I glanced at Leo, waiting for his reply. And as I stared at him, I couldn’t help but look down at his lips and recalled his sweet kiss.

My heart pounded at the thought.

So, I took a deep breath as I averted my eyes from him and focused on the food on my plate.

Then I heard him clear his throat.

“Our family is like the world’s tallest mountain. Not everyone can reach the top," he replied figuratively.

I arched my brow as I wondered the meaning of his statement. And as I contemplated I slowly realized that my suspicions before were both right and wrong.

From the luxury brand of his suit to his grand villa. He could afford all of those not because of his hard-earned money but because he was really rich, contrary to what Angela told me.

“So, how wealthy are you?” I queried as I got interested if he would dare to tell me.

“If you can count the stars, you’ll know the answer to your question.” He declared before he took the glass of water and drank it.

I couldn’t manage to reply as I was stunned by his answer. I didn't expect him to be straightforward about it. And if he compared their wealth to the stars, it only means that it was boundless.

‘He’s not too arrogant, is he?’ I smirked at myself as I continued eating.

Subsequently, Sarah spoke while she was sitting in the seat next to me, “That’s why it's hard to be part of our family, Angela. Since there are several frauds and opportunists nowadays, we made our family profile confidential.”

I suddenly choked when I heard the word ‘frauds’.

‘Is she referring to me?’ I anxiously asked myself as I felt guilty about being a fraud.

Leo immediately handed me a glass of water.

While Sarah gently caressed my back and inquired in a concerned tone, “Are you okay?”

I drank all the water in the glass. Then, I cleared my throat before I replied, “Yes, Auntie.”

“Angela, I just told you earlier to call me Mom from now on,” Sarah insisted.

“Alright, M-mom,” I agreed as I smiled timidly even though I really didn’t want to call her that way.

“Good. Finish your meal. Our visitors are waiting for you.” She stated.

My forehead creased as I asked, “ Waiting for me?”

I wondered why they would wait for me as they already introduced me earlier. Then, I glanced at Leo with a questioning look.

“Yes, because I’m going to personally introduce you to them.” Sarah clarified.

“Is it necessary?” I questioned as I got nervous.

Sarah chuckled, “Of course! You’re now a part of our family. Don’t worry, it’s only a simple meet and greet.”

After I finished eating, I excused myself to go to the restroom. I wasn’t prepared for this event. Hence, I couldn’t help but be worried.

Sarah showed me the way to the restroom before I stood up from my seat. Afterward, I made my way through the opulent halls of the luxurious villa.

Following the guidance of a discreetly placed sign, I was impressed to discover a lavishly decorated corridor that led to the restroom. The walls were embellished with exquisite artwork and framed mirrors.

“Wow,” I uttered as I admired the spectacular appearance of the restroom. I forgot for a while the tension I was feeling earlier.

Afterward, I took a moment to stare at my reflection in the mirror. I asked myself if I could still continue pretending.

This welcome party only brought guilt to my heart. I thought that the more I got attached to their family, the more guilty I would feel because of my pretension.

Subsequently, I thought of calling Angela to tell her what I just discovered and to ask her if she could return as soon as possible as I could no longer do this.

However, my call wouldn’t connect. I only received an intercept message from the operator saying that the number I dialed was out of reach.

Nevertheless, I kept on trying. I still attempted to call her five more times. Only to give up in the end.

And since my call wouldn’t connect, I decided to message her instead.

'Anj, how are you? I hope everything is fine with you. And I hope you come back sooner because I can’t do this anymore. I'm afraid they might find out that I'm just pretending. And do you know what I just learned? Leonardo’s family is not just an ordinary family. They are crazy rich people, the opposite of what you told me. So please, return soon.'

I let out a heavy sigh after my message was sent. I was hoping that she would receive it and come back before it was too late.

I let out another sigh before I made my way toward the exit of the restroom.

As I walked back to the garden, I realized that Angela wasn't aware of the social status of Leo's family because as Sarah mentioned they made their family profile confidential.

