Chapter Eleven
John's POV “Welcome lord Bernard,” I took a slight bow, then shook hands with him. “You're doing a good job John. I can see.” The hall was already filled with the other members of the pack, but Jake was no where to be found. “Have you seen Jake?” I turned to Mark, one of my most trusted Betas. “He's gone hunting,” Mark replied. “Hunting? On such an important occasion?” I bit my lips. Reyna walked in, looking very beautiful. I had specifically chosen the dress for her to wear, and just as I had expected, she didn't disappoint me. “Where are the newbies?” Lord Bernard asked as he took his seat by my side. Newbies! That's how they were called. “We're still waiting for the last one.” I called one of the Sentinels and whispered into his ears. After a couple of minutes, Stephanie and the sentinel walked in, and it was time to commence the ceremony. “Have both of them been confirmed to be werewolves?” Lord Bernard asked. “Yes but…one of them is yet to unlock her werewolf potentials in full,” “Yet to unlock her werewolf potentials in full?” Lord Bernard’s eyes opened wide in disbelief. “What's that supposed to mean?” “She's more of a human than a werewolf. She hasn't transformed once,” “Not even on the night of a full moon?” I could see the surprise on Lord's Bernard s eyes. Reyna's case was actually hard to come in terms with. There's never been a werewolf, no matter how dominant her human side is who doesn't transform on the night of a full moon no matter how dominant his or her human side was. “She has to transform before we initiate her into the pack. You of all people should know that.” “I know lord Bernard, but she's a werewolf, I'm certain.” I tried to defend Reyna. “And how do you know that when you haven't seen her transform once? What if she's lying? What if she's spy?” Lord Bernard's voice was barely above a whisper. “She has the ability of healing.” Everyone in the hall were looking at us, wondering what it was that we were whispering between ourselves. “Did you see her heal?” “No I didn't, but Jake did.” “So where's the Jake now?” I suddenly wished Jake was around. He was the one who had stabbed her and had seen her heal. “Well well,” Lord Bernard stood up and crackled his voice. The murmurs in the hall died down and all eyes were fixed on him. I could sense the nervousness in Stephanie and Reyna. “We are here to welcome two newbies into the Lunar Cresent pack and, according to what we all know, we must be sure they are not humans before we proceed with the initiation. So we'll be giving them room to show to us their werewolf sides before admitting them as full fledged members of the pack.” I swallowed hard, unsure of what the outcome will be. “What's your name?” Lord Bernard asked, pointing at Stephanie. “My name is Stephanie Higgins,” “I was told you were found a loner. What happened?” “My pack was attacked by a Lycan king called Marcus. He and his pack members invaded my pack and killed everyone. I was the only one who managed to escape. “Marcus,” the name sent shivers down the spines of everyone present in the hall. “We're sorry about your loss. But that alone can't convince us that you're indeed one of us. So make us believe that you're indeed a werewolf,” lord Bernard instructed. Stephanie stepped forward and with everyone watching, her nails turned to claws and her eyes became wolf-like. “You're one of us,” Lord Bernard smiled, asking her to step aside so that Reyna can show everyone her own werewolf side. Reyna became more nervous than I had anticipated, and I could tell exactly what was going on in her head. “What's your name?” Lord Bernard asked. “My name is Reyna Richards.” “You're a loner. What happened to your pack?” “Nothing.” “What do you mean by nothing?” Lord Bernard’s brow furrowed. There was another murmur among members of the pack. “Silence!” The room immediately fell silent at my orders. “I was rejected and left at the mercy of the enemies,” Reyna spoke softly, the pain of her being rejected by her own father evident in her voice. “Why did your pack reject you?” Lord Bernard pressed, even if I already hinted him. It was not in my place to speak even if I was the alpha of the pack. “I already passed the age of giving expression to my wolf form, but I've never transformed once. Not even on the night of a full moon.” The room became more silent as everyone kept their gaze fixed on Reyna. “So there's no way you can convince us that you're a werewolf?” “I’ve tried