Chapter 14

Author: Rainstorm
Finding a place to bury the body was secondary. Jane's main purpose in sneaking into the palace that night was to scout a few potential hiding spots.

She wanted to avoid a repeat of the incident at Cloud Palace—being chased and forced to flee straight back to Zen Palace, inadvertently leading her pursuers there.

Lily was still worried.

The last time Jane infiltrated Cloud Palace, she ended up getting injured.

Would there be any accidents this time?

Meanwhile, at Serene Palace, upon hearing that the queen had been put under house arrest, Dina sighed deeply.

"A man's heart lies where his treasures are.

"The queen, new to the palace and without solid footing, has yet to win the king's favor. Even if she wanted the gold emblem, she shouldn't have acted so recklessly."

Laurel shook her head as well.

"In my opinion, the only one who could take the gold emblem from Lady Helena would be Rosalie if she were still alive. Her Majesty, the queen, is merely chasing an unattainable dream."

The narrow underground chamber was filled with tension as their eyes met. The surrounding air seemed to grow colder.Jane wasn’t dressed in her dark cloak, disguised instead as an ordinary court lady. Do you know the way out…”George’s expression changed slightly. This court lady didn’t seem to know who he was.Indeed, Jane had no idea that the man before her was her husband, the king, George. They had only met twice in total. The first time was on their wedding night, where the chamber had been pitch black. The second was the night the assassin was apprehended. He had stood behind her while she was in the bath, and she never turned to look at him.To this day, she didn’t know what he looked like.Similarly, George didn’t know that this court l

"Get off me!" George's voice was hoarse.During the flare-up of Thiberium poisoning, there were varying degrees of damage to his body. His throat felt as if shards of ice had gouged through it, making his voice raspier and more menacing than usual.Even uttering those three words caused unbearable pain. This woman was utterly infuriating."So, you can speak," Jane remarked, having assumed he was mute.In the next moment, her gaze fixed on his neck, and her expression changed. It was as though she'd stumbled upon something crucial.Jane stared at the silver line on his neck. She had been searching for Thiberium for a long time. To be precise, she was looking for the person who knew how to use it."Who used this poison on you?" Jane asked calmly. There was a slight glimmer in her eyes.George's expression remained dull. It seemed like he wouldn't tell her.Swoosh! He was caught off guard when Jane ripped his shirt open.Just as she expected, the silver line extended to his ch

Her sister was still alive! Jane clutched the note and clenched her fist before pressing it against her heart. Her eyes closed. She couldn't wait to see Wendy.-The next evening, Jane put on a disguise and snuck out of the palace. There was a carriage parked at the entrance of a remote alley. The young man driving the carriage saw her and immediately jumped out to greet her."Greetings, Commander Foster!"Wallace was one of her trusted advisors. He had followed her from the military camp all the way to the Royal City. When Jane had entered the palace, she had sent Wallace to Foster Mansion to secretly track down the bandits who had raped Wendy. She didn't expect such a big surprise from Wallace."Where is Wendy?" Jane asked softly while trying to remain calm.Wallace lifted the carriage's curtain. "I'll take you to her right away."Wallace explained everything to her while he drove the carriage."I noticed the butler's strange behavior that day and quietly followed him to t

All Jane knew was what Gloria had told her on the day of her wedding. Now, Candace revealed a lot more information."Ms. Wendy has been vomiting ever since she was sent home. She didn't throw up food scraps but human feces! They had the audacity to force that stuff down her throat! They didn't only rape her. They even used red-hot iron tongs to…! The physician said she won't ever be able to have children!"Not being able to bear children was a disaster for a woman in Nidora.Candace choked up several times and couldn't go on. Eventually, she buried her face in her hands and cried.Jane pursed her lips. She had a murderous look in her eyes. The cramped room was filled with an air of hostility. After a long while, Candace calmed down a little. She knelt in front of Jane again."Your Majesty, do you intend to kill Lady Helena in revenge?"Jane clenched her fists tightly with a cold expression on her face.Candace pressed on, "Your Majesty, when Ms. Wendy was still conscious, she a

Although Timothy was only a chamberlain, he acted in an arrogant manner. It was as if the queen had to give him what he asked for. However, after a long while, nobody answered the door.Instead, Maya came despite living further away. She seemed worn out. Since the queen wasn't favored by the king, Maya's status was even lower than the lowest-ranked servant from Cloud Palace."Timothy, please be patient. The queen is probably still in bed. I'll check on her," she said.Timothy lifted his chin. "Then hurry up!""All right, I'm going in right now."As soon as Maya entered the bedchamber, she saw Jane dressing. She immediately approached her, smiling."Your Majesty, Lady Helena has a headache. If you could give her some medicine, the king would certainly notice your kindness. You'd have a chance to start over. Don't you agree?"Jane slowly filled in her eyebrows in the mirror. She seemed completely unbothered."I've run out of the medicine."Maya's face fell. George pursed his lips and tried to suppress his anger. The medicine the queen had sent the last time was effective. He had asked the physician to research how to make it. However, there had been no progress due to the lack of a few important ingredients.George had thought the queen was truly kind-hearted, but it turned out she had been waiting. She wanted to use the medicine to get what she wanted from him. If that was her game, so be it!George was annoyed and asked, "What else did she say?" Timothy's forehead was covered in sweat."The queen said that the longer you hesitate, the longer Lady Helena will suffer from the headache. If you don't agree, she won't give you the medicine even if she has to destroy it. She even said that a verbal promise isn't sufficient. She requires a written decree from you."Timothy's limbs were weak. He felt doomed. Was the king going to kill him? After listening to what Timothy said, George's facial expression turned gloomy. There was dead

