Ava's pov)

The morning of my eighteenth birthday arrived far too quickly than I would have liked. The early morning sun filtered into my room from my window as I stared up at the cracked ceiling above my bed.

The selection was today. Right on my birthday. Every year the werewolves go to the few remaining human settlements scattered around the continent to take humans who have just turned 18 to work as their servants until they are 50 or if you are lucky enough to have a good ‘master’ — as they love to refer to themselves, who would let you start a family in a settlement close to the pack but you'd still come to their houses every day to work.

Centuries ago, humans and werewolves lived together in peaceful harmony but that was until we became greedy, power-hungry. We wanted to have supreme reign over the werewolves. A war broke out and the werewolves in their great strength and numbers defeated us, the majority of the human population was lost. To stop the werewolves from completely annihilating us a treaty was made, humans from the ages of 18 would be collected every year to serve the werewolves.

They needed an ultimate ruler, the first alpha king was made. He was able to possess strength far greater than other werewolves, he was bigger and faster. He was said to have been specially blessed by the moon goddess herself — a supreme being who was said to have created the werewolves.

He passed down this blessing to his descendants and they have continued his legacy by honoring the centuries old treaty.

“Hi honey,” the sound of my mom's voice breaks my train of thought. I spotted her standing by my doorway.

She walked into my room and sat on my bed.”I know today is…hard” her voice cracks.

“I can't bear to lose you Avey, not after losing your brother.”

Avey…a childhood nickname my brother had given me, he said Ava was too long. I guess he didn't understand the concept of nicknames back then. The name has stuck ever since.

I miss him, he went missing shortly after getting selected seven years ago.

“Mom…” I said sitting up and moving closer to her at the edge of my tiny bed. “You aren't going to lie to me, I promise. I will escape no matter what, I will never bow down to those monsters.” I said fiercely, determination burning in my heart.

My mom choked on a sob as she pulled me into a tight hug.

“Please don't do anything reckless, listen to them. Hopefully you'll get a nice master, please Avey.” She whispered in my ear as she hugged me.

“Alright, let's go to the kitchen and get you something to eat before they arrive.” She said pulling away.

Standing up, I picked up a big fur coat and put it on. We live close to silver claw pack, it always snows here so we always have to bundle up to fight the cold. Silver claw sock is one of the 10 packs in lycara — the werewolf continent. Members of the pack are well known for their high enforcement and elite tracking skills.

I caught sight of a reflection of myself on the broken mirror I hung on the wall by my doorway. My silver hair was pin straight as usual, icy blue eyes as striking as ever. I had always wondered why I looked different from my parents and brother, my mom said it's due to a harmful substance she knowingly ingested while pregnant with me.

In the kitchen, a warm breakfast had already been placed on our little dining table. My dad was whispering something to my mom, he pulled away as soon as he spotted me. My usual funny and goofy father was quiet today.

“Happy birthday Avey, my little girl is all grown up.” He said trying to muster up a smile but failing. He was teary eyed but tried not to let the tears fall.

“I have a little gift for you.” He said, handing a little wooden box to me as I settled into one of the dining chairs.

Taking the box from his outstretched hand I opened it and gasped at the sight before me. It was a little silver necklace and a single pearl pendant.

“I…I can't take this dad,” I said. “This must have cost you a fortune, I don't want you and mom to suffer because of the money you spent on this. Please take it back and return it.” handing the box back to him.

“Don't worry about us Ava, we will be fine. Please take it, we want you to have something to remember us with. A little gift for you to hold on to whenever you miss home. Please take it.” He pleaded.

Hesitantly, I withdraw my outstretched hand and remove the necklace from the box.

“Can you put it on me?” I asked him.

He came around the table, took the necklace from me and secured it around my neck. Planting a kiss on my head he said, “My little girl.”

“Alright, enough of the sentiment, I'm not dying. Dig in! Don't let the food get cold.” I said, trying to lighten up the mood.

