“I’m not totally sure. Tired, frustrated, worried, sort of pissed off. I need to figure out my plans a little bit for the next few days, I suspect you probably have some opinions about that too but I’m going to ask you to wait until we at least hear back from Alex about what the guys learned in their investigation. I’m going to withhold all decision making until I have all the information I can possibly get.” I declare. Bellamy huffs out a breath then nods.
“I guess I can hold my tongue for now.” He agrees and I reward him with a smile and a squeeze of his hand before releasing it and reaching for my phone. I turn it on and find several messages in my group chat and a few others. I check the other messages, not prepared to catch up on the vast quantity of messages In the group chat right now.Shaun- Hey, I don’t know when you’ll get this. But I just wanted to check in on you. I hope you’re doing okay. We will make plans with Alpha Kane to discuss everything later today. LetI get ready as fast as possible and practically drag Bellamy downstairs to the kitchen. I want to make up with Megan as fast as I possibly can. I stop in the kitchen doorway, confused when I don’t immediately hear Megan. I can hear her but not see her. A moment later she pops up from the floor. She was apparently kneeling and the bench blocked my view. “Hey! I was just watching the breakfast muffins in the oven. I always overcook them a little so I wanted to keep an eye on them so they would be perfect for you.” Megan smiles at me in an excessively cheerful manner. Okay, that has got to be fake.“Why are you acting happy? You were upset a minute ago.” I ask warily. This level of cheerfulness is almost creepy. Just because I had a single bad night, it doesn’t magically make her hard times go away.“You’re right. I was upset, but then I thought about it while making the mix for these muffins and I’ve decided to forget about being annoyed and look at the bright side. So I
I stare down at my last bit of muffin. “I wouldn’t lie. But it’s probably best if you don’t ask until you’ve already made up your mind. Knowing the answer doesn’t really make anything easier anyway.” I tell her. She considers me for a moment then nods.“I guess so. But you would warn me if I was making a really bad choice again right? Like last time?” She sounds very young and scared. “Of course.” I assure her. “Thanks.”“So does that mean you’re going to text Darrien?” I ask. Megan blushes and eventually nods. She pulls her phone out of the pocket of her jeans and types out a quick message, I have no idea what she writes but she hits send then drops her phone and quickly downs the rest of her food. Only seconds later she gets a message back. She reads it with a small smile and I decide not to push her about it any further today. I’m burning with curiosity about how their relationship unfolds from here, but I’ve learned my lesson about interfering in the past.
“Well, if you Miss Gale can write out a list of anyone you think could have something against you or might dislike you I can look into it further. Alpha Kane I already have your watch list but if you have any further names to add I can look into them as well. I will also arrange to interview Miss Gale’s neighbours in case anyone has seen anyone suspicious loitering around. We will talk to your coworkers too, just in case. Although Aaron hasn’t noticed anyone unusual at your workplace, it is hard to be sure since it is a public place and the type of place to have regular customers. It wouldn’t be hard for someone to be there regularly without standing out as unusual.” He explains. Bellamy frowns. “You need to stop going to work.” He comments and my eyebrows fly up to my hairline.“Excuse me?” I demand. He looks at me like I’m missing something obvious. “We can discuss it later.” He adds, glancing at the other people present. I nod slowly, crossing my arms across my ches
Bellamy growls and I turn to him with eyebrows raised. “She’s disrespectful.” He grumbles. I shrug.“She’s busy. She has a hard job and doesn’t waste time on niceties. I like her.” I conclude. He tilts his head.“I believe she likes you too actually. She doesn’t usually give out her number. People have to book her through her assistant who generally chases off the time wasters.” “Ah that makes sense. I’m kind of flattered that she approved of me.” I smile. “I still don’t like her attitude though. If she were anyone else… or less skilled…” He trails off. I cross my arms over my chest.“Speaking of attitudes. You’ve been irritable since you came upstairs to get me. Bossy too. I am not loving it. Is something wrong?” Bellamy sits on the edge of the desk and leans his hands on his knees, sighing. “You’re right. I’m just frustrated. I want to DO something to fix this and I find I’m just sitting around uselessly. I can’t even comfort you properly becau
I glance around Bellamy’s office. “Do you have more work to do today or are you free now?” I ask. Bellamy grimaces, pulling a hand through his hair. “I have a bit more to do. I definitely haven’t been as focussed today as I would like.” He admits. “Eh, that’s fair. Why don’t you try and finish up and then we can make something easy for dinner?” I suggest. “Will you stay while I work?” Bellamy asks hopefully and I agree. “Sure, why not?” I plop myself down in my recliner and lay it back as far as it goes. I then start watching random videos on my phone. After a minute or so though I find myself in the notes app writing down ideas, pros and cons about the Alpha female role. I might not be ready yet, but I can work on getting ready. Bellamy finishes his work pretty fast and then we make cold meat sandwiches for dinner, neither of us feeling up to doing anything complicated. Megan eats out. I didn’t even realise she was going out but she must have left at t
