Brenda's POV

The moment I stepped out of the car when I got back to the house, my blood ran cold.

A police vehicle sat right in front of the house, its presence an ominous reminder of the nightmare I was still running from.

I froze, my grip tightening around the shopping bags, my breath hitching. There was only one officer outside, standing rigidly near the car, his posture radiating alertness as if he were guarding something—or someone.

My throat tightened. The rest of them must be inside.

For a brief second, panic clawed at my chest, threatening to choke me, but I forced myself to breathe. Stay calm, Brenda. Just act normal.

I took a steadying breath, squared my shoulders, and started toward the house, making sure my steps didn’t falter.

The officer by the car barely spared me a glance, but my paranoia whispered that he could sense my fear. Don’t let it show. Don’t give him a reason to suspect you.

As I pushed through the front door and stepped inside, the air grew heavier, suffo

Lucian's POVBeads of perspiration spread across my face as I gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles tightening every few minutes as the storm in my mind refused to settle. The streets blurred past in streaks of grey and muted colors, but I barely noticed them. My thoughts were louder than the world outside, tangling into a mess that made my pulse thrum with agitation.Since last night, I hadn’t had a moment of peace.Going to Vanessa’s house was supposed to bring me clarity, a final resolution to the unease that had been gnawing at me ever since that damn ball. I thought I would confront Vanessa, clear things up, and walk away without a second thought. But instead, I left more confused than ever.Vanessa had lied to me.She had told me she didn’t love me.I had believed her.And like a damn fool, I had walked away thinking my problems were over—thinking I could move on, bury my unsettling thoughts about the masked woman, about that strange, fleeting connection I felt with her, and

Lucian's POVComing back from the hospital, I was already in a bad mood. First, I had just wasted my time making sure I wasn’t dying from some rare disease called “Falling for Every Woman I Meet Syndrome,” and second, my very serious heart concerns had turned into an unintentional comedy show for Dr. Russell. His laughter still echoed in my ears as though he was still seated before me. The fact that he even laughed till he fell off his chair made me feel less of myself back there. But damn his laughter. I would only put his advice to use. He should be grateful that the advice was the only thing that saved him.I just wanted a moment of peace. But of course, peace was a luxury I was never allowed to have when more than one woman was involved. The moment I stepped into my house, the first thing I saw made my stomach drop—my father and stepmother, Margot, sitting comfortably in my living room, waiting for me like a bad omen.I halted at the doorway, gripping the doorknob as my jaw clench

Lucian's POV The moment my parents left, frustration boiled over, and I slammed my fist onto the table. The sharp sound echoed through the room, but it did nothing to ease the anger simmering in my chest.I clenched my jaw. What the hell was I thinking?I had let myself get caught in my stepmother’s web, agreeing to a compromise that now felt like a trap. I was so focused on shutting my father up that I’d overlooked the most crucial part—who the hell was I supposed to marry? The answer was obvious.Vanessa.If I went ahead with this nonsense, the only option everyone would shove in my face was her.I ran a frustrated hand through my hair, pacing the room. No way. No damn way.I wasn’t about to let them back me into a corner like that.I needed a loophole. And then, just like that, it hit me.Brenda.My footsteps halted, and I lifted my head as her image flashed through my mind. The fiery maid Vanessa had been reprimanding. The same woman who had, for some bizarre reason, left me feel

Brenda's POVWhen I got to this house and I only did general chores for Vanessa's parents, though I knew they were hostile too, they treated me as invincible most of the time, yet I was still okay with that. But ever since the time Vanessa had made me her personal maid, she kept using me like a slave and still had me do other general chores when there were few other maids around to handle some of the tasks.Despite how I've been overwhelmed lately with chores and I get to brood most of the time over my pathetic life, the more I tried not to break down, the more Vanessa kept making my life miserable. While I stood there before the duo and she kept hurling insults at me, I held my breath as long as I could.I fought back the burning sensation in my eyes, the ache in my throat. I tried—God knows I tried—to keep my tears from falling. But no matter how hard I tried to swallow them down, I lost the battle.A lone tear broke free, sliding down my cheek.Panic surged through me.I couldn’

