Brenda's POV
The living room brimmed with friends who had turned up for Ralph's birthday party, the clinking of glasses, hearty chatter, and background music adding to the liveliness. From cutting the cake to making a toast, as a good girlfriend should be, I was right beside him through the whole process. It was a happy moment and I was supposed to be happy and totally unbothered. Well, I was happy—for him at least. But despite the happy atmosphere, I couldn't help the unusual clumsiness that descended on me tonight. I grabbed a drink and started refilling my cup. I was staring into vacancy, but the subconscious part of me noticed the silence that suddenly ensued at the table. Everyone was looking at me like I were some alien now, and I didn't realize what I was doing wrong until Ralph's voice cut through the silence like a sharp knife. “Babe! What are you doing? The cup is full.” Only then did I realize that I had been pouring the drink absentmindedly. It had filled to the brim, and now the cup was running over. At first, I was thunderstruck. “I'm so sorry,” I later managed, feeling like a weirdo. But my apology did nothing to stop me from being in the spotlight. With the scrutinizing gaze on each person at the table, I felt like a deer caught in the headlights. Could my worries get any more obvious? Suddenly, the DJ switched up the music to a fast danceable one and Ralph shot to his feet, snaking his arm around my waist to pull me closer to him. “Ladies and gents, have all the fun that you can have tonight,” he said before gently dragging me with him to the dance floor. Finally, a rescue from the awkwardness that threatened to consume me. Ralph had my fingers entwined in his as we moved in synchronism to the rhythm of the music. Ralph knew how much music exhilarates me. He knew how much of a good dancer I was. But he figured I wasn't in my spirit tonight. As he locked his gaze on mine, his scrutinizing gaze didn't fail to catch how unsettled I was. You look worried, Brenda,” Ralph finally spoke up. I shook my head to refute but Ralph wasn't convinced, so he pressed further. “Don't lie to me, Brenda. I know there's Something wrong. You've been looking at your phone at intervals. You're making me feel like I forced you down here.” “Aren't you happy to be here with me tonight?” he asked again, his gaze still locked to mine. “Of course I am Lucian,” I managed a smile. “And I'm fine, you don't need to worry about me,” I added. But I lied. How do I remind Ralph that his constant pressures for me to be at his party made me sneak out on my sick father after he took his pills and slept? How do I explain to Ralph that I just had to turn up shortly because he'll not understand whatever reason I gave for not coming. He had always expressed his utter disappointment at my unavailability recently even when I had explained to him that my dad was sick and I was taking care of him. Despite that bad side of Ralph, I still loved him regardless. “Ralph, I won't stay too long tonight,” I managed. “Alright babe,” he said, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. Since you won't be here for long, let's make tonight memorable. Before I could open my mouth to reply, he playfully dragged me along with him and we got to his bedroom. Once the door was shut, Ralph didn't waste time. He pressed his lips to mine and we kissed. At first, it was a light kiss, but as Ralph deepened the kiss, I couldn't tell if it was borne out of his intoxication or the true love he had for more. I reckoned it was both reasons so I allowed the kiss to crescendo with every passing second. Ralph made sure to savor every inch of my mouth. Our tongues seemingly continued the dance that we didn't wait to finish as they swept against each other. After some time, we pulled away to breath. I took a glance at the time on my phone and I knew I had to start going, but Ralph held my hand. As I looked into his eyes, the dissatisfaction they reflected was palpable even under the dim light. For a moment, I thought I heard a faint sound somewhere in the room. “Are we alone, Ralph?” “Of course, who else would be in the room with us?” Ralph said and I concluded that I must have misheard. Before I knew what was happening, Ralph slid his right hand under my gown. His fingers slowly crawled all the way up and I already knew where they were going. His touch was already sending sparks throughout my body, but I suddenly held his hand to stop him before he could go further. “Please stop! I'm not ready for this.” As I said that, I noticed a sudden change in his demeanor. “You keep saying this,” he blurted out of frustration. “When will you ever be ready, Brenda?” I froze at his sudden outburst. I didn't even know what to say to him. “How long do you intend to carry on, being a virgin?” He barked, and the next thing I knew, tears welled up in my eyes. The moment I started sobbing, Ralph held