Ava's POV
Tension permeated the night air, and I could feel it as weight on my chest. Having Eli next to me caused both comfort and anxiety. Since I had opened the journal and perused the names, the faces, the secrets... The sensation that everything was about to fall apart had not been able to be overcome.
Eli looked at me, his eyes sharp and seeking. "Ava, right now we have to move gently. Every stride counts.
I nodded while a million questions flew through my head. And if we fail as well? My voice came out softer than I had planned.
"We then lose everything." And I am not just referring to each other. His comments had a weight that caused shivers. It was everyone entangled in this mess, all the individuals Eli had recorded in his notebook, not only the two of us at risk.
I turned down once again and held it to my chest. "There are folks here I thought I could trust," I whispered. Eli, how long have you known? About them all?
His darkening eyes followed his hand through his hair. Longer than I would want to acknowledge. But Ava, I could not tell you. Though it was too dangerous, I wanted to, trust me.
"Too risky?" Unable to control the irritation in my voice, I fired back. Eli, you were hiding truths involving my life as well. You questioned if I deserved to know?
He opened his lips to answer, then closed it, staring away as though he could not accept my charge. That exceeded my expectations in terms of pain. I relied on him and trusted him. Now, though, it seemed as though we were on opposing sides of a border I had not even realized existed.
A shadow suddenly moved across from us in the alley. My heart sprang to my throat, and I pushed Eli back against the wall automatically.
"Did you witness that?" I muttered.
He nodded and stiffened his muscles. We still stood and listened. Soft yet purposeful, footsteps from the darkness echoed back.
He muttered, "Stay here," and turned away from me.
"Eli, no—,"
But he was already disappearing into the darkness, his form merging with the night. I swallowed back the want to call after him by clenching my hands. Though I desired nothing, terror tore at me every second that went by like an age. Our cover was about to be blown.
I inhaled slowly and shakily, then turned to see around the corner from the brink of the building. Eli's silhouette emerged as he neared the man—tall and clearly confident in his posture.
Eli halted several yards away, his voice quiet yet plenty for me to hear. "You're making a mistake just by being here.
The man laughed, and I shivered from something in that chuckle. " Am I? Funny, Eli. I thought you were making all the mistakes. You start first digging where you shouldn't be. Then you carry her into it. His motion in my way caused my heart to skip a beat without even turning to see. He knew I was on here.
Eli remarked, his voice icy, "I had to." "You were never going to quit unless someone pushed you to. She is entitled to know what is occurring.
Oh, she deserves to know, does she? The guy moved forward, his words mocking. And with all that reality, Ava, what are you going to do? Do you think you can manage it?
The question struck me more forcefully than I would have wanted to acknowledge. Might I be able to manage it? I considered what I had observed as well as all Eli had said. Still, I became rebellious as I stood here listening to this stranger taunt me.
I moved on, shockingly even for me. "I doubt that is the choice you will make."
The man turned to study me, a smile flickering on his lips. Older, his face showed lines of experience, his eyes keen and deliberate. Almost pleased, he added, "You're braver than I expected."
"Is that a problem for you?" My voice steadier than I felt, I asked.
Laughing, he Oh, not really at all. Actually, it is exactly what I wanted.
Eli rushed between us, barring him, before I could respond. He went closer. Eli said, his voice fatal, "Stay away from her."
Pretending innocence, the man raised his hands. "Relax, Eli." All I am here for is a chat. Not necessary to make it messy. Still.
Eli stiffened his jaw but stayed still. "What do you seek?"
The man's gaze swung to me then turned back to Eli. "A choice." Really, it's simple. You turn over that notebook—his eyes fixed on the one I hold—and we forget any of this occurred. Nobody suffers injuries.
And if we fail as well? I pushed myself to meet his stare and asked.
His grin felt less like ice than it should. "Well, let's say a lot of people will wish you had."
Silence dense and strained descended upon us. Eli seemed to be thinking over every conceivable consequence, his fingers twitching at his side. I was aware, though, he wouldn't yield. Deeply down, I also knew I couldn't either. Not following all we had unearthed.
