“We are almost there,” Bella says for the tenth time, but none of us seem to be buying it anymore.
Eddy grunts, “You’ve said that countless times, we’ve been walking for two hours, it’s getting dark and I’m sure the kids are tired."
“I’m not tired,” Joan says in her low pitch voice.
“Me too, just relax, we are almost there,” Mike says, sounding assuring.
A low growling sound echoes, bringing us to a halt but Bella keeps moving. “Don’t worry, there’s no way they’ll get here.”
“How sure are you?” Eddy asks as we keep walking.
“Zombies can’t swim, they can’t climb, and they don’t sleep.”
“I never knew Zombies don’t sleep,” Larry says.
Bella shrug, “I’ve never seen a sleeping zombie.”
Shortly after, se stop in front of a large hollow space inside a mountain.
Bella pulls out a torch which hardly bright up the darkness. As scary as the dark cave may appear, Joan and Mike seem not to be frightened. I wonder how these kids are coping in this new scary world.
Mike and I had a little discussion while we were walking and his story sounds disheartening. It’s tough to see one’s parent bitten and scared by ones mother’s claw in an attempt to run.
Mike may look small but he's gone through what no child should ever go through. Luckily he found Bella who’s now his guardian angel.
“Here we are,” Bella says as we come out of the dark cave, stopping in front of a red iron door.
Bella knocks the door which echoes loudly.
“Password?” A voice from the other side says.
Bella scoffs “Ben, I don’t have time for this.”
The door lock clicks and slowly opens.
A teenage blonde boy stares at us as we step in, looking closely at him, one could imagine the horror he’s been through. The fact that his left eye is gone and a carved wood replacing his feet up to the ankle. His facial smile on sighting us seem to bother me.
“Who are they?” Matt ask Bella as she steps in beside him.
“They saved us,” Mike cuts in.
“Really,” Matt says as he shuffles towards us, one after the other, he gives us a light handshake. “I’m Matt, nice to meet you.”
“I’m Xiao,” I reply as he shakes me.
“Are you Chinese?” he asks.
I reply with a slight nod and Matt smiles showing his upper teeth.
“Let’s get inside, our guest needs some rest.” Bella says.
“..And they are hungry too,” Joan adds as we walk into a building filled with kids running around, giggling and calling each other names.
They all quiet down as we step in, with smile on their faces, they rush to Bella throwing themselves on her. It’s funny how these kids seem to forget that their guardian is just few years older and probably still a teenager.
“Ok, that’s enough guys,” Matt says, then he turns to the old wall clock, “Who’s hungry?”
Matt pours milk into a bowl of cocoa cereal, handing it to me with a smile as usual. With twenty kids in the room, I wonder how Bella manage to care for them all. She seem to have some kind of leadership qualities that makes the kids look up to her.
A roar of laughter echoes as the kids discuss amongst themselves. Their voices are so low as they continuing whispering. Ever since the Pandemic struck, I’ve only seen few kids, mostly kids who aren’t smiling anymore, but these ones seem happy than any usual kid in a normal world.
“Excuse me,” A little black girl in low cut says as she sits beside me. She turns to look at me.
“Is it true that all Chinese can fight, my daddy once said that they can.”
I rub her hair and place my hand on her shoulder, “Fighting isn’t in here…” I point to her hands, “It’s in here,” I place my hand on her chest, "Most human can fight, but it depends how fast your mind speaks to your fist. And of course, a number of Chinese knows k****u, but over the years we’ve adopt other martial arts like Karate from Korea, Samurai sword fight from Japan, Taekwondo from the Korea, jiujitsu form Shangai, Taichi k****u from China, Capoeira and Vale-tudo from Brazil, also Kendo from Japan.”
The little girl eyes widens, “Woah, that’s a whole lot of martial art.”
“There’s more.”
“Really? Teach me Kung fu.”
“It’s not that easy as it seems on Tv” I try to explain but she insist. Knowing that I’ll be gone tomorrow, I’d better not make promises that I can’t fulfill”
“Ok, Cynthia..Time to go to bed,” The little girl frowns immediately Matt calls her name.
The kids leave the room then Bella leads us to a large room that used to be a cold room until she transformed it into a bed room hoping that she’ll find more people to occupy it.
“Goodnight guys,” Bella says as she turns to leave.