Still lost in my thoughts, I rounded a corner, inadvertently colliding with a tall figure. I raised my head to see the face of the man.

“I’m sorry,” the man apologized as he extended his hand to steady me. Then he added, “I should have watched where I was going.”

I was momentarily taken aback by the unanticipated encounter. Nevertheless, I quickly composed myself.

I smiled modestly as I replied, “You don't need to apologize. I was the one who wasn’t looking. I’m so sorry.”

A warm smile graced his lips as he uttered while extending his right hand, “No worries. By the way, I’m Jake.”

I couldn’t deny that the man was stunning, wearing a tailored suit that exuded sophistication, especially when he smiled at me.

“I’m A-Angela,” I responded as I accepted his hand.

Haist. I almost blurted out my real name.

“Yeah, I witnessed when you were introduced by the host earlier.” He explained, still holding my hand. Then he continued as he stared intently at me, “Anyway, nice name. It suits your angelic face.”

Feeling uneasy by his gaze, I immediately withdrew my hand. And as I was about to reply we were interrupted by the sound of a door opening nearby.

We turned our heads and saw that it was Leo. I didn’t know but his presence made me feel relieved.

“Darling, what took you so long?” He asked lovingly which made me raise my brow.

‘Since when did he become sweet? And why was he calling me darling?’ I whispered at the back of my mind.

“It’s been a while, Jake,” Leo stated plainly as soon as he came near us. Then, he grabbed me by my waist and pulled me closer to him. Another surprising gesture from him. “Right. It’s been a while,” Jake responded with a thin smile and patted Leo on his arm. Then, he glanced again at me. “So, when did you return?” Leo asked. I didn’t know but I could feel the tension between the two of them in the way they converse. Jake’s smile widened. “I just came back yesterday. You know, when I received the invitation from your mom, I didn’t hesitate to come. Anyway, congratulations.” He said, throwing me a quick look before his eyes darted again at Leo. Consequently, I felt uncomfortable with his gaze so I looked away. “I see,” Leo uttered, looking down at me. Then, he cleared his throat before he added, “So, we have to go. Everyone outside is waiting for my wife.” I suddenly raised my head at Leo as he emphasized the words ‘my wife’. I couldn’t understand but it brought a fluttery sens

I woke up to the gentle touch of a cool damp cloth on my burning face. “Hmm…” I moaned without opening my eyes as I was still feeling dizzy. “What came to your mind and you drank too much alcohol?” I heard Leo mutter angrily. So, I tried to open my eyes. And I was right. It was not my imagination. It was him. I found him sitting beside the bed while staring down at me. But my head was still spinning. Hence, I clutched the edge of the mattress, trying to steady myself. Still disoriented, I smiled as I asked innocently in a slurred speech. “W-What al-alcohol?” Then, I closed my eyes again, wishing my wooziness would subside. “So, you don’t remember what you did?” He questioned as he continued wiping my face with a damp cloth. “O-of course, I re-remember! I remember everything.” I responded boldly. “If you really remember anything, what happened earlier?” “You k-kissed me earlier, didn’t you?” I told him the only thing I remembered at the moment as I held his hand, stopping h

As I picked up my phone, I got disappointed as the caller was not Angela. So, letting out a deep sigh, I pressed the answer button. “Hello, Mom?” I mumbled. Then, I bit my lower lip as I recalled what happened yesterday at the event. Good thing, there were no more visitors when I passed out. ‘What a shame!’ I thought as I felt embarrassed about what I did. “Angela, how do you feel today?” Sarah asked worriedly on the other end of the line. “I’m okay, mom. I’m sorry about yesterday. I didn’t mean to–” I apologized but I was not able to finish my words as Sarah cut me off. “No, dear. You don’t have to say sorry.” She countered. “But mom–” I would insist but again, she didn’t let me finish my words. “It was me who should apologize, Angela. I supposed you were shocked and anxious about the honeymoon thing. That’s why you drank a lot. So, I’m sorry, if we haven’t informed you about it.” I was not able to respond right away as I was surprised that she guessed it right. More than tha

