Brenda's POV

I stared at Lucian, my heart still pounding from the sheer shock of his words. Will you marry me?

It had sounded like a thunderclap in my ears, a ridiculous, earth-shattering thing that had no business coming from his mouth.

But just as I was trying to wrap my head around it, the unreadable expression he had been wearing shifted. His lips twitched, then curved upward, and before I knew it, a deep, rich chuckle rumbled from his chest.

"You should have seen your face," he said, shaking his head, amusement dancing in his ocean-blue eyes.

Relief flooded through me so fast I nearly melted into the pillows.

Of course, he was joking.

Of course, he was.

I let out a nervous laugh, shaking my head at myself for even thinking for a second that he meant what he said.

But suddenly, as if a switch had been flipped, Lucian’s smile vanished.

His face returned to that cold, unreadable mask, his eyes locking onto mine with unrelenting intensity.

"I'm dead serious."

Lucian’s POVAs I leaned back in my office chair, I let out a slow breath, my fingers tapping absently against the polished mahogany desk. The past few days had been a whirlwind of unexpected developments, but somehow, it all led back to one particular moment—Brenda’s ridiculous question.Did you see my butt?I let out an exasperated sigh at the memory. Even if I had, what was so special about it? I almost scoffed at the thought, but something in me resisted the dismissive attitude. If the situation had been reversed—if I had been the one in her position—perhaps I would have felt the same level of mortification.Still, that didn’t change the fact that I had reacted coldly. The fleeting smile on my face had disappeared almost instantly, replaced by an unreadable mask.Maybe that was for the best.I had been smiling too much lately, and that realization alone made something twist inside me. That wasn’t me. Lucian Monroe does not smile easily. With that thought, I made a firm decision. N

Lucian’s POVWith the contract sealed and out of the way, we moved on to planning the low-key wedding that would take place in a week. It had to be simple, discreet—nothing that would attract the media or unnecessary attention. I didn’t need the world digging into my personal affairs. But just as we were deciding on the location, a sharp knock sounded at the door.I frowned. No one was supposed to have access to the guest house like that. The guards were stationed at the main gate—who the hell had bypassed them?I strode to the door, my fingers tightening on the knob before pulling it open. And there she was.Vanessa.Her chest heaved, her eyes flashing with barely contained rage as she pushed past me without invitation.“What the hell is this, Lucian?” she spat, her voice sharp and accusatory. Then her glare shifted to Brenda, seething. “And you. So it’s true? You’re actually planning to steal my fiancé?”Brenda blinked, taken aback. “Fiancé?”I was just as thrown. When did I suddenl

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S DANGEROUS LOVE    Chapter 22

Vanessa's POVMy mind had been unsettled ever since I found out yesterday that Lucian and Brenda were planning to get married next week. Owing to my reaction the night Brenda injured herself, Lucian hadn't been answering my calls nor even replying to my messages. That bitch had finally succeeded in making him completely alienate himself from me, I thought. I had vowed to make his alienation short-lived as I headed to Lucian's house yesterday hoping to see him and apologize to him in person since he wouldn't answer my calls. The moment I had approached his door and I heard those words, at first, I thought I had misheard. I thought there was a problem with my head until he and Brenda didn't refute what I thought I heard. It felt like something inside me snapped, like my entire world was shattering before my eyes. I just kept wondering—how could he do this to me? How could Lucian, the man I had always loved, choose her? That wretched girl. That nobody.I tossed and turned all night,

Lucian's POV The steering wheel felt steady in my grip as I drove home, but inside, my adrenaline was still high from the morning events. I never imagined I would go through with this—marrying Brenda under my father’s nose, without him or my mother standing as witnesses. It had been a risk, but I had executed it perfectly.A slow, victorious smirk curled at my lips.My father had always controlled everything in my life—my choices, my future, my decisions. But this time, I had outmaneuvered him. He thought he could dictate whom I should marry, that he could manipulate my life to suit his interests. But I had beaten him at his own game. The wedding had been discreet, just as planned. No grand ceremony, no unnecessary guests—only the essential people I had arranged for. Witnesses in place of my absent parents, documents signed, vows exchanged. Suddenly, my fingers tightened slightly on the wheel as my heart gave an odd thump in my chest. That was because I remembered what followed aft

