Maverick gave a subtle mental nod when Layla pointed out that Aurora had been using a scent-masking spell since entering the room. It finally made sense. That was why he couldn’t smell her when she walked in or even now. But when Aurora muttered something under her breath, her scent broke through the spell, overwhelming his senses.
The scent hit him all at once—too much, too fast. She smelled like the ocean breeze, the kind that brushed against your skin while standing by the sea with a seashell in hand. It was a scent he had always liked.
For a werewolf like him, who spent most of his time in the woods, forests, and small towns, her scent was a welcome change. It calmed him. But as it teased his heightened senses, it awakened something deeper. His wolf stirred, thrilled by the possibility of finding another mate. Yet that joy dimmed almost instantly, replaced by anguish.
His wolf recognized her. This was the same soul that had once hurt them, the same one they had broken the bond with. A low, pained howl escaped his wolf, but Maverick kept his face impassive, his emotions hidden.
The flood of memories he had buried for years resurfaced. He saw a younger Aurora—her smile bright, her laugh loud and infectious—standing by his side, her hand in his as they ran through the woods. They had been inseparable back then, a relationship of passion and promise. The memory shifted, darkening, to the moment she left the pack with Easton, and the pain of their broken bond came rushing back.
His fists clenched at his sides and he wrestled with his wolf to get his emotions under control but his face remained blank.
“I don’t want to have anything to do with you, Alpha Maverick,” Aurora said, her voice firm and steady.
Maverick nodded slowly. “This mate bond is not going to change anything.”
Her words caused his wolf to grunt in discomfort, but it was the reaction of the room that truly broke the tense silence.
“What? They’re mates?” Sadie asked, her eyes wide with shock.
“Again? I’ve never heard of two former mates becoming second chances!” Hilda exclaimed.
“Are they going to reject each other like last time?” Floyd asked, but no one answered.
“That has to be the weirdest mate realization I’ve ever seen,” Jared muttered.
“Me too,” Owen agreed.
“Me three,” Layla added, shaking her head. “Normally, it’s all enthusiastic acceptance, dramatic rejections, or awkward stares. But these two? They’re just blank canvases, standing there like voodoo dolls.”
Her voice wasn’t hushed like the others, and the casual bluntness of her comment stood out in the tense atmosphere.
The representative of the rogue pack, still reeling from the revelation, finally spoke. “That’s… understandable. Let’s hope this doesn’t affect our dealings.”
Aurora scoffed at his suggestion, her expression sharp. “If you think it will, you’re already overthinking. We’ll remain diplomatic. You review your file, and I’ll review mine. We’ll meet tomorrow morning. Now, my delta will show you to your rooms for the night. Goodnight, Alpha Maverick.”
She rose from her seat, dismissing him with a curt nod, and walked out. The rest of her pack followed, save for Hilton and the gamma. Layla’s voice trailed behind, chatting Aurora’s ears off about her boldness in addressing her mate like that.
As Aurora stepped out of the room, Maverick caught a faint shimmer in the air behind her. A wisp of blue energy trailed her like a shadow. His wolf growled low in his mind.
Magic.
Aurora’s witch blood wasn’t just strong; it seemed untamed.
Alec leaned closer to Maverick and whispered, “Did you see that? Her magic’s slipping. Whatever she’s hiding, it’s bigger than just a broken mate bond.”
Maverick nodded, his mind racing. Aurora had always been powerful, and there had always been a dangerous edge to it, he knew that more than anyone else.
Meanwhile, inside the room, one of the rogue representatives approached Hilton. “Do you think she’ll last?” they asked quietly, glancing toward the door.
Hilton’s jaw tightened. “She’s stronger than she looks. You’d do well to remember that.”

“You need to convince her to become your Luna, Alpha,” Dan said the moment the room emptied.
Maverick turned to glare at him, his voice cold and cutting. “Who the hell do you think you are to tell me what to do?”
Dan flinched but stood his ground. Gary cleared his throat nervously, stepping in to speak. “We were already against coming here. Finding out their Alpha and witch are ex-members of our pack—rogues, no less—doesn’t help. How do people respect her now? I don’t understand it.”
He paused, glancing at Maverick and Alec, but neither of them responded. Their silence made him shift uncomfortably.
