Chapter 8 Ending

Most of the people present knew that Lindsey and I were dating and that we were supposed to get married soon.

I walked up to her and, without a word, threw the bouquet I had prepared to the ground.

My expression was darkened. When she opened her mouth to explain, I slapped her hard. The force sent her tumbling to the floor, and her face twisted in pain.

"Lindsey, you and your family know full well how I've treated you. I have nothing to feel guilty about. But how dare you do this to me?" I demanded.

"Honey, I—"

"Save it. We're done."

To amplify the drama of the moment, I squeezed out a few tears. I wasn't even sure if I was acting or if I genuinely felt the bitterness and sorrow.

Lindsey's parents rushed onto the stage. They stumbled as they grabbed my arm and began pleading for another chance for their daughter.

"Mr. and Mrs. Stirling, I'm sorry. But it's over between us."

Then I pushed open the door, and the sunlight outside shone on my face. The air smelled like freedom.