“Where are you off to?” Larry asks as he lays on the mat.
“Someone has the watch the night. Matt turn was yesterday, today is my turn.”
I stand up and pick a book beside me, “I’ll come with you.”
“You need to rest.” She says.
“You also need to rest,” I say.
Bella nods, “Ok, if you insist.”
I sit on the rooftop staring at nothing, then someone taps me in the back and hands over a cup of hot coffee. The smell of night coffee reminds me of my days at the University, I used to consume a lot of it before studying at night
“Thanks,” I say as Bella sits on the chair beside me.
“I have you to thank, you really did well today.”
I scoff, “You’ve also paid back in double.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever forgive myself if any of those kids die again.”
I pause and turn to look at her tear filled eyes.
“It’s ok,” I say, holding her hands.
“They used to be more than this, but I lost most of them in supply runs and some gets infected. I don’t know if I can keep up with this anymore.”
“Don’t say that,” I pull her closer and she sobs on my shirt. At that moment I realize she’s just a teenage with an heavy burden.
“Sorry,” she scoffs and pulls away from me, “sometimes I get too emotional.”
“It’s fine,” I say. “I guess the apocalypse changed a lot of things.”
“Yeah,” Bella says, staring at her bow.
“May I?” I reach for her bow and she nods. Staring at the beautiful stainless black bow, I admire it's design. "What's FAC?” I ask, staring at the word written on it.
“French Archery Championship. I won the award two years before the whole zombie saga. My coach and I arrived at this island with some other young players. When we were done, we called for a chopper to take us back but none arrived, not until a ship filled with zombies arrived at the shore. By the time we realize what’s going on, a lot of lives were lost and lots of people gets infected.
“I was able to gather some kids and rescue others. Matt lost his leg trying to save his friend but he got stuck in a rubble of a collapsed building with a zombie who poke Matt’s eye with it’s claw. I saved Matt and I had to shoot his zombie friend who already pull out Matt’s eye. It was a gory thing to behold.
We found this place filled with abundant groceries. It Seems to be an abandoned warehouse, and we decided to stay here with the protection it offers. Though, we haven’t had any zombie attack here, but I still don’t want to let my guard down.”
“Wow, you’ve been through a lot, Thankfully you are safe now.”
Bella scoffs. “Save? Those zombies can penetrate any place, it’s just a matter of time, I just hope we’ll be able to last longer here,”
Bella drifts to silence and I turn my gaze to the gate, staring at nothing in particular. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no way a zombie will get in here. By the time I turn to look at Bella again, she’s already fast asleep. Slowly, I lay back on the chair and my eyes shut gradually until a peaceful deep sleep takes over.

Chapter one — Rude awakeningThe sudden exposure of the room's light almost blind my eyes. Instantly, I shut my eyes for a while, trying to figure out how I got to this place. The only thing I remember is the creak sound of the trunk. After a while of failed reminiscing, I decide to get up, but it seems like there's no leg attached to me at all, did I lose my legs? I asked myself before pulling the sheets, luckily It's still there but numb. Slowly, my cold limbs begin to come alive, and finally, I'm able to wiggle my toes after hours of attempting.I look around, trying to see if I'll be able to get out. Steadily, I got up but as soon as my foot touch the floor, I dropped. My lower limbs aren't ready to move yet, for the meantime I keep my eyes busy with studying the room. The painted white walls, with several x-ray posters on it. I turned to see a computer monitor beside me beeping, I studied the slopes
“May day! May day!! May day!!!” A hard blow on my head woke me up from a horrible nightmare, my eyes were sleepy heavy despite the blood dropping from my head, it took a while for me to realize that we're still in the chopper. “I've lost control!” The pilot shouts. Quickly, I grab my bag and fasten the straps. The chopper jerk again and this time it slammed me to the metal floor. My nose bleeds but as I tried to stand up, someone held me. “Don't stand, or else you'll fall again” I turned to the person who just spoke, but due to the blur vision, I couldn't see clearly. “Everyone, grab what you can, we're about to land”. The pilot announced again. Suddenly, a loud bang jerk the chopper again, but everyone already laid down waiting for the rough landing metal door suddenly burst open making t