He continued, “If she becomes Luna, she’ll be under your control. That might stop her from planning against us. There is pressure from the rival pack already, we can't have them getting a whiff of this, you are already lucky enough that your mate just happen to be the woman no one can just up and go and kidnap, that's a big bad bonus Alpha~”
His dad was the one of the former elder when her father was still the Alpha and the man still had a lot against Aurora, he was also the one that ranted on and on about how unfit Aurora was to be the Luna and joined hands with Phoebe to find witches who broke their bonds too.
He and ‘his friends’ might have passed the position of the pack councils to their sons and daughters but these people were just puppets who got news back to them.
Fuck it if he would allow them to make the decision of what he do with his mate this time too, they did a lot of trampling around the last time.
Maverick had been trying to eradicate them but they were such a pain in the ass and he couldn't get rid of them all at once.
They were a huge apart of the pack too, so him, Alec, Floyd, Sadie and Hilda were drafting some plans, it was just supposed to be him and Alec but the rest found out, Floyd wanted some excitement and excuse to investigate the ‘wrinkling things’ and everyone knee how much Sadie hated them.
“And you think making her Luna would erase the grudge she holds against the pack that drove her out?” Alec scoffed, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Hilarious.”
“Get out,” Maverick said sharply, his patience wearing thin.
“You can order us out all you want,” Dan retorted, “but I’ve already informed my father about tonight. He’ll consult with the elders, and this will become a pack matter. If you don’t handle it, the pack will.”
He didn’t wait for a response, grabbing Gary by the arm and leaving the room.
---
“What are you going to do now, Maverick?” Alec asked softly once they were alone.
Maverick ran a hand over his face, his expression finally crumbling. Behind the safety of closed doors and his best friend’s understanding, he let his emotions show—confusion, anger, hurt, and exhaustion.
“I don’t know, Alec,” he admitted. “I don’t know.”
“Why don’t you just reject her and get it over with?” Alec suggested, his voice tinged with frustration. “I can see it in your eyes, Maverick. It’s the same look you had that night you ran through the woods after her betrayal. You’re hurting.”
It wasn't mate bond that was making him act this way, it barely had anything to do with that thing, they were even able to feel less since Aurora wolf was still barely at the surface.
It was weak naturally and the broken bond must have done nothing to help it.
His complex feelings had to do with all the buried tingles and strangles he buried deep, the complicated decisions and well thought brutal actions that came with no choices.
Were they going to go through that endless spin all over again?
Aurora clearly announced that they shouldn't deal with each other but unless they addressed the big elephant in the room, nothing would get easier.
It would only be a matter of months after he is back in his pack before he would start feeling post mate-withdrawal symptoms.
“I can’t do it again,” Maverick said quietly, leaning against the wall and pressing his head against his forearm.
“What can’t you do?”
“I can’t hurt her again. Another rejection will destroy her. I… I can’t.” His voice broke slightly, but he steadied himself.
“But she won’t even know what you’re sparing her from,” Alec argued, exasperated.
“It doesn’t matter,” Maverick said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’m used to it now.”
