“I actually thought you’d be much different-looking in person,” Xavier said to his private detective while he swirled a glass of wine in his hand.

“How so? You thought I’d be taller?” Private, as he was known asked with a smirk. That was usually the first thing people said whenever they found out about his job or saw him face to face for the first time.

“Definitely. And i thought you’d be more mysterious generally,” Xavier completed.

“I get that a lot,” he said with a chuckle. “Why did you ask to meet me in person?”

Xavier shrugged. “I realized I’d never seen the man that knows almost all my secrets and knows where to find out the rest.”

“I never said you couldn’t meet me. I’m not a hitman. People knowing my identity does not directly put me in danger,” Private said.

Xavier downed his eighth glass of wine that night and began to pour another.

“I suppose I just enjoyed the mystery,” Xavier slurred.

“Oh just forget it. I know you already know what I look like. You ran a background

Thanks so much for helping me out, Carla. It really means a lot,” Charlotte said as she arranged the room where she would spend the night. “Hey. We used to best friends. This is the least I can do,” Carla said while helping her friend. Charlotte smiled weakly and went back to what she was doing. “Besides, I know you’re going to get enough out of the divorce,” Carla said with a wink. “I’m just playing my cards right.” Charlotte’s forced smile became a grimace after she heard those words. “Relax, jeez,” Carla said. “I was only joking.” “I know.” Even though she knew her friend was only joking, it still stung to think about what the future held for her. Would she really divorce him? Was she even allowed to? Their marriage hadn’t even lasted for up to three months and according to their arrangement, they could only get divorced after two years. “Let me fix us something to eat,” Carla said as she walked out of the room and left Charlotte to settle down. Had she overreacted by walk

“Their marriage isn’t real!” Carla whisper-yelled into the phone at the other side of the house while Charlotte slept. “What?” Jonah asked. “It’s crazy,” she chuckled. “They managed to fool everyone. He just married her to change his reputation for the better. What a sad thing to do.” Jonah pursed his lips as he absorbed what Carla was saying. “Where did you get this information from?” He asked doubtful. Carla frowned. “Do you think I just made it up? Charlotte told me herself, just an hour ago before she went to bed.” “Hmm. That makes sense,” Jonah said. “I always wondered when she got the chance to build a friendship with him not to talk of marrying him. Did you get a recording, anything we can use to back up the claim?” There was a pause. “You didn’t tell me I had to do that.” “You idiot!” Jonah cursed in his mind. “How else are we supposed to convince people it’s true?” He asked out loud. Jonah was frustrated. Nothing he did was working. Slowly, he was beginning to lose

“Is there something you need?” Carla asked Charlotte when she entered the room and saw her going into the kitchen. “No,” Charlotte whispered. “I mean yes. Very hot tea.” “Stay here, sugar. I’ll go get it for you,” she said sweetly. Charlotte nodded and stayed by the dining room table. She kept hitting the table absentmindedly. She was in big trouble. Just a few minutes ago, she had overhead Carla on a call with someone discussing her husband. From the little she had heard, the only reason Carla was doing this was for them. As Charlotte heard her friend singing in the kitchen while she waited for the water for her tea to boil, her hands tightened in rage. That thing that always caused people to betray her was back again and now, the only friend she thought she had was literally selling her off to god knows who. She hated herself in that moment. How had she been dumb enough to reveal all those things about her husband to him? She had no idea who her friend had been talking to, but

“I have to find her,” Xavier said. “It hasn’t even been a full day,” Private said dismissively. “Just give it time. Let Carlos do his thing.” “She’s going to flare up when she sees him,” Xavier groaned, shaking his head. “Stop drinking, boss,” Private said when Xavier took yet another swig, this time of liquor. “You have to forget about this and focus on other things for a while,” Private advised. “Piss off!” Xavier cursed, standing up. “You’re not my therapist. Don’t tell me what to do. I’m going there whether you approve or not.” “Sir…” Xavier didn’t stand there to let him finish. He walked out of the living room where they had been discussing and went into the house in search of his keys. When he was dressed, he went downstairs and almost fell over twice. Grunting, he picked up his phone and dialed Carlos, completely ignoring his detective who fortunately remained silent. “Hello, boss,” he greeted. “Come to the house. I have somewhere I need you to take me,” he instructed.

