DARLENE

"He's taking me on a trip to Italy,"

I said into the phone, swinging my legs in the air gently as my eyes darted around the messy room I had turned upside down earlier while I was sorting through my clothes for the trip.

My sudden announcement was met with an eerie silence which had me furrowing my brows. I stopped swinging my legs in the air and sat up on the bed, a bemused look clouding my face.

I had expected a reply after what I just said but all I got in return was silence. An eerie silence I found uncomfortable and unnerving. Laura was nothing but a quiet person.

"Laura?" I called out to her, to be sure I dialed the right number. Even though I knew how stupid that sounds, we were practically talking a few minutes ago and now, she just went all silent on me.

I heard some rustling at her end of the phone which signaled she was still on the call with me, accompanied by her soft exhale.
