(Diane)

Clubs aren’t really my scene, but listening to my girlfriends gush over Alpha Darius’ long-lost son as if he were some celebrity heartthrob was almost entertaining enough to make me forget my worries. Victor, my fiancé, had ghosted me for a whole day now, that never happened before.

Victor is not my mate, but I couldn’t care less. My parents aren’t fated mates either and they are the happiest couple I knew. Victor came into my life three years ago and made me as happy as my Alpha father made my Luna mother. That’s all that matters to me.

“…Lucian’s here tonight! They say he’s drop-dead gorgeous. Like, way hotter than any guy from our pack.” My friend Maya said, practically bouncing in her seat.

“Gorgeous and mysterious,” chimed in Lila, swirling her drink. “You know the rumors, right? His mom was Alpha Darius’s true mate, and she died protecting him from his stepmother.” She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a dramatic whisper.

“They say Luna Celeste tried to have both of them killed out of jealousy.”

I took another sip of my drink, pretending not to care, though I was mildly intrigued. Lucian’s return had been the talk of the pack for weeks.

A child presumed dead, raised by rogues, and now reunited with the father he’d been stolen from—it was the kind of tragic, scandalous tale that spread like wildfire.

“Please, you two are eating up gossip like it’s gospel,” I said with a smirk. “For all we know, he’s probably some rogue with a half-decent smile and a chip on his shoulder.”

“You’re just worried he will steal Victor’s thunder,” Maya teased, nudging me.

"Hardly," I said, rolling my eyes as I set my drink down, hating the comparison. "What’s he even doing here anyways? This place doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of place someone from his pack would show up."

Maya leaned in closer, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "That's the thing, though! Lucian’s not like his father’s pack. They’re so... uptight. You know the type—nose-in-the-air, anti-human, living deep in the woods like some medieval reenactment. They barely tolerate humans, let alone hang out at places like this."

"Right," Lila chimed in, swirling the straw in her drink. "Alpha Darius’s pack would never lower themselves to walk into a club like this. They think humans are beneath them—filthy, weak, and corrupting their ‘pure’ ways of life. It’s all tradition and isolation with those guys. No fun at all."

I tilted my head, feigning disinterest while internally absorbing every word. "And yet Lucian’s here. How very rebellious of him."

"Exactly!" Maya nodded enthusiastically. "He’s, like, the *opposite* of his father’s pack. A literal rogue. Word is he doesn’t even want to be part of Darius’s world. He’s been spotted in human cities, blending in, working with them, even living among them. Can you imagine anyone from a pack like that choosing to live like us?"

Lila smirked, leaning back in her chair. "It’s kind of hot if you think about it. The lone wolf who refuses to play by the rules. Meanwhile, our pack..." She motioned around the buzzing club, filled with wolves and humans mingling seamlessly. "We’ve always been about this kind of life. Interacting with humans, enjoying their world. Honestly, I don’t know how the other packs survive without this. Sounds... boring."

"Boring is putting it lightly," I said, shaking my head. "Living in isolation, hating humans for no reason, and following rules that were made centuries ago? Hard pass. I’ll take this life any day."

"But that’s why Lucian stands out," Maya said, her voice dreamy. "He’s not boring. He doesn’t fit the mold. He’s not like his father, and he’s not like us either. He’s... different."

"Different doesn’t always mean good," I shot back, trying not to let my curiosity get the better of me. Victor is not someone different. He is the one who made me feel safe. I am not saying I have father issue, far from it, but he does remind me so much of my father…

"Whatever," Maya said, brushing me off. "You can keep pretending you don’t care, but I bet the second you see him, you’ll be just as obsessed as the rest of us."

"Don’t hold your breath," I replied with a smirk, though my heartbeat was just a little faster at the thought. A wolf like Lucian, raised by rogues and rejecting the rigid, human-loathing traditions of his father’s pack... He was a walking contradiction. And I wasn’t sure if that intrigued me or made me wary.

I looked down and smiled when my phone lit up and Victor’s name showed up on the screen.

“If you’d Excuse me, Victor’s waiting for me upstairs,” I said, standing up and smoothing down my dress. “Enjoy the night without me, ladies.”

“Oh, come on! You and Victor are too perfect,” Lila groaned, rolling her eyes. “I want a fiancé who can’t leave me alone for five minutes!”

“You mean you want *any* fiancé,” Maya shot back, earning a playful slap on the arm from Lila.

I chuckled and waved them off, making my way toward the elevators. The bass from the club’s music thumped under my heels, but just as I reached the hallway, a tall figure stepped into my path.