Layla had led them from their room that morning. Maverick and Alec had just finished dressing when the bubbly woman had knocked on their door. She had said that she couldn’t let them stay cooped up inside their room while she could show them the beauty of their pack.“Is it really necessary that you come and get us so early in the morning?” Alec had grumbled, and Layla bopped her head.“Of course. It is absolutely necessary. You people have already woken up and gotten dressed, and all you would do is stare at your phones and laptops in your room before we had to talk again at the meeting.” She replied with a wide smile.“And does it have to be only us? There are others too.” Alec said, and Layla rolled her eyes at him.“You are the ones I find most likable among them all, except for that beautiful brunette and her sidekick, of course, but a woman must get her beauty sleep. I heard she’s the pack's doctor. She must have a lot on her hands already, poor thing must study till late at nigh
“Fucking Zach delayed the documentation of the contract. Apparently, there was some glitch in the system, so Alpha Maverick and his representative had to stay a few more days. Tell your freaking Beta to act like one, Easton!” Layla snapped, her voice dripping with irritation. Aurora rolled her eyes at the drama queen, while Easton ignored her completely, engrossed in the video game on his phone.A lot had changed over the years, but not Easton’s love for games. He could sit with that phone from morning till night without growing bored. Hilton didn’t discourage him, either—in fact, he often joined in. Aurora often wondered how they managed to get anything done as the Alpha and Delta of the rogue pack.“Don’t you like their presence here?” Hilton asked casually, not even glancing up from where he sat, while Aurora sank comfortably into the beanbag.“I definitely don’t,” Easton muttered, earning a glare from Layla.“Of course you don’t, but I do. Why wouldn’t I like that hunk parading aro
Maverick stared at all the members of the supposedly ‘cruel’ pack and tried to pin that word with the image and actions of the people all around him, but it didn’t make any sense. They were all supposed to have scars when they tried to initiate themselves into the pack, hurting themselves for fun, but here they all were, gathered around a grown man who had tumbled in the field and hurt his toe, as if that wasn’t normal even for humans, let alone werewolves. But these people were rogues—the worst kind of werewolves. The first instinct of others when they saw rogues was to attack, and a lot followed that instinct. Then, they weren’t supposed to be offering sweet cookies to members of a rival pack, not supposed to get chummy with them. Neither were they supposed to be this happy about two of them finding their mates. They practically dragged them to build tents with them, cracking jokes like they had been buddies their entire lives. The kids here—rogues, werewolves, and hybrids—weren’t su
“It was late now, and they should just head back; there was no use staying around,” Layla said, and Aurora removed her hands from Kael’s when she was steady on her feet. She wasn’t going to accept help down the hill, and Kael understood that.“Thanks, Kael,” she said with a small smile, and Kael nodded with another smile of his own. He was happy to be of help, and the fact that she chose him instead of the asshole opposite already made him over the moon. She turned to Layla, and they both started to walk away.Maverick kept to himself since then, while Kael looked so proud of himself. Aurora had a blank expression, like she didn’t realize what she was doing, or maybe she didn’t care. But Layla never looked so pissed; she kept shooting glares at Kael, who straight up ignored them. They didn’t get the wild boar, and it was getting very dark, so everyone decided to listen to Layla.Aurora and Layla were the first to leave, hand in hand.Maverick wanted to just go to his room and sleep the
“Fortunately, no one was dead,” Sadie said, and everyone took a huge breath of relief. “But a lot were injured. The amount of major injuries alone was fifty-seven.” Sadie replied without mincing words. Easton came to stand beside Aurora and held her hands in his for comfort while Alec came to Maverick's side.“There were minor injuries?” Layla asked, and Hilda nodded.“A lot of that,” Hilda said.“But all of them needed treatment,” she glanced at the ruined clinic. “As soon as possible.”Kael and a man came out of the pack house. Maverick guessed that they must have gone to check the level of damage.“The situation was worse inside. The only place miraculously untouched was the main office. All the files were safe, but not the rooms. It couldn't be managed for the time being,” Kael informed, and Aurora sucked in a breath. They must have wanted to keep the members of the pack there for a bit until they tried to find a way, but they weren’t seeing anything.“The fire wasn't natural, righ
“You should absolutely not do that, Alpha!” Dan exclaimed in exasperation as soon as they were out of view of the others. Only the representatives from the Moonlight Pack were present now, apart from Sadie and Hilda, who were still tending to the injured in the field.Maverick merely glanced at him before turning his attention to the burnt buildings in the distance. The injured had been gathered under a tent in the middle of the field since the clinic had completely collapsed. Sadie worked diligently, moving from one person to the next. Maverick doubted she would have stayed back even if he had told her to. Her instincts as a doctor wouldn’t have allowed it. But he also knew it had more to do with the kind of person she was—so much like her father, the former pack doctor.“Have you thought this through?” Jared asked, his brows furrowed. Maverick glanced at him and nodded. He understood the outburst he had made earlier was just a flash of anger that would eventually simmer down.“It wou
