Mary
I grabbed my bag and went to get the coffee,
following the corridors full of prying eyes towards me. I started hitting my feet impatiently while waiting for the elevator, thinking about what would wait for me from now on.
Pyotr Rozanov, however, doesn't seem to be so bad. I meaning, Sometimes that Russian accent proves difficult to understand and he knows to be annoying, but he is still better than Stan Smith.
Stan is the editor-in-chief of Politics magazine at Navruz Publications, he worked on the thirteenth floor and was a real pain in the ass.
The last time I came back from college vacation, my dad decided I'd follow that week's development. I managed to get fired by Stan the first day without even being hired. If I had to work for him, it was possible that I'd give up my career.
"You know, that noise is very annoying” The blonde receptionist who was sitting at the table in front of the elevator commented.
"I'm sorry," I stopped.
"My name is Halley Dawson," she stood up and came toward me, reaching out “I am the receptionist on the floor.”
I watched her for a moment, she was lower than me, wore a red social dress, black Scarpins and had well-treated smooth blonde hair.
" Mary Navruz” I shook her hand, offering a quick smile “The Russian's grumpy assistant.”
" Navruz? " The girl has wide her eyes. I don't remember seeing her last week “How...”
"Omar and Elena Navruz," I confirmed their suspicions, "They are my parents.”
"What are you doing here?” She asked shocked.
Behind me the elevator door opened.
"Working” I frowned.
Didn't I just explain that I'm Pyotr's new assistant?
"Why? "She insisted as I entered the elevator in a distracted way.
"What else could I do after I graduated? "I shrugged.
The elevator door closed with the girl outside staring at me in horror. Do people really think that because my parents are rich, I don't have to work hard to do anything? I understand my mother's point of view, she's right after all.
I got the coffee for my boss and bought a cheesecake for myself, going back to the office in a few minutes. I waved as I passed Halley, getting a smile in return and marched straight to the office.
"Here's your coffee Mr Rozanov," I said in an ironic tone, "White Mocha.”
"And what is that? "He pointed to the little box in my hand.
"That's my reward," I smiled, blinking an eye at him before Turning to begin my work.
" Marianne? "He called.
"Mary... I hate being called Marianne" I moaned turning to him.
"I asked without whipped cream" he pointed the paper cup open.
Damn it, Mary, why do you always forget those details?
"It's not hard to take away," I approached the table," you're not going to make me go back there and change, are you?”
"Bringing me a coffee shouldn't be a difficult task," I saw a glow in your eyes.
He's having fun torturing me!
"I forgot to ask then not to put the whipped cream, that's all” I justified myself “Besides, whipped cream is delicious, why don't you try it?”
Pyotr merely raised an eyebrow, as if I were being ridiculous, still looking into my eyes.
"Okay, if you really want it, I'll take it off" I declared putting my cheesecake on the table, opening the package and removing the spoon from there.
He didn't unstick his eyes from me when I leaned on the table, removing all the whipped cream with the spoon and putting it on top of the cake, trying to look intimidating while maintaining eye contact.
"Happy? "I asked emphatically, licking the spoon.
"Very much," the man smiled before I straightened myself.
If he didn't bother me so much in the first hour of work, I might even consider him sexy with that social outfit, neat hair and recently groomed beard. But I was too angry for it at the time.
"I hope next time you remember to order without the whipped cream, Marianne.
"I'll be at my desk if you need me," I murmured feeling like turning the cup of coffee over your head.
Despite our clash for the coffee, the rest of the day was peaceful. Pyotr explained to me what I was supposed to do, and it was a lot. He had been without a personal assistant for some time and was trying to organize everything himself, which left everything a complete mess.
When I went home at the end of the day, I felt exhausted. I got out of the cab just wanting to take a shower and lie down. I had moved back in with my parents since I graduated, even though I planned to move soon. I crossed the hall, following the sound of a animated conversation between the two, meeting them in the kitchen, discussing some release.
I loved that place, the straight-line black cabinets contrasted with the light room, giving the place an air of sophistication that only one of New York's best interior designers could afford.
And he got a lot for the design of that house.
