ALPHA RYKER

As my convoy drove through the gates of the Dupont mansion, I tried to maintain a cool facade. Aaron Dupont had been pestering me for a meeting, and every time I cancelled, he played strings like a cat with its mouse. I hated how trapped I felt, and to think it wasn't even my choice, yet here I was.

I hated his games, but this is what you get for becoming a collateral for the devil's bidding, and fucking his granddaughter nonetheless. Lauren wasn't home, and the shift festival was in three hours. I decided it was best to finish this dirty business in her absence and today. I wanted to just move on from this sordid deal once and for all.

A rotund bald man with rosy cheeks, dressed in an impeccable white dresshirt and black pants waited at the entrance of the house. I recognised him immediately. He was Aaron's longest serving staff, and as I've deduced, confidente.

“Alpha!” he greeted rather brightly, curtsying the moment I stepped out of my car.

“Varys” I responded as I

XAVIERAI stood in the large park with over thirty wolves. Leesa and Adeline stood on both sides of me, waiting for the moon to emerge. Rewind to how I got here, ready to shift with the others. I had successfully walked out that door, and returned home, then I couldn't go through the door, because I couldn't phase through walls—or doors, and I had left my keys inside, and Anna had gone to the clinic. After contemplating going to the hospital, or simply assisting Moondrops at the park for over five minutes, I had gone with the latter. However, on getting to the park, I figured Moondrops was already overstaffed. So, I let Adeline win. Again. She had quickly pulled me in, a little too glad that I had changed my mind, then proceeded to outline the stops they intended to take. She however emphasised on being close and not missing each other. “Remember, you have stick with the subpack” she had reiterated severally. Leesa had taken the invincible baton, explaining the formation which soun

BETA CADEN“We are due to receive another body soon”Ryker’s words rang in my head. He could be a damn cynic sometimes, but it was just what it was. If Hrolf was anything like his father and brother, we should be expecting two bodies on the Crescent Moon festival. Ryker remained stoic as he watched the bright lights from our position. I could tell a lot weighed on his mind. Today was quite eventful. Firstly, it was the thing with priestess Ama, and the goddess telling him he'd sacrifice something dear to him for the safety of the pack, and that he hadn't gotten what it was yet. I had an idea, but I didn't think it was possible. A lot of things weren't making sense lately. And, there was Aaron, the goddess heavily forbid—his future grand father in-law. There was something about that man that seemed quite off. His personality wasn't likeable, but there was this dark aura around him. I knew Ryker felt this too, he hated the man, I wondered why he wanted to even marry his granddaughter.

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    22: WHEN THE BETA CALLS

XAVIERAThe sound of a horn pierced through the night sky for the second time tonight. Party was over. I ran as fast as my feet could take me. My heart beat was erratic, threatening to burst out of its encasement.“Vie, wait!” Adeline called after me, hot on my trail. I ran till I hit the tarred road, out of the woods, and further till I reached the spot we had shifted. I ran into one of the stalls shifting immediately. It was only then I realised I didn't bring in extra clothes. “Shit!”Adeline ran into the store. “Vie?” She called. “In here!” I responded aloud. “Naked” I muttered. I heard another stall open and close. An eternity later, Adeline knocked on my stall door.“Vie?” She called. I unlocked the door, poking my head out. “Here” she handed me some clothes.“Thanks” I stretched taking them, then proceeded to wear them. She brought me black sweatpants, a white tank top and black sneakers with white soles. The clothes looked new, although I couldn't find a tag on it. It fit me

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    23: WANTON THOUGHTS AND NEW LIES

BETA CADENI have always masked my feelings, because I hated for anyone to access my thoughts or guess my moves. I could mask anger, irritation, hate, distaste—if I wanted to. However, what I couldn't really mask was desire or lust, or whatever it was that Xaviera evoked in me anytime we were within close proximity. From the first day she'd taken to her heels, to the day we ended up doing dishes in the Kitchen, she had been a person of interest. Whatever it was I felt hadn't developed into something I wanted to name, not yet. But, I have never felt the urge to have a woman in my arms as much as I did her tonight. The mad drive to sample those beautiful lips, have those green eyes drink me in as I explored each part of her mouth, our positions notwithstanding, was something I had never experienced. Even as I drove back to the Manor, I couldn't stop thinking of how luxuriant her hair was, how her eyes twinkled beneath the moon light, and how much I wanted to trace the beautiful outline