Lucian's POV The moment I found another road, I slammed my foot down on the gas pedal again, the engine roaring as we shot forward like a bullet. My heart pounded violently in my chest, my hands tightening around the wheel so hard I thought it might snap.Brenda was still trembling beside me, her breathing ragged, but she had stopped screaming. I couldn't tell if it was because she realized it wouldn’t help, or because she was in shock. The masked men were relentless. Their tires screeched behind us, their engine roaring as they struggled to keep up with my erratic maneuvers. But I had one advantage—I knew how to drive like a madman when necessary. We cut around another sharp corner, and then another. And suddenly, I saw it.The road stretched ahead of us, flanked on both sides by thick, looming forests. The towering trees stood like dark sentinels, their branches twisting overhead, blotting out most of the sunlight. The road was eerily deserted. No witnesses. An idea struck me lik

Brenda’s POVI let out a deep, shuddering breath the moment I realized we were no longer being followed. My entire body slumped against the seat, my muscles weak from the sheer intensity of the chase. My hands were still trembling as though I was the one who handled the wheels, my heart still hammering against my ribs, as if my body hadn't yet processed that we were safe.Safe.I swallowed hard. Was I really? My mind kept replaying every terrifying second—the screeching tires, the sharp swerves, the deafening gunshots, the way my stomach had clenched every time I thought the next bullet would find its mark. I had whispered so many prayers, each one feeling like it could be my last. And then, just like that, it was over.I turned my head slightly, stealing a glance at Lucian. His expression was unreadable, his hands firm on the wheel, his eyes locked on the road ahead. He looked calm—too calm, as if the chaos we had just escaped was nothing but another minor inconvenience in his life.

Brenda’s POVMy mind drifted to the guards that Lucian mentioned earlier and the thought of having them around me sent a chill through my spine. Not because I was afraid of them, but because the idea of being monitored constantly unsettled me. What if they got too close? What if they started asking questions? What if they uncovered what I had been hiding all along?I clenched my fists on my lap, willing myself to stay calm. No. That wouldn't happen. I would make sure of it.I could always set boundaries, tell them to give me space. And besides, if anything, this so-called “security” could work to my advantage. It would be a perfect excuse to avoid the media when I started working at Lucian’s company. No press, no cameras, no unnecessary scrutiny.A silver lining.I leaned back on the couch, inhaling deeply, trying to let that little piece of comfort settle in. But just as I was about to relax, Lucian’s phone rang, slicing through the silence like a blade.I glanced in his direction, c

Brenda’s POVThe night stretched endlessly, the silence thick and suffocating. I lay on one side of Lucian’s bed, my body stiff beneath the silk sheets, my heart beating a rhythm that refused to slow. Sleep was a distant luxury, one I couldn’t afford, not with the weight of tonight’s events pressing down on me.Lucian’s father’s threat replayed in my head, his cold, piercing gaze etched into my memory like a scar I’d never erase. His words had been clear—Lucian would pay for his rebellion, and I would bear the consequences too.I squeezed my eyes shut, as if that would push away the growing paranoia clawing at my chest. Every creak of the house, every whisper of the wind against the windows, sent a shiver down my spine. Was someone outside? Had his father already sent people after us? After me?I hated this.I hated feeling like prey, like a fragile pawn in a game I didn’t understand. A wedding night was supposed to be filled with warmth, passion, maybe even nervous excitement. Brenda's POV “I have evidence that could exonerate you, Brenda”I gasped, my heart pounding in my chest as Ralph's words sank in. Evidence that could exonerate me?I felt my breath hitch as a powerful wave of relief and disbelief washed over me. Could this be real? Could I finally clear my name?"Ralph," I whispered, my voice trembling, "what do you mean? What kind of evidence?"He exhaled, running a hand through his hair, his expression serious. "I found a private investigator," he said. "The same one Vivian hired."That caught me off guard. Vivian? My brows furrowed. "Vivian? What does she have to do with this?""She was already looking into Vanessa," Ralph explained. "I don't know all the details, but I know she had suspicions about her. The investigator had already started gathering proof, but I needed something solid, something undeniable. So I paid him—almost all the money Vanessa gave me—so he could finish the job and get the real evidence we needed. Evidence that proves you'r

Brenda’s POVMy entire body tensed as Ralph's words echoed in my mind."It might interest you to know that Vanessa was the one who tried to murder Inspector Smith's daughter and framed you for the attempted murder instead."I felt my breath hitch, my stomach knotting as if I'd been punched. My lips parted, but no words came out. My brain struggled to process what I'd just heard.Vanessa.She had been the one behind it all.I should have known. I should have realized that her cruelty had no limits. But this? This was beyond anything I could have imagined. Before I could fully grasp the weight of that revelation, Ralph delivered another blow."That same Inspector Smith… is my biological father. And the girl Vanessa put in a coma… she's my junior sister."I gawked at him, completely blindsided. A thousand questions stormed my mind, but none of them could take shape."Your—what?" My voice was barely above a whisper.Ralph exhaled heavily, rubbing his face as if bracing himself for somethi