everything but none of them is working. But I'm a werewolf, I know I am.” I just couldn't take my eyes of Reyna. The confidence with which she was speaking, got everyone surprised. “I was told you were stabbed by Jake, and it got healed almost instantly. How true is that?” Lord Bernard pressed even further. “Yes. Here on my shoulder,” Reyna opened up the shoulder which Jake had stabbed. “So, if we should stab you now you're going to heal up immediately?” “I guess so,” Reyna's eyes met mine. “No don't,” I whispered. Even if I wanted her to convince everyone that she was indeed, a werewolf, I wasn't ready to risk having her stabbed to prove it. I wasn't there when Jake stabbed her and I don't know what had really happened between them. “Get me a dagger,” Lord Bernard instructed. “Don't Reyna, please don't,” but she wasn't looking at me anymore. One of the sentinels came forward with a dagger and handed it over to Lord Bernard. I watched as he pulled it out of its sheath, my fear of seeing Reyna hurt getting the better of me. “Wait!” I stood up.Chapter twelve Reyna's POV“Are you okay?” I heard someone ask from behind me. I turned around and it was Stephanie.I wiped the tears in my eyes, but not before she could notice that I had been crying. I felt humiliated that I couldn't heal from a simple cut.“Let me see,” She took my hands which had been wrapped with a plaster.I was lucky John stood up to prevent the lord from stabbing me, else I'd have been dead.“Instead of stabbing her, why not give her a little cut? We just want to be sure she can heal for sure, right?” John had suggested just before Lord Bernard could think of stabbing me for real.Lord Bernard had taken a brief moment to ponder over John's suggestion.“Very well,” he sighed, after which he took my hand and with everyone watching, he placed a cut on my wrist, and I bled. All eyes were on me waiting for me to heal, but that didn't happen as the bleeding continued.“Call for first aid,” John instructed, and in no time, they were there.“She can't be admitted in
Jake's POV“Why weren't you around for the imitation ceremony earlier?” John asked, as he walked into my room.“What has my presence or absence got to do with the ceremony? And besides, I was trying out some of the new skills I had learnt from Seth.” I grimaced.I expected John to know better that I don't fancy such occasions, especially where the lords would be gathering. It kept reminding me of my misfortune, and how I was deprived of my rightful place as Alpha of the pack.“Every other member of the pack was present, but you, my own brother, you weren't there.” He reached out for my dagger sheath which was on top of the drawer and tossed it at me, and I gave it a good catch.“Reyna was cut today but she didn't heal,” his voice became softer.I furrowed a brow, and then pulled the dagger from its sheath.“I thought you said she healed the other day you stabbed her.”“Yes she did,” I ran my fingers on the sharp edge of the dagger, reminding me of how blood thirsty I could be. There
Marcus' POVThe tension in the room was suffocating. Every face around the table reflected the same frustration, fear, and a thirst for vengeance. Three of my most powerful werewolves had been beaten up— not just beaten up, but humiliated. The rogue responsible had made a spectacle of it, and it was a huge sting on my ego.It wasn't the first time we'd dealt with outsiders, but this? This was different. No one messes with me and goes away with it.I sat at the head of the table, my hands clenched tight in front of me as I listened to the others speak. The meeting had dragged on for nearly an hour, and with every word spoken, my blood boiled hotter."Two dead, Marcus," said Ryan, my second-in-command. His voice was steady, but I could see the barely concealed rage in his eyes. "One more wounded, and the rogue didn't even bother hiding his tracks. It's like he's daring us to come after him.""Daring us?" Jaxon scoffed. "He’s mocking us! He’s mocking *you, Marcus. What kind of wolf dare
