Chapter 198

Author: Rainstorm
Behind the mask, Jane's expression stiffened, for in that moment, the girl's face had momentarily transformed into Wendy's.

The girl was barely clothed, her body covered in bruises and wounds. Blood streamed from between her legs, and she convulsed violently before her death. Her eyes were wide open, staring at the young commander who had dismounted.

Jane silently approached, took off her cloak, and draped it over the girl's body, her eyes filled with an endless coldness.

With her last bit of strength, the girl grabbed Jane's hand, digging her nails into the back of her hand, pouring out her hatred. She opened her mouth, and blood spilled from it.

"Why?"

With hatred and confusion, she died. The entire process lasted only a few seconds.

Wallace looked up, seeing only a few soldiers scrambling, quickly disappearing after a fleeting glance.

Jane closed the girl's eyes, then stood up and walked into the tavern. Wallace followed closely behind and casually locked the door.

Behind the mask, Jane's eyes gleamed with a hint of crimson. Her master's son—the real Stanley—had been dead for a long time. That was the greatest pain for her master and mistress. Saul deserved to die!Saul immediately scrambled to his feet, staring at Jane in disbelief."How dare you kick me?" he gasped.Other troop leaders stood with Saul. "Stanley, we are your elders, you…""Good kick!" Marissa suddenly stepped forward, radiating an even colder aura.Kennedy, seeing his wife, quickly stepped forward."Marissa, don't make things worse now."Marissa pushed her husband aside, walking to Jane's side. She turned to face the aggressive troop leaders and gave a mocking smile."Our forces eliminate evil and pacify the good. Where have we gone wrong? As for you, you are the ones who cannot distinguish right from wrong. After capturing Kraven City, you resorted to bandit-like behavior, ruining the reputation of our Nidoran soldiers."Stanley, you should send a letter to the king, l

Under the blows of the military cudgel, the sound of miserable cries rose and fell.Meanwhile, Saul's strategist, having traveled among various parties, persuaded a few other generals to go to Stanley to negotiate for peace."Commander Morris, now that the bad apple is gone, please don't blame Saul any further.""The Southern Battalion fought valiantly; it would be a shame not to let them join the army," one of the generals said.Jane leisurely sipped her coffee, her eyes cold and distant. After the punishment ended, she placed the cup down."Proceed with the attack on Romenia's capital. The Southern Battalion will serve in the vanguard and redeem their wrongs through merit."These words left the other troop leaders stunned.-Out of the forty or so men, only Shane survived.Hearing that Stanley was willing to keep the Southern Battalion and even make them the vanguard, Saul breathed a sigh of relief, feeling as if a great treasure had been obtained. He cupped his hands and s

Inside the main tent, Jane stood by the sand table, overlooking the entire Romenia terrain map. She appeared casual, but there was an unmistakable sharpness to her gaze, one that seemed to look down on everything.Wallace quickly walked in."Commander, Shane is dead."Jane wasn't surprised at all. Without lifting her head, she asked, "What about the woman's family?""I've sent them safely out of the military camp. No one saw them committing the crime."Jane slightly lowered her chin. "Hmm. That's fine then."Wallace looked worried. "Commander, what about Commander Saul? His nephew's death... Can he still focus on the battle?""Not everyone in the Southern Battalion has a dead nephew. He's the only one." Jane's tone remained indifferent. "If the commander can't focus on the fight, he should pull back. As long as the Southern Battalion can still fight, it's not a huge issue.""Understood!"After Wallace stepped out, Commander Saul stormed in their part of the camp.He pushed pa

Nidora's army was unstoppable, crushing every opponent in its path as it advanced northward to the royal capital of Romenia. Their morale soared.Romenia's forces put up a desperate resistance, but they were surrounded on all sides. As they watched their comrades fall one by one, despair consumed them.Boom.The once impenetrable city gates were shattered.Nidora's vanguard stormed in, shouting, "Destroy Romenia! Capture Ronald!"On the city walls, Marcelo personally led the defense. As the enemy forces surged forward like a dark storm, his eyes locked onto a figure on horseback, masked yet unmistakable.Stanley.At that moment, Marcelo felt an involuntary shudder."Marcelo, watch out!"A soldier lunged in front of him, taking the fatal blow meant for him.Marcelo fell to the ground, his gaze fixated on the Romenian flag being torn down. It was replaced with Nidora's emblem. He roared in defiance.A group of Nidoran soldiers seized him and dragged him before Stanley."Sta

Bang! The moment the door to the meditation room opened, Steven was met with a figure blocking his sight, who exited and swiftly shut the door again. The man turned around—it was none other than Cain Lucille of Radiant Sanctuary.Cain, in his fifties, moved with agility, exuding both gentleness and unyielding strength, much like the philosophy of harmony."Blessings must be completed with sincerity from start to finish. Her Majesty is in seclusion, chanting scriptures. I have been entrusted with ensuring that no one disturbs her," he announced calmly.Steven had heard of Cain's reputation.During the previous king's reign, Cain had been a formidable commander. Burdened by the bloodshed he had caused, he chose to leave the battlefield and devote himself to religion.Near Radiant Sanctuary, he had also established a small monastery, Mercy Temple, to shelter orphans and the displaced. His countless good deeds had earned him great respect among the common people. With Cain standin

