Olivia Burns

“The baby glow looks really good on you Miss Burns,” Meredith the handmaiden praised and I smiled shyly at her chubby reflection in the mirror, eyeing the red that colored my pale cheeks lightly.

Three days. That was how long it had been since Nikolai’s public rejection of Raya, how long it had been since he began visiting me regularly, only to ask how the child was fairing.

What I couldn't help noticing was how his eyes lingered longer each time, the cool pools of gray moving over my breasts and the bare skin of my neck down to my baby bump, and the round globes of my ass when I turned around.

His wolf was hungry, craving its lost mate, and it was my job to make sure I kept it satisfied.

I could hear my mother’s voice in my head already, her white, powdery face grinning with pride in my mind’s eye as her shock of bright red hair fell messily over my face.

“Do you know how the reject is fairing?” I whispered conspiratorially at the maid who looked surprised for a moment,

NIKOLAIThe singing of bush crickets ricocheted from one ear to the other, and it was not painless.Their enthusiastic singing was eerie in the dark cluster of the moonlit woods. Fucking hell, what was I doing out here? How long had I let my wolf run? I wasn't sure.“Athena’s cunt lips,” I cursed loudly when the sound of my back cracking as I moved echoed in the treeline and I sighed heavily, tasting the dried blood in my mouth and wiping it clean before stretching to my feet.I squinted at the swats of sunlight-yellow that stabbed through my hair from the spaces in the trees and looked down to see that I was still in my clothes from last night. A suit shirt and dress pants, complete with the Armani leather shoes I owned that were now stained with brown creases across the tip.I sighed again, running a hand through my hair as I began the long walk back home, all the while trying to remember what on earth I had been chasing and if it was all a dream.#“Are you ready? Your Highness? Th

Alpha TophMy heart still pounded in my chest as I gripped the tree bark hard enough that my claws dug through the hardwood into the soft belly of the tree, gutting it.It was all I could do to keep my scent and sweat from dropping onto his face as I gazed at my brother lying in a pool of dried leaves stained with something that looked suspiciously like blood. What the hell? He wasn't supposed to be here! I dug in tighter when he groaned awake suddenly, freezing for a moment when he stared right up at where I was crouched and damned near pouncing on him when I feared that he had seen me before his eyes drifted away from me and I released a breath I hadn't realized I had been holding.“Shit on a fucking bagel and shove it in my mouth,” I swore lowly when my brother’s giant wolf rocked back and forth before barreling off through the trees, back toward his castle.I had kept my eyes on him since my recovery, more from my own selfish perversions than from Gobar’s heated orders. It was som

Raya Banks“Are you ready? The party’s about to start,” Some of the old maidens I had met earlier in the day crowed loudly and I turned to see them sticking their heads through the door.I hadn't slept a wink the other night, or the nights since Nikolai’s public rejection. It had been one nightmare after the other, dark twisted things reaching for me until I snapped awake, gasping and panting and covered in my own sweat.“Almost done! I'll be out in a minute,” I called back, smiling at the plump, powdery faces of the geisha wolves. They were part of the king’s royal court, the mid-ranks that handled the castle’s accounts and they had welcomed me in their circle.Ymir, the tallest of the group had caught me crying on the stairs one night, I had heard her creep up behind me but had been too tired to care. Until she wrapped her hands around me.“It's okay beethí, child...” She sighed as I struggled for breath, wheezing and ugly crying until my body shuddered in her arms, spent.I told he

NIKOLAIThe minute our eyes met, I inhaled sharply, feeling arousal stir in my groin as I took in the ravishing beauty that was Raya Banks. She looked different, sadder than before, with the hopeful spark that had been in her eyes gone. She was wearing a mermaid green dress that hugged her curves in every way imaginable, and it was all I could do to tear my eyes away from the milky globes of her cleavage.“You miss her don't you tough guy,” Igor’s derisive snort sounded in my ear as he came up to stand behind me and I snapped my eyes away from her, realizing too late that she had been smiling at me.Shit, would she think I was an asshole?“Shut up,” I hissed at him, striding forward with a fixed smile on my face as the crowd went wild, cheering and throwing flowers and teeth at the red carpet that I deftly avoided. It felt like a thousand tiny ants were crawling over my skin and hair as I climbed the short stairs to the throne dias slowly, my shoulders straight and tense as a live wir

OLIVIA BURNSThe last time had been close, too close for comfort. I placed my hand daintily on the pale neck that was reflected in the large mirror. The Queen’s mirror. It felt so surreal that I almost couldn't believe I had finally managed it. “Queen in seven days, I'm a bloody rockstar mother,” I panted, forcing myself to smile in the mirror, to be happy.I had seen Nikolai’s stormy gray eyes when he had made the announcement, when everyone’s eyes were on him and his were supposed to be on me, he was searching the room for another woman. It seemed as if everything I tried I couldn't get rid of Raya Banks. Or Igor. The blonde rake of a man had become a problem, one of my biggest fears. Imagine if he told the King that the child I was carrying was not his heir? That the bairn belonged to Igor instead? Because of one foolish mistake of a one-night stand?“No, it cannot happen!” I wheezed breathlessly, shaking my head, and was startled when I heard the rustle of handmaidens moving thin