"How was the day, Mary? " Omar smiled when he saw me.
"Horrible" I moaned, throwing myself into a chair “That guy is crazy!”
" Want to hear something really crazy? Your mother made dinner tonight” He stared at me with a fun glow in his eyes.
Sometimes it was strange to see my father so comfortable. On a day-to-day high, he was extravagant in his extremely formal clothes. But today he was wearing a white shirt with the first buttons open, and I could see the red tie full of patterns that he wore earlier thrown on the table.
"Besides working like crazy I will not have anything to eat? "I have complained, getting a frowning look from my mother “You must tell me why you are you punishing me.”
"Don't be overblown," my mother rolled her eyes “I'm making a roast meat, it's not a sophisticated thing.”
"It doesn't change the fact that they put me to work with a madman," I muttered.
"I've been a personal assistant for a long time Marianne," my mother declared, "It'll be good for you.”
"I doubt your boss was crazy," I hit back.
"Your father looked like an incarnate demon," she cast a look at me with sympathy, “and yet we got it right and created a great company together.”
"That wasn't very flattering," my father protested.
"Sometimes I forget you were his assistant," I sighed, “but I still can't imagine him that way.”
"Thank you!”
"Everyone ran away when they realized he was in a bad mood," my mother ignored him, "But with our coexistence, I learned to deal with it.”
"Now everyone runs away when they see you," I pointed out.
"That's not true!” She exclaimed.
"Of course it is," Omar provoked, "That's why you only show up at Navruz when we have a problem.”
"As if you needed my help to solve problems," she smiled.
My father seemed about to respond when the sound of my cell phone interrupted the conversation. As soon as I read the name on the caller ID I moaned, resting my forehead on the table.
"I was with him an hour ago," I cried, "What might he want that can't wait until tomorrow?
"Welcome to the real world, dear," Omar laughed.
"Meet your boss Mary," my mother got up by following the oven, “if he's calling, it's because it's important.”
Looks like this is going to be my life from now on.
MaryI opened my eyes when I heard the ringing of my phone sound in the darkness of my room, the only light coming from the screen of the device.I swear this time I'm going to kill him."What do you want? " I murmured still drowsy, hearing the voice of the Russian sound natural.Doesn't he sleep?"Marianne, could you bring me a cappuccino with cinnamon tomorrow?"It's three o'clock in the morning, Peter," I growl," Couldn't you have waited to ask me that?”"I thought I'd wake you up too soon," he justified himself, making my exasperation rise.I sat on the bed, yawning."Peter, you woke me up now," I took a deep breath."But you can go back to sleep now," I felt a smile in your voice."I'll turn it off," I murmured."Good night, Marianne," he wished."You'll have a lot of whipped cream in your coffee tomorrow, Piatri," I've rolled my eyes."Please let's keep Peter," he scoffed before ending the callI threw my phone on the bedside table, falling on the bed again. It's been a year sin
Mary"So, how's the punishment going? "Halley's voice surprised me."I'm going to take the whipped cream out of his coffee," I sighed.“How did this happen? Where did all that determination to make him suffer go?” she laughed."I have to find another way to accomplish this," I suspected, "Any ideas?"What if you started calling him at dawn? " She suggested it as we returned."I'd rather sleep," I denied “Besides, I'm pretty sure he doesn't sleep.”" How about arranging a bizarre new way to pronounce Pyotr?” She smiled."He's gotten used to it," I bit my lower lip, stopping by the door leading to my living room, “I'll think of something by the end of the day.”I went back to Pyotr's office who was distracted reading a text I had separated for him. I walked up to his desk and grabbed the coffee cup, trying to take out all the whipped cream at once with the spoon."Let me leave, I will do it," the man raised his eyes toward me."Too late," I raised the spoon with the whipped cream and ca
MaryI followed her quietly to the table where my father and Paris were waiting for us. She was a columnist for Adweek, a popular business magazine. She got her job a short time ago and was already interviewing the Navruz family.Good for her!I've seen her walk around the building a few times, but I've never been interested in meeting her, or even interacting with her. She wore a neutral-colored outfit and had her blonde hair elegantly messy."There are the women of my life," Omar declared. He had changed clothes since he was in the office earlier, he wore a gray suit with white shirt and wine tie. A matching scarf with the tie and ruby cufflinks completed the look.Did he always need to dress like he was about to watch an opera?"Do you know Miss Thompson? "He gave me a kiss on the cheek and a quick kiss on my mother lips, before pulling the chair so she would sit down"Mrs. Navruz" Paris smiled, reaching out to my mother “Ms. Navruz.”"Call me Mary," I asked."I've already ordered
