Cold beads of sweat formed on the forehead of Ryan. His eyes had dilated fully as he stared at the medical report in his hand.
“What is it, Ryan?” Erik asked inquisitively. He was concerned about his friend. When Ryan raised his face, it was entirely flushed. Agitation was creeping all over him. “What's going on, man?” Erik asked again. “Who sent that to you?” “Ava,” Ryan replied. “Ava is carrying my child.” The statement hit Erik. “What the—?” Ryan slammed the medical report right on the table and sprang on his feet, throwing quick strides as he left the office. “Hold on, Ryan,” Erik said and followed immediately. Ryan got to the secretary with a serious look in his eyes. “Who sent this to me? Where's the lady?” “Sir, one of the security men at the gate brought it. He said a lady desperately wanted to see you. She had the envelope with her.” The secretary went on to describe the person in question. Ryan's heart exploded. It was Ava. He had no idea she was pregnant. He dashed out and took the nearest elevator downstairs. When he found his way outside the gate, there was no trace of Ava. She had left. The frustration on his face was very clear. All of a sudden, he wanted to make things right. “I told you, Ryan,” Erik said. “I warned you.” Ryan shut his eyes and opened it. Then,he turned to his friend immediately. “Erik, we have to find her. I don't want anything to happen to my child. I have to find Ava.” They rushed back in and settled in Ryan's car. Then, he drove off with one person in mind— Ava! ★★★★★ Many meters away, Ava was walking sluggishly. The whole event that transpired the previous night left her dazed. Not even in her wildest dreams could she have thought that things would turn out this way. Ryan had turned his back on her. But somehow, she was hoping the medical report would turn the tide. When she got to the restaurant where she worked, her boss, a chubby looking fifty year old woman, was standing outside. On seeing Ava, a thick scowl formed on her face. “Take this shit!” The lady said. “Good morning, ma'am,” Ava greeted her. But the angry woman wasn't ready to entertain her greeting. “That right there, bitch, is your sack letter. Your shitty services are no longer needed.” Ava dropped on her knees. She lost Ryan. Losing her job would ruin her life completely. “Please, please,” she pleaded. “You can't do this to me. You haven't paid me for three months. Don't fire me this way.” “Get lost, lowlife!!” The lady said and pushed her down. In the heat of the moment, three black SUV cars stopped and serious looking men stepped out. Just one of them walked to the two ladies. Ava's callous boss chuckled broadly at him. “Good morning, sir,” she greeted him. “You are welcome to—” The wealthy looking man shut her up with a raise of his finger. He proceeded to make a phone call. After that, he smiled at her. Then, he said politely, “From this moment, this property belongs to Avalon corp. You have three days to evacuate.” “What?” The lady asked in shock. Her phone rang and she took the call which confirmed to her that there had been a change of ownership. Her nerves froze and she went on her knees. “Please, you can't do this to me,” she pleaded. “I will—” The man in suit ignored her and turned to Ava. Then, he bowed his head to her. “Miss Woods, pardon my manners. You are safe now.” The men restrained Ava's boss. Ava got up to her feet and carefully studied the specimen before him. The man was probably in his fifties. How could he have bowed to her? “Who…are you, please?” She managed to ask. “My name is Aaron and I am the personal assistant of your father.” The statement made no sense to the innocent girl. She was an orphan. At least, that's what she always knew. Her mother died before her eyes. And the late woman always told her she had no father. “What..? My father?” She stuttered. Aaron nodded in agreement. “The chairman of Avalon corp is your birth father. He has been looking for you.” Ava shook her head. “I'm sorry, mister. But you have the wrong information. I am not the person you think I am. Sorry.” Aaron was not moved. He straightened his suit. “If you don't mind, could you come with me to the car? Don't be scared. I'll explain all you need to know.” Ava curiously but doubtfully followed him into the car. By the time he was done explaining the whole situation to her, her tears were all over her face. All these years, she lived as an orphan when she had an ultra rich father. Her fate was similar to that of her mother. The poor woman fell in love and got pregnant by Avalon Woods. When Mr Avalon was faced with the situation of either marrying a woman of his class or choosing Ava's mother, the poor woman took the bold step. To make the burden less, she eloped without letting him know about the