Raya Banks“Raya! Raya come back!” Ymir’s frantic voice called me as I shouldered blindly through the crowd with my heart hammering in my chest.I struggled for breath, unable to feel anything besides the way my heart squeezed painfully in my chest. A royal wedding with Olivia? How could he do this to me? I had known that Nikolai hated me, but I hadn’t thought he would have gone this far! To marry that nasty woman and shun me publicly! In front of everyone!“Raya! Hold up!” The elderly maiden groaned, her loud panting echoing behind me as I wheezed and braced myself against my knees, gasping for breath between my desperate sobs.“What the hell is wrong with you chile? You just about gave me a bloody heart attack!” Ymir shrieked raggedly, her soft hands snapping around my shoulder before I shrugged her off, shaking my head bitterly as I spun to face her.“Why can't I ever get it right? Why does it always have to be me?”I screamed in a guttural voice, feeling the bitter thickness hook

NIKOLAIThe wind whipped my hair violently about my face as the horse galloped down the dirt road to the villages.“Seven hells,” I growled, feeling my fangs snap together in anger as my eyes trailed over the haunting landscape of the stone-walled village.“Saints! It's a bloody massacre!” Gallagher hummed from his horse beside me and I swallowed thickly, the sharp fume of smoke clogging my throat and latching on to my nose hairs like little rabid insects. The dark grey fumes rose from the settlements like some post-apocalyptic volcano and my heart sputtered in my chest as I pumped my fist high in the air, ordering the soldiers to dock the horses as we neared the village gates.“Gallagher! Round up the survivors, the sentries take them back to my castle! The rest of the infantry! Follow me!” I thundered, shifting into my wolf and pounding through the broken gates hanging off their hinges, immediately getting slapped in the face by the carnage.I slowed, trotting on my hind legs as I l

Raya BanksMy heart sped up the second I caught sight of Nikolai’s midnight-black horse speeding through the trees before shooting past the gates of the castle as the battlement guards up on the walls cheered and hooked appreciatively.“He's here! Quick! To the chambers! I'll run down and see where that scallywag redhead is!” Ymir cheered excitedly from her perch beside me, slamming her binoculars down on the window sill with enough force that I feared it would break.I leaped down from the window, glancing about the room in a panic and patting down my dark hair in the mirror, trying to ignore the red that was currently stinging my cheeks.“This is going to work,” I whispered to myself, just before the old maid poked her curly white hair through the door, hooking her thumbs up to signal me.I hurried down the stairs with my gown in my hands, feeling my breath hitch in my throat when I broke out into the dark, open foyer, mumbling a greeting back at the guards that bowed at me.Why did

Raya BanksI hadn't stopped glancing anxiously through the wide carriage windows after we left until my breath caught in my throat when I saw the looming buildings of the castle up ahead and leaned back in my seat, suddenly feeling my pulse jump.“It's okay Raya, I'm here...I won't let anyone hurt you.” Nikolai growled and I felt something warm unravel inside me at the possessive tone of his voice.I nodded, searching his stormy gray eyes once more before looking out the window again at the wet plains of the fields off to the sides. And Olivia? I wanted to ask, but something stopped me and I shook the thought out of my head, resting on his shoulder instead as the giant gate of the castle creaked open and I marveled at the cheers that boomed and erupted.“Holy shit,” I whispered and my cheeks warmed to hear Nikolai laugh beside me. Gosh, I never wanted him to stop laughing! There were rows and rows of ruddy-faced wolves holding large bouquets that they threw like confetti at the carri

NikolaiThe voices, by Jove! The rush of shadows and voices crowded into my head as I wove the moonstone around my neck must have made me mad!I roared, feeling my rage amplify and baring my teeth with bloodlust as I turned my body to see Alpha Toph charging toward me like a bat straight from hell.“You bloody prick! I'm going to annihilate you once and for all!” He bellowed, his lumpy muscled frame flying into the air before I surged forward to meet him halfway, almost stumbling when Raya’s soft whisper carried to my ears.I love you, I love you, I love you. I inhaled sharply, throwing everything I had into the fight as our bodies slammed meatily together before we landed heavily on the floor and I pushed against the bracket of his arms. His disfigured eyes stared at me from behind the barricade with such hate and venom that I threw away all the guilt I had swirling inside me.“Not if I kill you first.” I sneered, jamming my knee into his sides and watching him crumple in on himself