PyotrI was just finishing getting ready for work. I slept a little longer than usual and lost my time, which was not common to me. I took a black tie from the closet and rushed into the living room. Today would be an extremely busy day, it was a bad day to be late.I was about to leave the house when I remembered the papers I needed to take, with a thousand curses running through my mind, I went back to the room to pick them up, putting the tie and my briefcase on the couch. As soon as I had everything I needed, I left the house hoping it wasn't one of the days when Mary decides to be late for revenge for the early morning call.I followed the traffic of Manhattan, wishing, not for the first time, to live closer to the Publishing company. That town was hellish!Luckily the traffic wasn't as bad as it could be and half an hour later, I was parking in my parking space at Navruz Publications.I waited patiently for the elevator to go up to the twenty-fifth floor, wondering if Mary would
PyotrAbout an hour ago I got a call from Willian McAdams, a writer we had been trying to contact for an interview for some time. He had the afternoon off and would agree to meet with me to define some terms of the interview and dissemination of his new Novel. That left me with a little over fifty minutes to meet him at the restaurant he indicated.I looked for Mary and I couldn't find her.Shouldn't she be back from lunch by now? That's when I remembered that lunch would be with her parents. I had forgotten about it, and she could spend the rest of the day away.Well, he told me to treat you like an ordinary employee, didn't he?I picked up my phone while I was typing a message for Mary, hoping she'd respond. I went down to the garage and I was about to call her when she called me."Where are you? "I asked when answering"I'm sorry, my mother came and was in a hurry," Marianne shot to say, "I forgot to tell you I was leaving."It doesn't matter, where are you? "I got in the car, gett
MaryPyotr went to the office, leaving me there with Halley. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for celebrations, I was still excited. It wasn't hard to convince her to accompany Allie and me at a dinner party at the restaurant that Jacob Adams, Allie's fiancé, was working on at the time.It would just be a simple dinner. It wouldn't hurt for this annoying guy to accompany us. We work together on this, we should at least celebrate together too."Are we going straight from here? " Halley questioned it as I matched the details with Allie by cell phone."Yes, we'll meet Allie at The Helen's in half an hour," I explained.Pyotr's footsteps caught my attention, and I immediately turned towards him, attracting Halley's attention."Hey Peter, are you sure you don't want to join us? "I smiled invitingly in the hope of making the man have a little fun “last chance.”"Have fun today, Mary," he replied with a minimal smile on his lips, "See you tomorrow, Ms. Dawson.”"Until tomorrow, Mr. Rozanov," H
MaryMy alarm clock rang well before I expected, it looked like I had just closed my eyes. I looked around looking confusedly at the darkness that took over the room, taking a while to situate myself and understand that it was actually my cell phone that was ringing."It's after 3:00 in the morning, Peter," I moaned."Do you think I should wear a blue or green tie to the meeting tomorrow? "He asked casually."Peter, why are you picking ties at 3:00 in the morning? "I turned aside with a voice smothered by sleep, closing my eyes again."Which do you think would be better?” He insisted."Look, I'm going back to sleep, okay? " I declared in the midst of a yawn “Take both, I choose one tomorrow.”"Sleep well, Mary," I heard."Whatever," I murmured before I hung up.Will he ever stop doing that?I went back to sleep with my phone still in my hand, waking up the next day with a slight headache, which immediately irritated me. I wore a striped shirt and a midi skirt with a sandal and rushed,
