CAROLINE

Grandmother was… different.

It didn't matter how grown up I was. To her, I was a child and “spare the rod and spoil the child,” she believed.

Oh! Not once did she spare the rod.

Flashes of being dragged down to the basement, my pleas falling on deaf ears, waltzed to the mind. Nothing but my screams and her whips broke the silence of the basement.

Tears burned in my eyes, blurring my sight and my shoulders trembled. I gripped the sheets tighter to my chest, biting my lips hard. His hands on my shoulders felt like small but sharp needles, piercing me hard with the reminder.

“Caroline, please, talk to me-”

“Let me go!” I screamed and pushed him hard. He didn't see it coming. He almost tripped over his own feet, staggering back with a great force.

My violence startled me, the sound of my scream echoing back to my own ears. Malcolm looked surprised, taken aback. He couldn't believe I could do something like that.

I trembled as I took a step back then hurriedly picked up my clothes

MALCOLM I had seen a lot in my life to know a beating from an accident and those scars sitting on her back was no accident.I recognized a whip when I saw one. Whoever did that to her was already destined not to live very long, I tell you.I was going to play Karma and in a very brutal way, so help me God. Amen. Her silence was enough answer but I wanted to hear it. “Caroline-”“I'm not obligated to answer any of your questions.”And just like that, her walls were up. I managed to wreck them yesterday and she came undone in my arms. I knew letting her have even a minute to herself was a bad idea. Now she tipped her head back and stared me right in the eye, holding whatever false chant she must've said to herself in our little time apart.“I’m only worried about you-”“No, I don't care. I didn't ask for that-”“Now what the hell are you talking about? You don't need to ask me to care for you, I already do!”Still, she held up a hand, stopping me, “And it concerns me how?” She arched h

CAROLINEI stayed cooped up in my bed all day, staring out the window until when I closed my eyes, I was sure it stared back at me.I enjoyed the solace of the room, sinking further in depression and a deep hollow sadness until Malcolm came barging in again in a grey sweatpants and a black shirt.“Okay, that's enough, Caroline. I can't let you do this to yourself.”Drained of energy, I managed to turn to him. First, ogling how good he looked in that outfit then my eyes dropped to his package before I held his gaze.“Do what?” I wondered.“Do this,” he had his hands on his waist. “Lie here and waste your days.”He was sometimes dramatic, how could I forget that? My lips twitched a bit. “Don't be dramatic. I just want to get some sleep.”“No, no more of that. Look, I know we're in hell but there's a lot you haven't seen and I want to show it to you.”My brow arched, “I don't want to fancy a place where people are abused and treated like slaves.”“I know,” he approached me carefully. “Bu

CAROLINE"I don't like this," I murmured against his mouth in the restroom. Loud music surrounded us and the banging of the music bounced off the walls. There was a party happening right outside and we were only a few feet away from being caught."What do you mean?" I caught the smell of alcohol on his breath as he leaned in to kiss me again, his hands squeezing my butt. "You've been begging for it all night."My breath hitched at the accusation and the guilt heated my cheeks. He backed me up against the sink and hoisted me up. My arms went around him as he kissed my neck and unhooked my bra."Malcolm--""It's Vegas," he murmured against my skin. "Remember?"No, this wasn't Vegas and we both knew what this meant for us. I felt terrible doing this to Louise. Wicked or not, no woman deserved this but I wasn't going to prompt him to divorce her and run to me."It's… not," my voice strained when he slid my underwear out of the way, tossing it somewhere. "No, bring that back-- oh fuck." hi

MALCOLM“I know where you’ve been,” were Louise’s first words when I answered her call. I’ve been ignoring her calls and texts for days now. I couldn’t leave someone so important for her nonsense.“Okay, and?” I asked, keeping my eyes on the road. My hands drummed on the wheels with excitement. I didn’t want anything to ruin my day. I was still bubbling from the excitement of staying around Caroline. She was the last person I wanted to speak to.“Dammit, Malcolm! You can’t keep it in your pants!” she screamed. This call could be recorded for all I knew. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”She groaned in frustration, “I know you’ve been with that slut.”“Darling, you call everyone a slut. You have to be more specific than that.”She growled harder, causing me to smile. I just loved toying with her and she enjoyed dancing to my tunes. “You know who I’m talking about.”“Sure. Louise.”“You said you’d try. You said you’ll fix us-”“Correction, I said those words to my daughter. You

