Asteria POV.

I’m laying on my favourite rock, the sun is high in the clear blue sky. The water laps gently against the shore. The ocean is calm. The sun’s rays warm my cold scales as I flick my fin lazily in the water. The ocean, my home, how I miss it. For I know this is just a dream. A drug induced sedation to make me compliant.

“Wakey, wakey little mermaid.” A vibration through the water and a voice I have come to hate. I open my eyes and move my large black fin away from my muzzled face. Looking into the cold and cruel green eyes of the man I made a deal with nine years, three hundred and fifty-one days ago. General Andrew Patterson.

The man who caught me alongside the military and threatened every shifter with death if I didn’t agree to be a lab rat for two years and the remaining eight I was to become an attraction in an aquarium, lovingly called Poseidon’s Underwater Kingdom. I complied and I regret it. The shifters turned their backs on me for my stupidity. They will pay with their blood, same as the humans will.

The floor of the isolation tank moves up with me on top of it. The lid opens as I lay on the cold metal as I shift from siren to human. I look around as blurry figures and distorted voices speak as rough hands grab me. Putting me inside what I believe is a straight jacket as I’m lifted onto a trolley.

Apparently, when I’m secured like this, I remind them of Hannibal Lector, whoever that is. My head rolls forward as I’m moved towards the Underwater Kingdom. Where I do my daily exercise and get gawked at by the humans. I’m not alone in the tank, no I am surrounded by many tropical and colourful fish. Plus two Navy divers armed with harpoon guns. Idiots.

I smile to myself at the memory when I used my compulsion on the scientist and military personnel and watched as they killed each other. Fun times. Their screams make me happy, the look of horror on their faces help me sleep at night.

That day I was knocked out and when I came back around my throat was sore, they had cut my vocal cords. Little do they know they healed. So since then, I am muzzled like a dangerous dog and sedated, making me more complaint. Jokes on them, though. Again, I am now immune to it. But it’s better to act weak and have them believe it so I can escape.

I no longer have my powers or mind link because I’ve been away from the waters for too long. I’m hoping that changes when I run away.

I’m rolled to the edge of an enormous tank unsecured and the muzzle is removed. I open and close my mouth, stretching my jaw from the ache. They lift the trolley and I dive into the warm, tropical water. I scream as I shift. Looking around, I swim high away from the view of the humans.

Placing my hand on the glass, I close my eyes and feel the vibrations of the other sea life in this prison. I feel their pain, their longing to be with their families, and it breaks my heart.

The sound of the killer whales and dolphins fills me. Their loss is evident at their songs of mourning, mourning their calves that died and the families they were taken from.

I will free them and every fish and creature in this wretched place.

Divers jump in and I turn and flash my fangs at them before I dive deeper and swim against the sand. My hand rubs against a shark who is sleeping and I chuckle as its eyes open and he wiggles on the sand forming a sand cloud, now these remind me of pups, always wanting affection and a good scratch under their chins which I will gladly give.

A tapping grabs my attention and I swim closer to see a little girl smiling and waving at me. She points towards me, excitement evident on her little face. I smile back and wave at her as I get closer to the glass. I place my hand on it and she does the same. Not all humans are bad, children are innocent even if their parents aren’t.

“Look it mommy, look it. The mermaid is my friend.” I chuckle at her words and think to myself, oh cutie, I wish I was. But unfortunately, when I leave here, death will be in my wake. I will regain my power and wipe out every human and shifter from the face of the planet. I will rule over a boneyard to exact my revenge.

“Carter, look. I told you this is a fun place to hold...” I know that voice. I turn my head away from the little girl and see her. General Patterson’s daughter. Bethany. Or as I affectionately call her Bitchany. Whore!

This aquarium is run by the military and many benefactors pretending they give a shit about the oceans and those that live in it. I scoff at the hypocrisy. These so-called benefactors will gladly eat fish and then want to save the turtles. Go figure!

Bitchany was eleven when I came here. At first, she was kind, but then she became like her father, cruel and merciless. She is the definition of a mean girl.

Typical, only child born with a silver spoon shame she didn’t choke on it. Mommy and daddy would be so proud to learn she has fucked her a way through the ranks and is responsible for the deaths of countless endangered fish and mammals here.

I wonder who the poor unfortunate soul is this time. I chuckle as I hum the song. Yes, it is played here as well as other songs, but I like this one.

I swim closer to where she is and bang my tail as hard as I can against the glass and she screams, jumping back, clutching her chest and I smile before I laugh at her reaction. Oh, I want to rip her head from her body and feed her to the sharks.

“Bitch, just you wait.” She points at me, and I snarl at her as I move closer to the glass. She moves back again. She knows what I’m capable of and why I have to be sedated, she too, holds scars on her hip and shoulders from when I tried to drown her a few years back.

Barbs had emerged along my tail as I wrapped it around her to pull her further under. I smile at her, but it’s anything but friendly. She remembers what I did to her and was ordered by her father to stay away from the lab. She didn’t listen, but she got more creative with my torture. Which I will pay her back in kind.

I look up and see the man standing behind her. He is tall and muscular. His arms bulge under his white T-shirt his long muscular legs are hugged in jeans, blue eyes dark hair, he is handsome, no way is he a human, he is huge if he is then he must have shifter DNA dormant in his veins. His eyes lock on mine and I know what this means. I see him mouth the word I know will change everything.

