CH74 - Kyla's POV

2024-10-29 19:42:56I don’t know how long I had been unconscious, but the moment I woke up, I could feel my whole body aching all over. The next thing I noticed was the cold, hard floor on which they had dumped me.
Slowly, I tried to get to my feet, but the pain in my chest caused me to gasp and fall back down. It would take a while before my body healed itself from the onslaught the alpha had rained down on me, but that was the least of my concerns now.
I tried to focus my gaze so that I could see my surroundings. Everything was still blurry and the place they had put me in was dark. Eventually, my eyes adjusted to the surroundings and my heart sank.
I was alive, but that was a trivial comfort to the prison I had now found myself in. There was no bed here, not even a toilet for me to use. There was nothing but the cold, hard floor and the thick bars of the cell.

It feels like an eternity has passed me by in this Goddess-awful place with this bastard of a man. And yet, in reality, it has only been a few hours at most since the alpha showed up to visit me. I wish he would take the hint that I won’t give up any information that might put Cedric at risk.Slowly, the alpha walked around me. Each footstep was slow and deliberate. He had taken out a cigarette and lit the tip before inhaling. He kneeled in front of me again, blowing the smoke into my face, and causing me to cough.“Now,” he began. His voice was a gradual drawl. “Perhaps you’d like to answer an easier question?” As he spoke, he moved the hand with the cigarette towards me. I flinched, not knowing what he might do with it.A smile crossed the alpha’s lips, but he merely took the chain hanging from my collar and pulled me closer to his face. I can’t believe it has taken us this long. My fear for Kyla’s safety has only grown since we got that picture of her. Knowing she is at least alive gave me hope we could rescue her, yet there has been no progress in our attempts.I’ve been beside myself for hours. What could that man even want with Kyla? I get dragged along to the meeting spot in the middle of the passway. The alpha has no plans to hand me over, but I know he will use me as a shield against the two. Several of his warriors come along with him, as well as a scout or two.The alpha pauses within five feet of Cedric and Dereck and nods to his scout. “Make sure they’re not hiding anyone nearby,” he orders with a low growl in his throat.Dereck and Cedric allow the scout to go past them, though they look tense. I wish I could convince them to forget me, but part of me knows they won’t listen to me. With Cedric throwing threats around, I quickly notice the bodyguard and the alpha have become distracted. If I’m going to get out of this alive and stop being a liability for my loved ones, then I need to act now.Since I’m already on my side, I don’t have to move much to carry out my plan. That way, I won’t get noticed until I’ve hit the alpha in a spot that should slow him down just enough. I just hope these chains give me enough reach to pull it off.I bring in my knees, making it appear as though I’m just cowering. I almost don’t believe my own eyes, ears and touch. I finally have my mate back. That is what I thought at first, but within seconds, Vukasin had caught up with us. He always had been swift-footed, even in his human form.As soon as I saw Kyla thrashing out at him, I knew she had regained some will to free herself. I had been fearful at first, thinking Vukasin had broken her spirit. I couldn’t let Vukasin do anything more to my mate, and this time, I was determined to protect her.Eventually, Vukasin took this fight seriously. As we return home, I hold Kyla close to my chest. She must have been through so much and I can’t help but notice how much lighter she has become. Did that bastard starve her on top of everything else? That my poor mate is full of wounds and burns tells me all that I need to know.I can hear her breathing softly. A sign that she is still alive, but exhausted enough to have fallen asleep. I’m just glad we had been victorious in at least this much. Had we not saved her, what would her fate have been?Finally, we make it back to our home and, although the pack is anxious and mournful from the loss of life, they still offer congratulations on the victory. I wish I could tell them the threat from Vukasin was over at last, but the truth of the matter was that as soon as he recovered, he would be even worse than before.As we entered the packhouse, Anita rushed over to us. “She needs medical attention!” She claimed and motioned for me to follow.

I would be lying if I said I hadn’t hated every moment of taking Vukasin’s life, but I had made the decision and could not back down once I had made it. I wanted to be seen as Cedric’s equal, as a leader, and not just his mate.As I helped drag Vukasin’s corpse through the street and back to the main battle. Cedric waited for me to stand next to him before he nodded. It takes me a while before I can get them clear enough to where I can see them again. Going back to find Dereck or Joey would waste too much time and we couldn’t afford to wait any longer. We would miss our chance to end this quickly if I messed around trying to find and free up someone stronger.I watched Cedric chase Vukasin until he could guide him in the direction I had suggested. I knew my plan would work. It just meant I had to be careful when blocking the opposite way. This fight has gone on for far too long, but I hadn’t expected it to be so easy. Even with the others flanking our enemy from the other side, this isn’t a straightforward battle. Vukasin has escaped my claws once again, though he hasn’t gotten far from me this time. However, I now have to deal with one of his warriors before I can continue my battle with him.I’m starting to think Vukasin is trying to tire me out by forcing me to fight as many of his warriors as he can throw at me. It is a cunning plan. To make me so tired that he can beat me easier. However, I know what he is trying to do, so I do the same. I have a warrior battle with him in return.I have to hand it to him. Vukasin is a formidable foe. However, dragging this fight out like this only makes it worse for both sides. We’ve already lost a fair number of warriors each and I can bet more lives will be lost. That might be an acceptable sacrifice to Vukasin, but not to me.

Their regrouping didn’t take long either after the two I had distracted had returned.