Jacob's POVThe sound of my boots crunching on the gravel echoed in the quiet night as I made my way to the old Ridge. It wasn’t much of a place—just an old, run-down tavern on the edge of nowhere—but it had served as neutral ground for years. When you needed a conversation that wouldn’t make its way back to either side, this was the spot.Marcus was already there, sitting in a dark corner booth, a half-full glass of whiskey in front of him. He looked as grim as I’d ever seen him. It wasn’t hard to understand why. His pack had been humiliated, beaten down by some rogue wolf. Marcus didn’t take losses lightly, especially not ones that made him look weak.I made my way over and slid into the seat across from him. His cold eyes flicked up to meet mine, but he didn’t say anything at first, just waited for me to speak. He never had much patience for small talk."Thanks for meeting me," I said, signaling the bartender to bring me a drink. "I heard about your pack. About the attack."His ja
Reyna's POV The night was cool, but there was this surge of restlessness within me. I was still not yet able to understand why I couldn't heal when lord Bernard cut my wrist with the dagger.“She's not one of us,” the voice continued to replay in my head. That was lord Bernard's verdict, and it really made me feel embarrassed.I decided to meet up with Jake and to ask him a couple of questions. I wanted to know if there was something special in the dagger he had used to stab me that had made me heal.I felt like I was losing my mind. Maybe I was, and who knows, maybe, just maybe, that was the reason my father had rejected me. I hurried down the hallway, my heart pounding in my chest as I approached Jake’s room. We haven't seen eyeball to eyeball ever since John returned. I think he has been avoiding me, if not, why didn't he attend the initiation ceremony. When I reached his door, I knocked softly at first, then louder when I got no response. “Jake?” I called out, knocking again, b
Reyna's POV"Stephanie, wait!" I called out, running after her down the hallway. My heart was racing, and I could feel the panic rising in my chest. She’d seen us—seen me and Jake—and I knew exactly what was going through her mind. I had to explain, had to make her understand it wasn’t what it looked like. She didn’t stop at first, just kept walking, her pace brisk and determined. But I kept going, my feet hitting the floor faster until I finally caught up to her, grabbing her arm gently to stop her. “Please, Stephanie,” I said, breathless. “It’s not what you think.”She turned around slowly, and then, she narrowed her eyes, but I could see the judgment in her eyes. Her arms were still crossed over her chest, her eyebrows raised in that way that told me she was not buying any of it.“Really?” she said, her voice cool. “Then why don’t you tell me what’s going on, Reyna? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’ve got some serious explaining to do.”I swallowed hard, trying
Jake's POVI woke up the following morning, feeling much better. For some reason I wasn't feeling the pian from my wounds any more, and all of that happened after Reyna and I kissed again.“Hello bro,” John walked into my room. I buttoned up quickly, just before he could notice I was hurt.“Hey,” I raised my brow wondering what it was he wanted from me again.“I know we've not really been seeing each other in the eye lately.” John was beginning to sound like the big brother he was, and for some reasons I had missed this version of him.“Is there something you want to tell me?” I pulled the curtains open, and I could see some of the omegas having their training. A few changelings were there too and I just waved them.“I'm talking to you bro…”“Of course I'm listening,” I turned to face him. “What exactly do you want?”“It's Reyna.”I looked at him, almost surprised. “Did something happen to Reyna?” I imagined. I had probably forgotten what Seth told me regarding the request to have Rey
John's POV “Are you okay?” Reyna walked towards me. I was standing by the pool, and then I could see the light of the moon reflecting on the calm waters.I have been in deep thoughts after the conversation with Jake and I really felt bad with everything he said to me.I have tried everything I could to make us live as the good brothers we used to be before the father's death and the whole alpha saga came into the picture.“Reyna,” I managed a smile. She was looking really beautiful. I didn't know if it was just me, but there seemed to be something different about her that I just couldn't understand.“Is something wrong? You don't look so well,” I tried to dismiss her worries, but I wasn't doing a good job, and she could see through me. “Did something happen between you and Jake?”“I'm fine, Reyna. I just probably have a lot to worry about as the alpha of the pack. It will be winter soon and there's a lot that needs to be put in place before the fall.” That was the best excuse I coul