The ride home was silent and uncomfortable. Charlotte opened the car door and sat by the passenger side without once looking behind at Xavier. Xavier, not wanting to push things past their limit and send her storming out of the car now he had only just got her, remained silent at the back of the car. Carlos, fortunately did not try to make small talk, but that only meant there was a thick tension that hung in the air among them. Maybe it was even for the better. Xavier looked like shit and he knew it. Let Charlotte deal with one disappointment after the next. They reached home quickly enough and Carlos parked the car in the garage. He was the first to come down, but when the rest did, he said his goodbyes and left. Now it was only the two of them. Charlotte entered the house without a word. Some of the workers had come out of the house and were staring at them like fools. Xavier was irritated, but the headache he was beginning to spout, plus the strong urge to throw up kept him

“Just breathe in, Charlotte,” Xavier said, holding his wife down by her shoulders. “You can do this.” Charlotte nodded and did as he asked before following him into the crimes unit of the police station. The detective who came to meet them was really nice, or maybe he was just pretending because of what he stood to gain from Xavier. Either way, he was easy to talk to and that was what Charlotte needed. “So I’ve seen the details of the case from your file and your lawyer has contacted me,” the man said. “To push this forward, we’ll have to question the doctor who gave you those drugs. He’s already in custody and I plan to question him today. I believe we’ll get more from him. Will you like to be present while he’s being questioned? You’ll also get the chance to meet him one on one but the option is still up to you.” Charlotte glanced at Xavier for a moment and he lightly squeezed her hand. She turned to the detective and nodded. “Okay,” he said, standing up and arranging the files

“I didn’t do any of that!” The doctor yelled back. “I was framed. Someone framed me!” “I’ll advise you to sit down,” the detective said with a bored expression on his face. “That’s not why we’re here. We’re here to discuss your involvement in Mrs Roman’s case.” “That has nothing to do with me,” the doctor argued, sitting back down. “I already told you. She came in with her husband and asked for birth control pills which I gave them. Why would he sue me now for something I have no idea about.” “Oh Jonah Roman isn’t the one suing you,” the detective assured him. “It’s Mr Xavier Roman.” A look of confused terror clouded the doctor’s face. “The richest man in…” he began. “What’s his business with…” “Oh he’s married to Mrs Charlotte now. You didn’t know?” The detective said, enjoying the terrified look that marred the doctor’s face. “I’ll advise you just confess to all you know because we already have all the evidence. Mr Xavier’s private detectives were able to find out everything y

Since Jonah had escaped the country, all the police could do was ask for an extradition. Charlotte blamed herself for it. If she hadn’t opened her big mouth to tell Clara the things she had told her, Jonah would have never known he was about to be arrested. Jonah’s family was kept under constant supervision which was the only better option besides arresting them for hiding him. Xavier could have made that possible. The court procession made national news for days. The doctor had made sure to pull everyone else involved with him since he was going down. Top politicians, businessmen, prominent men and even some women were dragged for being a part of his deal. Several of them pled not guilty and were able to overrule the evidence set against them because they had the money to do so, but the sting was already there. No one doubted one single name that was mentioned by the doctor. Charlotte could half be satisfied with that conclusion. She got to meet the doctor one and one and asked h

“It’s time for bed, Caleb. Let’s go,” Charlotte told Caleb with her arms crossed over her chest, giving him no room to argue. “Just let me win this game…” he argued absently, more focused on the game he was playing on his iPad. “You’ve spent your extra fifteen minutes,” she said, taking the device out of his grasp. He frowned, but conceded in the end. “Fine.” As Charlotte tucked him into bed, she couldn’t imagine how the times had changed. It had been six months since Laura had been taken away, her parents had been released and since she had started running her own business. Caleb had started therapy again, and it had definitely worked. These days, he spoke so often and did whatever he wanted to do that it was hard to believe he had been the same mute boy from months ago. He had just turned four, but the topic of his birth mother never came up fortunately. He seemed to blend right in, just as sweet and annoying as any other four year old boy. “I love you mommy,” he wh

When Charlotte saw Jonah being led out by a prison ward officer, she froze and started to wonder what she had been so scared about. He looked nothing like he did before. He had slimmed down to an almost unrecognizable state and his face looked like he had permanently lost the ability to smile. He walked with the slouch of someone that had given up on life in general. Charlotte doubted that whatever he was going through had happened in that prison in such a short time. “You can wait for me,” Charlotte whispered to Carlos who reluctantly left her side when he understood. “Hi,” Jonah said when he was sitting opposite her. He tried to smile, but it ended up looking like a grimace. He couldn’t meet her eyes. “Hi,” she said simply. She couldn’t let him see she pitied him. “How have you been?” He managed to ask. “You look good.” She couldn’t say the same for him. “Why did you call me here, Jonah?” “Straight to the point like always, huh?” He said with something she suspec

Xavier could only relax comfortably when they were back on the jet and on their way back to California. He could finally let himself be convinced that his dream had been nothing more than that. It hadn’t been a sign of anything, because it had gone on perfectly with no dramatic appearances from anyone. Unfortunately, the thought of one day running into Laura again came often to him and disoriented him. However, he always pushed that possibility away to the back of his mind. He had run a background check on the psych ward Don had placed her and from his research, it was a very exclusive place, so her chances of leaving were lower than zero. It was like a madhouse for wealthy people to drop off their family members who had lost it through drug use of whatever means. Their security was so prioritized that it was practically impossible to get in or get out unless the very owner of the establishment permitted. There was also no possible way Laura could bribe anyone there. It was afte