I stumbled back with all the grace of a baby deer on roller skates, my heel catching on the carpeted floor. My arms flailed wildly as I tried to stay upright, one hand narrowly missing a poorly placed potted plant.

Just as I thought I’d hit the floor in a spectacular display of clumsiness, a firm hand shot out and steadied me by the elbow.

“Careful,” a deep, smooth voice said, laced with the faintest hint of amusement.

“Do you make a habit of bowling people over, or am I just lucky?” he asked, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.

“I—uh—” I started, still trying to find my footing.

“Speechless,” he said, clearly enjoying himself. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

I straightened up, brushing imaginary dust off my dress to cover my flustered state.

“Actually, I think I tripped over your ego,” I shot back, the words slipping out before I could stop them.

His smirk widened, radiating pure confidence. “Lucian,” he said, his deep voice calm and self-assured, like he expected the name alone to mean something.

I stopped short, my pulse quickening as I looked up at him. So this was really him—the long-lost son of Alpha Darius, the one everyone couldn’t stop talking about.

I noticed the sheer perfection of his features. His dark hair was slightly tousled, framing a chiseled face with sharp cheekbones and piercing gray eyes that seemed to pin me in place.

The air seemed to shift between us, crackling with tension. My wolf Nina stirred, more alert than she’d ever been, and that’s when it hit me—I knew exactly what this was.

The mate bond.

(Diane)So this is how the mate bond feels. A rush of energy, a pull like gravity tightening around us, and an almost maddening awareness of him. But I wasn’t about to let it sway me. Sure, he was ridiculously perfect, but I wasn’t some love-struck fool who’d drop everything at the first spark of fate. I had a life, plans, and a fiancé waiting for me upstairs. This bond? It could wait.Lucian’s gaze held mine, his lips curling into a small, knowing smirk. He held out a room key, his hand brushing mine as he offered it. Sparks shot up my arm at the contact, making me pull back instinctively.“You’re my mate,” he said, his voice low but full of certainty. I raised an eyebrow, forcing myself to stay calm even as my heart raced. “Take a number and get in line, sweetheart,” I said coolly, flashing the engagement ring on my finger in front of his gray eyes. “I’m otherwise occupied right now.” I let the key slip from my hand, letting it fall to the floor between us before stepping p

(Diane)I clenched my fists, digging my nails into my palms to keep from lunging at Savannah. I wasn’t about to give them the satisfaction of seeing me lose control. Instead, I straightened my spine, forcing myself to meet Victor’s gaze.“So this is who you are,” I said coldly, my voice steadier than I thought it would be. “A liar. A cheat. A coward.”Victor just stares at me, his expression unreadable, his silence louder than any excuse or justification he could have mustered. My chest burns, anger and betrayal clawing at me, but before I can say another word, a familiar, sharp tug pulls at my mind. The mind-link. My father. “What is it, Dad?” I respond, forcing my voice to sound light, chipper even. I can’t let him hear the strain in my tone. He’s been under so much pressure lately, dealing with setbacks in the pack’s business dealings. Victor, has been helping him, but the weight of it all has been wearing him down. (Diane)My heart twists painfully at the words. My mother—my strong, unshakable mother—had never looked so broken, so utterly lost. Her grief has consumed her, leaving no room for reason or recognition. I take a cautious step closer, keeping my hands visible and my movements slow. “Mom, please,” I pleaded. “Her snarl turns into a growl, her whole body trembling as though she’s on the verge of shifting. (Diane)The room tilted for a moment, my head swimming with rage and disbelief. I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to focus on his face, to memorize every line and curve of the man who had just declared war on everything I held dear. “You won’t get away with this,” I said, my voice low and venomous. He laughed—a short, mocking sound that grated against my frayed nerves. “Oh, sweet girl,” he said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk. “I already have.”Tears sting my eyes, hot and relentless, but I refuse to let them fall. My gaze locks on Victor's face, cold and unyielding, unwilling to show him even a shred of weakness. My father’s voice echoes faintly in my mind, urging me to be strong. He leans back in the chair, his smug expression twisting into something darker, something vile. “Listen carefully to what will happen now, my dear fiancée.” The word drips with mockery, as though he relishes twisting the knife deeper into my heart. “You and your mother…” He pau