Brenda’s POVThe knock came again.Once, twice, and then, a third time.I didn’t move, didn’t answer. My heart pounded in my chest, still raw from my tears. Then the masculine voice boomed.“Brenda? It’s Lucian. Please, open up.”His voice cut through the silence like a warm blade through ice.I inhaled sharply.Lucian? For a moment, I hesitated, my emotions warring within me. Why was he here? Why did he care? But then I heard the concern in his voice, the way it softened, almost pleading. And before I could stop myself, I pushed to my feet.I was still barefoot, having abandoned my slippers when I first ran into the storeroom.I had forgotten about the mess I parked earlier—the shards of the broken glass which I hadn't trashed yet but held along with me when I rushed to the store. The small parker I had used to gather the glass pieces was still on the floor, untouched. But I wasn’t thinking about any of that.My gaze was fixated solely on the door and I walked towards it, my breath

Brenda’s POVA soft warmth kissed my skin, stirring me from the depths of unconsciousness. My eyelids fluttered open, and the first thing I saw was the golden light filtering through the curtains, bathing the room in a gentle glow. But something was wrong. My breath hitched as I took in my unfamiliar surroundings. The curtains—ivory with delicate embroidery—were not the ones I had woken up to every morning back at the mansion. My room there was cold, lifeless, and suffocating. But this… this was different. With a jolt, I pushed myself upright only to wince as a sharp pain shot up from my right foot to my head, and I winced, sucking in a breath as I clutched at my leg. The sudden movement had aggravated the injury. Then, as I glanced down, I saw the bandages neatly wrapped around my foot.Memories crashed into me like a tidal wave. The broken glass. The blood.Lucian.The hospital. But this wasn’t the hospital.I blinked rapidly, my eyes darting around the room.Everything screamed lux

Brenda’s POVThe moment I remembered that injection again when I saw Lucian standing at the door, an awkward shyness I couldn’t quite explain washed over me.I quickly lowered my gaze and managed a greeting, barely sparing him a glance.“Good afternoon, sir.”His deep voice rumbled in response, “You’re awake.”I nodded, my fingers tightening around the blanket covering my lap. My gaze darted to the grand chandelier hanging from the ceiling, to the intricate gold embroidery on the curtains—anywhere but at him.I heard his footsteps approaching, each one slow and deliberate. My pulse picked up as he came closer, but nothing could have prepared me for what he did next. His warm palm pressed against my forehead.I stiffened, my breath hitching in my throat. What the—?I blinked up at him, utterly bewildered. Brenda's POVI stared at Lucian, my heart still pounding from the sheer shock of his words. Will you marry me?It had sounded like a thunderclap in my ears, a ridiculous, earth-shattering thing that had no business coming from his mouth. But just as I was trying to wrap my head around it, the unreadable expression he had been wearing shifted. His lips twitched, then curved upward, and before I knew it, a deep, rich chuckle rumbled from his chest."You should have seen your face," he said, shaking his head, amusement dancing in his ocean-blue eyes.Relief flooded through me so fast I nearly melted into the pillows.Of course, he was joking.Of course, he was.I let out a nervous laugh, shaking my head at myself for even thinking for a second that he meant what he said. But suddenly, as if a switch had been flipped, Lucian’s smile vanished. His face returned to that cold, unreadable mask, his eyes locking onto mine with unrelenting intensity."I'm dead serious."The air in the room shif

Brenda's POV By the time closing hour finally rolled around, I felt like I had been wrung dry.Chairman Kingsley hadn’t lingered long after his spat with Lucian that morning, but Vanessa had made it her mission to remind me exactly who held the power at work today.All. Damn. Day.She had me running back and forth, calling me into her office for the most trivial, pointless tasks—reviewing reports that had already been approved, fetching documents that weren’t even necessary, nitpicking over work I had already done perfectly. It was all a show. A game. And I let it slide.I answered her every time, didn’t argue, didn’t give her the satisfaction of a reaction. She wanted me to break. She wanted to see cracks. But I refused to let her win.Still, as I sat at my desk, gathering my things, I could feel the exhaustion pressing down on me, not just physically but mentally. It was almost exactly like before, back when I lived under her roof—back when she controlled every aspect of my life, t

Brenda's POV The moment I laid eyes on Vanessa standing in my office doorway, a surge of disbelief shot through me.Lucian had made it very clear that she was no longer welcome here, and yet, here she was, standing in front of me like she owned the place. She was smiling. Not a friendly smile, but one filled with arrogance, as if she wanted me to know she was untouchable, that she could do whatever she wanted, no matter what Lucian said.I felt my fingers curl into fists at my sides."You shouldn’t be here," I said, keeping my voice steady.Vanessa chuckled, tilting her head. "Oh, Brenda," she murmured. "You didn’t really think I’d just disappear, did you?"I opened my mouth to reply, but before I could, a deep, furious voice thundered from behind me."What the hell are you doing here?"Lucian. His voice was thick with rage, and my entire body tensed.I turned just in time to see him storming toward us, his movements sharp, his expression deadly. His icy blue eyes were locked onto Va