“Xavier, wake up! Wake up!” The sound of the female voice calling out to him sounded so distant at first, but the hand violently shaking his shoulders brought him back to consciousness. He was breathing fast, as his eyes got accustomed to the light around him, his chest heaving rapidly. “Are you okay?” Charlotte asked him, peering into his eyes as she touched the sides of his face. He could see the fear in her eyes as she studied him. “Charlotte,” he whispered, holding her arms and wrapping her in a tight hug. She was alive, here in front of him. “You’re alive.” “Yeah,” she said uncertainly, hugging him back. “Did anyone kill me?” She asked with a chuckle. He finally pulled out of the hug and glanced around. They were still in the jet, on their way to Orlando. He had just had a bad dream. “Where’s Caleb?” He asked. “Right here,” she said, pointing at a part of the jet where a small makeshift bed had been made for Caleb to lie on. “Is everything okay?” “Yeah,

After bidding Kate and her family goodbye, Xavier and Kate had to take the journey back, while consoling Caleb, who couldn’t understand why the twins had to leave without him. It was a Saturday, and for the first time in such a long time, Xavier had a free day. They all decided to spend the day together, to make up for Caleb’s friends leaving. Charlotte was extremely happy. She chatted and laughed all the way to the four seasons Orlando, where they decided to spend the day with their son, since he had seen a video about it online and wouldn’t shut up about going there. She held Caleb’s shoulders during takeoff in Xavier’s private jet, more to distract herself than him. No matter how often she rode in the jet, she still got jittery when they had to go anywhere in it. She had made an appointment with Dr Anna that morning and she couldn’t wait to finally carry out the surgery the week after. “Are we really going to Orlando?” Caleb asked, peering out of the window of the jet.

The ride home was mostly silent, with Xavier at the backseat, pondering on all that had happened that day while Carlos drove them home, shooting glances at his boss from time to time. “How was your break?” Xavier asked all of a sudden and Carlos cleared his throat. “Great. Thanks again for it. I really needed it,” he said with a smile. “How did it feel to have an actual conversation with her after so long?” Carlos sighed. “Not as bad as I thought. I actually feel better. Thanks for advising me to do it. We cleared some things out. She was mature about it and that’s that.” Xavier nodded and looked out the window at the trees that were zooming past. He remembered when Carlos had come to him for help when having to see Kate after the history they had was threatening to drive him insane. He had advised him to take a break, and then discuss with her when he was ready. It seemed to have worked. Carlos looked like himself again. It had been weird to find out that there had been a

“When will you come back, daddy?” Caleb’s little voice came over the phone and Xavier smiled. He could picture his son standing next to Charlotte and holding the phone to his ear with both his hands. “I’ll be there this night, I promise,” he replied. From the corner of his eye, he saw Private trying to get his attention. “Take care of mom for me, okay? I’ll see you soon.” “Bye daddy,” Caleb said and Xavier nodded before he ended the call. “What’s up?” He asked Private. “She’s causing a scene, boss. She’s yelling at everyone and she even pushed her brother and broke a glass on the doctor’s head when he tried to sedate her,” Private told him. There was an urgency in his private investigator’s voice as he reported to him, but there was also a hint of amusement in his tone. Xavier rolled his eyes and walked past him toward the ward he had left to answer his wife’s call. “Why was there glass next to her in the first place?” He asked no one in particular when he enterrés t

“My daddy used to beat my mommy before that woman took me and told she’s my real mommy,” Caleb explained the best way he could. “He told me he’s not my real daddy and that my mommy sold me to him.” “Wait, wait,” Charlotte told him. She had no idea what he was talking about and the more he spoke, the more confused she became. None of what he was saying made any sense. At this point, he was just throwing the words ‘mommy’ and ‘daddy’ around. “Laura, the woman that brought you to us, she’s your mommy, isn’t she?” She asked him slowly, hoping his answers would make sense to her this time. He shook his head. “That’s what she told me and then she brought me here after,” he said. “So you had other parents before she came?” She asked and he nodded. When Charlotte realized he wouldn’t give her an understandable answer, she decided to stop asking him so that he wouldn’t confuse her more. Since Xavier had gone out to find answers, this one might be one of them. She would ask him wh

“Mommy!” Caleb squealed when he saw Charlotte and ran up to her. She carried him up and enveloped him in a tight hug. She was still not used to him calling her ‘mommy’, but hearing it was so natural and calming. Whenever she was with him, she secretly hoped something would happen to Laura or that she would say she didn’t want him again. She didn’t think she would be able to move on if he had to leave to go back to his real mother. “Did you miss me?” She asked, tickling his tummy. “Uh huh,” he replied, laughing and trying to get her hand away from him. Charlotte kissed him on the forehead and carefully set him back on his feet. She held his small hand and allowed him to lead her into the house. She had been in a sour mood after the meeting with her parents, but just a few minutes with Caleb had softened her up. Kate looked at her and smiled. With a playful frown, she nudged Caleb and asked him why he didn’t notice her. He started to laugh. “What did you do today while we were g