PyotrI watched Mary head to the door, leaving me behind stunned. What just happened?I woke up ready to be fired and when I least hope I'm engaged? And engaged to my assistant, the daughter of my boss that I've spent the last year struggling to see only professionally!?"Aren't you coming, Peter? "Mary again asked to stop by the open door."Come on, Marianne," I walked up to her.On one thing she's right, it won't be bad to have a bride as beautiful as her."You know, you're going to have to stop calling me Marianne," she smiled victoriously" As my future husband, you need to be less formal.”"You were expecting this, weren't you, Mary?" I rolled my eyes."I had to ask you to marry me to make you call me Mary” She scoffed as we went back to the conference room "Now come on Pitra, time to act like a couple in love.”"It didn't come anywhere near this time, Mary," I couldn't help the smile from reaching my lips as I heard yet another failed attempt.I know she does it to provoke me. I
Mary I kept alert during dinner, but nothing different happened. Am I becoming paranoid? Do I not know my father well enough anymore? " The most awaited time has come," Omar smiled as the plates were cleared away, "time for dessert.” I frowned as a Red Velvet cake was brought to the table by a waiter my father had hired for the evening. My surprise increased even more when he handed a cake knife with a spatula to Pyotr. " What's going on? " I stammered in confusion. " I thought it was clear that this is a celebratory dinner, Marianne," my father explained as if it were obvious. “Doesn't the cake tell you anything?” " That you've lost your mind and I can have you committed and take over the publishing company? " I tried. " What do I do with this? " My husband whispered to me. " I'm sorry to disappoint you dear, but my sanity is still intact," he smiled, "but it was a good guess.” " Can someone explain it to me? " I asked. " Don't look at me," Ian shrugged, "I've just been inv
MaryThe next day was the same as the others. Breakfast, walk with Libby in the park, lunch, physical therapy. I was surprised to get a call from my dad inviting us to his house for dinner. This was strange, because he usually took us to some restaurant or something, but I decided not to argue. At the agreed time we went to my parents' house." Why the last minute invitation? " Pyotr asked " Your father usually likes to plan things in advance.”" I don't know, he must be feeling lonely," I yawned. “I just hope he doesn't try to drag us off to some opera or theater or whatever.”" I warn him, you're tired," he assured me, taking me in his arms as we reached the door to the old man's house. He climbed the steps to the front door, setting me down and supporting me so that I could take the few steps to the door and ring the bell.To my surprise, it was Ian who answered, staring at me with a nonchalant look on his face." Hey, you're standing up " he smiled." Can you support her while I
MarryWe remained silent until we were in the car going back to the apartment." I'm sorry about that, he shouldn't have brought Margot here without consulting you," Pyotr sighed." We got through it," I stared at him, "She had a chance to explain herself, and now we can move on, Peter. We have closed this chapter of our lives.”" Really?”" Pete, I told you I've forgiven you," I pointed out slowly, "Don't you think you need to do the same?”He remained silent, after a quick glance. I knew how much he blamed himself for my condition, but I didn't want him to stay with me out of guilt, but because he loved me." I'm sorry," he finally spoke up, "I... I just hate seeing you like this thing.”" And I hate being like this," I took a deep breath, "but there's not much you can do about it, is there?”" If I had told you... " He looked away." If I hadn't decided to drive at that moment," I retorted, "If I had slowed down, or if I had remembered to buckle up, who knows. If I had…”" Mary…”"
MaryI awoke feeling the warmth of Pyotr's skin enveloping me, I snuggled into his arms, as that feeling of fullness came over me once again. Every part of my life was whole again. After Peter took me to the terrace yesterday I had no doubt, he is the one I want to spend the rest of my life with, I could never give this up. After I had this certainty, the rest was easier. We enjoyed our evening at home, and after dinner went straight to bed. I outlined Pyotr's face with my fingertips, thinking how lucky I was to have him by my side." What time is it? " he murmured, his eyes still closed." I don't know," I kissed him softly on the lips. Hearing the protests from the other side of the door " But the kitty and Libby didn't like that they slept outside.”" They'll have to get used to it," Pyotr laughed, moving away to look for his cell phone. “I will prepare breakfast.”" If you help me get dressed, we can do it together." I sat up in bed, looking around for my clothes." Help you? Why