pregnancy. “Miss Woods, your father is now aware of everything that they did to you. He knows you're pregnant also. You should leave this country. Go to your father. He's waiting for you.” Ava was subbing. She dabbed on her tears with the back of her palm. “I.. I don't want to run away,” she replied. “What I want is revenge. They have to crumble before me.” Aaron smiled. “Miss Woods, go to your father. When you have built power, you will return to this place and make it yours.” Ava was mute for a while. She thought about it. Leaving would be the best option. She needed to leave and heal from everything. She would put to bed and watch her child grow a little before making her return. “I will leave the country,” she finally said. Aaron slid his hand into his pocket and brought out a card. “Miss Woods, this is a little token from your father.” “What's this?” She asked as she received it. “There's a little money in the account. It's an apology f*e for taking so long to find you.” “How much are we talking about?” She asked. Aaron shrugged and smiled broadly. “Just five billion United States dollars.” Ava's jaw dropped in that instant. Five billion United States dollars was what Aaron called little money. She found herself wondering how much wealth was out there for her to possess. “Five…five billion dollars?” Aaron nodded. “There's something else for you to see.” They eventually left. Many moments later, they arrived at the headquarters of Avalon corp in the United States— an incredible mass of land with structures matching the ecstasy of the organization. Ava's life had transformed from a lowlife to a billionaire. He followed Aaron to an elevator that took them straight to the most prestigious office. From that height, she could see the city very well. She gasped in wonder at the magnificence of the office. “Your father occupies here whenever he visits. Miss Woods, it will be your turn soon.” Ava looked at him with curious eyes. “You are the heiress to your father's empire. This place will be yours to occupy. Be gone for a few years, build power and return.” Ava walked to the window and looked out to the city. She thought about the humiliation Ryan caused her. She would avenge it all. When she spoke again, her voice carried a powerful aura. “I will be gone for five years,” she said. “Then, I will return to this city and make it mine.”Two days later, Ryan was idling over a bottle of wine in his office— an attempt to clear the bustling thoughts in his head. He was yet to get any handy information about Ava. The door opened and his friend, Erik, walked in swiftly. “Good morning, Ryan,” he greeted him as he got to the table. “Any luck?” Ryan asked immediately, waving the greeting off. Erik heaved a sigh and stroked his hair. “Nothing yet, man.” Ryan punched hard on the table. “Ava couldn't have disappeared into the thin air, Erik. That's not even possible.” Erik straightened his posture and rubbed both hands together. “Well, it seems so. I went to where she used to work. And yes, the restaurant has been shut down. Perhaps, they moved.” There was a moment of silence. Ryan said nothing. His frustrations were visible on his face. He thought about the pregnancy. Ava didn't say a word to him about it. He wanted to make things right. But Ava was not giving him the ground to do so. “Hmm,” Erik exhaled. “Ryan,
Ryan's whole body became seriously cold as he watched the entire mind-blowing scene unfold right before him. Ava was the mysterious new chairwoman of such a big business brand…she was married…not just married, but with kids. His world was spinning. “How was your trip?” Ava asked the little ones while fiddling with their hairs. She paid little to no attention to the presence of Ryan there. Ryan stood like a lost sheep, not knowing which move he ought to make. “Adrian was asleep all through the journey!” Little Adrianna said with a loud chuckle. Adrian tucked his dad's hand in protest. Then, he said in protest, “Dad, you know that's not true. Can you tell mom here that Adrianna has told a lie against me?” Ava giggled and looked at Arnold, his husband. “Who should I believe?” Arnold simply grinned and threw his hands in askance, a gesture that meant she should not drag him into the argument. “Av…” Ryan almost called her name. But it felt as if his tongue had been