I was greatly appalled when I saw Jake. I did not expect that I was going to meet him again. Yes, it was him. He was the driver of Sarah. He did not look like a family driver though. ‘What’s his relation to the King’s family?’ I asked in my mind as I walked towards the car. He had a bright grin on his face as he opened the car door for me. But I felt a sudden urge to back out as his presence made me feel uneasy. Nonetheless, I was aware that he might suspect me of avoiding him. Thus, I acted as though his presence didn't bother me at all, trying to appear relaxed. I released a deep breath and then put on a pleasant expression on my face before getting into the car. However, I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable due to the pain in my thighs. I just hoped that it didn’t reflect on my face. But just like when I climbed the stairs earlier, my legs slightly trembled as I hopped into the car that I almost fell. My heart raced while my face flushed red. I bit off my lips in order t

Hearing Jake’s remark, I almost spat out the coffee in my mouth. Confirmed! He was still thinking about Angela. But this time, he believed that I was not her. Good thing, Sarah wasn’t here yet. She didn’t hear what he just said. I swallowed hard before I responded with an annoying chuckle, “What do you mean that I am not Angela?” Then, I gently put down my coffee on the table as I waited for his reply. “I mean, you’re not the Angela that I met in Spain.” He declared as he leaned back on the couch. “Well, I already told you yesterday that I had never met you before,” I stated as I smiled. I felt at ease now. Finally, he was convinced that we never met before. However, I noticed when he clenched his jaw while his brows lowered. “Then, who are you? You’re not the real Angela. But why do you look like her?” He questioned grimly. My heart skipped a beat. ‘I thought we were already settled. But what was he saying now?’ I whispered in my mind. Nevertheless, I composed myself, th

Leo still didn’t listen to me. And to my surprise, he didn’t take the stairs anymore. Instead, he walked straight toward the direction of the elevator. Then, we entered the lift as soon as it opened. My brows furrowed as he seemed to have no plans to put me down. “Can you put me down on the floor now?” I exclaimed as I frowned after he pressed the close button of the elevator. “Sure,” He said with a meaningful smile on his lips. Then, he quickly kneeled and laid me down on the floor. My eyes bulged while my mouth fell open. I couldn’t believe what he just did! And as soon as I recovered from the shock, I swiftly got up, beat the dust off my clothes, and confronted him. “Hey–” But I could not continue what I was going to say as the elevator door opened. Then I saw three people waiting outside the lift. Leo gave me an annoying smirk before he walked outside the lift. I could feel my face flushed red in irritation as I could not say anything, and I could not do anything but pout

My eyes bulged slightly as I stared intently at the tall, blonde-haired man with blue eyes approaching us. ‘He’s the man in the picture that Angela showed me!’ My mind shouted. “You’re right, but he doesn’t know,” Leo confirmed in a low voice as though he had read what was on my mind. Then, as soon as the man came near, he tapped Leo on his shoulder as they greeted each other. “Happy birthday, bro,” Leo stated. “Thanks. But I thought you were on a honeymoon?” The man asked, crossing his arms. Leo smiled thinly as he gave me a quick glance before he answered, “Well, change of plans.” The man chuckled while shaking his head. “I can't believe you. Anyway, won't you introduce me to the beautiful woman next to you?” He queried, peeking at me. “Right,” Leo agreed as he put his left hand on my shoulder before he added, “Meet my wife, Angela. Angela, this is my best friend, Daniel.” “Nice to finally meet you, Angela." Daniel expressed, extending his right hand before he continued, "I

My brows furrowed as I looked at Stella’s reflection in the mirror. “How did I flirt with him?” I repeated, greatly appalled by her question. “Yes. You flirted with him, that's why he married you, didn’t you? Because if not, I’m very sure that he would not marry you. Look at yourself and look at how you’re dressed. Eww!” She emphasized with a scowl, scanning my outfit from head to toe. I could feel my blood shoot up in my head, disgusted by her statement because she was right since I was only wearing a loose white shirt and skinny jeans. I assumed she was not aware of the arranged marriage. Sigh. If only I could tell her the real story. But since she insulted me, I would give her what she wanted. “Look who’s talking? Aren’t you the one who’s flirting with him just a while ago? Well, I pity you that even if you look stunning, he still chose me to become his wife,” I countered with a sarcastic smirk. I could see in the mirror how Stella’s expression changed from mocking to furious