pyotr" Pyotr? " Denise's voice caught my attention " Can you help me a little?”" Excuse me? " I closed the door, turning towards her." She doesn't want to do the exercises," the physiotherapist explained, walking towards me. “Could you…”" Sure," I sighed, walking into the living room.Denise had moved the furniture aside, laying out a mattress on the floor. Mary was lying there, she was panting and covering her eyes with her arm. " What's the matter? " I questioned."I increased the weight on her ankles” The woman indicated as I sat down on the floor beside her." It hurts," Mary whined." How much does she need to do? " I sighed.Every time Denise introduced a new exercise, or increased the weight, I had to intervene to get Mary to do the exercises." Ten," Denise said, "Ten on each leg.”" Anne," I pulled her arm away from her eyes. " Come on, just ten.”" But…”" You can do it, моя девушка¹ " I assured her, caressing her face " Come on.Mary took a deep breath, starting to do
PyotrIt was the first week of October, Mary had started physical therapy and slowly she was allowing me to get closer.First we were able to have a conversation, then she began to allow me to help her, touch her, and finally we were back to sharing a bed.As promised, I was giving her space, and it seemed to be working. Little by little we were on our way to becoming the couple we were before." Are you ready? " I questioned Mary as I heard the ringing of the doorbell. It was almost time for her physical therapy session and she seemed a bit down today." Sure," she sighed, as I walked to the door." Is everything alright? " I frowned, interrupting my path." It's nothing," as usual, she guided her chair to the window. I hated to see her like this, but according to Denise, her physical therapist, Mary was responding well and would soon be using the walker." You know you can tell me anything, right?”" Answer the door, Pyotr," she said, "Soon Denise will give up and leave, you shoul
MaryThe sound of the door opening caught my attention. My mother stepped forward to help my husband who came in carrying some bags, Libby and the kitten that were in their transport cage." Sorry for the delay," he smiled, "I thought I'd better come by and get them both at once, I'm sure they'll miss you.”My mother took the groceries to the kitchen, while he released the two from their little prisons. It seemed like a century since that Friday when my perfect life fell apart." He's huge! " I exclaimed as I saw the kitten run towards me and jump into my lap.Libby did the same, but stopped at my feet and whined." How are you feeling? " Pyotr approached." Fine," I assured him, "Can you put her on my lap too?”" That's a start " Pyotr fulfilled my wish, while I stroked Corgi's ears and the kitten nibbled her paw." I'm going home " My mother commented as she approached me " I'll be back tomorrow, okay?”" All right " I smiled." Don't push or rush," she lowered her tone, "Just don't
MaryAfter a hellish week in that hospital, I was finally able to go home. According to Dr. Clark, the surgery was a success. Slowly the feeling in my legs was returning, although I didn't have the strength to move them, which was a bit painful.I hated going back to the apartment with Pyotr, I wanted to keep as much distance from him as possible. It was hard to have all those conflicting feelings inside me. I loved my husband, I wanted him to be around, I wanted his support. But I couldn't forget what happened. I felt anger towards him. Not for my situation, despite what everybody said, I didn't blame him for that. But I blamed him for our situation, I blamed him for feeling alone so many times, I blamed him for not being able to trust him, I blamed him for not being able to feel his touch without me remembering everything, I blamed him for having that whole fight tarnish the memory of the first time he told me he loved me.How can we get through all this?" Here we are," my mother
PyotrI went back to the apartment at night, knowing that I couldn't stay with her while she was in the ICU. I felt lost being in the apartment alone. I went to our room, deciding to take some things to the room on the second floor. It is already Tuesday and I haven't slept properly since Saturday, which means I am exhausted. But I couldn't sleep there alone. We still weren't sure about the success of the surgery, and even if it had been successful, it would take Mary a while to walk again. I fell asleep on the couch around four in the morning.Omar, Elena and I came to the conclusion that it would be better to tell her about the report only when she went to her room, so as not to disturb her recovery. I visited her in the morning, and didn't have much to do for the rest of the day until the next visiting hours, so I decided to go to the publishing company to see how things were going. As soon as the elevator doors opened, Halley stared at me in surprise. Her gaze then turned to conte
