Layla had led them from their room that morning. Maverick and Alec had just finished dressing when the bubbly woman had knocked on their door. She had said that she couldn’t let them stay cooped up inside their room while she could show them the beauty of their pack.
“Is it really necessary that you come and get us so early in the morning?” Alec had grumbled, and Layla bopped her head.
“Of course. It is absolutely necessary. You people have already woken up and gotten dressed, and all you would do is stare at your phones and laptops in your room before we had to talk again at the meeting.” She replied with a wide smile.
“And does it have to be only us? There are others too.” Alec said, and Layla rolled her eyes at him.
“You are the ones I find most likable among them all, except for that beautiful brunette and her sidekick, of course, but a woman must get her beauty sleep. I heard she’s the pack's doctor. She must have a lot on her hands already, poor thing must study till late at night.”
“A woman gets her beauty sleep and a man doesn't?” Alec asked, and Layla groaned.
“Fuck, I’m beginning to like only this Alpha of yours here. He’s the only decent man around.” Layla said, not hesitating to make it obvious she was checking the man out with her eyes. But Maverick hardly noticed, as he had been staring out through the numerous windows in the hallway.
Even though it had been early, the people of the pack were already up and about, the ladies smiling, giggling, frowning, and drooling at the men who were training in the field.
“Honestly, I don’t know why Aurora doesn’t just claim him and enjoy him for the rest of the night. I wouldn’t let him out of my sight if I knew he was my mate. Your Alpha is such a fine specimen.” Layla fawned, and Alec rolled his eyes at her.
“Finally, someone with brains. But it’s alright that she’s keeping her distance from us anyway. I don’t think I can really tolerate her.” Alec said, glancing at the dark rose with thorns tattoo that had woven its way around Layla’s hand.
“Don’t speak bad of her. She’s always been like that. There had been a lot of handsome men here who came for alliances but ended up wanting to be with her. Hell, someone had even gone to war with us because of it.” Layla said, flipping her blue hair behind her back because it had been too close to her black eyes, lined with black eyeliner that stood boldly against her pale face. “But our dear witch just turns them away with the flick of her wrist. She doesn’t do love. In fact, she doesn’t do men. There are only a select few that can get close to her.” She explained.
“I suppose Easton is part of those selected few,” Maverick asked with a tinge of bitterness in his tone, and Layla shook her head.
“Nope. Easton is practically her, and she is him. He can do anything to her. She trusts him more than life itself. Before you came, half the pack had assumed they would just end up together.” Layla answered Maverick, staring at him with a glint in her eyes. It had only been fitting that he was the man who had turned Aurora’s feelings on and off. She had always wanted to meet the man who had ruffled Aurora’s feathers so much, and she hadn’t been disappointed when she met Maverick.
“Of course, he can do ‘anything’ to her,” Maverick said under his breath.
They all stopped when they had reached the balcony that overlooked half the space of the whole pack, and they became speechless.
“Surprised, huh?” Layla asked.
Over the years, they had heard over and over again that the Night Pack had been a dangerous, deserted, and boring place that one needed to be careful in. The men there caught other werewolves, the women cooked them, and the whole pack had had them for breakfast. They always carried a dangerous weapon or two with them, and they had given some to their children right at birth. Once you got your wolf, you had to get a long scar that ran down your spine as initiation into the pack, then you had to kill another werewolf from a different pack to prove your worth.
There had been a lot of horrible news over the years, which made them amazed when they saw the beautiful valley in front of them. With green fields, the sun peeked over the tree line, providing natural light that surrounded the beautiful structure of the pack. The modern bungalows and duplexes expanded outward, complementing the deep forest behind. There was a lake with birds on the surface, reflecting the clear blue sky.
There was humming and bustling of the people going about their daily activities below them.
Everything was so different from what they had heard. The pack seemed even more normal, more carefree, and more humane than any other werewolf pack.
“Are you sure these people are all rogues?” Sadie said beside them, her hazel eyes pinned ahead. The woman looked fresh out of the shower and must have joined them recently.
“Yeah, all of us are rogues. Some people here are from all those big and small packs that had set us apart because of the little differences they couldn’t tolerate. Of course, there are some who have left by themselves, and we’re all different in our own ways. But in a way, a sense, we’re still the same. All of us have gone through the same thing—pain.” Layla replied ruefully, a small sad smile on her lips. “We aren’t as monstrous and huge as most people make us out to be. We just find strength in the fact that we don’t want to let them tear this little comfort—the haven we’ve managed to find—apart. And of course, we have our dear witch to keep us all going. Aren’t I right, Hilton?”