"Good," I responded, moving closer to meet the man's gaze. "Come and pick it if you so want."
The challenge was before I could stop myself. Eli's eyes darted to me, his face a mix of astonishment and panic. Still, I resisted. Long enough, this man—whoever he was—had guided our lives. I was done fearing.
He bent his head, looking at me as though he were seeing something unusual. "Brave... or foolish?” He peered between us, something mechanical flashing in his eyes. "We'll find out shortly enough, too."
He retreated into the shadows with that, his form melting into the black. Long after he had left, the alley remained quiet and motionless. Though under it was a nauseating terror that tore at me the longer we stood there, I could still feel the excitement rushing through me.
Eli, what are we going to do? My voice just whispered, I asked.
He let out a leisurely breathed grasp to draw me near. His embraces grounded me, calmed me down. "Ava, we are going to end this. You are not hiding anymore. There is no more running. We call it finished.
His words reverberated through me, sharp and driven. I believed him for the first time in what seemed like eternity. We had gone through too much to turn back now; whomever this man was, whatever he wanted... we would confront him together.
One thing became clear to me as we stood there: this was not finished. Our will was strengthened. Not by a long stretch. And even if that was terrible, I embraced it in some measure. I was not going to be scared this time.
AVa's POV As we raced down the lonely road, the stillness in the automobile seemed more weight than it had ever done. The gloom outside appeared to push against the windows, and I could not help but believe it was crushing on us, too—wrapping up every hidden secret, every bit of truth Eli had omitted.Eli kept his eyes on the road, his jaw closed to indicate he was grappling with what he had not uttered. Years had passed between us, and throughout all that time I had never felt so far from him. Alternatively he might have just improved at concealing."Who else knows?" My voice startled the quiet and sounded more strong than I had meant. But following what I had discovered and all the falsehoods... I had to know.He looked at me momentarily then back toward the road. "It was just me and a handful of people. Ava, you were kept out of it to guard you."To guard me?" I gave out a sour laugh. "Keeping secrets just leaves me in the dark; it does not protect me, Eli."He moaned, tightening
Ava's POV As I entered Eli's flat, which seemed to be a lonely, empty shell where memories persisted but warmth had long ago vanished. Knowing full well that anything I discovered may change everything, I came here seeking questions.Unspoken words were in the air as Eli slammed the door behind me. His eyes looked to be inscrutable, a stronghold of secrets apparently indestructible. I was not, however, backing down this time.Starting with "Ava," his voice a deep rumble, "I know what you're thinking.""Do you?” I drew back, crossing my arms. "Because I'm not even sure I know what I'm thinking now. I doubt even what is genuine since you have kept me in the dark for so long.He moved nearer, his face softening. "I never intended things to be this way. I reasoned I could hide it from you. I reasoned that would keep you secure.Shaking my head, I battled the need to yell. Eli, safe from what? You still won't give me the truth; I already live in the center of whatever this is.He simply s
Ava's POV Watching Eli pace the room, his expression locked between regret and something darker—probably fear—and I could not breathe. Since he began talking, he hadn't yet looked me in the eye; however, this time I was letting him evade me."So, you are telling me this has been going on for... exactly how long?" My voice hardly steady as I asked. "You concealed all this from me for years, and felt it was alright since it was for my protection?”"It was never that simple," he said at last, looking directly at me. His eyes reflected a mix of vulnerability I had never seen before and embarrassment. "I felt I could keep you out of it all and manage it. But things were increasingly difficult.I laughed, then clenched my hands. " Complicated? Eli, I have been in danger without even seeing it! Do you know how powerless that renders me?Thick with suspense, the room went still for a minute. Eli's face softened and his shoulders slumped as though he carried a weight too great for one person.