Four hours later, they were nearing Radiant Sanctuary.George rode his horse under the night sky, dressed in a dark robe embroidered with silver trim. His gaze was sharp and penetrating, black as ink.Karlsen followed closely behind. The king was burdened with state affairs, yet he had personally come here in the dead of night for the queen. It was an unusual display of personal involvement.Radiant Sanctuary was especially quiet at night.Upon hearing of the king's arrival, Cain personally came to the temple gates to greet him. He appeared remarkably calm."Your Majesty, the queen is in deep prayer…"George was not as easy to brush off as Steven. Before Cain could finish, George coldly interrupted, "What? Do you think I would disrupt her prayers?"Cain lowered his head slightly, showing deference. "That is not what I meant, Your Majesty."Without another word, George strode directly into the temple, making his way straight to the meditation room.Cain remained where he stoo

George and Jane sat in the same litter, while others rode horses. Lily, being a woman, sat on the litter's shaft. In front of Radiant Sanctuary, Cain watched the carriage leave, and a young monk beside him worriedly spoke up, "Master, will there be any consequences from leaving before the prayers were finished?"Cain clasped his hands together and replied, "No, the prayers have been completed."-Inside the litter, Jane soon woke up, but she wasn't fully conscious. Her awareness hadn't completely returned, and she seemed to be in a dreamlike state. The doctor had said she caught a cold, but the truth was she had rushed back to the Royal City without properly treating her injuries, which had led to a fever. She felt unwell, and the carriage was stuffy. Driven by instinct, she lifted the curtain, hoping for some fresh air.Suddenly, a large hand reached out and pulled her back in.A man's cold, low warning echoed in her ear."Stop fidgeting!"Jane was forced to sit back down.

Lily had a quick-witted idea."Your Majesty, the queen is sweating a lot. Let me wipe her down."After that, George got up from the bedside.Within the drawn curtains of the bed, Lily loosened the queen's belt and inner garments. Sure enough, the wound had reopened. If it wasn't treated soon, the blood would seep out. She had made it in time. While Lily busied herself inside, George sat outside. His gaze was cold as he stared out the window. The night was dark, as if hiding a beast ready to leap out and devour people. As someone was already tending to the queen, George stood up, ready to return to Tyrian Palace. But then, something in the corner caught his attention. It was a chest—likely part of the queen's dowry. The carvings of lions on it were incredibly lifelike.Even in the palace, such craftsmanship was rare.He walked over and suddenly noticed something off about the brick under his foot.It felt loose. His gaze darkened as he looked down…-Jane's injury wasn't s

Jane never told George that Darren had died for her. The Thiberium poisoning had been meant for her. Darren had taken it in her place. She also never told George that Darren had already given her the Miracle Needles manual. At the time, she had been too busy waging war and had only learned half of it. So when he was poisoned, even though she hastily studied the rest, she still couldn't save him in time.Because of this, she could never forgive herself. That night, many struggled to sleep.George and the royal guards practiced combat through the night. The guards were miserable.Rachel lay awake until dawn, unable to calm her excitement about leaving the palace with the king the next day.The next morning, by the break of dawn, Rachel was already dressed and had prepared the offerings. The guards assigned to escort her had the carriage ready. When a concubine left the palace, she had to use the side gate.Rachel, however, didn't get into the carriage right away. Instead, she ask

In the evening, at Tyrian Palace, George was about to settle down for the night when he noticed that Jane was still reading. He walked over. "Is that book really so fascinating?"Jane didn't even look up."I've sent people to investigate the purchase records of floral brocade in recent years. While waiting, I thought I'd search for clues about that nine-tailed serpent motif."George snatched the book from her hands, forcing her to raise her head and look at him. "It could just be an ordinary design.""Perhaps." Jane reached for the book, but he spoke again."There's a military physician in the Northern Battalion with the last name Durand. Was he the one who taught you Miracle Needles?"Jane's gaze subtly shifted.Growing impatient, George pressed further. "I want the truth. Was it him?"Jane's expression was cold and detached. "Yes."A storm brewed within George. The Durand family never passed down the Miracle Needles technique to outsiders—only their own bloodline. That mea

There were screams from within the palace."You scoundrel! Who's sick? Who are you calling delirious? I'm perfectly fine! Ahh! What are you doing!"Since Mary was struggling so violently, Dina had no choice but to order her to be restrained. A moment later, Mary was tied to the bed, thrashing wildly as she shouted toward the door where Dina stood."Mother! Save me!"Dina couldn't help but feel a pang of heartache. "Mary, I'm only helping you."Mary was utterly baffled. She had just been quietly embroidering a fragrant pouch, yet her mother suddenly thought she was ill."The queen. Get the queen!" Mary barked at Irene.Wilhelmina, who stood right beside Dina, felt a chill run down her spine. Why call for the queen? Could Mary really have lost her mind?–At Zen Palace, Jane was flipping through ancient texts, searching for any records of the nine-tailed serpent motif.Suddenly, Maya rushed into the inner chamber. She seemed out of breath."Your Majesty! Something terrible ha