They all turned to look at Hilton, who had been standing behind them, and the man nodded with a small smile on his face.
“I’ll get you to our lake house, Sadie. I’m sure you’ll like it! It’s honestly the best part of this place!” Layla said, and Sadie nodded before letting herself be dragged away by the blue-haired woman. She had some questions to ask her anyway.
“What would you like to do in the meantime? I’m sure this pack has almost everything to offer. Not in large quantities like you’re used to, but I’m sure there’s quality.” Hilton said, with a smile perched on his lips.
“We’d like to hit the gym or the training room, whatever you guys call it here,” Maverick said, and Alec nodded.
“Then come on, the training room isn’t going to come here by itself.”
---
“This private room can be used for the training you want,” Hilton said calmly, and they muttered their thanks to the only man who seemed to have all the patience and tolerance in the world.
He opened the door for them, and they entered the extra-large room. He then turned and walked away since he had other things to deal with.
Half of the room had been a training area with punching bags, a wrestling stage, and other things, while the other part was a gym. They kept hearing the sound of shots being fired, so they went to check. They paused when they saw Aurora standing there with a gun in her hand, shooting at the target.
She had been dressed in black tight leather pants, a sleeveless crop top, and heavy black boots, headphones over her sandy hair that had been pulled back into a ponytail. One of her hands, adorned with black bracelets, had been in her pocket, while the other had held the gun, her onyx eyes focused on the target as she had fired the shots.
She looked so beautiful and different. There was no trace of the woman he had once known, but at the same time, there had been something familiar.
There had been rumors of an unknown rogue among the Night Pack who could fire wolfsbane from a distance without missing her target. No one had ever seen her, though.
Staring at her relaxed posture as she did this made them realize that not only could she cast spells and strengthen barriers on the field, but she was also skilled with a gun.
Maverick wondered if there was some sort of battle coming that the rogue pack had to face which made her train or if it was purely for leisure.
Aurora swiftly turned with the gun in her hand, aiming it at the presence she felt beside her, but she relaxed a bit when she saw that it was only Maverick and Alec. She lowered her gun and removed the headphones from her ear.
“Those were pretty nice shots,” Maverick said, staring at the target she had hit. Even Alec hadn’t been able to hide how amazed he had been.
“Thanks. It’s nothing,” she replied curtly. Things had been awkward between them. It had been one thing when they had been former mates, but now that they had realized they were still mates, it had been uncomfortable.
“Don’t worry, Aurora. I won’t reject you,” Mavericksaid quietly, Alec having disappeared into another part of the room, leaving only them standing there.
Aurora turned to stare at him, her eyes meeting his for a long moment before she looked away, rubbing her thumb against her index finger. She had nodded non-committedly, but Maverick was able to tell how relieved she had been by his words. He had always been able to read her like no one else, and though there were changes, some things still remained the same.
It was very obvious to him that Aurora couldn’t reject him because another rejection would end her life, but Maverick could still do that. Rejection would only weaken him and bind him to his territory within his pack, but he wouldn't have the same consequences as Aurora.
“It won’t do either of us any good, but I still appreciate you saying that, make sure you explain the situation exactly as it is, — a business cooperation— to you Luna,” Aurora said, emphasizing the word "Luna."
"Luna?" Maverick started to speak, but before he could get another word out, the door was slammed open.
“Aurora! Fuck, if I don’t miss you!” A man’s voice called from behind them. They turned to see a man hurrying toward Aurora. He didn’t spare Maverick a glance before he rushed to hug Aurora, burying his face in her neck and inhaling her scent as though it was a lifeline.
Maverick knew he wasn’t supposed to feel the blinding jealousy that had surged through him at that moment, hell, it wasn't even in his right.
If he had control of his emotions he wouldn't feel this feeling at all because it is rather something he doesn't want in the complicated relationship between Aurora and him, but it was hard to ignore.
It had taken everything in him to restrain himself from yanking the man off her, punching him, and throwing him out of the room. Maverick knew that it was wrong so he was going to put all his bets on his wolf being rampant.
Alec’s hand grinding on his shoulder had been the only thing that had kept him from acting on his impulses.
How hard could it be for someone to get over their feelings? The man had been taking far too long to move on.