We laughed as they both began to eat, talking and making jokes like we usually do, trying to ignore what's going to happen today.

After breakfast, I helped my mom clean up the table.

I heard them before I saw them. My mom turned ghostly pale as she could also hear them, they howled upon their arrival.

The warriors were here to collect us.

My parents and I exchanged glances before they hurried me out of the door, they didn't want to delay so as not to upset the warriors.

Everyone was already waiting outside, some shaking in fear, some emotionless as they had already accepted their fate and few looked determined like me.

Some warriors were in human form standing by a carriage while the other warriors shifted back to their human form.

One stepped forward, he must be a captain I assumed, cleared his throat then began with a booming voice.

“As you all know today is the selection,” a pause to let it sink in. “all humans from the age of 18 should step forward. Do not run or try to hide or else there would be consequences. We will begin to call your names, you should all have packed your things as we would not be wasting any time here today. You will come with us with or without your luggage if you try to waste time, whether you like it or not.”

A cold hand clasped unto mine, I turned and saw my best friend, Silvia Graves, we grew up together. I could feel her shaking so I sqeezed her hand and offered her a little smile to reassure her.

The air was thick with tension and filled with an eerie silence, not even the birds dared to make a sound. The only sound that could be heard was the nervous breathing around me and the sound of crushed snow underneath our boots.

“We will begin,” the captain announced, his voice cold and sharp. “Mara Primrose.”

She stepped out, her face was pale and she was visibly shaking.

“Darren wood….” I block out his voice turning to take one last look at my home. This was my life.

Soon, Silvia's hand leaves mine as she was called.

I felt an urgent tap on my hand as I was pulled out of my thoughts, my father had tapped me. He had gone pale, eyes wide and was shaking.

Everyone was looking at me with the same fearful expression on their faces.

What's going on?... I thought to myself

Ava's pov Whilst I had been observing my house the warrior had called out my name twice and I didn't hear him. All the villagers were looking at me eyes wide, whispers could be heard as they all feared for her safely Turning I locked eyes with the warrior, his gaze was piercing. His eyes were cold, expression unreadable but promised trouble. “I called your name twice,” he said, bearing his fangs. I stepped forward, steps slow and unhurried. I refuse to be intimidated. I held his gaze, no remorse or apology, if something bad was going to happen it would happen on my own terms. “Ava Sinclair, I said I called your name twice.” He repeated, his voice low as if he was daring me to challenge him. “And now I've heard it.” I retorted, keeping my voice steady even though my heart was pounding. I will never be weak before them. Collective gasp could be heard. The warrior took a step towards me and I heard the villagers behind me take a step back. I will not be intimidated, I will not

Ava's pov)The trip from silver claw pack to Blackthorn was expected to take three days. I have never left the pack's boundary as it wasn't particularly safe for humans to travel. The trip was a bumpy one, we were all cramped in so I occasionally got an elbow to the side or a stomp on my feet. Sleeping was difficult, I'd place my head on one of Sylvia's shoulders to sleep and she'd do the same with me.We weren't let out of the carriage all through the trip. During the three days we spent on the road, a warrior would come to open our door three times a day to give us meals. At least they didn't starve us…I thought. They would also bring us out twice a day to do our business, although we were blindfolded. As I woke up today the ride was silent, I didn't hear the usual chatter of the warriors. The air was warm, meaning that we were far from the north. The warmth, body heat and the heavy layers of winter clothing we all had on made inside the carriage a burning furnace. My clothes are d

Xander's povStepping out of the office with Rowan and Magnus flanking my sides, I'm greeted by warriors stationed in the hallway, omegas and human servants alike going about their daily task.Looking out one of the windows in the hallway I spot the carriages that have brought the humans. The humans were being led out by warriors from each carriage.I spot a flash of silver hair belonging to one of the humans from the silverclaw pack. A female. Something about her drew me in, I couldn't see her face yet as she seemed to be shielding her eyes from the sun.A throat cleared, it was Magnus signaling that we should keep moving. Pulling myself away from the window we continued on our journey down.Upon getting to the ground floor where the throne room was situated, my ears picked up the sound of something or someone being dragged, there was some sort of struggle.Magnus, Rowan and I all shared a look. Could it be a human? That was impossible, they all feared us and dared not to even breath