Stephanie’s POVMy palms were damp as I followed John into his bedroom, the soft echo of our footsteps the only sound filling the spacious room. My heart was thudding way too fast, and I couldn’t tell if it was because I was nervous about being alone with him… or something deeper. He stopped by the window, the moonlight spilling across his broad shoulders and casting a silvery glow over the room. Then he turned to me, his eyes catching mine in that intense, grounding way he always had.“How are you feeling tonight?” he asked, voice low, calm… careful.I took a breath. “I’m fine,” I said quickly, then hesitated. “But honestly, I really need to train. I’ve been off lately. My head’s been all over the place.”He chuckled, folding his arms. “That’s the price of being a warrior, Steph. You don’t get to switch your brain off, even when you should.”His smile made something flutter inside my chest, and I found myself smiling back.“Yeah, well,” I muttered, “being a warrior’s overrated someti
Reyna’s POVStephanie leaned against the doorframe, arms folded and a sly smile playing on her lips. “You won’t believe who’s rotting in the dungeon.”I raised a brow from where I was sitting on the edge of my bed. “Who?”“Diane.” She smirked. “Locked up like the traitor she is.”I blinked. My stomach did a little twist, not from fear, but from the overwhelming satisfaction that came with justice being served. “Seriously?”Steph nodded, eyes glinting. “Wanna go see her? Give her a piece of your mind?”I didn’t hesitate. “Hell yes.”We were out of the room and down the hallway in seconds, the sound of our footsteps echoing in the otherwise quiet corridor. The tension that had been clinging to my chest since everything happened seemed to ease with every step. I wasn’t sure what I was going to say to Diane, but I knew one thing for sure,I needed to see her in chains. The moment we entered the dungeon, the stench of mold and rust hit me. The air was cold and damp, but I kept walking, eyes
Jake’s POVThe flames danced in the hearth across the room, casting flickers of gold on the stone walls, but I barely noticed. My mind was running wild, tangled in the mess Diane had left behind. John sat opposite me, arms folded tight across his chest, his jaw tense, frustration radiating off him like heat.“We have to be smart about this,” I said, breaking the silence. “Whatever we do with Diane… we can’t act on impulse. She’s not just some rogue wolf we can toss into the dungeons. She has friends among the elders.”John scoffed, dark eyes narrowing. “So what? We’re supposed to tiptoe around her because of that? Jake, she betrayed us. She handed over sensitive information to Damon and Marcus. If that doesn’t scream ‘traitor,’ I don’t know what does.”“I know what she did.” My tone was calm, but I felt the fire build behind it. “And I’m not saying she walks free. But if we act without council approval, it gives her allies ammunition. They’ll paint us as reckless. Unstable. We can’t a
Reyna's POV Warm sunlight streamed through the room as the sound of soft footsteps pulled me from sleep. My eyelids fluttered open just in time to see Steph yanking the curtains apart, letting the golden glow spill across the walls."Rise and shine, sleepyhead," she teased, turning to face me with a wide grin.I pushed myself up against the pillows, a slow smile spreading across my lips. "Steph," I breathed. She didn't hesitate. In a second, she was beside me, arms wrapped tight around my shoulders. I clung to her just as fiercely, letting the warmth of her presence chase away the last remnants of fear that had clung to me since my return."I'm so glad you're back," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.I pulled back slightly, searching her eyes. "I'm glad to be back."Her gaze softened. "We were all worried about you, Reyna. I was worried about you."A lump formed in my throat. It was still hard to believe I was safe, back in familiar surroundings, surrounded by people who car