“Fucking Zach delayed the documentation of the contract. Apparently, there was some glitch in the system, so Alpha Maverick and his representative had to stay a few more days. Tell your freaking Beta to act like one, Easton!” Layla snapped, her voice dripping with irritation. Aurora rolled her eyes at the drama queen, while Easton ignored her completely, engrossed in the video game on his phone.A lot had changed over the years, but not Easton’s love for games. He could sit with that phone from morning till night without growing bored. Hilton didn’t discourage him, either—in fact, he often joined in. Aurora often wondered how they managed to get anything done as the Alpha and Delta of the rogue pack.“Don’t you like their presence here?” Hilton asked casually, not even glancing up from where he sat, while Aurora sank comfortably into the beanbag.“I definitely don’t,” Easton muttered, earning a glare from Layla.“Of course you don’t, but I do. Why wouldn’t I like that hunk parading aro
Maverick stared at all the members of the supposedly ‘cruel’ pack and tried to pin that word with the image and actions of the people all around him, but it didn’t make any sense. They were all supposed to have scars when they tried to initiate themselves into the pack, hurting themselves for fun, but here they all were, gathered around a grown man who had tumbled in the field and hurt his toe, as if that wasn’t normal even for humans, let alone werewolves. But these people were rogues—the worst kind of werewolves. The first instinct of others when they saw rogues was to attack, and a lot followed that instinct. Then, they weren’t supposed to be offering sweet cookies to members of a rival pack, not supposed to get chummy with them. Neither were they supposed to be this happy about two of them finding their mates. They practically dragged them to build tents with them, cracking jokes like they had been buddies their entire lives. The kids here—rogues, werewolves, and hybrids—weren’t su
“It was late now, and they should just head back; there was no use staying around,” Layla said, and Aurora removed her hands from Kael’s when she was steady on her feet. She wasn’t going to accept help down the hill, and Kael understood that.“Thanks, Kael,” she said with a small smile, and Kael nodded with another smile of his own. He was happy to be of help, and the fact that she chose him instead of the asshole opposite already made him over the moon. She turned to Layla, and they both started to walk away.Maverick kept to himself since then, while Kael looked so proud of himself. Aurora had a blank expression, like she didn’t realize what she was doing, or maybe she didn’t care. But Layla never looked so pissed; she kept shooting glares at Kael, who straight up ignored them. They didn’t get the wild boar, and it was getting very dark, so everyone decided to listen to Layla.Aurora and Layla were the first to leave, hand in hand.Maverick wanted to just go to his room and sleep the
“Fortunately, no one was dead,” Sadie said, and everyone took a huge breath of relief. “But a lot were injured. The amount of major injuries alone was fifty-seven.” Sadie replied without mincing words. Easton came to stand beside Aurora and held her hands in his for comfort while Alec came to Maverick's side.“There were minor injuries?” Layla asked, and Hilda nodded.“A lot of that,” Hilda said.“But all of them needed treatment,” she glanced at the ruined clinic. “As soon as possible.”Kael and a man came out of the pack house. Maverick guessed that they must have gone to check the level of damage.“The situation was worse inside. The only place miraculously untouched was the main office. All the files were safe, but not the rooms. It couldn't be managed for the time being,” Kael informed, and Aurora sucked in a breath. They must have wanted to keep the members of the pack there for a bit until they tried to find a way, but they weren’t seeing anything.“The fire wasn't natural, righ
“You should absolutely not do that, Alpha!” Dan exclaimed in exasperation as soon as they were out of view of the others. Only the representatives from the Moonlight Pack were present now, apart from Sadie and Hilda, who were still tending to the injured in the field.Maverick merely glanced at him before turning his attention to the burnt buildings in the distance. The injured had been gathered under a tent in the middle of the field since the clinic had completely collapsed. Sadie worked diligently, moving from one person to the next. Maverick doubted she would have stayed back even if he had told her to. Her instincts as a doctor wouldn’t have allowed it. But he also knew it had more to do with the kind of person she was—so much like her father, the former pack doctor.“Have you thought this through?” Jared asked, his brows furrowed. Maverick glanced at him and nodded. He understood the outburst he had made earlier was just a flash of anger that would eventually simmer down.“It wou
“Thanks a lot for the protection, Aurora. I’m sorry that some bitch set your place on fire. Don’t forget to call me when you need help from my side,” a woman, the epitome of a lone rogue, said. Aurora nodded while the rest stood back and let them talk.“Why don’t you join us, Cali? It would be better if we moved together,” Aurora suggested, but the woman shook her head.“Nope. I prefer solitude. Don’t worry about me. How about this? When I think it’s time to settle in a place, you’ll be the first person I seek out,” Cali replied, and Aurora nodded again.“But you must tell us if you’re in danger or need our help too. It works both ways!” Layla hollered from the passenger seat as she sat beside Floyd. Cali chuckled before nodding.“Alright. I can do that. I’ll be on my way now,” she said before she shapeshifted into a brown wolf and darted into the forest.Vans had been sent from Moonlight Pack to help them get to their destination quickly. How they managed to organize such resources we