After the king left, Helena's maid, Clara, became deeply worried."Your Highness, if the queen truly gains the king's favor, your position in the palace will not be unique," she said.Crash!Helena threw a vase near her bed, and it broke into pieces.Clara immediately gathered up the pieces and knelt on the ground. "Please calm down, Your Highness!" she begged.Helena sat sideways on the bed, clutching the mattress with one hand. Her eyes were gloomy. She stared ahead as she screamed in a frenzy, "How could the king favor her?!"The queen had long lost her virginity. How dare she brazenly compete with her? She was over-estimating herself.-Meanwhile, several other concubines gathered in one place. They had never been favored by the king and were not as angry as Helena. However, they still felt affected by this."Ahh! In the end, the queen proves to be capable. The king actually agreed to her demands."Julie, who had always sided with Helena, couldn't stand it and started mo

George's dark eyes radiated chills as he looked coldly at the woman in front of him.Julie was kneeling on the bed in very thin pajamas.Whether it was due to the cold spring evening or the king's anger, Julie shivered uncontrollably with her head hung low."I-I'm Julie. We met in Lady Helena's palace…" She barely managed to finish her sentence. Her throat felt dry and constricted.Despite his perfectly calm tone, George's handsome face had a coldness that terrified her from the bottom of her heart."Where is the queen?" he asked again. The air around them felt thinner and thinner. Julie could hardly catch her breath. "Your Majesty, the queen arranged for me to serve you in bed," she said.At the commotion, Steven came in without being summoned. He happened to overhear what Julie said and was flabbergasted. Wasn't the queen supposed to be waiting for the king in bed? What was she doing? Was she playing hard to get?In reality, Julie was also surprised. She never thought she'd

George stood there, his expression darkening, cold as the harshest winter frost. Despicably, he blamed everything on the queen.Suddenly, Jane's strong internal energy sensed his presence. Their eyes met, and she saw the disgust in his gaze.Lily followed Jane's line of sight. Seeing that it was the king, she hurriedly grabbed the robe from the bed and draped it over Jane's shoulders. She completely ignored the fact that it was only natural for a king to look at his own woman.Fortunately, the wound had just been bandaged."Greetings, Your Majesty." Lily stepped out of the bed curtains and performed a curtsy first.Jane dressed herself without greeting him. Inevitably, the movement pulled at the wound on her back, but she could endure it.George asked coldly, "The queen's fever still hasn't subsided?"Lily lowered her head. "Y-Yes."She was somewhat nervous. She had no idea when George had come. Thankfully, she and Jane hadn't said anything confidential just now. Otherwise, t

"Yes."If it were any ordinary person in danger, she would still step in to help. Then, Jane added, "Within my ability."Marissa had often reminded her that this life of hers belonged to her first and foremost.George cared only about that single word, 'Yes'.He couldn't quite describe what he was feeling at that moment. Helena had also risked her life for him, given her heart's blood for him, and even sacrificed years off her lifespan. By comparison, the queen had merely cured him of Thiberium poisoning and taken an arrow for him–nothing close to Helena's four years of devotion.Yet, it was the queen's actions that stirred something in his heart.Perhaps it was because Helena gave, but also demanded something in return. Whereas the queen never had…However, the gentleness in George's eyes was once again replaced by cold indifference.Who could say for certain that the queen was truly without wants? What if it was simply a strategy of retreating in order to advance? He had

Teressa arrived at Zen Palace with an air of authority. The chief maid, Maya, hurriedly led her into the inner chamber.Inside, Teressa saw George next to the table, his gaze fixed on the bed where a maid was feeding Jane her medicine. He was so focused on the queen that he didn't even notice his grandmother's arrival. Her presence wasn't acknowledged until Steven saw her. "Greetings, Lady Teressa!"Only then did George snap out of his thoughts and rise to welcome her."Grandmother." His voice was hoarse, as if he had developed a fever and hurt his throat.Teressa felt a pang of sympathy for her grandson."George, you were up all night dealing with the assassins and barely rested. The queen has plenty of people attending to her. You should go back and get some rest."George's expression remained indifferent, as though it didn't trouble him much. "I only stopped by to take a look. I was just about to leave."Teressa nodded before turning her gaze to the woman on the bed."What