I jolt awake. I sit up, confused and disoriented. I’m sweating with my heart racing. Why do I feel like I just ran a marathon? I look around for Bellamy but the bed is empty. I probably slept late again. I was pretty tired. Actually, I still feel tired. I close my eyes and take a few deep breaths to steady my heart rate a little. As I do this, I remember flickers of a dream. A nightmare? I don’t know what it was about, but when I try to remember I think of a little girl. She looks really small, probably younger than Logan. He’s eleven so maybe eight or nine? The dream girl had shoulder length, white-blonde hair and pale eyes, maybe even as light as mine. But what really sticks out is that she was crying. I don’t know why, I can’t remember anything else. I don’t usually have nightmares like this. It’s strange, a girl crying is sad, but somehow it’s hitting me really hard, it was terrifying, or maybe she was terrified? What a strange dream. Ugh, where is Bellamy? I kind of don’t want
“Your leave? I know. You have two weeks of leave saved up and a few sick days. We don’t usually let people take annual leave without notice though… which is why I applied for your leave three weeks ago. It starts today by the way.” She says cheerfully. “You are an angel Amber. I swear you keep the whole place running.” I compliment her. I can practically feel her delight through the phone. I remember she complained to me once that people are always mad when she doesn’t predict something and they get caught by surprise, but don’t appreciate it when she does. So since then, I’ve been making more of an effort to acknowledge her special contributions at work. “I know.” She says proudly. She pauses a moment before asking.“Ryann, is everything okay with you? I haven’t seen much, I only really can see the parts of your life that directly affect me, so basically your work related stuff. But you’ve been a bit off lately. You had that time when you were all depressed, then you
I pull away from Bellamy and stare. He wants me to stay… like forever stay? That’s why he’s so anxious for me to settle in more? Well… I don’t know how to answer that. I like my home, and having Maggie for a neighbour, seeing Logan regularly and being able to walk to work. I couldn’t do that from here. Although I know that Bellamy is also hoping I’ll accept being his mate completely at which point I really can’t imagine I’d be able to keep my job and still fulfil all the new responsibilities that would be expected of me. Not sure how I feel about that either. I mean it’s not like I’ve ever wanted to be a waitress together. But it’s my job. I applied, interviewed and got the job all on my own. Having a new job with new responsibilities when my only qualification is that I’m seeing the Alpha seems a bit like… cheating? Then again, isn’t dating someone like a really long interview anyway? Like Bellamy is interviewing for the job of his partner. It’s not like he hasn’t had other ‘applic
“Well, I think that it might actually be nice having an extra person around the house. Extra security and company. Besides, you spend most of your time here anyway. Might as well save you the commute. That is, as long as no one else has any objection?” I say pointedly looking at Megan. Sure, Bellamy could object but I already know that he won’t. Megan briefly makes eye contact with me, gives a slight nod, then finds something to stare at on the ceiling. She is clearly trying to look like she doesn’t care but she is blushing bright red. True to form, Darrien is watching her closely trying to work out how she really feels about my suggestion. Realising that she isn’t going to provide any input, he decides to push it a little. “Megan? I would like to hear your opinion. I am still courting you and I don’t want to screw anything up by making a decision like this without your input.” Darrien says clearly. His voice is mostly calm with just the slightest hint of anxiety as he monitors her r
I wake up late in the morning, it might even be early afternoon. I wriggle around a little which prompts Bellamy to do the same, he is apparently already awake. He raises a finger to his lips to shush me before I speak and I can see why. Kiara is still sleeping, lying in the bed between us. She is still loosely holding onto my arm, even in sleep. I slowly disentangle myself from her light grip and slide out of bed. Bellamy follows, clearly doing his best not to jostle her and wake her up. She definitely needs the sleep. She was restless for a good part of the night and almost definitely was having nightmares, but she seems like she’s sleeping soundly now. My own sleep was blissfully quiet. No visions or anything thank goodness. I’m looking forward to having several weeks of steady sleep and so help me if anything tragic or dramatic happens for the next few weeks then whoever is responsible should probably be terrified of me. We step into the hallway to talk without disturbing Kiara.