“Thanks a lot for the protection, Aurora. I’m sorry that some bitch set your place on fire. Don’t forget to call me when you need help from my side,” a woman, the epitome of a lone rogue, said. Aurora nodded while the rest stood back and let them talk.“Why don’t you join us, Cali? It would be better if we moved together,” Aurora suggested, but the woman shook her head.“Nope. I prefer solitude. Don’t worry about me. How about this? When I think it’s time to settle in a place, you’ll be the first person I seek out,” Cali replied, and Aurora nodded again.“But you must tell us if you’re in danger or need our help too. It works both ways!” Layla hollered from the passenger seat as she sat beside Floyd. Cali chuckled before nodding.“Alright. I can do that. I’ll be on my way now,” she said before she shapeshifted into a brown wolf and darted into the forest.Vans had been sent from Moonlight Pack to help them get to their destination quickly. How they managed to organize such resources we
Aurora tensed against her will the moment they stepped inside the Moonlight Pack territory the next day. The images of her and Easton crossing the territory line years ago, battered, tattered, and bleeding profusely, flashed vividly in her mind. Their throats had been parched, their eyes drooping, and their bodies weak from exhaustion. The men had managed to fix the car and get it running again that morning, thankfully avoiding any rogue encounters along the way. It seemed the proximity to Moonlight Pack’s territory provided a lot of safety. She felt someone slip their hand into hers and turned to see Easton nodding at her with reassurance, though his eyes remained unreadable. She nodded back, squeezing his hand tightly.Kael glanced at them briefly before focusing his attention back on the road ahead. In a blink, they passed faces Aurora recognized—some altered slightly, others unchanged, even though the pack itself had undergone significant transformation. The once-humble surrounding
Aurora sat on a steep rock as she stared into the water body that was in front of her, a jar containing the fetus and another small jar that coined some green swirling liquid that glowed lightly in the early evening light. It was the remedy for those controlled by the puppetry art, she had set off and practiced for a lot of time before she was finally able to get it, she had been worried that she might not be able to find a cure before the witches take action—who knew that she would do it right after that thought crossed her mind. She had just taken a minute to sit and assemble her thoughts, take a breather from the usual tension that seemed to be wrecking her body more nowadays. After she followed Maverick's words and started seeing both her and the other Aurora as one, she had been able to feel her on a very personal level.Sometimes, it even felt like they were one single person. Their thoughts align more and they are able to communicate better—it almost feels like a communication
The witches arrived at the entrance of Left Green Woods, but to their surprise, they didn’t have to enter the manor because Maverick was standing out and the Manor door was shut.He glanced at them and paid no more attention to them again, his posture and position suggest that he was waiting for them but his attitude suggested otherwise.Daphne furrowed her brows as she stared at the door. “Why the hell would he keep the door locked, there’s no way we are entering now. Master instructed that we mustn’t let him close the door at all cost.”Rosa rolled her eyes at the woman, she didn’t like her because she didn’t have a good relationship with the Mistress. “Man shut it locked before we even arrived at this place, I am sure that the master can’t blame us for it. The only thing left is for us to go back and report.”“Lycan King Maverick, we would like you to come with us,” one of the sages started but Daphne cut him off.“Don’t start, Ivy, you don’t tell people like him to come along calm
Phoebe stared around as she was being led towards the Mistress’s office, when she arrived at the entrance of the castle, she didn’t have to tell them about who she was before she was told to come along. It seemed that he had informed them that she was coming, she didn’t know why he didn’t tell them straight away but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing for her.If she played her cards well, she would be able to turn everything in her own favor. The castle was fairly beautiful but also dark at the same time, it was a stereotypical dark place that one would expect a witch to live in. It seemed that this Mistress is such a cliché person. The man in front opened a door after knocking and fast enough, they were in the study and in the presence of the Mistress herself, there was also a lady standing by her side.Phoebe found a seat without being invited to sit in one, she studied the expression on the Mistress’s face and didn’t like it one bit, it was weird—but she couldn’t figure it out so sh