my hands tenderly again, his demeanor back to normal. “I'm so sorry Brenda. You know I hate to see you cry.” “Don't worry, it's fine if you don't want us to…” I didn't let him finish before I cut in. “You can have me, Ralph. I'm all yours” His eyes dilated in surprise even as they carried a shadow of lust. “Are you sure Lila?” I didn't say a word at first. Instead, I leaned in and placed a brief kiss on his lips. “Anything for you, Ralph,” I finally told him. “We've been together for long and I think it's time I let you in. But be gentle with me, please. It's my first time.” The next minute, Ralph and I engaged in another passionate kiss. It was as though our lives depended on it. Shortly after we pulled away to breath, Ralph's hand worked its way beneath my thighs again, making it obvious that he had been starved. For a moment, I forgot that I was in a hurry to go back home to meet my dad before he woke up. I could feel the wetness down there already. As Ralph's hand continued to send sparks throughout my body, I threw all of my cautions out the window as Ralph's fingers had now found the hem of my panties. He paused, and we locked gaze briefly, a silent acknowledgment of what was coming. He started this. Now my body and soul were waiting for him to finish what he started. Just as he was about to shift the hem of my panties, my phone buzzed. Seeing ‘Dad’ appear on my phone screen, realization crashed down on me that my dad was awake. Crestfallen, Ralph slumped back unto the bed while I sat upright to answer the call with a trembling hand. “Hello, Dad,’’ my heart was pounding in my chest as I spoke. I expected that he would express his disappointment for leaving home without telling him. But his next words were far from disappointed. “Brenda, it's not safe to come home now. Just stay wherever you are for now,” he said in a rush, and the call ended before I could say anything. Cufusion skated my expression as I tried his number again but it didn't go through. Now, my heart was beating twice its normal rate as I sensed danger in that tone. “I have to go now,” I said to Ralph as I shot up to my feet and dashed out in a frenzy, ignoring Ralph's confused responses. I was about to flag down a car when I tried to reach for my phone in my small purse and then I realized that I had left my phone In Ralph's room. My hurriedness did not even make me process for a second, the kind of noise or pleasure-coated sound that I was hearing. By the time I swung the door open, I could not believe the sight before me. I found Ralph lying stark naked above someone else on the bed. He quickly got off the person as soon as he saw me. Only then was the person's face revealed. Wait a minute, a man? Ralph wasn't even cheating on me with a woman. It was a fucking man!Brenda's POVI sat in the cab and watched the cab driver speed up as I had instructed, my mind a swirling tempest of disappointment, rage, and fear.My eyes stung with the unshed tears I was making so much effort not to let out. I couldn't bring myself to bawl my eyes out and make the driver look at me as though I were a baby who just lost her candy. The more I tried to get Ralph's betrayal off my mind and focus on getting to Dad early, the more my mind drifted to that annoying scene. “Brenda, wait. It's not what you think.”Those were the words that came out of that bastard’s mouth when I grabbed my phone and stormed out of his room.To think he was bi-asexual in the first place and that he was still telling me that it wasn't what I thought despite what I saw, he must've taken me for a complete fool. There was absolutely no amount of explanation that would justify his action or make me disbelieve what I saw back there. My heart seemed to clench at the thought that I almost allowe
Brenda's POV I had just survived a ghastly car accident, though I couldn’t decide if it was a blessing or just life prolonging my torment. The driver, intoxicated and speeding, lost the cop chasing us, but the car tumbled twice. I escaped with minor scratches, but the two men in the car were covered in blood. I didn’t even check if they were alive—I couldn't afford the cop to catch up with me.I crawled out of the overturned car and sprinted into an alley, stopping only when I saw the gate of a mansion opening for a luxurious vehicle. Hearing the police siren growing louder, I slipped into the compound unnoticed behind the car.I hid in the shadows and watched as a man with an aura of authority stepped out. Suddenly, he turned in my direction and barked, “Step outside now!”Trembling, I emerged with my hands raised. His stern voice demanded, “Who are you, and what are you doing here?” At first, I didn't know where to start, but with another shout from him, I nervously explained