I cross my arms in irritation. “Kiara would never! How would she even do that? She’s just a kid!” I object. Dr Dae rolls her eyes at me.“Oh calm yourself girl. I’m not saying she chose to murder anyone. I assume that she was forced to comply somehow. You’ll have to ask the girl when she’s ready to talk. As for the how, the child is a Reaper.” She says it as if it’s obvious but it really isn’t. I know that Reapers exist, but they’re the kind of Magic that most people have heard of but no one has ever met. I suppose Kiara’s dad must have been a Reaper too and why the MRO was so secretive about her markings. Most people are kind of scared of Reapers, they’re kind of the boogeymen of our society. Mostly because they can kill on a whim. All it takes is one touch and they can free your soul from your body. Obviously with no soul you die, and I guess your soul moves on to wherever souls go when you pass on. I suppose that a Reaper would make sense for the representative of Atropos. Her add
Since Kiara probably isn’t up to braving the stairs and she really doesn’t want to be carried around everywhere, we decide to ask Dr Dae to come up to the bedroom. It’s actually kind of weird having so many people in here. Bellamy is a fairly private person, he doesn’t generally invite people to hang out in his… our room. Dr Dae shuffles in clutching her usual bag. I’m surprised that Bellamy isn’t carrying it for her because it looks kind of heavy, but I suspect that she wouldn’t hand it over anyway. I immediately greet her.“Thank you so much for your help. Your contact has become a great friend and she’s a huge part of the reason we were able to find Kiara here.” I nudge Kiara gently with my elbow and give her a little smile. She looks very small and delicate in the oversized, mismatched clothes with her hair dripping down her shoulders. She’s so pale that the bruises on her skin stand out and look even worse than they actually are. Dr Dae gives me a half nod of acknowledgement then
We all turn to face Alex in confusion. I glance up at Bellamy to see if he has any idea what’s going on but he looks just as lost as the rest of us. I continue to stroke Kiara’s hair trying to keep her calm. “Explain.” Bellamy says firmly. Alex flushes red under the attention of everyone in the room. “Uh, well. I assisted Miss Gale in updating her registration with the MRO, and uh, since her position is one of… well almost authority, over the fate’s representatives the updated registration reflects this. So she should be able to make decisions about Kiara’s care like an Alpha would for their Shifters or like a Coven leader would for their Witches. Admittedly it’s a very small group of Magics, but according to the Magic Registration Office, she is in charge of it.” He explains, his voice starts off weak but gets stronger as he becomes more confident in what he’s saying. The police seem a little stunned but I guess Alex isn’t technically wrong. If Kiara were a Shifter, her Alpha would
When we pull up to the house, there’s a police car waiting. There are two cops standing by it, one looks bored and irritated and the other has a fake ‘customer service’ type smile plastered on his face that I know well from experience. Yeah neither of these guys want to be here. They’re probably pissed that we made them come down here. Not to mention uncomfortable being in the Shifter compound. Non-Shifters aren’t invited here often, although I suppose that isn’t exactly true anymore with all our new friends stopping by regularly. Standing beside them looking awkward and uncomfortable is Alex. I bet they’ve been taking their impatience out on him. I narrow my eyes at them and prepare myself. One snotty comment and I am going to tear into them, it’s been a long night. Bellamy parks the car and I wait for him to get out. He speaks with the police briefly and Alex escorts them inside the house. Bellamy returns and opens the door next to Kiara. “Hey, can I help you get inside? The police
As we step outside, I’m confused to find that I actually have no idea where we are. I really was just running and following the tracking spell. I don’t know how far I ran. It’s a good thing the others are here to bring back the cars because I would be wandering all night trying to find my way back. I’m also fairly sure that I left my phone in the car when I jumped out in a hurry. Kiara clutches my hand tightly as the cars pull up on the street in front of us. “Megan, Darrien. You stay here and speak to the police when they arrive. Direct further questions to me. Shaun, you stay with them too.” Bellamy directs as Shaun hops out the car. At Megan’s insistence he stays a good couple of metres away from us.“Yes Alpha Kane.” He responds cheerfully. Aaron and Rio also climb out of the vehicles. Rio stops to chat with one of the other Shifters whose name I still don’t know. Aaron immediately approaches me. Actually a better way to phrase it is that he storms over. He looks almost angry. Or
Darrien is the closest to her and he sees her at the same time I do. He takes a step towards her and she whimpers in fear. He freezes and backs away slowly, trying not to startle her. I gesture for everyone else to stay back and take a few steps closer. I stop a good metre away from the little table and then slowly lower myself to the floor. Kneeling down so that I can see her properly. Kiara is covered in soot and I can see little trails of tears smudging around on her face. She is still crying and whimpering. I am careful to keep my voice gentle and calm. “Kiara?” I call her name. She doesn’t answer or look up, but her whimpering quiets a little and I can see her tensing up like she’s listening carefully. “Kiara sweetheart. You’re safe now. You can come out. We can get some something to eat, you can have a nice bath and some clean clothes. How does that sound?” I try to sound soothing. Her crying stops and she looks up at me with wide, teary, red-rimmed eyes. She doesn’t
Look, I’m no fighter and the Shifters move way faster than I can even properly process in this stressful situation. I watched the Shifter woman leap towards the redhead (I have got to learn these people’s names!) and the next thing I know, both women are screaming and the living room is lit up with blue flames that are steadily growing. I watch as Shaun and Darrien leap at the Shifter woman and help her tear off her burning shirt. Bellamy takes the chance to shift and a few moments later his large black cat form is launching towards the Witch in an attempt to knock her down. He pulls back at the last second as flames light up in front of him, spreading and essentially splitting the room in half with us on one side and the Witch on the other. She’s completely trapped, both by us and the fire which is steadily going out of control. There is smoke in the air making it hard to see what’s going on and the smoke in the air is making it difficult to breathe. My throat is so dry and my lung
