THE PAST
CHAPTER ONE: DR. LEE
LOVE ANDREI LEE
(Eight months ago)
“Good morning, Dr. Lee.”
I gave the student who greeted me a slight nod as I continued walking down the hallway. Bukod sa pagiging doktor, it was also my debut as a lecturer in the medicine course at Lee University.
As I entered the lecture hall, the once noisy and bustling atmosphere instantly quieted down. All eyes turned toward me, their gazes following every step I took toward the front of the room. Then came the whispers, hushed but clear enough for me to catch snippets of their conversation.
“Oh my gosh. He’s so handsome.”
“Wait... is Dr. Lee our professor?”
“Sh*t. Young doctor and professor. Mukhang magiging study first ako from now on.”
I couldn’t help but shake my head ever so slightly. This was exactly what I wanted to avoid—being the center of attention for all the wrong reasons.
Pulling their focus back to the purpose of the class, I addressed them in a firm, professional voice. “Good morning, everyone. As some of you may have already guessed, I am Dr. Love Andrei Lee. You can just call me Dr. Lee,” I began, my tone calm yet assertive. “I’ll be your professor for this semester, and I’ll be handling Human Anatomy and Physiology. It’s one of the most fundamental subjects in medicine, and mastering it is crucial for your journey as future doctors.”
There was a collective reaction—a mix of excitement, nerves, and murmurs from the students.
“I know many of you might feel overwhelmed,” I continued, scanning the room to meet as many eyes as possible. “Anatomy isn’t just about memorizing—”
Nakatitig din siya sa ‘kin, but there was something different about her gaze.
Out of all the female students in the room, she was the only one who didn’t look at me as if I were some kind of idol to worship. Her expression was utterly plain, almost indifferent—like she was bored of me. There was no hint of fascination, no glimmer of interest in my words, and definitely no appreciation for how handsome I looked.
It was... unsettling, yet oddly intriguing. Who is she?
“—the parts of the body; it’s about understanding how these systems work together to sustain life,” I managed to continue nang alisin ko ang tingin ko sa kaniya. These subject lays the foundation for everything you will learn moving forward, from clinical practices to diagnostics and surgery.”
“I’ll be honest—it won’t be easy. But I’m here to guide you through it. If you’re willing to put in the effort, I’ll make sure you leave this class not just with knowledge, but with a deeper appreciation for the human body and its intricacies.”
There was another murmur of reactions—some looked determined, others intimidated. At dahil do’n lalo akong naintriga.
There’s something about the quiet indifference, the lack of effort to impress, that piques my curiosity.
“Before we dive into the syllabus, I’d like to set a few expectations. First, I value active participation. Ask questions, engage in discussions, and don’t hesitate to approach me if you need help. Second, this is a safe space for learning, and mistakes are part of the process. And lastly,” I said, my gaze sweeping the room, “this course will demand your commitment, not just your attendance. Excellence in medicine begins with discipline.”
I could see a few students exchanging glances, clearly taking the words to heart.
“For today, we’ll start with an overview of the human organ systems and their functions,” I said, turning to the whiteboard. “Let’s get started.”
Pero bago pa man ako makapagsimula, may isang babaeng tumawag sa ‘kin. “Dr. Lee, I have a question before we start.”
“Yes?” Bumaling muli ako sa kanila. “Ano ‘yon?”
“Do you have a girlfriend?”
The question caught me off guard. Saglit akong hindi nakapagsalita. Of all the things she could’ve asked, I didn’t expect something so personal. I was ready for questions about the syllabus or even about the demands of the course, but this?
“Hindi makasagot si Dr. Lee, mukhang meron,” one of the students teased, sparking a wave of hushed whispers across the room. The students were now buzzing with curiosity, speculating about who this supposed “lucky girl” might be.
I cleared my throat, deciding to put an end to the conversation. “I don’t have a girlfriend,” I replied, my voice steady and measured. “But that doesn’t mean I’m available.”
With a slight tilt of my head, I looked at the student who asked the question. “Now that we’ve clarified that, let’s keep our focus on the subject matter, shall we? And oh, by the way, moving forward, I won’t tolerate personal questions during class. You’re free to ask me anything while we’re in session, but it must be related to what we’re studying. If your questions are about my personal life, save them for after class and ask me outside this room.”
I turned back to the whiteboard and began writing, not missing the faint murmurs of disappointment and fascination behind me. Despite their chatter, I knew I had successfully redirected their attention back to where it needed to be—on the lesson, not on me.
“Present,” she said, her tone flat, as she walked toward the door. My eyes followed her, curious about her nonchalant demeanor.