The moment I got home last night, I had quickly gotten out of my dress, freshened up and had settled for Mac and cheese. ALPHA RYKERI took the elevator located at the farthest end of the mansion with three of my most trusted men; Caden, Calum and Reid, heading for the basement below. The machine beeped, sliding open in its usual noiseless fashion directing us to a long hallway with a door at the farthest end. We strode out, walking straight to the door our feet light on the tiled floor. I checked my wristwatch, I had just fifteen minutes. The ball would begin soon. As I walked, I couldn't help but remember the first time my father brought me down here. He had requested Eileen to bring me home one Saturday, and had taken me on a long silent stroll in the garden. Then, out of the blue, he said he wanted to show me something. He had taken me back into the mansion, through the various hallways upstairs till we stopped at the elevator, then we headed downwards. “Every person of power has one little space, where they work it out, draw information, get answers to political and war issues, or anything relatin

XAVIERAI stood before the large mirror in Adeline's room, stunned by the amazing creature who stared right back at me. The last time I had seen her was over five years ago, the night of the Red festival. The next day, she was gone, as had everyone who used to know her. I hadn't seen her since then. However, she showed up again tonight, a little older now, more comely, still sophisticated, and gorgeously adorned in beautiful fabric, jewelleries and a perfect hairdo. I missed feeling beautiful. Adeline was right. This dress was made just for me. I loved how the silky fabric of the off-shoulder, low cut back dress draped elegantly on my body. The corset had cinched masterfully at the waist accentuating my figure, making my waist smaller, while the flowy skirt made my hips a little bit wider. The bodice was slightly beaded, with beautiful embroideries. The skirt pooled at my feet, the lower part of my body hidden in several layers of fabric covered with tulle. A slit tore from my right

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    31: BEGINNING OF THE AFTERMATH

ALPHA RYKERI stood on the balcony of my room, overlooking the garden below, watching the sun rise. A cup of coffee laced with brandy sat warm in my hands. I hadn’t slept a wink last night; Too many thoughts had kept me awake, and I wasn't a fan of pills. I watched the round resplendent globe rise slowly, dispelling darkness of the night and casting a golden glow over everything within its focus. I turned away from the sight of it, back to my chair. My laptop sat booted and running on the glass table. I had used work to past time, hoping sleep would come along the line, but it didn't. A lot had happened in the past few weeks, and even if I had trained myself never to worry over things that were out of my control, it was tough to ignore how incessantly out of control things were becoming. Firstly, the dark moon pack kept on infiltrating our pack, murdering and kidnapping, and the more we tightened security measures, the more the casualties. It was as if they could walk through anythi

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    30: THE GODDESS' PLAY

BETA CADENLife is never stagnant, I'm quite aware of that. But sometimes, the way it moves is quite surprising. That also goes without saying life is full of surprises, and in one night, I'd been hit with two of it—two powerful curve balls. Ryker, who had never believed in mates, and had planned his life without the appearance of one, had been given a mate. And not not just any other, but the woman that had piqued my interest. A woman he obviously didn't want. Everyone was astonished for several reasons. Ryker, because he'd been placed in a precarious position by tonight's happening. Xaviera, as any woman in her situation ought to be, was terrified and astonished, which was justified. My mother wasn't just elated, but relieved. And she had enough reasons to be. I was relieved, but not elated. I had my game set, and the goddess had played her hand. I stood in the crowd, watching them dance, tension oozed heavily between them, and a knot tightened in my chest. They both didn't want

XAVIERAStillness. That was the first reaction the world offered to this unfathomable revelation. Everything stilled for a few seconds, then continued quite slowly. The moon spilled over us. Snow-like trasculescent flakes dropped from the sky bathing us in its beauty. I however couldn't enjoy the moondusts as I did previous years, being in the centre of it, nonetheless. My mind was too preoccupied to actually enjoy the ‘peak’ of the festival as Adeline would describe it. Turns out our definition of peak had been altered tonight. I stood dazed, unable to process what had just happened, and the implications of what it meant. The man before me seemed equally stunned, but aside from shock, there was hard disbelief. I became very much aware of the continuous gasps and murmurings around us, we weren't the only ones in disbelief. There was also curiosity, and the question they so badly wanted answers to was “who is she?” Who was I?I had been mated to the insanely gorgeous Alpha Ryker of t

  • THE ALPHA'S SECOND CHOICE    CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

XavieraThe rest of the week was not without the constant reminder that my life had changed. The whispers had morphed into smiles and small bows, and then suspicious whispers. I overheard two women discussing one time, the possibility of the Alpha marrying his girlfriend, instead of his mate. Another time, two women were comparing myself and his current girlfriend. They said she was more classy, and elegant. Some had said she was more regal, a Crescent she-wolf and was the best fit for Luna, so they didn't know why the goddess picked me. One woman had even described me as a ‘pick-me’ girl. The gossips were becoming quite unbearable, and I didn't know why it affected me. I hadn't always bothered how people thought of me, attractive or not. One time, I was the stunning moon in my pack. If preferences were different, I didn't really mind. I was done with all the attention of my previous life. Also, Alpha Ryker could sleep with the whole town if he so wished, it was none of my busines