Brenda's POV The moment Vanessa stopped her dad from calling the police on me, albeit I felt a pang of relief, I knew she was up to something.“Are you sure you don't want me to report her to the police?” Mr. Grayson asked, his face mirroring the surprised look of his wife. “Yes father, I will teach her a lesson myself. Trust me to handle her.” Vanessa replied. Vanessa's smirk was enough to tell that she was trying to frame me for something I didn't do. But just as I had expected, her parents pretended they didn't see it. They were birds of the same feathers, after all, so I shouldn't expect less cruelty from them. Her mum looked unsatisfied. “And what penance do you intend to give to her which she won't get in the police custody?”“First, she can't leave this house until she pays for this expensive glass cup that she broke,’’ the spoiled brat answered.“I didn't didn't break that, you...” I tried to protest, but a sudden resounding slap across my face killed the last word left f
Lucian's POVWhen my gaze met Vanessa's, I didn't know what to make of the anger and jealousy that I saw in her eyes. For a moment, I wondered when Vanessa started getting jealous, seeing me with other women. I would have sworn that she was just up to her usual shenanigans, but I was flabbergasted at how that anger and jealousy in her eyes looked so real. After embracing the hell out of me earlier, she had left me briefly to say hello to another man who she must have known from somewhere else.Vanessa and I were just friends, so I didn't see anything wrong with that. I didn't even feel a pang of jealousy as she smiled before the man, who was also wearing a small mask. My parents had not only been pressuring me to get married soon. Like I was a fool who couldn't make decisions for himself, they had decided that I'd get married to Vanessa.I had always considered their resolve and determination a silly joke that was worth laughing over. First, I wasn't ready to get married. Second,
Lucian's POVFor a moment, Vanessa and I stood frozen, our gazes locked on each other. She wasn't standing fully upright yet, and I could feel her heartbeat going wild against her ribcage as I held her.We had never found ourselves in such proximity before, and if I wasn't just as shocked as she was, I would have wondered why she chose to remain in that uncomfortable posture rather than helping herself stand fully upright. Her breath was still fanning my face, and our lips remained so close when it clicked in my head again that we were the center of attention.Just when I was about to help Vanessa stand fully upright, her voice stopped me.“Lucian,” she swallowed. Before I could respond, three powerful words escaped her mouth:“I love you!”Those words rolled out of her mouth with such momentum that I failed to catch them until she repeated herself even more clearly.“I love you, Lucian! I always have.”Yet again, her words held me spellbound, and as if that wasn't enough, she closed
Brenda's POV"No, please! Don't do this to me," I cried out bitterly as the water dripping from my hair to my face did nothing to stop me from sweating profusely, still as a result of my struggles. My face had been intermittently dipped into an enormous bucket of water for minutes, and every round of the cruel torture felt like the last moments of my life.I didn't know how I managed to survive the last four rounds. Now that the torture was about to be repeated, I felt like it could be the last one. I might not be able to hold my breath for too long and finally suffocate to death."I didn't do it, I swear. Please let me go!" I pleaded, squirming to free myself from the chair I was tied to.But all my pleas were futile because, once again, my head was dipped into the pool of water, and I was desperately fighting for my life.Suddenly, I jolted to life to see that I hadn't only been having a nightmare, but Vanessa had also been right in front of me, pouring water on my face to wake me u
Lucian's POVAfter stirring tiredly on my bed a few times, my eyes fluttered open. Before I could glance at the time, the streaks of sunlight filtering through the cotton drapes were the first thing that caught my attention, making me fear that I had overslept.“Shit,” I cursed when I glanced at my clock, which read 8:30 a.m.—a confirmation that I was late for work.As the CEO, no one would dare to question me for my tardiness, but I had trained myself to always get to work on time. Then, just before I could clamber out of bed, realization dawned on me—it was Saturday. I didn’t go to work on weekends.A breath of relief escaped my lips, but it was short-lived. As soon as my mind registered the day, memories from last night, which stress had buried deep, started flooding back into my head like the waves of the ocean. No wonder I slept in. I barely got any sleep last night.I let out a frustrated sigh and raked a hand through my hair. Why the hell do I feel so restless?Since I left th