Her directness caught me off guard. For a second, I just stood there, surprised by her boldness. But before I could stop myself, a faint smirk tugged at the corner of my lips. “Are you ordering me around, Villaflor?”
She didn’t flinch. “Nag-su-suggest lang po ako,” she replied casually. Then, with a small gesture, she pointed at my tie. “By the way, your tie doesn’t suit you. You should wear light colors. They’d complement your skin tone better.”
For a moment, I didn’t know whether to be amused or annoyed. Her audacity was both frustrating and… oddly refreshing. My necktie probably caught more of her attention than my appearance. And this is the first time I’ve encountered a woman who didn’t notice my good looks, but instead, focused on my necktie.
She didn’t look back again as she walked out, leaving me standing there, caught between shaking my head and laughing.
“Aria Villaflor,” I murmured under my breath, glancing back at my attendance sheet. “Noted.”
Only during the family dinners Mom made sure to organize at least once a week.“It’s going well, Dad,” I replied with a small nod.“Aren’t you getting bored, Kuya?” Summer chimed in, her tone curious.I paused for a moment, her question making me reflect. My mind wandered back sa isang linggo kong pagtuturo sa College of Medicine. Initially, I thought I’d find it dull—just another routine in my already packed life. Bored? No. In fact, her presence in my class had become something I looked forward to. Her sharp tongue, her unapologetic demeanor, the way she seemed unimpressed by me—it was refreshing, almost c
THE PASTCHAPTER THREE: CONFESSIONLOVE ANDREI LEESa loob ng isang buwang pagtuturo ko sa Lee University, mas nakilala ko pa si Aria. She’s brilliant. That’s part of what intrigues me about her. She’s such a simple woman, unassuming in her demeanor, and yet kakaiba ang talas ng isip niya. From what I’ve overheard, she’s a full scholar sponsored by the mayor of her hometown. That’s how she’s able to study here at Lee University, which is, without question, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. That fact added another layer of admiration—I could only imagine how much effort and determination it must take to balance everything and thrive the way she does. And yet, despite everything I’ve learned about her, she still remains a puz
But no matter how much I reminded myself of that, I just couldn’t ignore her. I didn’t know why. There was something about her, something intangible, that kept pulling me toward her like a magnet. Even when I tried to resist, it was as if the universe itself was nudging me in her direction.“Dito na lang, Dr. Lee.” It was an old structure, situated along the highway. As she unbuckled her seatbelt, I glanced at her briefly, a strange heaviness settling in my chest. I shouldn’t have cared where she lived, but somehow,
THE PASTCHAPTER FIVE: SHE SAID YESLOVE ANDREI LEEIsang buwan na simula nang ligawan ko si Aria. I know I shouldn’t have, but I chose to follow what my heart wanted. And that was to be with her.At first, she was shocked—and she rejected me right away. She brought up my family’s tradition of arranged marriages, something she was well aware of. And she said she didn’t want to ruin a union that had already been planned long before.
My eyes were locked on the patient lying on the operating table—a 45-year-old man who’d been rushed in with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Nakakalungkot, but as a surgeon, I couldn’t let that number weigh me down. All I could do was focus on what needed to be done.“Magsisimula na tayo. Time was our greatest enemy. For a while, it seemed like
THE PASTCHAPTER SEVENLOVE ANDREI LEEHer lips against mine were intoxicating. Every kiss felt like a lifeline, pulling me further from the darkness that had been suffocating me all night. I didn’t want to stop, and from the way she responded—her hands finding their way to my shoulders, clutching me closer—I could tell she didn’t want to stop either. She let out a soft gasp, and it sent a shiver down my spine, igniting something primal inside me.Without breaking the kiss, muli ko siyang inalalayan at humakbang ako na buhat pa rin siya. She wrapped her arms around my neck, her eyes locked onto mine as if questioning what I intended to do.I carried her to the bed and carefully laid her down, the soft mattress creaking under her weight.
THE PASTCHAPTER EIGHTLOVE ANDREI LEEIt’s been two weeks simula noong may nangyari sa ‘min ni Aria. Every day, the thought of telling Mom and Dad about us weighs heavily on my mind. I want to let them know about our relationship, to finally reject the arranged marriage they’ve been planning for me dahil alam kong ako na ang susunod kay Hope.I want to make things official with Aria. I want her to be the one I introduce as the woman I’ve chosen, the one I want to spend my life with. But I can’t.Noong gabi na ‘yon bago ‘ko umalis sa apartment niya kinausap ko siya. I told her my plans, thinking she’d be relieved or happy. She was shy and hesitant, worried about how my family might perceive her.Wala pa raw siyang ipagmamalaki. She was worried my parents might think she was only after my money, even though I assured her that my family wasn’t like that. Kilala ko
THE PASTCHAPTER NINELOVE ANDREI LEE“Tell me about your dream house,” sabi ko kay Aria habang magkatabi kaming nakahiga sa kama niya. Pareho kaming walang saplot, our bodies covered only by a shared blanket.I had come straight here after my shift at the hospital. I brought groceries and other essentials she might need—daily supplies, personal hygiene products, and even a variety of fresh fruits. At first, sinermonan na naman niya ako, pero kalaunan naging okay rin kami no’ng sinabi kong gusto kong gawin ‘yon para sa kaniya.Hours later, after sharing the McDonald’s I’d brought for dinner, we found ourselves here again, tangled up in her sheets. It had become a regular part of my visits, and every time I initiated, she never said no.