(Diane)The day of my release dawns cold and bleak, but the chill outside is nothing compared to the ice in my veins. Five years—that’s how long I’ve been locked away for taking out my ex-fiancé’s left eye. Or, more accurately, my half-brother’s eye. The memory of that moment still burns in my mind. The shock on his face. The rush of rage that overtook me. The sickening clarity of realizing the man I once loved—over my fated mate, no less—was my sibling.Every time I think back to that moment, it feels like my chest is being crushed. Was it worth it? Yes. But it cost me everything—my freedom, my family, and even my wolf. The first day in prison, they poisoned me with wolfsbane—brutal, unrelenting doses that stripped away my connection to Nina. I screamed for hours, begged her to stay, but the bond broke. Losing her was worse than the bars, worse than the jeers and stares of the other inmates. It was like losing a limb, a part of my soul. For the first few years, life was a nightma

(Diane)Lucian remained motionless, his piercing gaze boring into me with a cold detachment that sent shivers down my spine. He leaned back against the leather couch, the casualness of the gesture at odds with the intensity in his eyes. His arms rested lazily on the backrest, but there was nothing relaxed about him. His body was coiled tight, like a predator ready to pounce, and the air between us crackled with tension.I, however, swayed on my feet, clutching the doorframe for support as the drug continued its relentless assault on my body. “You are my one last chance. My vision wavered, and my breaths came shallow and quick, desperation clinging to every word.Five years have passed, but the bond between mates is impossible to forget. (Diane)I sank into the steaming tub, the water swallowing me up like a long-lost lover. For a moment, I just lay there, letting the warmth seep into my bones and chase away five years’ worth of grime, regret, and bad decisions. A proper bath. God, how I’d missed this.Prison didn’t exactly cater to princesses. The closest I’d come to a bath in the past five years was standing under a showerhead that trickled lukewarm water—when it worked—and tried to dodge the occasional cockroach drop-in. Soap was a luxury item traded like currency, and privacy? Ha! That was for people who hadn’t stabbed someone with a sharpened toothbrush.I slid deeper into the tub, my knees poking out like pale little islands. The bubbles shimmered in the dim light, and I couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous this moment felt. A spoiled princess, scrubbing away her sins in a stranger’s fancy tub. The irony wasn’t lost on me.Reaching for the soap, I paused to marvel at it. Real soap. Not the slimy governmen

(Diane)The morning light filters through the curtains, soft but unforgiving. Every inch of my body feels the weight of last night’s passion, a lingering soreness that’s both a reminder of Lucian’s intensity and a strange sort of comfort. Nina feels stronger—like it’s been stirred awake from a long, restless slumber. Each brush of the sheets against my skin makes me acutely aware of the changes coursing through me.Lucian moves around the room with practiced ease, the sound of him pulling on his clothes grounding me just enough to keep my thoughts from spiraling. But they’re still there, gnawing at me. The information I learned yesterday refuses to leave me in peace. Should I do it? Should I involve him?“Victor’s brother can be a great weapon if I want my revenge quickly,” I mutter aloud, my voice hoarse from last night. (Lucian)I watched as Diane moved around the room with a calmness that should’ve been reassuring, but it wasn’t. She looked like she had nothing to hide, which only stirred a frustration deep in my chest. I didn’t want her to panic, not really, but part of me wished for some crack in her armor—something to show she cared beyond the walls of duty. To her, I was just an employer. And that knowledge gnawed at me.For five years, I’d followed her every movement, every breath, even when she thought no one was watching. When they locked her up and pumped her full of wolfsbane, I couldn’t save her—not then. It was a calculated decision, one that tore at me every single day since. If I’d intervened, I’d have exposed myself to the enemies circling me like vultures. I hated myself for it, but I vowed no one would hurt her again. Not while I was still breathing. The problem was, Diane had no idea just how many enemies we both had. Last night, Savannah's father had cornered me, spitting venom-

(Diane)“A brother?” I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper.“Yes,” Archer confirmed, his tone steady, as if he had just told me it might rain tomorrow. “Victor has a younger brother.”My mind raced, trying to process this unexpected revelation. Victor—the name that carried weight like a thunderstorm in my world—had a sibling? It felt surreal, like hearing a dragon had a pet goldfish.“Which brings us to why I chose this restaurant,” Archer continued, leaning back in his chair and casually gesturing with his glass of water. “Look over there.”I followed his eyeline to the grand piano at the center of the room. A young man sat there, fingers gliding effortlessly across the keys. The music was hauntingly beautiful, filling the space with a melody that somehow felt both intimate and otherworldly. He was young, maybe just over twenty, with a presence that made him impossible to ignore. His features were strikingly familiar: the sharp cheekbones, the angular jawline, the dark, piercin