CAROLINEThe silence in the room almost sent me deep into the ground. Susan was at one corner with her head down and her lips sealed while grandmother kept her eyes on my face, trying to wring out the truth from me.“It's no coincidence you disappeared around the same time Malcolm did-”I opened my mouth to speak but she continued-“I had to endure Louise shit talking. So you know how crazy that child is? How dare you put me in such a position, Caroline?”Oh God! My knees were almost trembling. I kept my fist behind my back as I fought hard to remember the lie I told myself on my way here.“Did you sleep with him?”My answer crawled up to my face and she didn't hesitate to glare at me. I felt like trash. I gulped, avoiding her gaze. “Uhm… I took Patterson’s advice and he saved me-”“Oh please, stop talking like a naive fool, Caroline. I thought I trained you better than that!”Yes, I still carried the scars from her training and now Malcolm knew about it too.“I heard your little boy

CAROLINE “We still couldn't agree on anything. The teams are working really hard but Edward is hellbent on not giving you a win,” Susan reported in my room much later after I had rested.Wrapped in my bathrobe, I sat at the desk with a glass of wine in one hand, scanning through the stacks of rejected proposals. The sharp ache in my head made it impossible to pay attention but I knew it was only an excuse. I need to work. I drained the drink in one full swing and started to reach for the bottle—“It's empty.”Susan's voice broke my focus and I looked up from the paper, glanced at the bottle and then at her. “What? That can't be. I didn't—” oh she was right. I emptied it.“You drank the whole thing," she said flatly.“Why didn't you stop me?” I mumbled, looking at my empty glass again and suddenly becoming aware of the wine in my tight belly.“And dinner's tonight, isn't it?” I asked in a sigh. She nodded in response.“Shit. I don't think I can eat anything.”“That's what you're worr

"You'll end this all for a stupid--""Mind your language, Marilyn," I snapped at once, startling her. "I won't take that attitude."Her eyes burned with tears."Marilyn!" CAROLINE I thought my confession was shocking until Malcolm blurted his after he finally learned to speak again. My hand was over my mouth with tears threatening to leak from my eyes. The annoyance swirling inside me moved like lava, burning my heart and heating up places I didn't even know could be angry. "Everything is in this flash," he handed it to me, trusting it in my hands. "I have friends that can take it up and with solid evidence, it'll all come crashing down--" "No, there's someone I trust to handle it. You should go be with Marylin, she needs you now more than ever," I forced a smile at him. "Where are you going?" Even I didn't know the answer to that question, I left quietly, getting in my car and driving far away. Every time I ended up at Susan's house, but I didn't go in. She texted me earlier that Alvin was with her at Tony's place so what was I doing here? The two were pretty close, it seemed. I stared at the drive in my hands, too afraid to play it, too afraid

CAROLINE Malcolm stepped aside with Tony, leaving me to my thoughts. I still couldn't believe Kris was associated with the organization. But how? He was so innocent with a good heart. It was hard to believe but Malcolm had been so sure when he screamed in his face to shut it down. I wiped my lips one more time, disgust rolling through me. This wasn't the first time Kris was being a bit pushy with his feelings, but it was never more than a kiss. The only reason I got with Kris was because he came on to me as a friend first, before Grandma got scheming and wanted him as a son-in-law. It hurt me that he saw no problem with her plans and jumped right into it, trying to force me to go along with it. God! I was surrounded by selfish people. "Susan, I want you to take Alvin to your place for the night and do it before Kris gets home, now." "Okay, how's the young miss?" She asked, concerned. "They took Malcolm's blood for testing so we're waiting for the results," a doctor stepped out