Many hours later, when night had come, Ava was dressed in her pajamas and idling with her system by the poolside. She lay on her back in a slant position while punching a few commands into her keyboard. Arnold walked to where she was with a tray settled on both hands. He was carrying a bottle of wine and two wine glasses. “Hello, pretty,” he said with a grin on his face as he dropped the tray on a stool. Ava threw a glance at him and continued what she was doing. “What are we celebrating?” Arnold giggled and rubbed his palms together. “Well, let's just say it's your revenge cause.” She paused for a while and looked at him. The memory of the shock on the face of Ryan flashed through her mind. It felt so cool to see the powerful Ryan Blake shaking before her. He hurt her because she had no influence at all. Now that she does, there's no reason to hold back on him. “Nice job, by the way,” she said and smiled. Arnold sat on the chair by her side. “What?” He asked, feigning i
When Ryan got back home, he was not in his right frame of mind. The thought of Ava occupied every part of his thoughts. As a matter of fact, the rest of his day was ruined because of her. He parked his car in the garage and walked into his house. There on the couch, Kristie was idling with her phone. On seeing him, she dropped it and stood up. Her face was full of smiles. “Hey, baby boy,” she said with a smile. “You're finally back.” She walked to him and hugged him tightly. Then, she pecked him on the cheek. Ryan was withdrawn. As a matter of fact, he had always withdrawn himself from her. But with every passing moment, he started trying to love her. After all, they were already married. And Ava was gone from his life. Everything got swept under the carpet with because of the return of Ava. He never expected it. At least, not in this manner. “Sweetheart, I'm exhausted,” he managed to say. He reluctantly stroked her back before separating himself from her. “I.. have to f
Kristie stood with both arms crossed over her chest. The look in her eyes was clear enough. She simply needed an answer from Ryan. But it was not coming. Ryan never expected she would be standing right behind him. His heart was beating heavily. He already told her that there was no problem. What lie would he tell to cover up his tracks? “She?” Erik asked on the phone. “Who are you talking about?” No response came. Ryan was still trying to figure out what he needed to say to Kristie. “Hello, man,” Erik said to him. “Are you still there?” Ryan forced a chuckle. “Yes, man. Please, I have to attend to my wife right now. You know how women can be.” He tried to sound as jovial as he could. But Kristie was obviously not going to buy the damn thing. She just needed an answer. Ryan hung up and focused on Kristie. “Hmm,” he exhaled heavily. “Is dinner ready?” Kristie glared at him. “So, you are not going to answer my question.” Ryan still kept mute. He was still processing hi
“Is this a joke?” Erik asked. Ryan sighed heavily and clasped his palms together. His head was about to blow up because of the numerous thoughts he had in it. “I wish I was simply trying to pull your legs,” Ryan replied. “I am being serious here.” Despite how serious he sounded and looked, his best friend was not ready to believe what he was saying. Erik chuckled and slapped Ryan's knee cap gently. “Come on, Ryan. You told me you would move on from your past. Believe it or not, Ava is gone. There's no way she's coming back.” He giggled. “Chairwoman? That's the creepiest thing I have heard from you in a long while.” Ryan grabbed his glass and emptied it. “You really think I'm joking about this. Look at me, Erik. You know when I'm being serious. I couldn't have called you out here suddenly simply to crack something silly.” Erik could clearly see the seriousness in the eyes of Ryan. He adjusted his position. “Are you saying she's really back? And you mean Ava is the chairwoman of
Time quickly came to a pause for Ryan. The last gulp at his wine seemed to have stuck right in his throat. He wanted to talk but could not. Ava was right there, the very woman he loved. She was at the lounge. Ava's eyes caught sight of Ryan there. But she was not moved. The lady seemed to care little about his presence. Ryan was struck by her presence. Erik too could not believe the transformation his eyes were seeing. Ava was no longer the average girl he used to know. The one standing right before their eyes was a powerful lady. She was wearing a very thick hooded sweatshirt, a pair of black pants that seemed to shimmer in the interchanging blue and red lights of the lounge, and a pair of boots. Her hair lay loosely over her back and shoulders. “Damn it, bro,” Erik muttered. “Ava is really back. And she's in goddess mode.” Ryan kept staring at her. He thought of waving at her. But his muscles would not seem to agree with him. “You should go to her now,” Erik chipped in. Ryan l