Lucian’s POVThe moment Vanessa’s eyes landed on us, Brenda mumbled a quick excuse and slipped away, vanishing down the hallway before I could utter a word.I watched her retreating figure for a split second before turning my attention back to Vanessa. She stood rigid, her arms loosely crossed, her expression carefully blank. But I knew Vanessa too well to be fooled by her composed exterior. The slight twitch at the corner of her jaw, the way her fingers clenched slightly before relaxing—it all screamed tension.A strange sense of unease crawled up my spine. Was she mad? Jealous? Still upset about last night?I parted my lips, but no words came out. I felt uncertain about what to say. It wasn’t like I had done anything wrong, but something told me that in Vanessa’s eyes, my interaction with her new maid had meant something. When I finally took a step toward her, I half-expected her to do what she did last night—cling onto me, flash that teasing smirk, throw a flirty remark my way.Bu
Lucian’s POVI was still seething as I stared at Brenda Anger coursed through my veins like fire, burning hotter with every second.I had defended Brenda. Trusted her. Opened myself up to love her.And yet. The headlines. The pictures. The proximity and the kiss with that guy. Damn it!The betrayal hit harder than I ever could have imagined.I didn’t know if I was angrier at her or at myself for believing in her in the first place. But then, something changed.Right in front of me, Brenda’s entire demeanor shifted. She had been trying to plead her case—trying to get me to listen—but when her phone buzzed, she glanced at it, and suddenly…She wasn’t crying anymore. She wasn’t defensive anymore. She wasn’t saying anything anymore.Instead, her face drained of color, her fingers clutching her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned white. And then, she ran.Again.Just like she had the other day.She bolted past me so fast I barely had time to react. For a moment, I just stood there,
Brenda's POVThe entire house was silent, wrapped in a darkness so thick it felt suffocating. The only sound was the soft rhythm of Lucian’s steady breathing beside me.He was asleep. Peaceful. Unbothered.Unlike me.I lay there, staring into space, my body exhausted but my mind unwilling to rest.Sleep had abandoned me the moment I closed my eyes. Too much had happened today. Too much to process, too much to forget.Vanessa’s unexpected arrival.Chairman Kingsley’s blatant favoritism. The argument between father and son, a battle of power and authority that I found myself stuck in the middle of.The accountant.Mrs. Vivian.Their dirty hands siphoning the charity funds meant for the less privileged. And then—Ralph. The audacity of him. The way he had forced himself back into my life as if he had a right. The way he had—My fingers curled into the sheets at the memory of how he kissed me.It was overwhelming. This family was drowning in secrets.Dangerous, destructive secrets. And Luc
Brenda's POV By the time closing hour finally rolled around, I felt like I had been wrung dry.Chairman Kingsley hadn’t lingered long after his spat with Lucian that morning, but Vanessa had made it her mission to remind me exactly who held the power at work today.All. Damn. Day.She had me running back and forth, calling me into her office for the most trivial, pointless tasks—reviewing reports that had already been approved, fetching documents that weren’t even necessary, nitpicking over work I had already done perfectly. It was all a show. A game. And I let it slide.I answered her every time, didn’t argue, didn’t give her the satisfaction of a reaction. She wanted me to break. She wanted to see cracks. But I refused to let her win.Still, as I sat at my desk, gathering my things, I could feel the exhaustion pressing down on me, not just physically but mentally. It was almost exactly like before, back when I lived under her roof—back when she controlled every aspect of my life, t
Brenda's POV The moment I laid eyes on Vanessa standing in my office doorway, a surge of disbelief shot through me.Lucian had made it very clear that she was no longer welcome here, and yet, here she was, standing in front of me like she owned the place. She was smiling. Not a friendly smile, but one filled with arrogance, as if she wanted me to know she was untouchable, that she could do whatever she wanted, no matter what Lucian said.I felt my fingers curl into fists at my sides."You shouldn’t be here," I said, keeping my voice steady.Vanessa chuckled, tilting her head. "Oh, Brenda," she murmured. "You didn’t really think I’d just disappear, did you?"I opened my mouth to reply, but before I could, a deep, furious voice thundered from behind me."What the hell are you doing here?"Lucian. His voice was thick with rage, and my entire body tensed.I turned just in time to see him storming toward us, his movements sharp, his expression deadly. His icy blue eyes were locked onto Va