I eject my empty magazine, my hands were shaking, and my palms were sweaty as I reach for my pocket to get more magazine. The splattered blood on my face made it difficult to mount the fifteenth magazine, as I couldn't see clearly. As soon as I shove the magazine beneath the handle, I aim my gun at a zombie dashing towards me, it dropped as soon as it got closer. Eddy shoots it in the head.“Don't be floppy, aim for the head!” He shouted before turning to shoot another one.I turned left and shoot at a shabby looking female zombie repeatedly trying to aim for her head, with every bullet fired at other spots seems less effective, until my bullet finally lodged in her skull. The Zombies didn't stop coming, despite killing them, they don't seem to end.The banging at the door become intense as time pass by, the door isn't going to hold on any longer, the concrete walls around it are beg
Chapter four — The predator.“I got this”.Xiao pulls her sword and throws the sheath aside, the zombie stare at her as she lunges forward steadily with her blade pointing straight at it. She makes her first strike, but the zombie swayed slightly and grip the blade of the sword. Blood drops from his palms, but the zombie keeps staring blankly, she tries to pull it, but her effort seems fruitless . As soon as she let go the zombie holds her arm, Strenuously, the zombie twisted the blade and broke it into half, in a split seconds, he shoves the other half into Xiao's neck, and kicks to the ground.Xiao wrap her hands around her neck as blood spurt out of her mouth.“Xiao!”Mel scream, and pulls out her dagger, the zombie sights her with the corner of his eyes. He darts his arm forward to cut her with its claws, but Mel slide under his arm, then she stabbed him on the neck. The zombie froze as blood oozed
“All clear”. The scout drone flies out of the supermarket window, as soon as it lands, Larry shove it into his bag. The supermarket door is an automated glass door, strong and large. “Are you sure there's no one inside?” Eddy asks. Larry shook his head. “I scouted every corner.” “How do we get in?” Xiao asks. “Through the window like the drone” I say. Larry chuckled “The window is too small for people to fit in, this door It's an automated door, and now that there's no power supply, it'll be difficult to get in.” Mel corks her rifle.” Then we'll just shoot our way in” Larry move away from the door and gunshots echo severally but nothing change, the door is still erect, despite several shots. “This is such a thick one,” I say as I placed my hand on the glass. Mel's bullet did not even leave a dent on it. “Step back!” We all move
Chapter six- Plan gone wrong.Daywalkers are sensitive to light, Nightwalkers are sensitive to sound and smell combine with aggressiveness, but the Predator's formidability is what makes it stands out. Just as planned, we stay far away from the barracks then Larry launched the first explosive decoy which is supposed to attract the Predator. After the loud blaring noise.“Are you sure it's going to come?” Mel asks as we all watch the gate from a hill, afar.Eddy peered through the binocular. “Sure, we just have to wait”.We all bent down as soon as we heard a rustling sound approaching. The animalistic growl and swift movement cannot be mistaken. The sound begins to fade after a while. We hurry down into a pit then Larry's drone took off. While in the pit we watch the footage capture by the drone from above, the progressive movement of the Predator into the barracks. It
Chapter sevenMel hiss and shut her eyes in pain as the hydrogen peroxide foamed on her wound. Her right fist clench tightly on my arm as I swab pieces of flesh out of it.“Ahh, this hurt as hell!” she yells.I feel her heart racing when she sights the iodine solution in the first aid box.“Are you ready for this?” I asked as I opened the small blue bottle. She shook her head and adjust her posture. “Let's get on with it”.I pour the solution on a cotton wool, mistakenly spilling half of it, then I dip it slowly into her wound, she jerks immediately responding with a loud grin, clenching her fist. I pulled out the blue wool tainted with blood and fleshy particles.Mel sighs in relief. Her face is covered in sweat, she looks weak like someone who's been battered, her eyes are red and bugled.“It's not done yet”.