Around 3am the next day, Kristie was standing by the window in their room and looking out. She was awake and restless. Her husband was not the type to keep late nights. She could feel that something was wrong. But there was no way to figure out what it was. She had tried to call Ryan many times. The calls were never answered. It was freaking her out. After a while, she decided to place a different call. She scrolled through her contacts and found the number of her father-in-law, Mr Blake, and dialed it. One ring…two rings…three rings… the call connected. “Hello, Kristie,” the elderly man said as he took the call. “Why do you call me at this time of the night?”Kristie cocked her hair. “I'm sorry, dad. It's just…it's just that—” Mr Blake cut in. “What is going on? Did you have a fight with my son?” “No,” she replied. “That's not it.”“What is it, Kristie? Tell me why you've called me at three in the morning. I have to get back to sleep.” She cleared her throat. “I think…I think h
Ryan was in his office idling with his phone. He had his eyes fixed on the message he had sent to Ava. It didn't look like any response was going to come. When he got no response, he dropped the phone and slid a picture out of his chest pocket. It was a picture Ava took on their first date on a summer afternoon. He still had the picture in his hand when the office telephone rang. “Hello,” he said as he took the call. “Sir, someone is here and wants to see you,” his secretary said. Ryan wasn't expecting any guests. He quickly stole a glance at his schedule board. It didn't indicate that he was supposed to meet someone. “Who might that be?” He asked. At the same time, he flipped the CCTV footage on his system. When he looked, the guest came into view. His eyes were definitely playing pranks on him. There was no way Ava's husband had come to see him right in his office. “Mr Arnold.. Arnold Clifford, Sir,” she replied. Ryan smiled partly and reclined in his chair. “Let him in.” H
The next morning, Arnold walked into Ava's room when she was giving her hair the last few touches before leaving. Ava eyed him through the mirror before her. “Good morning, Arnold,” she greeted him. “Good morning, sunshine,” he responded. Ava paused what she was doing and stared at him through the mirror for a few seconds before continuing. “Arnold, I already told you this,” she said. “You don't have to sound this way when there is no need to.” Arnold caught sight of the lavender on the bed. He walked to it and grabbed it. “How…did you get this?” He asked her. Ava stole a glance at him. Then, she said, “I have no idea. A present from a fan, I guess. It came anonymously.”Ryan crossed her thoughts. There was no way Ryan would send a bouquet of lavender to her. At least, not now. But who else would it be? He was obviously the only one who knew about her love for lavender. Arnold giggled. “I sent it to you,” he said. Ava immediately stopped what she was doing and looked at him.
Kristie was in her father's house. She had tears rolling down her eyes as she thought of Ryan and Ava. At that moment, it was very clear to her that Ryan would never come to the point of having any affection for her. A couple of moments later, the engine of her father's car revved into the premises. She knew better than to keep crying. Her hands quickly wiped off the last traces of tears in her eyes. Mr Biden walked in with a broad smile on his face. “And my angel came visiting,” he said and spread his arms. Kristie stood and hugged him while forcing a smile. “Good evening, daddy,” she said. Her father quickly noticed the change in her tone. He pulled away and looked at her. “Kristie, you were crying,” he said. Kristie sat down. “No, I was not.” Mr Biden smiled and sat beside her. “Is this still about Ryan?” When Kristie didn't give him a response, he chuckled and said, “I paid him a visit earlier on.”Kristie looked at him. “Why?” “For my daughter, of course,” he replied a
When Ava got to work the next morning, she could see there was a little commotion outside the headquarters of Avalon corp. There were people loitering around and being held back by the security personnel around the vicinity. “What's…going on here?” She muttered while focusing her attention out there. Arnold chuckled slightly. “Are you really asking that question right now? Come on, Ava.” Ava looked at him. “What do you mean?” “In case you don't know, you are currently the most popular person in this city at the moment. The event last night has taken over the internet. I bet these people are here to get a few words from you.” Ava smiled on realizing what that meant. The moment her car was spotted arriving at the office, everyone turned their attention to her and raced towards the car. But the security guys were good at their job. They held the people back while Arnold found his way to the parking area. Arnold got out and opened the door for her. They locked arms and walked in, st