Watch out!” I shrieked loudly, feeling my gut wrench with fear as I saw the king get knocked down by Alpha Toph’s hulking frame.“You let a woman be your weakness again Nikolai, it's almost as if you never LEARN! Wasn't Olivia’s betrayal all those years ago enough for you?” Alpha Toph gurgled in a voice that sounded like rushing water and I felt chills wash over me as I tried to struggle to my feet before one of the shadowlings slammed their heavy foot flat on my back, knocking the breath out of me.“No!” I cried out, winded, and stretched a hand to the huge gray wolf that was being mauled ferociously by Alpha Toph’s half-human, half-beast frame. A trap! The beast had set a trap for the king and now he was cut in between. I knew almost immediately what he had planned to do but there was almost no way to warn Alpha Nikolai as he crossed the field to rescue me.Had I been his weakness? How did he find me? Olivia BurnsIt was the silence that haunted me the most now. The empty hours from dawn to dusk and everything in between, just me and the shadows, and the shadows and me.“You rest up now Miss Burns, His Highness will be back to the Stone Castle in no time.” Meredith’s calming voice rang, making me snap my eyes to her pale oval face that had lifted into an encouraging smile.“Enough, I'm positive ill turn into one of the meadow fishes if you soak my stubs any longer.” I hissed impatiently, feeling my heart squeeze when the woman only smiled, snatching up a dry, white towel from the rack before wrapping my tender feet in it and toweling me off.I sneered at the unhealthy size of the swollen lumps as she massaged them into a reasonable size, and I stirred uneasily in the low plush stool that had been placed in the sunlit room. The King had ordered renovations for me, giant blue ceramic pots with fake gold flowers at the corners of the room that hid the shadowlings from my sight. So close, and yet, so far away.“It doesn't have to be this way Tophas, my mate has no business in our rivalry, let her go.” I deadpanned, hearing the din of my voice as it caught in the wind whipping about us before my brother’s uneven face jerked into an excited smile.I could hear the thud of my heart beating and was aware how fast my breaths rushed out from my chest and yet, I could do nothing but stand and wait. No sudden movements.“But you lie, brother, Raya Banks is my mate too don't you reckon?” Tophas growled, slamming one thick paw that looked like the fingers had been snapped all the way back against Raya’s full cleavage.“Please!” Raya’s desperate wheezes twisted at my heart as I held out a hand, stopping Gallagher’s copper-colored wolf from morphing out and tearing forward. I could sense his agitation, because it was double in my gut, watching the woman I loved so much desperatel

Raya BanksI couldn't stop the shudders from running through my body before the sound of wolves laughing heartily in the distance reached my ears.“Oh God, oh God, help me,” I panted, squeezing my eyes shut and clamping my lips firmly to keep from whimpering when what felt like a tongue licked at the underside of my ass from the stone. The damned thing was alive! Like the stack of bodies in the corner of the room! Wolf zombies, immobile now, no doubt until the dark shadow king Gobar wanted to command them!“A feast! We shall have a feast!” Alpha Toph’s voice boomed in the distance and my body automatically stiffened, still as a rock.It had been some time since he left and the hearty yellow beam I could see beyond the cave opening flaps if I angled my head right had now turned a smokey gray. Alpha TophMy tongue pressed against the uneven ridges of my teeth as I fiddled with the lock of the shadow king’s secret compartment.I had caught a glimpse of the mammoth beast leaving the small shed, the spot on his neck where the blood moonstone hung bare. I knew then that Gobar had to have been hiding it here. He never wore it to hunt.“Come on!” I gritted through clenched teeth, feeling my eyeballs sting as the sweat rolled down from the cliff of my forehead.Everything had begun to feel weird, it was hard enough to feed without tasting the worms from the inside of my mouth in the blood. If I could just get my hands on the dark moonstone I could stop the transformation and have SOME chance of killing the shadow king.Yes! I had to kill him, there was no way in seven hells I would have gone through all the pains to settle for being his eternal stooge! The numbers I tried to spin on the lock didn't make any sense and it was beginning to get dark. I glanced around quickly, catchin

Meredith The Maid“MEREDITH!” My name, I answer it with pride when my mistress calls, but she does not call today. “MEREDIFFTH!” My name, whenever the mistress was in one of her moods and couldn't stand to get the words out nice and proper, her shrill tone seemed to shake me to my very core. She was in one of her moods again as I led her away from the King’s horses, holding the blubbering countess by the hand and helping her climb the stairs until we were behind the safe walls of the familiar quarters.“What time is it Meredith? I haven't had my afternoon tea and all that screaming has made me rather, famished!” Miss Olivia exclaimed and I caught my tongue between my teeth before I could tell her she had taken her lunch already. Thrice.“Of course, I'll send for it M’lady,” I cooed softly, lowering her onto the plush cushion of the high bed and propping her feet too before smothering her with the rich red duvets that had been layered on the foam.“My Merd, what would I do without y

I watched Igor’s blood-spattered head roll quietly down each stone staircase until it toppled in a neat circle and stopped on the floor.I was breathing fast, and heavily, with my fingers shaking on the hilt of the executioner sword I still held tightly in my hand and yet I couldn't manage to shake it off.It was like a part of me had died the moment I held the blade. My fault! It was all my fault. I had let my best man turn into a trait