Aurora tensed against her will the moment they stepped inside the Moonlight Pack territory the next day. The images of her and Easton crossing the territory line years ago, battered, tattered, and bleeding profusely, flashed vividly in her mind. Their throats had been parched, their eyes drooping, and their bodies weak from exhaustion. The men had managed to fix the car and get it running again that morning, thankfully avoiding any rogue encounters along the way. It seemed the proximity to Moonlight Pack’s territory provided a lot of safety. She felt someone slip their hand into hers and turned to see Easton nodding at her with reassurance, though his eyes remained unreadable. She nodded back, squeezing his hand tightly.Kael glanced at them briefly before focusing his attention back on the road ahead. In a blink, they passed faces Aurora recognized—some altered slightly, others unchanged, even though the pack itself had undergone significant transformation. The once-humble surrounding
"Why the hell would Crystalbelle be after you?" Zach had asked, his brows furrowed in confusion. "We know she's envious of you, but she wouldn’t go this far just out of envy." Aurora had simply shrugged in response."If she knew, would she be here devising strategies to capture that bitch with all of us?" Layla had chimed in, rolling her eyes at Zach. He had only shaken his head, choosing not to respond to her sarcasm."Hilton’s already on it," Aurora had informed the group. "I got a signal from the west, and he volunteered to check it out. He should be back in a week or so.""I’ll put together a list of all those nonsensical packs trying to oppose us," Easton had added. "We’ll track down whoever leaked information to Crystalbelle." Aurora had nodded approvingly."I’d like it if you also compiled a list of witch covens," Aurora had said firmly. "I’m not leaving them out of this. They’re still sore about me rejecting their stupid organization. They might’ve turned to her to use her as a
Aurora sat on a steep rock as she stared into the water body that was in front of her, a jar containing the fetus and another small jar that coined some green swirling liquid that glowed lightly in the early evening light. It was the remedy for those controlled by the puppetry art, she had set off and practiced for a lot of time before she was finally able to get it, she had been worried that she might not be able to find a cure before the witches take action—who knew that she would do it right after that thought crossed her mind. She had just taken a minute to sit and assemble her thoughts, take a breather from the usual tension that seemed to be wrecking her body more nowadays. After she followed Maverick's words and started seeing both her and the other Aurora as one, she had been able to feel her on a very personal level.Sometimes, it even felt like they were one single person. Their thoughts align more and they are able to communicate better—it almost feels like a communication
The witches arrived at the entrance of Left Green Woods, but to their surprise, they didn’t have to enter the manor because Maverick was standing out and the Manor door was shut.He glanced at them and paid no more attention to them again, his posture and position suggest that he was waiting for them but his attitude suggested otherwise.Daphne furrowed her brows as she stared at the door. “Why the hell would he keep the door locked, there’s no way we are entering now. Master instructed that we mustn’t let him close the door at all cost.”Rosa rolled her eyes at the woman, she didn’t like her because she didn’t have a good relationship with the Mistress. “Man shut it locked before we even arrived at this place, I am sure that the master can’t blame us for it. The only thing left is for us to go back and report.”“Lycan King Maverick, we would like you to come with us,” one of the sages started but Daphne cut him off.“Don’t start, Ivy, you don’t tell people like him to come along calm
Phoebe stared around as she was being led towards the Mistress’s office, when she arrived at the entrance of the castle, she didn’t have to tell them about who she was before she was told to come along. It seemed that he had informed them that she was coming, she didn’t know why he didn’t tell them straight away but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for her.If she played her cards well, she would be able to turn everything in her own favor. The castle was fairly beautiful but also dark at the same time, it was a stereotypical dark place that one would expect a witch to live in. It seemed that this Mistress is such a cliché person. The man in front opened a door after knocking and fast enough, they were in the study and in the presence of the Mistress herself, there was also a lady standing by her side.Phoebe found a seat without being invited to sit in one, she studied the expression on the Mistress’s face and didn’t like it one bit, it was weird—but she couldn’t figure it out so sh