They weren't too happy about it, but what are they gonna do? Cry about it?”Selene let out a loud laugh. “Damn, girl. You’ve got more guts than me. I’d have been shaking in my heels. So, let me guess, Lucian came swooping in like some kind of knight in sweaty armor?”“Something like that,” I admitted, leaning back in my seat.“Well,” Selene said, her tone shifting to something far too smug for my comfort, “sounds like he’s a pretty good sugar daddy. I mean, the guy’s built like a Greek god and he clearly adores you. What’s not to love?”I groaned, half laughing. “Stop. He’s not my sugar daddy.”“Oh, please. He totally is. (Diane)The tension in the air was palpable as the Alpha stood before Victor, his expression cold and unyielding. “I will not be happy if there are any incidents tonight in my territory,” Alpha Gregory said, his voice sharp enough to cut steel.Victor gave a tight smile, one that didn’t reach his eyes. “Diane and I have solved our problems. It’s all water under the bridge now.”Alpha Gregory’s gaze lingered on him, assessing, before giving a curt nod. “Good. I’ll have a word with Miss Diane.” Without another word, he motioned for Victor to leave.Victor, ever the obedient one in the presence of true power, inclined his head and strode off. I watched him retreat, his back rigid with barely concealed irritation. The old Alpha didn’t waste a moment. His focus turned to me, his presence as heavy as a storm cloud. “I may not approve of my daughter’s taste in men,” he said, his tone biting, “but I will not let her get hurt in any way. You can’t.”His laughter is soft but cuts through the silence like a blade. “You always did have a sharp tongue, sister. Pity it never knows when to stop.” His emphasis on the word “sister” is deliberate, dripping with venom.I roll my eyes, unwilling to play into his games. “I don’t have anything to say to you, Victor.”He steps closer, his shadow stretching across the polished marble floor toward me. “I wasn’t responsible for the loss of your wolf.”His words hit harder than I expect, but I keep my expression neutral. “Does it matter? You’re still the reason behind it.”His eyes narrow, and for the first time, his mask of smug indifference slips. “You blame me, yet you forget who truly took everything from you.

(Diane)Victor’s face is a mask of cold indifference, but I know better. He’s furious. The muscle in his jaw tightens ever so slightly, his hands clasped just a little too tightly in his lap. He’s trying his best to keep it together, but the seething storm beneath his composed surface is visible to someone who knows him as well as I do.It makes me feel a strange sense of satisfaction. After everything I just overheard in the restroom—the insults, the mocking laughter, the accusations—I thought I’d feel humiliated. Instead, seeing Victor like this, distressed and barely keeping his temper in check, is almost cathartic.I left that restroom with my head high, shoulders squared, and my lip gloss freshly reapplied. If they thought their petty words could break me, they were wrong. In fact, the sight of their smug faces faltering when I walked out—untouched, unfazed, and composed—was more than enough revenge for now.Let them whisper. Let them scurry away like frightened mice. (Victor) Savannah is drinking furiously beside me, the stem of her wine glass trembling slightly in her grip. It’s the third one she’s downed in the last twenty minutes, and I can practically feel the tension radiating off her. She hasn’t stopped glaring at Diane since she stepped into the banquet hall, arm-in-arm with Lucian.“She’s smug,” Savannah mutters under her breath, her voice low but dripping with venom. “Look at her. She thinks she’s untouchable now.”I follow her gaze to where Diane sits at the head of the table beside Lucian. She’s perfectly composed, a faint smile playing on her lips as she exchanges polite words with one of the elders. The rubies around her neck catch the light, gleaming like drops of blood.“She’s not untouchable,” I reply, keeping my voice calm despite the storm brewing inside me.But Savannah’s insecurities have been heightened since Diane’s release, and today, they’re at an all-time high. (Diane)We arrived at the grandiose pack house of Savannah’s family fashionably late. The grandeur of the place wasn’t lost on me—the towering marble pillars, glittering chandeliers, and perfectly polished floors screamed wealth and tradition. The moment Lucian and I stepped into the banquet hall, all eyes turned to us. Whispers rippled through the crowd, their curiosity, judgment, and shock practically tangible. Savannah stood near the center of the room, a champagne flute in hand, her expression frozen in disbelief. Her carefully applied smile faltered, and for a moment, her shock turned into something closer to rage.Victor was next to her, his dark eyes immediately locking onto me. His jaw clenched, and I could see the flicker of something murderous in his gaze. Nina stirred uneasily inside me, her presence stronger now than it had been in years.“I need a moment,” I whispered to Lucian, keeping my voice low enough that no one else could hear. He turned to me, his sharp features
