere with my treat. They were sentimental and specially made for me. My Beta better avoid the cottage for a while. Tyr was still fuming over it and not in a magnanimous mood. Charlotte didn’t leave the cottage until noon. Rosalie accepted my invitation to have breakfast with me. In one conversation, a lot can be summarized. To be honest, my decision was made. Naming her my Luna would get the elders to simmer down. There was no use prolonging this further. Then the rest should automatically go according to plan. Demi and I messaged each other a lot.
-HERON’S POV*Square one.I’m back at square one. It's amazing that, after Mikayla's death, I was expected to pick up the pace and choose another Luna. The whole scenario sired a headache. It was after Mikayla’s death that I realized that Mom truly liked her. Mom cried after the execution and even father had to console her. While Mom gives Charlotte things to do in the pack, acting like her executive assistant, she will never be my Mikayla. No one can.For now, Charlotte stands at my side. She stays at the pack house and is elated to be out of the cells. As expected, she goes around as though she runs the damn pack. Displaying qualities she deemed a born leader. I leave her be. Whilst, I cater to her essential needs. Pitifully, Charlotte kisses Mom’s ass and sucks up to Dad.I miss waking up to Mikayla's pale luminous skin in the weak morning light. My sugar fairy Luna. I shut myself in my room for the past three days and didn’t speak to anyone. I didn’t work. Didn’t return any calls
-MIKAYLA’S POV* Barefooted, I was clad in a long red gown that touched the ground. Red signified the shedding of blood and sinfulness. It's the day of my death for the crimes that I did not commit. I had to walk the crucifixion path from the cottage to Davidan Forest, which is south of the territory. With the soles of my feet grated against the dirt and pebbles, I came upon a clearing in the middle of the forest where the sun scorched the green pigmentation from the grass, turning it brown and crisp. The fierce sun's combative photons, which scorched my ivory skin, had no wind to temper them. Amidst the green field was the stake consisting of a tall pillar with a large pile of firewood and stones at the base for torching. All the Elders stood to the left, while the Alpha and Luna and warriors were on the right. Valen was at the stake, waiting for me. Because Heron had marked me, the majority of the pack was mournful. I felt their pain, while they felt mine. I gripped the sides of