“Do you want to take a rest now? You have already worked hard since you found the books,” Maverick said, placing down a glass of milk beside Aurora.“Yeah, I should probably rest soon but there’s no way I can now, I want to gather all the facts I can get about the ways of producing the potion that can turn the potion back to normal people.”“You already found out about how to take care of the fetus and you have administered methods on it,”“Yeah,” Aurora hit her back on the chair softly. “Who knew that it was actually something as easy as finding essence fertilizer and using it on it raw? Turns out that the thing is not purely evil.” She mused.“That doesn’t mean that we should relax though, I am quite anxious about this master, he already ordered that they should turn me into a puppet. They are taking their sweet time which could only mean one thing,” she turned to glance at Maverick.“They are preparing something.”She nodded. “So I have to hurry.”“How are you supposed to get the p
A groan fell from her lips, followed by a pained grunt, she heaved heavily and tried to adjust her head to the darkness but she discovered that she wasn’t in a dark room, instead her head was covered by a dark cloth. She tried to move but she discovered that both her arms and legs were tied tightly—she had been abducted!Phoebe regulated her breathing and ease her body, preparing herself to recount the events that happened before she found herself at his place. She had spent quite some time at the spot where she hid, she made sure that the night had come before she set off. One, it would make her mate who might have been expecting her think that she was being stubborn and decided not to set off on that day again, two, she had better advantages at night—it would have been easier to deal with trouble she encountered on the way when her senses were all alerted. She had set off, walking carefully and examining everything and everywhere around her, she even made sure to be as careful as po
“You really do?” Aurora asked and Maverick nodded before he handed over a book that she didn’t know that he was holding. She collected the book from him and glanced at it for a moment before she turned to look at him.“What is this? Where did you get it?”“It is obviously a book and I got it from the training room.”She glared at him in anger before she moved closer to him but he only stepped away from her too. She raised the book in his face. “You obviously have this but you made me try every trick up my sleeve trying to open it when you have the answer? You are a jerk!” she yelled at him but he only rolled his eyes at her.“You might want to hurry,” he replied simply, she huffed and turned to open the book in her hand before she turned to stare at Maverick with surprised eyes.“You want me to use my blood? How am I supposed to do that?” He smirked before he provided a knife out of nowhere, she scoffed in disbelief. “I should cut myself?”“How else? Am I supposed to bite the blood ou
“Listen,” Mr. Brian’s voice started as soon as Phoebe descended the last step on the staircase, he was sitting in the living room and from the look of things, it was very obvious that he was waiting for her. Phoebe paused and regarded him with a blank gaze. “I don’t care whatever excuse you have, I have had it with you. You are going back to Blood Moon Pack today.”Phoebe remained silent, they would have this conversation the day before but when she came back from the hospital, his mother was nowhere to be found and Alec had assigned an important duty to her father.“I have arranged someone who would take you through the way to the pack, once you are out of the border of Moonlight Pack, the only thing you have to worry about are the puppets that would be lurking around,” her father continued regardless of her silence. “I have sought information from some members of the coven that I have good relationship with, they confirmed that the puppets have been reigned but regardless of it all
“I hope you aren’t feeling any pain again,” Sadie asked and Phoebe nodded with a blank expression on her face, she had collapsed as soon as she reached her room the day she met her mate and had extreme fever immediately, she was hallucinating the past events as if it was present and was breathing was erratic. Her parents had no choice but to bring her to the hospital and let Sadie attend to her personally. She was glad that it stopped their rants for a short time.Sadie furrowed his brows at her and stared at her in concern. Even though she didn’t get along with Phoebe, she couldn’t ignore a woman who seemed to be spinning down the depression path with a spiral, she bites her lips in contemplation.“Is everything alright?” She finally asked.“Does it look like it isn’t?” Phoebe replied, and Sadie just nodded in understanding, there was no way to force an answer out of someone who is not willing. She dusted her coat and dipped her hands in the pockets before she started making her way
The door opened and Mani stepped into the dark study that had only dim light at the moment, The Mistress was sitting behind her desk, she was flipping through a book that she got from the archived documents. She was trying to find out all she could about Crystabelle but she wasn’t getting anything through.Witches, no matter how powerful they might be, would have their records in the archives. It was a magic that no one has been able to find out its root, it would automatically record it, even the ones thousands of miles away or were just born or died. As long as you have some witch blood running through your veins you are down, but there was nothing showing up about Crystabelle, it was as if she didn’t exist at all.“What did you find out?” The Mistress finally asked her when she dropped the book down after a futile search.“There’s no way to be exact but she is at Moonlight Pack at the moment.”“Damn.” The Mistress sighed. “So there’s no way to track her movement.”“No.”“How is the