Ava's povThere was something about the way he was looking at me, it sent a tingling sensation through my body. My soul felt ignited, my heart was racing. What is going on?... I thought to myself. His eyes strayed away from my face and began scanning him. My face was flaming hot, his eyes were undressing me, smearing heat across my skin. This isn't me. Is this some new skill they have acquired? Bewitching humans to make them comply?...I thought to myself. Finally, after what felt like an eternity but was actually a couple of minutes, his gaze left my body and went back to the captain.“State your name, pack and rank.” The king ordered. The captain straightened his spine and went into full warrior mode.“Captain Rhysand Ryker of stormfang pack.” The captain stated.“Rhysand Ryker, noted.” I muttered under my breath.“Well, captain. Do you care to explain the ruckus you just caused at my castle.” The king asked, face dead serious and tone sharp.I heard captain Ryker suck in a deep bre

Ava's povI could feel eyes on me, more murmurs erupted, everyone was just as confused as I was.Why her? Why the sudden change of heart? What about his mate? Did the human do something to him…a mixture of voices could be heard, I was overwhelmed.“Enough!” The king ordered, his voice ringing in the throne room. Immediately the room became silent as though there weren't any people in it.“You, Ava Sinclair, I have chosen to be my personal entertainer.” He said, gaze locked with mine.I couldn't believe my ears. It's common knowledge that the king has never had a personal entertainer as he has been saving himself for his mate whom he has been searching for, for what felt like an eternity. At this point I wish the ground would just open up and swallow me whole. I said silent prayers in mind to whatever supreme being that was listening to let this either be a joke or a dream. Let the king either laugh at me and call it a jest or let me wake up because this can't be happening.I wasn't ju

Ava’s pov“This will be your quarter.” The king said behind me.Turning, I glanced up at him then asked. “Why?”He understood what I was asking. Usually servants live together in shared quarters, so having my own room in a different wing in the castle was rather strange.“You're my personal entertainer, meaning you are under my care and protection now. You will serve me alone, no one else. Hence, you require a certain accommodation.” He said with an unreadable expression. “You are a royal entertainer, not a common one, so you will have some things differently.”“Royal entertainer, not a common one” is that supposed to make me feel better? Me being a slut for the king… I thought in disgust.“Care and protection?” I repeated in disbelief. “Is that what you and your people call this? Taking us away from our families, forcing us to be your servant, forcing me to be your—” I couldn't even bring myself to say it.His jaw tightened, expression turning deadly at the disrespect. I simply overreacted.” I told them.“Are you sure? You sounded desperate, alpha.” This time it was Draven who spoke.“Don't question my decision!” I yelled at them growing irritated at their hesitance. “When I give an order you follow, it's as simple as that.”I stood up and dropped the girl on the floor and watched as she bled, something tugged inside me but I chose to ignore it. It was twisted. A funhouse reflection of the world I knew. Was this the truth? A vision? A warning?Or…My heart pounded violently in my chest as my legs gave out from under me. I fell to my knees on the stone floor, staring at the ground as if it might split open and swallow me whole. Then the realization hit me.It wasn’t real.None of it.I looked back up at the people I had just seen—people whose faces had changed, who had grinned and had wrong shadows—and now… they were normal again. Whole. Familiar. The same as always.I gasped. “No… no, no, no…”It wasn’t real.It wasn’t real.I stumbled back, shaking my head as the panic started to claw its way through my throat. “It isn’t real. IT ISN’T REAL!” I screamed, so loud it echoed through the forest.Doors slammed open.Boots rushed towar