John's POV The night air was crisp as I stepped through the front doors of the estate, the weight of exhaustion settling deep in my bones. Steph had been right beside me just moments ago, but before I could say a word, she vanished into the shadows like she always did. She never liked lingering too long, especially after a mission.I rubbed my temples, barely suppressing a groan. The night had been long, and I wasn’t looking forward to whatever came next.A sentinel approached, his expression unreadable. “The elders request an audience with you, Alpha.”I exhaled sharply, already irritated. “Not tonight. Tell them I’ll meet them tomorrow.”The sentinel hesitated but nodded before turning on his heel and disappearing down the hall. I knew pushing off the meeting wouldn’t go over well, but I didn’t care. For once, I just needed a damn moment to breathe.I moved further inside, my steps slowing as I reached Reyna’s door. My hand hovered over the handle, but I hesitated. What was I suppo
Jake's POV The air in the dungeon was thick with the stench of damp stone and decay, the kind of smell that clung to your skin long after you left. I barely noticed it. My focus was locked on the metal door in front of me, the one separating me from Diane. The guards stepped aside as I approached, their expressions unreadable. They knew better than to question why I was here. Everyone knew what Diane had done, the pain she had caused.I pushed the door open.Diane sat in the corner, shackled to the wall. Her once-perfect appearance was in ruins, her hair tangled, her face streaked with dirt and dried blood. She looked up at me, her eyes narrowing before shifting into something unreadable.“Jake,” she murmured, voice hoarse. “Here to let me go?”I let out a dark chuckle before slamming the door shut behind me. “You think this is a rescue mission?”She smirked, though I could see the flicker of doubt in her gaze. “You’ve always been the reasonable one. The quiet one.” She tilted her hea
Stephanie's POV The silence between us wasn’t heavy. It wasn’t awkward or tense. It simply… was.John and I sat side by side on the fallen log, the cool night air wrapping around us. The moon was high, its light filtering through the trees, casting silver threads over the clearing. I focused on the sound of the wind rustling the leaves, on the distant hoot of an owl. Anything but the way John’s presence made my chest feel tight.I wasn’t used to this.Silence, yes. I had spent years locked inside my own head, drowning in the absence of words. But this wasn’t that kind of silence. This was different. This was… safe.I stole a glance at him.John was watching me, his eyes darker than usual under the soft glow of the moon. His expression was unreadable, but there was something in the way he looked at me that made my skin prickle. Not with fear. Not with unease. But with something I wasn’t ready to name. His lips parted, and for a moment, I thought he might speak. But he didn’t. Instead,
John's POV I caught the scent of her hesitation before she even moved.Stephanie’s hand hovered over the doorknob, her shoulders tense. Her breathing was steady, controlled, but I knew better. She was about to bolt.In a flash, I moved, cutting her off before she could step inside. I wasn’t even sure why I did it,only that letting her slip away didn’t feel like an option. She gasped, her eyes widening in shock. “What the hell, John?”I crossed my arms, blocking the door with my body. “Were you planning on running away?”Her lips parted, then pressed into a thin line. “I wasn’t running.”“Then why did you freeze up when you saw me?”Stephanie huffed, crossing her arms. “I wasn’t expecting you to appear out of nowhere like a damn shadow.”I smirked. “Werewolf speed has its perks.”She rolled her eyes and tried to step around me, but I shifted, keeping her in place. She let out a frustrated sigh. “Move, John.”“No.”Her brows knitted together. “Excuse me?”I leaned against the doorframe,
John's POV The hum of the engine filled the silence between Jake and me as I drove through the dimly lit streets. The city blurred past, a mixture of neon lights and shadows, but my focus was elsewhere. Something in my chest felt… off. Like a weight pressing down, not painful, but present. An awareness I couldn’t shake.Jake sat beside me, lost in his own thoughts, his fingers drumming against his knee. I knew what he was thinking about,Reyna. The need to get back to her, to see her safe with his own eyes. I understood that kind of devotion. Or at least, I thought I did.But something had shifted in me.I gripped the wheel tighter, staring at the road ahead. Reyna. The woman I had fought for, bled for, almost died for. The woman I had sworn to protect.Yet, something was missing. The bond, the pull I used to feel toward her, was dull, faded. Not gone, but distant—like a song played from another room, recognizable but no longer mine to claim.I inhaled sharply, forcing my mind to focu