. A moaning sound hit my ear, jolting me from whatever I was thinking about. "Shit!" I shout before raising my gun to shoot the zombie who's just some inches away from me. Blood stains my face as a bullet riddle through the zombie's head from behind. It collapses with his head striking my boot and blood tainting it. "You don't let a zombie get too close to you," Eddy advice before pulling the trigger again.I hear a loud thud behind me but I never bother to check what it is. I aim at a zombie crawling towards us. Its legs are missing, like he got ran over by a vehicle. It kept groaning as slimy saliva drips from it's mouth to the floor. As soon as it get close enough to grip Eddy, I fire my gun and the bullet land on its skull. Eddy sights it and quickly look away from its messy head then he turns to me. "Let's go help larry."***************** The grinding sound of chainsaw suddenly stops as Larry cut through a zombie into half. His body is extremely soak with zombie blood whi
TGV 12 I slam the door behind me as soon as Ben rush in. After making sure the door is lock, I turn to ben who's laying on the bed. His hand is wrap with a piece of clothing, with sweat all over his face as he turns to me. "Ji-li, you are alive." he says as I sit beside him while Becky hands a cup of water to him. My first name is actually Ji-li but people from the east prefers to call me by my surname Xiao, mostly because Chinese surname comes before the first name, Xiao Ji-Li, that's my name. "Your hand, it's wounded" Becky says as she collect the emptied cup from him. He seems to be very tasty judging from the way he gulps the whole content at once. "What happening?" I ask, hoping to get an answer. "I don't really know, it's hard to explain," he says. "What about the others?" Becky asks but Ben remains silent for a while. "They are all dead" he finally manages to speak.Becky gasp. "How?" She ask with her eyes widened and her hands on her mouth.Ben sits up then he continu
The blaring sounds of the rock music from the speakers began to bore me. I wondered why everyone is so excited about such disturbing noise. The twitching bulbs and the dark room makes it diffcult for me to shove my way past the hippy crowd, I almost reach the exit when she stands in front of me. "Look who's leaving the party" she says. If not for Becky who convinced me on before that day I wouldn't be in such a rowdy place. "I have to get back to my room" I said as I tried to move past her. "Come on, the party just started" she said. "You know I don't do this, and besides I have-" She quickly sipped her drink and throw it aside. "You don't have any excuses, you have run out of excuses." She moved closer to me, placing both hands on my shoulders. "We are done with school bullshit, now we have to celebrate, tonight is our night, let's celebrate." Becky pulled me to the crowd and she began to dance as usual but this wasn't my thing. At the university I have always been an hermi
Chapter ten - The Departure.A root tip me again, but Mel quickly pulls me before I hit the ground. We with our hearts in our mouth, the predator isn't stopping either.“Ready to jump” Mel says as we approach a small stream in front. At once, we jump and land at the other side, the predator growl fuels up my strength and will to keep running.I pull Mel's collar as she almost falls off a cliff, I guess she didn't see the signboard miles away.“Oh Jesus!” she shouts as I squeeze my fist on one side of her collar. We both stand close to the steep. The cliff is distant from the ground, with rocks at the bottom. Jumping is a wrong choice, though it's the first option that comes to my mind.“This is too deep to jump,” Mel says as she watches a piece of stone fall from the cliff.“It's either we jump or the predator kills us,” I sa
Chapter nine.We jerk away as soon as the hungry-looking creature leap from the Van.It's strange seeing an infected animal, so fierce and brutal. The four feet hairy dog with scars all over its body steps forward, its left eye is missing while the right bloodshot eyes stared at me in rage. Its teeth appear to be disorderly arranged, but looks sharp and deadly. The devilish giant Pitbull growls angrily like it's about to tear something apart, with its sticky liquid dropping from its mouth. I raise my gun slowly then it leans backwards, and slightly bending its thin legs, ready to charge. With the corner of my eyes I sight some night walkers down the dark road hurrying towards us, the earlier gunshot must have attracted them.“You take the night walkers while I take care of this beast” I say to Mel without turning to looking at her, my eyes are fixed on the zombie dog in front of me.As
Chapter eight.Blood sploshes out of the thin tattered zombie's chin, it froze immediately I push the knife into its head. Congealed blood flush out as I pull out the knife, it lumbered to the ground with its face bury into the soft soil.Mel grunts as she pulls out her dagger out of a zombie's throat, blood squirted out of its throat as it groan in pain. Quickly, she snapped it neck in order to get it out of its misery. It's been hours since we left the cabin, and we've encountered some handful of daywalkers. One thing that baffles me is how the nightwalkers manage to hide quickly away from the sun, one can't mistakenly run into them during the day. I pulled out my knife, wiping off the blood using the zombie's tattered suit, carefully, sliding my knife into my waists sheath.“We have to find somewhere to spend the night” Mel says as she walks past me.The day seems to be getting darker than usual, nighttime isn't the best time to