“Do you want to take a rest now? You have already worked hard since you found the books,” Maverick said, placing down a glass of milk beside Aurora.“Yeah, I should probably rest soon but there’s no way I can now, I want to gather all the facts I can get about the ways of producing the potion that can turn the potion back to normal people.”“You already found out about how to take care of the fetus and you have administered methods on it,”“Yeah,” Aurora hit her back on the chair softly. “Who knew that it was actually something as easy as finding essence fertilizer and using it on it raw? Turns out that the thing is not purely evil.” She mused.“That doesn’t mean that we should relax though, I am quite anxious about this master, he already ordered that they should turn me into a puppet. They are taking their sweet time which could only mean one thing,” she turned to glance at Maverick.“They are preparing something.”She nodded. “So I have to hurry.”“How are you supposed to get the p
A groan fell from her lips, followed by a pained grunt, she heaved heavily and tried to adjust her head to the darkness but she discovered that she wasn’t in a dark room, instead her head was covered by a dark cloth. She tried to move but she discovered that both her arms and legs were tied tightly—she had been abducted!Phoebe regulated her breathing and ease her body, preparing herself to recount the events that happened before she found herself at his place. She had spent quite some time at the spot where she hid, she made sure that the night had come before she set off. One, it would make her mate who might have been expecting her think that she was being stubborn and decided not to set off on that day again, two, she had better advantages at night—it would have been easier to deal with trouble she encountered on the way when her senses were all alerted. She had set off, walking carefully and examining everything and everywhere around her, she even made sure to be as careful as po
“You really do?” Aurora asked and Maverick nodded before he handed over a book that she didn’t know that he was holding. She collected the book from him and glanced at it for a moment before she turned to look at him.“What is this? Where did you get it?”“It is obviously a book and I got it from the training room.”She glared at him in anger before she moved closer to him but he only stepped away from her too. She raised the book in his face. “You obviously have this but you made me try every trick up my sleeve trying to open it when you have the answer? You are a jerk!” she yelled at him but he only rolled his eyes at her.“You might want to hurry,” he replied simply, she huffed and turned to open the book in her hand before she turned to stare at Maverick with surprised eyes.“You want me to use my blood? How am I supposed to do that?” He smirked before he provided a knife out of nowhere, she scoffed in disbelief. “I should cut myself?”“How else? Am I supposed to bite the blood ou
“Listen,” Mr. Brian’s voice started as soon as Phoebe descended the last step on the staircase, he was sitting in the living room and from the look of things, it was very obvious that he was waiting for her. Phoebe paused and regarded him with a blank gaze. “I don’t care whatever excuse you have, I have had it with you. You are going back to Blood Moon Pack today.”Phoebe remained silent, they would have this conversation the day before but when she came back from the hospital, his mother was nowhere to be found and Alec had assigned an important duty to her father.“I have arranged someone who would take you through the way to the pack, once you are out of the border of Moonlight Pack, the only thing you have to worry about are the puppets that would be lurking around,” her father continued regardless of her silence. “I have sought information from some members of the coven that I have good relationship with, they confirmed that the puppets have been reigned but regardless of it all
“I hope you aren’t feeling any pain again,” Sadie asked and Phoebe nodded with a blank expression on her face, she had collapsed as soon as she reached her room the day she met her mate and had extreme fever immediately, she was hallucinating the past events as if it was present and was breathing was erratic. Her parents had no choice but to bring her to the hospital and let Sadie attend to her personally. She was glad that it stopped their rants for a short time.Sadie furrowed his brows at her and stared at her in concern. Even though she didn’t get along with Phoebe, she couldn’t ignore a woman who seemed to be spinning down the depression path with a spiral, she bites her lips in contemplation.“Is everything alright?” She finally asked.“Does it look like it isn’t?” Phoebe replied, and Sadie just nodded in understanding, there was no way to force an answer out of someone who is not willing. She dusted her coat and dipped her hands in the pockets before she started making her way
The door opened and Mani stepped into the dark study that had only dim light at the moment, The Mistress was sitting behind her desk, she was flipping through a book that she got from the archived documents. She was trying to find out all she could about Crystabelle but she wasn’t getting anything through.Witches, no matter how powerful they might be, would have their records in the archives. It was a magic that no one has been able to find out its root, it would automatically record it, even the ones thousands of miles away or were just born or died. As long as you have some witch blood running through your veins you are down, but there was nothing showing up about Crystabelle, it was as if she didn’t exist at all.“What did you find out?” The Mistress finally asked her when she dropped the book down after a futile search.“There’s no way to be exact but she is at Moonlight Pack at the moment.”“Damn.” The Mistress sighed. “So there’s no way to track her movement.”“No.”“How is the