Trigger warning!MALCOLM"Dad, please help me, I'm scared! Dad, help!" Marylin screamed through the phone, my heart bursting with fear."You hear that, Malcolm!" Louise's venomous voice followed. "If you wanna tear this family apart, then fine! I'll do it for you! I'll kill her and then kill myself!""Stop this madness, Louise! She's your daughter too!" I screamed into the phone, racing down the road at full speed. My heart pounded like an Earthquake, and rain poured from the sky."I know that and that's why I have the fucking right to end her life too! I can do whatever the fuck I want with her. She's my daughter, Malcolm. My child!""Louise, you sound crazy. Turn the car around and bring her back. We can talk about this."She scoffed bitterly, "Oh now you want to talk? Don't you wanna stick it in Caroline's pants? What's so great about her fucking pussy anyway? You're just a fucking man-whore, Malcolm! That's what you are. If you think you can humiliate me in front of my whole famil

CAROLINEI knocked on her bedroom door, heart racing anxiously. I didn't know what I was going to say, but I hoped she'd at least give me the chance to speak."Can I come in?" I asked softly, pressing my ears against the door to hear--"Go away!"Right, of course. What was I expecting, a yes? Yeah, right. Taking a deep breath, I opened the door, surprised it wasn't unlocked, and I walked into her beautiful bedroom with lavender air freshener in the air.She jerked up on her bed, her mascara dropping down her eyes as she glared at me."Oh dear!" I gasped, but swallowed my words. "Can we talk?""We have nothing to talk about. Leave my room. I don't want dad scolding me. It's his house anyways and just because he let you in, doesn't mean you can come here-""Marylin, oh God. What's all this about? You know your father wouldn't say that. He respects and loves you," I tried to come closer but one stare from her and I froze."You got what you wanted, Caroline. You ripped my family apart. Yo

CAROLINE I snuck out of the hotel before Malcolm woke up. It was the best feeling waking up in his arms again. His steady breathing and gentle loving, the highlight of my night but I knew that wasn't my place just yet. I wasn't sure if it was ever going to be mine again. It took a lot to tear away from his side, but when I finally did I went straight to Kris's place. We were supposed to find a house together once he arrived. I snuck into the house, the calmness of the place causing my heart to pound. If I was lucky, Kris would still be in bed right now- "Where are you coming from?" “Jesus!” I yelped, heart pounding at being caught. I found him at the top of the stairs. His baby blue bathrobe hanging loose around his frame and a full glass of champagne in his hand. "It's too early for that--" I muttered, gesturing to the drink. "Dammit, Caroline! Don't try to change the topic. It's too early for this. This attitude-- where are you coming from and don't lie to me." He stormed dow

MALCOLMI barely focused on the moving picture on the big screen. The place was quiet, calm as I liked it, but there was nothing settling inside me.I had booked the whole room for myself, in hopes I'd enjoy the serenity of the place. Sitting alone in the far end of the room,. watching the big screen with a bored look on my face, I realized nothing could pull me from the depth of sadness.I barely paid attention to what was going on. Heck, I didn't even pick the movie, I just paid for whatever was on. The need to get away-- run away from the broken pieces of my life was overwhelming.A family. My phone vibrated for the umpteenth time and I glanced at it.Louise.She hadn't stopped calling since I walked out of dinner. What more did she want to hear or maybe she'd like to pull the victim card with Marylin?Sighing, my shoulders slumped with a weight. For once in my life, I wanted to make a decision while looking out for myself and not worrying about my daughter. If that made me a bad f

Once in a while I felt their stares but I couldn't lift my head up. Didn't want to.Not when I knew I had just broken him. The last I looked at Malcolm was when I took my seat again and the shock -- Fuck. I couldn't handle it.The disappointment in his eyes, the look on his face, I saw he shattered to pieces and now my heart was shattering, beating in sync to every rhythm of heartbreak."Chew carefully, sweetheart," I took his glass of water and brought it to his lips. "Don't rush it--""So Christopher, can I call you that or do you prefer Kris?" Louise seized her opportunity."Since it's a family gathering, I think Christopher is alright.""Great. When are you and Caroline planning your wedding? I mean there's already a child in the picture, you wouldn't want to waste any time sealing the deal. And