The thought that Jake might notice my deception, filled me with dread. Hence, I decided to run upstairs. I heard Angela calling me twice, but I didn’t dare to look back, completely ignoring my twin sister’s call. I gasped for air as I finally reached the guest room, my back leaned against the door, and my heart was pounding like a relentless drum in my chest. The sudden arrival of Sarah and Jake had caught me off guard, leaving me entirely unprepared to face them. And as I caught my breath, I couldn't help but question myself. Why had pretending to be someone else felt easier than now when I had to face them as my true self? Then, I realized that I really didn’t pretend to be someone else. I just used my twin sister’s name. But everything that I showed them was real. My personality and feelings towards them were all real. That’s why it was so difficult for me now to face them and make a different impression of me. I released a deep sigh. After a while, I decided to send a messag

My heart pounded in my chest as Leo’s scrutinizing gaze lingered on me, his jaw clenched in anticipation of my reply. Indeed, my twin sister had transformed as though she was now a completely different person. And that realization hurt me deeply. ‘Can a head surgery really alter someone’s personality?’ I wondered silently. Then, I nervously wiped my mouth with the table napkin as I contemplated how to respond to her statement. For a moment, I hesitated about denying her words. Despite everything, she was still my twin, and I held love and respect for her. Choosing to give way and let go of my feelings for Leo was a decision made out of that love. However, I was not martyr enough to let her tarnish my reputation with lies. Putting down the table napkin, a thin smile graced my lips as I prepared to reply. "I'm sorry, Anj. But I couldn't recall. And why would you text me that fact as if we had a good relationship before? Didn't you mention earlier that I was yet to accept you as my

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S RUNAWAY FAKE WIFE   Chapter 37: The Reason

I really wanted to ask Angela if she could leave and let things be as they were, with me as Leo’s wife. I believed she could repay me that way. However, I was fully aware that she would not agree. Moreover, just like what she told me before, I didn’t wish to become her rival as well. Thus, I decided to give way, acknowledging that I had no rightful claim in the first place. And I confirmed her displeasure when I witnessed her expression darkening upon hearing my words. It was evident in her eyes that she didn’t like what I said. Since her return, I noticed a significant change in her. She was no longer the gentle and sweet Angela I once knew. Aside from taking back her real identity, she set clear boundaries between us, emphasizing that my role was merely a substitute, without any regard for my feelings as her twin. "What did you say?" She asked bitterly while crossing her arms and raising her brow. "I said, I would like to leave, Angela. Maybe tomorrow," I repeated, amending my w

Angela and I were sitting on the plush couch in the living room, our anticipation heightening with each passing moment as we awaited Leo's entrance. This time, however, I was the one wearing the wavy, long wig and eyeglasses. Yes, it was the moment when Angela and I exchanged identities, restoring everything to its rightful place. As I sat there, I drew in a deep breath, mentally preparing for the upcoming encounter with Leo, where I would meet him for the first time as the real me–no longer Angela, but Ashley. The suspense in the room peaked when Leo finally stepped through the doorway. I could feel the atmosphere charged with tension as his gaze shifted between Angela and me. And as Leo's eyes met mine, a flicker of astonishment danced across his face. The seconds that passed between Leo's entrance and the interactions that followed seemed like an eternity, each tick of the clock resonating with heightened anticipation. With a mixture of nervousness and curiosity, I couldn't br

