Isabella's POV

The cold metal chair under me seemed to be sinking into the floor, as though the entire room was closing in and smothering me. There was nothing I could do about my trapping. My pulse was a furious drumbeat in my ears, every thundering beat reminding me of the distance I had descended into this dream from.

Isabel. His voice sliced across my chest's panic. Luke's. He moved forward, his shadow hardly seen against the dazzling light above. The strange pull in my chest at the sound of his voice caused my heart to stutter in my chest, caught between the wrath boiling within me.

"You said you would protect me," I said, the words tight and battling the tremor in my throat. None of this, Luke, feels like protection. None of this speaks to love. Desperate for anything—anything—to disprove me, I looked at his eyes.

His eyes softened, but beneath the surface there was something darker—an unreadable depth that just drove me farther away. "Isabella, I wanted to keep you out of this.

My eyes battled to adapt to the gloom as I backed up until my heels touched the edge of the sofa.Peering through the door frame, Luke pushed his back against the wall. He inhaled, still as a predator stalking its prey. His shoulders then became rigid.Under his breath, he said "They're here," then turned to stare at me with a desperation that drove my anxiety racing. "We have to hurry. now.The window behind me broke suddenly, glass fragments falling all about as a masked man ran into the room.As Luke attacked the invader, his voice was a yell. "Isabella, come on! Isabella’s POV"Do you ever consider us, Luke? My voice barely above a whisper, I queried as the dim glimmer of the dying firelight created flickering shadows on his face. Tense in his body, he sat across from me with the weight of the evening squarely between us. The air smelled moist ground and burnt wood, mixing with the bitter sense of sadness.Stormy and relentless, Luke's gaze fixed on me. "Us?" he said, his voice sharp. "Isabella, nostalgia is not appropriate right now.""It's not nostalgia," I fired back, palms twisting into fists. "Survival here is what it is. You risk everything and have been battling for me all this time; however, you would not tell me why. I mean something to you or not?He flinches at the raw sharpness in my voice, but his reply was sharp and exact. "You consider this to be about emotions? It is about ensuring your survival. You promised Isabella, Said to me we would tackle this together.Breath seizing at the sight of his blood-soaked clothes and the fury in his eyes, I turned to him.