Lucian's POV The murmurs swelled, a storm of whispers and gasps rippling through the hall, but I had no patience for them."Enough," I said, my voice sharp, cutting through the noise like a whip. The room stilled instantly, every pair of eyes locking onto me with wary anticipation. "There's been a mix-up." I didn't elaborate, nor did I feel the need to explain myself to my employees. They worked for me—I didn’t owe them anything beyond their paychecks."Go back to your duties." My tone left no room for argument. "Now."The exodus began, people slowly dispersing, though their curious gazes lingered on Brenda and me longer than I liked. I was about to walk Brenda out, eager to remove her from their scrutiny, when a voice sliced through the thinning crowd."Excuse me!"My eyes snapped up, a sigh already building in my chest before I even saw her. Vanessa. She stepped forward, cutting through the dispersing employees with an air of authority that made it clear she wasn’t about to be ign

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S DANGEROUS LOVE    Chapter 52

Lucian's POV The morning sunlight poured through the glass windows of the company’s grand entrance as Brenda and I walked in, hand in hand. I held her firmly, not just as a show of support but as a silent message to everyone watching—we were a united front.Yet, despite the confidence I exuded, I could feel the tension in Brenda’s body the moment we stepped inside. The atmosphere was thick with hushed conversations, barely concealed snickers, and darting glances. Even though no one dared to speak outright when I was near, the whispers were unmistakable."Did you see the way she ran last night?""Barefoot, like some street beggar!""How embarrassing—"The moment my employees realized I was within earshot, their eyes widened, and their mouths snapped shut. Some gasped audibly, covering their lips with their hands as if that would somehow erase what they had just said. Others turned abruptly, pretending to be occupied with work they hadn’t been doing a second ago.I clenched my jaw but

Lucian’s POVThe door slammed shut behind Margot, leaving behind the sharp scent of her perfume and the bitter aftertaste of betrayal.I exhaled, forcing the anger in my chest to settle.Margot.For years, I had thought of her as a woman who, despite being my stepmother, had at least harbored some semblance of care for me and my father. But tonight, that illusion shattered. She had played us all.The affection, the kindness, the support—it had all been a carefully crafted performance. The moment she showed her true colors, demanding that I step down as CEO, I knew the love she claimed to have for us was nothing but a means to an end.She wanted power. She had never cared about me. Not as a son, not even as a person.I clenched my jaw and stepped out of my office. I needed air. More than that, I needed to see Brenda.I had left her to handle the charity team, but something in my gut told me to find her. I strode down the hallway, my mind still processing the depths of Margot’s deceit,

Brenda’s POVThe gala night was in full swing. The grand ballroom buzzed with energy as elegantly dressed guests mingled, their glasses filled with the finest champagne. Soft orchestral music drifted through the air, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. From the stage, a compere welcomed notable guests while waiters moved gracefully through the crowd, serving hors d'oeuvres on silver trays. As much as I wanted to stay by Lucian’s side tonight, we both had responsibilities to ensure the success of the event. While he was handling crucial business matters, I was preoccupied with my charity team, making sure everything was in place for the charity segment of the gala.Supervising the team was no small feat. The donations had to be organized, the presentation had to be flawless, and every guest who had pledged funds for the cause had to be acknowledged. My team bustled around the side of the hall, setting up the donation booth while I double-checked our list.Vanessa was surprisingly di

Brenda’s POVLucian’s fingers were warm as they curled around mine, his grip firm yet gentle, as if he never wanted to let go. We sat in the back seat of his sleek black car, the city lights casting a soft glow through the tinted glass. The hum of the engine and the distant chatter of pedestrians outside blended into a low, soothing murmur.I couldn’t stop smiling.Everything about this moment—about us—felt so surreal. Just weeks ago, my world had been nothing but uncertainty and struggle. And now? Now I was here, my fingers intertwined with Lucian’s, heading toward an evening gala as his wife.I turned slightly, my gaze trailing over his sharp, striking features. His jawline, defined and strong, his dark eyes focused ahead as he absentmindedly stroked my palm with his thumb. The smallest of gestures, but one that sent a warmth spiraling through my chest. As I looked back out the window, watching the city glide past us in a blur of neon and moonlight, my mind drifted back to the morni