Later in the night, Ryan drove back home. He had purposely delayed his return to make sure his wife, Kristie, was deeply asleep before he returned. He parked in the garage and killed the engine of the car. For a couple of moments, he stayed back in the car and stared at different pictures of Ava that were online. He just had no way of getting over her. He soon got out of the car and carried himself into the house. The lights were already off. His hands groped to find the light switch. When he turned it on, his eyes met with those of Kristie. His heart flew. He wasn't expecting to see anyone there. But Kristie was there. She sat on the couch with her legs crossed. On the table was a bottle of wine and a wine glass. “Oh my goodness,” he muttered. “You scared me.” Kristie smiled at him. “You were obviously not expecting me to be here by twenty minutes past two in the morning.” Ryan said nothing. He just stole a glance at his wristwatch. “You reek of alcohol,” she continued. “
Ryan, at this point, felt completely broken. Ava mentioned she had a tough life. And he knew she was pointing fingers at him. He knew he was the one. But beyond that, she announced her love for Arnold to the people all around the globe. He was still sitting there, bleeding in his heart, when his father and Molly found him. He stole a glance at them approaching him and heaved a sigh. He knew he was up for another issue. “What did I just watch, Ryan?” Mr Blake asked him. Ryan said no word. He just kept mute without even looking at him. “Ryan,” Molly called him. “How is that low life the new—” Before she could finish the rest of the words, Ryan cut her off. “She… is not a lowlife,” he corrected. “As a matter of fact, she was never a lowlife.” Mr Blake heaved a disgruntled sigh. “How long have you known about this? Why the hell didn't you mention that your ex is the new chairwoman of Avalon corp?” Ryan was exhausted and needed a break from everything. If he had told them, what wou
Every attention turned to Molly. They all had inquisitive looks in their eyes. “What do you have there?” Mr Blake asked her. “Something else has taken over the internet,” she replied. “What are you talking about?” Kristie queried her. “What else could there be other than the fact that this group is supposed to launch the new company tonight?”Molly shook her head and turned the screen of her phone to them. Everyone drew closer and looked at the screen. The caption read, “Avalon corp set to reveal the new chairwoman.” The moment Ryan saw it, his heart began to pound. It was Ava. She will reveal herself to the world tonight. “Did you ..know about this?” Mr Blake asked Ryan. Ryan shook his head. “No, I didn't.” “Damn it!” Mr Biden groaned. It became clear to them that the reason everyone didn't come for the launching of the new company was Avalon corp. And Ryan knew this was not just a coincidence. Ava simply wanted to hunt him. Everyone flipped out their phones and started str
Some days later, the internet was buzzing with adverts of the launch of the new company. Ryan did everything in his power to make sure it was streamed by every media outlet out there. He simply wanted the business to grow higher. It was his way of making up for the recent falls. Ryan stood in front of a mirror and buttoned his red Parisian tuxedo. It went with his black pants, a pair of shiny black shoes. After making sure he was in great shape, he grabbed his gold-plated wristwatch and locked it on his left wrist. Then, he sprayed his cologne all over his body. Kristie opened the door and walked in. On seeing Ryan, a smile crossed her lips. “Sweetheart, you look sweet tonight,” she said to him.Ryan turned and saw her. Kristie was wearing a long handless red dress. He could see her beauty. It just couldn't appeal to his emotions the whole time they've been together. “And you are stunning tonight,” he replied. Kristie walked up to him and kissed him on the lips, painting his lips
Hours later, Ryan was in a local tavern drinking alone. He had texted Erik to join him and waited. He simply needed a way to escape the reality he found himself in. Slowly, pieces of his life were beginning to fall apart. And it was because of Ava. The thought of them having to end up the way they did was crushing his bones. A stripper walked up to him with giggles on her face. “Hello, handsome,” she said and caressed his back. Ryan turned on the high stool and looked at her. The last thing he needed was to be disturbed. “I'm not interested,”he said bluntly and gulped at his glass of wine. But the stripper girl was persistent. She touched his jaw and leaned closely. “I see a stressed man,” she mused in a whisper. “Let me ease you of your stress. You are too cute to be alone.” “He doesn't want you!” Erik said out of nowhere. "Let him be." Ryan looked and saw his friend, Erik. He walked up to Ryan and mounted on the next stool. “I just told you he is not interes