CHAPTER SIXTEENLOVE ANDREI LEE‘A simple outfit by Euphrosyne Saoirse Arcanway—baggy jeans and a plain cropped top—has once again captured the attention of netizens on social media. Many claim that even if she wore rags, she’d still look fashionable.’I sighed, backing out of the article and shaking my head as I turned to tidy up the clutter on my desk. But instead of finding relief, I only felt more stressed. Every scroll brought me face-to-face with posts, articles, and endless chatter about Ishay. Her name was everywhere—every trending topic, every headline.“Euphrosyne Saoirse Arcanway stuns yet again.”“Is Ishay the perfect match for the Lees?”“She’s the epitome of elegance and beauty.”Alam na ng mga tao ang tungkol sa nalalapit naming engagement dahil isinapubliko na ‘yon ni Mommyla. Ginamit niy
I had also laid out my condition—the financial assistance I needed for my family’s situation. At the time, however, she said it wasn’t the right moment. Kabe-break lang daw kasi Love Andrei Lee sa nobya niya, and she didn’t think it was fair to immediately thrust him into the engagement that had previously fallen through. She explained that the waiting period was to allow her grandson some time to heal and adjust, so he wouldn’t feel
CHAPTER FOURTEENISHAY ARCANWAY(Four months ago)“Oh my goodness, anak!” Her eyes widened as she stared at my face, particularly at my hair, which now only reached my neck, compared to how it used to fall halfway down my back. “Bakit ka nagpagupit? Alam ba ng manager mo ‘yan?” She even circled behind me to inspect how it looked from the back.“Yes, Mom. Actually, ayoko sana. But it was my manager who said I needed to cut it for my new project,” I explained.“Nag-mature ka tingnan. Pero kaunti lang naman.”“It’s fine. Honestly, long hair can be a hassle. It takes forever to fix. Tahimik.Bahagya siyang napabuntonghininga. “He’s in his study.”Kumunot ang noo ko.
It was Saturday, our usual family dinner, and this time, we were at a well-known restaurant. Everyone was there—my twin brothers and their wives, Summer, Tita Baby, Mom, Dad, Mommyla and Daddylo.“Pinagbigyan ka namin noong una,” she continued, “dahil akala namin magiging masaya ka sa babaeng ‘yon. That says only one thing, Love Andrei—that the two of you were never meant to be. At naniniwala ako na nangyari ang bagay na ‘yon para matuloy ang kasal mo kay Ishay—sa babaeng ini-match talaga sa ‘yo ni Don Adolfo.”Summer nodded in agreement, adding fuel to the fire. “I think so too, Mommyla. We’re on the same page.”Focus sa ‘kin ang usapan kahit na abala kaming lahat sa pagkain. Everyone seemed t
The car ride to her apartment was suffocatingly silent. I didn’t say a word to her from the moment we left the restaurant to the second my car stopped in front of her building. The frustration, disappointment, and anger bubbling inside me were too overwhelming. The occasional sound of her sniffles gave her away, even though she tried so hard to hold it in.“Sorry, Love,” she murmured, her voice barely audible, yet it still managed to pierce right through me.Humigpit ang hawak ko sa manibela habang deretso ang ting
I wanted to surprise Aria, so I went up the stairs on my own, leaving the bouquet I brought for her in the car for later. When I reached her door, I knocked. A few seconds passed before she opened it, and the look on her face told me I’d caught her completely off guard.“Hi, love,” I greeted her with a smile.“L-Love… bakit… bakit ang aga mo?” she stammered. It was as if she didn’t want me to come in.I

Why didn’t she attend my class? She hadn’t texted or called to inform me. That wasn’t like her. Aria never missed class without a good reason, especially mine.Does she have a problem? The thought unsettled me, distracting me from the task at hand. I couldn’t shake off the nagging worry as I moved on with the attendance, my gaze flicking back to her empty chair more times than I’d like to admit.Bigla akong nag-alala dahil nitong nakaraang linggo matapos ang pagtan