Brenda’s POVThe moment my eyes locked onto Ralph’s, every muscle in my body tensed.I stood frozen, my breath coming in shallow bursts as a whirlwind of emotions crashed over me—anger, confusion, disbelief. He was the anonymous caller? The man who had warned me, saved me from being arrested?I wanted to turn around and walk away, but my feet refused to move. His expression was unreadable at first, but then his lips parted, and he took a cautious step forward."Brenda—""Stay the hell away from me," I spat, my hands clenching into fists at my sides.I couldn’t believe this. The man who had hurt me in more ways than I could count. The man who had shattered my trust, humiliated me, and set me up with that scandalous kiss—he was the one who had been watching over me?"Listen, I know you’re angry—""Angry?" A bitter laugh bubbled out of me. "I loathe you, Ralph. After everything you did, you still have the nerve to show up and act like some kind of savior?"He flinched, guilt flickering a

Brenda’s POVTwo days now.It had been two days since my life flipped completely upside down. Two days since I had run from my past—again. Two days of solitude, fear, and endless thoughts gnawing at my sanity.I sat on the edge of the hotel bed, my arms wrapped tightly around my knees, staring blankly at the beige-colored walls. The room was nothing special—just another generic hotel suite with an uncomfortable bed, dull wallpaper, and a television that I had barely glanced at.But it was safe.At least, for now.I exhaled shakily and rubbed my temples, my head throbbing from exhaustion. Sleep had been a stranger to me these past two nights. How could I sleep when my world was crumbling beneath my feet?I had some cash on me when I fled the company—enough to check into this hotel under a false name. But I knew it wouldn’t last forever. And I had nowhere else to go.Mrs. Elizabeth had always been my safe haven, but I couldn't risk going to her now. If the police were truly after me, th

Damn it!The betrayal hit harder than I ever could have imagined.I didn’t know if I was angrier at her or at myself for believing in her in the first place. But then, something changed.Right in front of me, Brenda’s entire demeanor shifted. She had been trying to plead her case—trying to get me to listen—but when her phone buzzed, she glanced at it, and suddenly…She wasn’t crying anymore. She wasn’t defensive anymore. She wasn’t saying anything anymore.Instead, her face drained of color, her fingers clutching her phone so tightly that her knuckles turned white. And then, she ran.Again.Just like she had the other day.She bolted past me so fast I barely had time to react. For a moment, I just stood there,

Brenda's POV By the time closing hour finally rolled around, I felt like I had been wrung dry.Chairman Kingsley hadn’t lingered long after his spat with Lucian that morning, but Vanessa had made it her mission to remind me exactly who held the power at work today.All. Damn. Day.She had me running back and forth, calling me into her office for the most trivial, pointless tasks—reviewing reports that had already been approved, fetching documents that weren’t even necessary, nitpicking over work I had already done perfectly. It was all a show. A game. And I let it slide.I answered her every time, didn’t argue, didn’t give her the satisfaction of a reaction. She wanted me to break. She wanted to see cracks. But I refused to let her win.Still, as I sat at my desk, gathering my things, I could feel the exhaustion pressing down on me, not just physically but mentally. It was almost exactly like before, back when I lived under her roof—back when she controlled every aspect of my life, t

Brenda's POV The moment I laid eyes on Vanessa standing in my office doorway, a surge of disbelief shot through me.Lucian had made it very clear that she was no longer welcome here, and yet, here she was, standing in front of me like she owned the place. She was smiling. Not a friendly smile, but one filled with arrogance, as if she wanted me to know she was untouchable, that she could do whatever she wanted, no matter what Lucian said.I felt my fingers curl into fists at my sides."You shouldn’t be here," I said, keeping my voice steady.Vanessa chuckled, tilting her head. "Oh, Brenda," she murmured. Lucian's POV The murmurs swelled, a storm of whispers and gasps rippling through the hall, but I had no patience for them."Enough," I said, my voice sharp, cutting through the noise like a whip. The room stilled instantly, every pair of eyes locking onto me with wary anticipation. "There's been a mix-up." I didn't elaborate, nor did I feel the need to explain myself to my employees. They worked for me—I didn’t owe them anything beyond their paychecks."Go back to your duties." My tone left no room for argument. "Now."The exodus began, people slowly dispersing, though their curious gazes lingered on Brenda and me longer than I liked. I was about to walk Brenda out, eager to remove her from their scrutiny, when a voice sliced through the thinning crowd."Excuse me!"My eyes snapped up, a sigh already building in my chest before I even saw her. Vanessa. She stepped forward, cutting through the dispersing employees with an air of authority that made it clear she wasn’t about to be ign