Lucian's POV The murmurs swelled, a storm of whispers and gasps rippling through the hall, but I had no patience for them."Enough," I said, my voice sharp, cutting through the noise like a whip. The room stilled instantly, every pair of eyes locking onto me with wary anticipation. "There's been a mix-up." I didn't elaborate, nor did I feel the need to explain myself to my employees. They worked for me—I didn’t owe them anything beyond their paychecks."Go back to your duties." My tone left no room for argument. "Now."The exodus began, people slowly dispersing, though their curious gazes lingered on Brenda and me longer than I liked. I was about to walk Brenda out, eager to remove her from their scrutiny, when a voice sliced through the thinning crowd."Excuse me!"My eyes snapped up, a sigh already building in my chest before I even saw her. Vanessa. She stepped forward, cutting through the dispersing employees with an air of authority that made it clear she wasn’t about to be ign
Lucian's POV The morning sunlight poured through the glass windows of the company’s grand entrance as Brenda and I walked in, hand in hand. I held her firmly, not just as a show of support but as a silent message to everyone watching—we were a united front.Yet, despite the confidence I exuded, I could feel the tension in Brenda’s body the moment we stepped inside. The atmosphere was thick with hushed conversations, barely concealed snickers, and darting glances. Even though no one dared to speak outright when I was near, the whispers were unmistakable."Did you see the way she ran last night?""Barefoot, like some street beggar!""How embarrassing—"The moment my employees realized I was within earshot, their eyes widened, and their mouths snapped shut. Some gasped audibly, covering their lips with their hands as if that would somehow erase what they had just said. Others turned abruptly, pretending to be occupied with work they hadn’t been doing a second ago.I clenched my jaw but
Lucian’s POVThe door slammed shut behind Margot, leaving behind the sharp scent of her perfume and the bitter aftertaste of betrayal.I exhaled, forcing the anger in my chest to settle.Margot.For years, I had thought of her as a woman who, despite being my stepmother, had at least harbored some semblance of care for me and my father. But tonight, that illusion shattered. She had played us all.The affection, the kindness, the support—it had all been a carefully crafted performance. The moment she showed her true colors, demanding that I step down as CEO, I knew the love she claimed to have for us was nothing but a means to an end.She wanted power. She had never cared about me. Not as a son, not even as a person.I clenched my jaw and stepped out of my office. I needed air. More than that, I needed to see Brenda.I had left her to handle the charity team, but something in my gut told me to find her. I strode down the hallway, my mind still processing the depths of Margot’s deceit,
Brenda’s POVThe gala night was in full swing. The grand ballroom buzzed with energy as elegantly dressed guests mingled, their glasses filled with the finest champagne. Soft orchestral music drifted through the air, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. From the stage, a compere welcomed notable guests while waiters moved gracefully through the crowd, serving hors d'oeuvres on silver trays. As much as I wanted to stay by Lucian’s side tonight, we both had responsibilities to ensure the success of the event. While he was handling crucial business matters, I was preoccupied with my charity team, making sure everything was in place for the charity segment of the gala.Supervising the team was no small feat. The donations had to be organized, the presentation had to be flawless, and every guest who had pledged funds for the cause had to be acknowledged. My team bustled around the side of the hall, setting up the donation booth while I double-checked our list.Vanessa was surprisingly di
Brenda’s POVLucian’s fingers were warm as they curled around mine, his grip firm yet gentle, as if he never wanted to let go. We sat in the back seat of his sleek black car, the city lights casting a soft glow through the tinted glass. The hum of the engine and the distant chatter of pedestrians outside blended into a low, soothing murmur.I couldn’t stop smiling.Everything about this moment—about us—felt so surreal. Just weeks ago, my world had been nothing but uncertainty and struggle. And now? Now I was here, my fingers intertwined with Lucian’s, heading toward an evening gala as his wife.I turned slightly, my gaze trailing over his sharp, striking features. His jawline, defined and strong, his dark eyes focused ahead as he absentmindedly stroked my palm with his thumb. The smallest of gestures, but one that sent a warmth spiraling through my chest. As I looked back out the window, watching the city glide past us in a blur of neon and moonlight, my mind drifted back to the morni