I tried helping in the kitchens. Volunteering for patrol. Sitting through meetings I was no longer welcome in.Nothing worked. No one wanted me around them.I was a ghost in a home I had helped fight for.The days passed like the wind—fast and untouchable. I drifted through them like a ghost.Nobody spoke to me unless they had to. Even then, it was clipped, formal, laced with suspicion and caution. Conversations that used to warm up rooms now stilled when I walked in. Smiles I used to see daily became vacant stares—or worse, side-eyed glares.I didn’t blame them.Elder Maris had been a guide to them, a beacon. She’d walked with w

Again.I thought I had gotten rid of Zerathos' hold on me so I was very confused by the shadows tormenting me.Or is it all just in my head?I didn't know. It was driving me crazy.Every time I closed my eyes, I would see a shape in the dark. A flicker at the edge of reason. A whisper that wasn't by voice. And tonight, it showed me something that I couldn't escape. It started with smoke— it was thick, black, and curling like serpents across the ground. I was standing on a cracked path of scorched earth, the sky a scary swirl of red and grey. The air hummed like something alive.I didn't know this place but something in me said I did.Death Hollow. It whispered. The forbidden wasteland where no life grows. Where bones sink into the black soil and never rise again. Wh

Ava's povWar doesn’t end in a day. But neither does peace begin in one.It has been three days since Zerathos vanished.Three days since we watched his monstrous army retreat into the mist, leaving behind scorched earth, broken trees, a pile of bodies, the smell of blood and rot and the faintest echo of something dangerous whispering in the wind.We had returned to the Ashville main pack to regroup, heal, and mourn. The war council met daily. The injured filled the infirmary. My magic was slowly coming back as the days passed. Our warriors were tense, always half-listening, always watching the tree lines. But there’s something worse than fear in the air.Something wrong that had plagued me since the day of the first battle. And I could feel it clawing at me like a cold hand pressed against the back of my neck.I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air, heart pounding like I’ve been running. Zerathos' povThey think they’ve won.How foolish.War doesn't end when someone retreats. Not for those who breathe war. They thought my vanishing act was surrender. That my army fading with me was a sign of loss. But they misunderstood the game entirely. You don’t conquer a kingdom by brute force alone—you break its spirit, fracture its foundation, and wait for the cracks to show and watch everything crumble as they scramble to save what is beyond repair. The moment I faded from the battlefield, I felt the wave of their false relief like a sweet smell in the wind. It made me smirk at their naiveness. A dream. It was the normal way a prey always relaxes when the predator steps away… forgetting that sometimes, the beast only backs off to sharpen its claws.I stood at the top of the cliffs of Death Hollow now, the wind howling in the air, the sky was bleeding, the earth soaked with death, black mist curling at my feet. The death hollow was a little realm I had crafted for myself. Below

The battle was over…for now but it didn’t feel like a victory. It felt like a pause. A line right in the middle of a war that hadn’t even shown us its worst yet.All around me, bodies lay scattered like fallen birds—our warriors, his Shadow slaves and everything in between. Some would never rise again. Others would carry the scars forever. My heartbeat echoed in my ears, the only sound I could hear over the rush of adrenaline still coursing through my veins.Xander stood a few feet from

Ava's pov The moment the black mist erupted from the ground, I knew that things were about to get much worse. It was reeking badly. The ground cracked open beneath our feet like a wound splitting wide, and from it, the shadows poured, thick and choking, whispering in voices I couldn’t understand. Zerathos was coming. And I wasn’t ready, it was too soon. But I had to be. I knew that if I had continued to wait in blackthorn, I would never fully be ready. Now, regardless I was already here and needed to get things together and end this. I turned, eyes widening as I sensed something coming. "Shields!" I screamed, summoning my light magic and making a dome flare out around us, golden and humming with energy just as a blast of shadows shot out from the crack on the floor and hitting the barrier with so much force that the forge shook. We stumbled. Xander caught me by the elbow, his arm strong, steady. His eyes locked onto mine for half a second stormy gray-golden eyes c