"I only heard that Commander Morris was quite close to a military physician, and there were even rumors of an intimate relationship." At this point, Richard hesitated before adding, "But I believe those were baseless rumors. It was most likely just camaraderie between comrades."George's expression turned unusually serious."What is the physician's name, and where is he now?""I only recall that his surname was Durand."'Durand?'George immediately thought of the Miracle Needles. That physician was likely a descendant of the Durand family.Richard had no idea why the king was asking about this, so he returned to the main topic."Your Majesty, since Jocelyn is not the true Commander Morris, why have you not made this public?"George's gaze turned dark."I have my own plans."Right now, all he could think about was that military physician with the surname Durand.–Outside the royal study, Karlsen saw Richard step out and greeted him respectfully.Karlsen's face was expressi

At Grace Palace, Rachel sat in front of the mirror. Her gaze was slightly empty. Aurelia couldn't bear to see her like this."Your Highness, it's getting late."The king not coming didn't mean she should refuse to sleep.Rachel murmured softly, "Yes, it's late."Was the queen accompanying the king at this hour? She used to console herself with the thought that perhaps the queen, like her, was nothing more than a facade to deceive others and had never truly shared the king's bed.But if that were true, why would the king summon her to Tyrian Palace? Even Rosalie had rarely set foot there in the past. This proved that the king truly favored the queen. Then what was she?She had exhausted every means at her disposal, yet she couldn't make the king spare her even a glance.Tonight was destined to be a sleepless one.-The next day, during the court session, ministers were still debating over Jocelyn's death."Your Majesty, Commander Morris held great prestige among the people.

  • Substitute Queen's Revenge   Chapter 415

Jane proposed making the truth public to prevent the people from continuing to misunderstand. However, George's gaze was extremely cold."There's no need."Now, it was her turn to be confused. Between two difficult choices, one should choose the lesser evil. As a king, did he not understand this?George was very serious."If we expose that Jocelyn is an impostor, the Morris family won't escape punishment. Neither will the tens of thousands of Northern Battalion soldiers."Even if those soldiers were unaware of the truth, people could always find an excuse to accuse them. If that happened and someone with ulterior motives took advantage of the situation, the entire Northern Battalion would be thrown into chaos.By keeping this secret, he could still protect the Morris family and those soldiers. If the truth was revealed, he would have to handle the matter impartially. Otherwise, his authority would be compromised.Jane said nothing. In her heart, she naturally leaned toward her

George saw a light in her eyes that he had never seen before. The surroundings were silent. It was as if, as long as she looked at him like this, he could agree to anything. But he was not so easily swayed. After only a brief moment of distraction, he quickly regained his usual cold and imposing demeanor and spoke in a steady tone."In the second year of my reign, the allied forces of four nations attacked Nidora. I led the army into battle. After the war ended, I returned to the capital, passing through a misty forest on the way. There was an ambush in that forest."While fighting off the assassins, one masked individual released a creature that resembled a salamander. I was bitten by it and poisoned. Only later did I learn that it was Thiberium poisoning."Jane was well aware that Thiberium poisoning involved raising salamanders and feeding them a specially prepared poison daily. Over time, the creatures would absorb the toxins and become what was known as Thiberium, naturally

Mary was feeling guilty. Jocelyn had managed to escape from prison thanks to the Falcon Command Token she had secretly delivered to her. She had known the truth would come to light sooner or later, but she hadn't expected it to be this soon.Even more surprising was that after questioning her for a while, George suddenly stopped. Instead, he changed the subject and solemnly warned her."Mary, I can choose not to punish you for this matter, but from now on, stay away from Zen Palace."Mary's fists clenched involuntarily. She met George's gaze, refusing to back down, and smiled."Your Majesty, you've been on the throne for seven years now, yet you still have no heirs. That's quite unusual, isn't it? I heard from Grandmother that you've decided not to favor the harem unless the queen bears an heir?"Forgive me for speaking out of turn, but over the years, you've shown favor to Lady Rosalie and Lady Helena, and even spent nights with Rachel. Yet none of them have conceived. So why do

Mary stared blankly at the person before her.The queen was actually Commander Morris who had saved her all those years ago.Good heavens! What had she been doing all this time? She had actually believed Jocelyn and gone against the queen at every turn. She had even exposed the queen's marriage substitution. For the sake of Jocelyn, an impostor, she had nearly caused the death of her true savior. At this moment, Mary was filled with regret and remorse.Jane lowered her gaze to the bracelet on her wrist and sensed something was off.Their eyes met suddenly. Mary's gaze was emotional, her voice trembling. "You–"She had countless things to say, but she didn't know where to start."Commander, I personally measured your wrist for this bracelet. Now, do you still wish to deny it?" Mary gazed at her intently.Jane's brows furrowed slightly. "Princess–"Mary interrupted her. "I was a fool. I conspired with Jocelyn and went against you at every turn. It's only natural that you bla