Eli’s POV My secrets' weight was finally falling on me. Ava's expression betrayed both fury and loyalty, and I could see why. Believing it was safer that way, I had kept her in the dark for so long. But here she was, putting together the elements of my life I had always sought to divide."I did everything for Ava, all for you. Every danger, every lie—I was attempting to guard you, my voice unvarnished. She gave out a sour laugh. "Guard me?" By driving me into peril without even realizing it?I had replayed this scenario in my brain a thousand times, but now it was far more terrible. "I had no idea how far it would sink. When I initially became engaged with Marconi, it was straightforward. He needed someone on the inside, and I considered it as just temporary—until I had sufficient information to turn him in. But it veered out of control.Ava's eyes closed as her rage flared. Eli, you could have told me. I had a right to know."Possibly. But, as you would know, they would have sensed
Ava's POV The weight of our plan pulled down on me as I slid into the lovely evening gown. Designed to fit Marconi's unique humanitarian occasion, it was a borrowed facade. The garment gleamed in Eli's apartment's dim light, but it seemed more like a chain binding me to this dangerous work."Are you persuaded regarding this??" Eli's voice came out from behind me, mixed with resolve and worry. Looking in the mirror at me, he adjusted the cufflinks on his tailored suit. Though I could see the tension etched in every feature of the man standing there, he seemed almost the guest."I'm sure," I said, trying to project confidence I lacked totally. We have gone too far to undo right now.He nodded and his jaw clenched. "Marconi won't slow down if he suspects anything.""I know," I said softly. Still, there's an unexpected element. He knows nothing about my arrival. This qualifies you both as an asset and a target. He came forward, his fingers lightly brushing across mine. You will do as I l
Ava's POV From the mansion, the streets melted together. My heartbeat had hardly slowed since we departed; every flicker of headlights behind us made my heart leap. Eli's jacket pocket kept the data firmly in place, but the weight of what we had done hovered about like a dense fog."Are you nice??" Eli's hands grabbing the steering wheel shattered the silence.I nodded, though the fact was far more complicated. "I'm ok." Mostly trying to catch my breath. His eyes went to the rearview mirror in search of any sign of pursuit. "We made it out," he said, as though trying to convince himself. Marconi, though, will not let this slide.I grasp. I found the weight of what we opposed returning to me. "Do you believe he realized?"Not at the moment, Eli answered, his mouth firm. "But he will shortly." The second will come for us; he discovers nothing amiss or even traces of betrayal.I drew hard, the understanding sinking in. We have to remain ahead of him then. Where from here should I be goi
Eli's POV Marconi's voice slinked across the night, spasming my spine. I made myself cool even if the weight of our situation crashed on me. Ava halted next to me, and I grasped her hand firmly. Her breath stopped Not just now; we couldn show fear.Marconi entering the dim light stated, "You have been quite the thorn in my side, Eli." His attire was beautiful, his grin predatory. To be very honest, I find it really impressive. Most people seldom remain this long.Retaining a forceful voice, I shot back, "I aim to disappoint." Every phrase was intentional, every second a chance to get away. Every minute to consider.Marconi laughed a deep, terrifying note. "Brave words for a man on the run."I went gently to sleep between Ava and him. "What then do you want, Marconi?"His eyes gleamed with entertainment. "My ideal has always been control. Eli, you have been too long meddling in my life. And today you have included this lovely woman into it. such a loss.Ava stayed rigid next to me, bu
Eli and I staggered along the black lane, our breaths raspy and mixing with the coolness of the night as the wind swept over her hair. Every stride seemed like a curse as much as a success. Marconi was gone, but so was any sort of protection we might have grabbed. My ideas flew, every one darker than the next. I looked at Eli; his face was pallid and his gait was heavy."You have to relax," I advised, sounding worried. Blood flowed across the improvised bandage around his side. You are bleeding way too much.He shook his head, his eyes flashing. Away from here. We have to move farther away.Though it would not make any difference, I knew he was right. Every fall, every grimace that graced his face tightened my heart. We persisted, negotiating tight spaces until we came to an abandoned warehouse. The door creaked open with a reluctance that matched our tiredness, and we stepped into the heavy air gathering in all about.Eli leaned against the wall and slid down till he was on the chill