Dina was usually kind and gentle. If not for being pushed to the limit by Wilhelmina, she would never have raised her hand. She gazed at Wilhelmina, her palm still tingling, and felt uneasy."Wilhelmina! I told you to watch your words and actions. Now look at you. You have truly disappointed me!" she scolded. "A few words from Lady Rachel were enough to make you lose your senses? Do you really think she has your best interests at heart?""She knows you are not like Rosalie, that you will never be favored by the king, and that you are easy to manipulate. That is why she wants to support you in rising to power. "But once she bears a royal son, you will be left guarding an empty title, only to be cast aside in the end! Do you understand?"Dina's words jolted Wilhelmina back to her senses. She covered the side of her face where she had been slapped and forcibly steadied her emotions."Aunt Dina, you are right. I was wrong."Upon leaving Serene Palace, Wilhelmina felt troubled.Bac

Lily wasn't sure whether she should announce that Jane had woken.Fortunately, at that moment, a voice came from behind the curtain. "Your Majesty, I just woke up."After hearing her speak, George lifted the curtain with one hand. His slender fingers grasped the fabric, leaving noticeable creases.Their eyes met. He gazed at the frail woman before him, his fists clenching slightly."Rest well."Beyond that cold, distant expression of concern, he said nothing more.Jane broke the tense atmosphere, supporting herself as she sat up.George frowned, stepped forward, and reached out to steady her by the waist. Unknowingly, he pressed against an old wound.Jane drew in a sharp breath and froze.George noticed her reaction. "What's wrong?"He rarely displayed such patience with her."It's nothing." Jane shook her head gently, though inwardly, she was rolling her eyes. Enduring the pain, she mustered her strength to sit up.George had no idea about the injury on her abdomen. When h

Wilhelmina immediately knelt on the ground, her face still showing signs of panic.Dina no longer showed her usual kindness. She sat with a solemn expression."Explain yourself. How much were you involved in tonight's events?"Wilhelmina still wanted to deny it. "Aunt Dina, I didn't–"Dina cut her off. "From the moment the rumors started, I felt something was off. They say the queen and Edward met in Serene Palace and rekindled old feelings. "But that day, Edward came to see me. I refused to meet him and had him sent away. How, then, could he have remained outside all that time? If he had left immediately, would he have met the queen at all?"The more I thought about it, the more I realised the only person who could have influence in Serene Palace was you! You were the one who falsely passed off my orders."Wilhelmina anxiously defended herself. "Aunt Dina, I–""Don't interrupt! I'm not finished!" Dina said sharply. "I initially thought you were just displeased with the queen,

Although Jane had given the order to remove the arrow, and even though she was the one who was wounded, the physician still waited for the king's command.George's expression was ice-cold. He nodded. "Do it."With his approval, the physician swiftly and precisely pulled the arrow out.Jane gripped the bedding beneath her tightly. She let out only a muffled groan before falling completely silent. Sweat beaded on her forehead, dampening the strands of hair at her temples. The physician inspected the iron arrowhead, his hand trembling slightly as he turned to George."Your Majesty, just as I suspected, it's poisoned!""Is her life in danger?" George asked, standing next to Jane."Fortunately, we removed it in time. Her Majesty will be fine." Saying this, the physician immediately began treating the wound.George remained standing beside the bed, watching with a cold, deep gaze. The physician cut open the back of Jane's robes. "Protect His Majesty!" Karlsen shouted, standing in front of the king.George rose to his feet, overlooking everything without a trace of panic. The same could not be said for the others in the hall. Chaos erupted as people scrambled to find places to hide."Escort Lady Teressa out first!" George commanded.Hearing this, Dina felt a chill in her heart.Gloria's first thought was her daughter, but Robin forcefully pulled her away, scolding, "There are plenty of guards!"Jane was no stranger to assassination attempts. Her keen eyes scanned the hall, sensing that if this were a well-planned attack, the arrows were merely a distraction, meant to disorient. The real killing blow would come from an unexpected place.Suddenly, she saw it.A man dressed as a chamberlain was using the chaos as cover, hiding behind a pillar, a concealed dart aimed directly at the king.Jane's composure wavered for the first time. Seated on the throne, George carefully read through the petition, not missing a single word. After a while, he lifted his gaze to look at Wendy.Jane lowered her gaze to maintain a respectful posture. "I have no idea who brought this petition into the palace or why it was placed inside Lady Rachel's festival gift," she said.Wilhelmina looked at Wendy in surprise. She had informed Wendy that Rachel planned to tamper with Edward's festival gift.It wasn't surprising that Wendy had interfered with the other festival gifts, causing chaos to divert suspicion from herself. That much, Wilhelmina had expected. But the petition–this was beyond her expectations. To place it inside Rachel's gift was truly a ruthless strategy. In this moment, she could only feel relieved that she hadn't made an enemy of Wendy.Though Wilhelmina had realized it much later, she still cooperated seamlessly with Wendy."Your Majesty, if you hadn't ordered us to open our festival gifts, this petition would have