I made the decision to confess everything to my twin sister, believing in the strength of our bond and hoping for her understanding of my complex situation. I was silently hoping that she would understand, especially considering the tiny life growing within me. However, just as I was about to begin sharing, her attention shifted to the necklace adorning my neck. "Wait, Ash. Your necklace looks beautiful. Is that the one Leo gave you on your second month together?" Angela asked cheerfully, holding the pendant and gazing at me with anticipation. "Hmm… Yeah," I reluctantly confirmed. With no one else to share my feelings with, sending short messages to Angela became my hobby, updating her on my excitement and disappointments, thus finding a release for the emotions that overwhelmed me. Angela's radiant smile widened, and she eagerly made a request that caught me off guard, "Can you put the necklace on me?" "Huh?" I mumbled, my heart quickening its pace as a wave of emotions surged t

I stared at my phone, my mind unable to process the name that had unexpectedly appeared on the screen. ‘Impossible,’ I muttered to myself, furrowing my brows as I continued to gaze at the screen. Shortly thereafter, my phone chimed again, abruptly pulling me from my daze. Suddenly, a wave of goosebumps rippled across my body as I read the sender's name on my screen. "A-Angela?" I stammered in disbelief, my voice barely audible. It was a message from my twin sister, and the sheer surprise left me speechless. I couldn't believe that I received a text message from her. With trembling hands and a heart pounding like a drum, I pressed the screen to reveal the message. My hands continued to tremble as I read the message. ‘Ash, surprise? I just arrived here in Southland. Let’s meet. I miss you so much!’ I stood frozen in my spot feeling as though a bucket of ice-cold water had been poured over me. "How is this possible?" I questioned myself as a paralyzing shock surged through me.

"Is Mr. Scott's claim true, Angela?" Grandpa queried coldly, his gaze fixed on me, intensifying the gravity of the moment. The room fell into a heavy silence as everyone turned their attention toward me, waiting for my response. I cleared my throat, preparing to reply, but before I could speak, Aunt Ofelia abruptly interjected, her tone accusatory and skeptical. "Dad, why are you even asking Angela? Do you think she would agree with what Mr. Scott says? I mean, no one in their right mind would admit to such a shameless act," she remarked, her words laced with insinuation, clearly aimed at undermining my credibility. “I did nothing, Auntie,” I responded fearlessly, my frown reflecting my resistance. Aunt Ofelia's subtle insinuations continued, "Oh, I didn't say anything, Angela. But I do wonder, what were you doing in Mr. Scott’s room?” I clenched my fists as frustration and anger welled up within me, sensing Aunt Ofelia's attempt to discredit me and strengthen Mr. Scott's false

"Where do you think you're going, my special present?" Mr. Scott inquired, his tone sending shivers down my spine. “What do you mean by 'special present'?” I asked anxiously, struggling to understand his disturbing words. “Do you think I would easily agree to marry my daughter off to that orphan without receiving something in return? Of course not. It's because, in every agreement, there’s a hidden endowment. And I must confess, I'm delighted that it turned out to be you," he divulged with a malicious glint in his eyes. I was stunned upon hearing his statement, a sinking feeling gnawing at my gut. Nonetheless, I kept my composure and looked at him straightly in his eyes. "I have no idea what you're talking about. So please, just let me leave," I uttered firmly, my voice unwavering. But he continued as though he didn’t hear what I said, "You know, I couldn't help but admire you earlier during dinner because your beauty has this captivating innocence," he stated, his gaze sweeping

As time passed, I couldn't help but wonder why Leo hadn't mentioned anything about Aunt Ofelia and Bernadette's false accusation. The weight of their allegations still lingered in my mind, so I decided to visit Leo in his library, where he often worked. "Leo," I called out as I knocked gently on the door. "Come in," his voice replied. Upon entering his library, I found him seated in his swivel chair, engrossed in his work on his laptop, wearing a pair of eyeglasses. When he noticed me, he removed his glasses and swiveled his chair to the side. "Sit here," he invited, extending his arms toward his lap. I walked over and settled on his lap, seeking comfort and closeness. He inquired with a grin, "Do you need anything?" "About Aunt Ofelia and Bernadette," I began, a slight crease forming on my forehead. “What about them?” He asked, his forehead furrowed. “Did they call you already?” Puzzled, I asked, "Why would they call me?" "Well, I talked to them last night," Leo explained. "