This man, this Carter, whoever he is to her, is the child I saved over twenty years ago. He is my mate. I blink as I swim backwards away from the glass. No, this is not happening.

I swim around the tank and he follows me; he needs to leave and Bitchany needs to take him with her. This can’t happen.

“What time do you get off work?” he shouts, but I ignore him. Does he honestly think I’m like the humans who mascaraed as a siren, which are four tanks over? If he does, then the joke is on him. I’m the real fucking deal, not a wannabe.

I swim higher to the surface of the tank and think maybe this could work to my advantage? Maybe he could help me escape, then I can reject him and go home? How will I get him to ask her to bring him to me? I shake my head, no I will have to do this myself. Tonight.

Tonight the institute will be painted red. I will leave this place and return with my army and slaughter everyone.

For the seas are soulless, and so am I.

Carter POV.“Carty, what’s wrong?” Beth asks me as I watch the woman with violet eyes swimming towards the top of the tank. No doubt to rest and get some air.“Carter!” I blink and take a breath. I look at Beth and smile. Who is the woman in the tank? I have been having dreams of a woman with raven hair and violet eyes, and now I’ve found her. Is this destiny? Fate? I’m not sure all I know is I need to get close to her.“Sorry, baby, what did you say?” I smile softly at Beth as she snuggles into my side, but it doesn’t feel right having her in my arms. So I move back and stand beside her instead.“I was saying this room is the perfect backdrop for the engagement party tonight. After all, you are one of the biggest benefactors of the institute.” I grimaced at that. It’s hypercritical that I Carter Montgomery, who is the CEO of Montgomery Fishing Corp, is a benefactor to protect endangered species of marine life.“Yeah, sure. Beth, who is the woman in the tank?” I ask as I jut my chin f

Asteria POV.What the fuck was Fenrir doing there? I shriek as I run fast. Everything moves in a blur as I smell the salt in the ocean’s air. My home, I whimper as I push on harder, faster as I turn and run towards the beach. Gun’s fire behind me, I turn my head and see military vehicles in pursuit. I smirk. The power I lost is slowly returning. I need the water. The waves crash and a rumble of thunder moves across the sky. I smile as my chest heaves. I jump over the barricade and land in the sand. Tears leave my eyes as I run towards the water. More gun fire, I scream as I’m hit but I growl and keep moving. The humans didn’t learn.I run into the water and wade as far as I can. A helicopter hovers overhead and I dive. I keep swimming as the vibration from above moves closer. Divers enter the water. Firing towards me.I shriek as the shift takes over. My legs fuse together, my talons erupt and webbing forms. My gills split across my neck. I dive further down.“I, queen Asteria, the fi

Carter POV.Standing on the beach, I’m shocked at the carnage that surrounds me, the heat of the trucks that are in flames and the bodies on the floor. I move closer just as Fenrir comes back to me.“You said you needed to speak to me. What the fuck is going on?” I shout, and he looks at me with pity.“As you know, shifters are real. She is a siren. Asteria is what we call a mate. She is your soulmate. However, Asteria has just declared war. Not only on the humans, but us, too.” Wait. Why?“You said us. Care to explain?” I ask as I look out towards the ocean, not bothering with the surrounding carnage.“You are a shifter. I am a God, a werewolf who can change also to a Lycan. You would have heard about Gaia.” He says and I nod my head.“I am her father. I am Fenrir. I was the wolf of hell, the harbinger of death. However, I passed the title to her when she turned 18. Asteria POV.What was I thinking when I kissed him? Gods above. I launch out of the water and sit on my favourite rock. This is such a mess. I should have never agreed to any of this. Look where it got me.It got me betrayed by the humans, by the shifters. I should have let the military destroy them all.“Asteria.” I look at the water and see Artemis as she moves closer to me and I burst into tears. She pulls herself up on the rock next to me and we hug each other.I sob like a baby. A sob of pain and relief. The pain of losing Shanti, the relief of knowing Artemis, was ok. The weight of what I did to save those I thought gave a shit about me. I was wrong, so fucking wrong. I paid the ultimate price, doing what I believed was right.I gave up my freedom so they could keep theirs, but the price that I paid was losing the girl I raised. I lost my sanity, my home, my people. All for what? So the other shifters could carry on with their lives blissfully unaware of the suffering that I end

Carter POV.I wake up on a sofa. Fenrir talks to the alpha and his luna. I know them because we have worked together before, but I never thought I would be here because my mate is, one a siren and two a fucking psychopath.“Perla, Perla, where are you going?” Alpha Javier’s voice pulls me back to the present as I watch his luna run outside.“What is happening?” I ask as I watch the luna run faster.“We need to follow her. Something isn’t right. It was like she was in a trance.” Javier runs and shifts into his large black wolf and I stop in my tracks and he looks at me, nods his head and we run. Fenrir’s beast picks me up and throws me and I land on his back on my stomach, winded as I try to catch my breath.“Hang on, Carter, until you shift. You won’t be able to catch up with us.” I hold on to his black fur as we chase after alpha Javier, his pack warriors and beta following behind in their wolf forms. Carter POV.“News just in that sirens are very real and are a threat to everyone. We have reports that sirens have attacked many fishing towns up the east coast. Citizens are reminded to stay away from the areas. No-one knows why these beautiful yet deadly shifters have attacked. But one thing is for sure, they are dangerous. The governments are in talks with the military about the siren threat. We will have more as the story breaks.”I watch the news presenter on the screen as footage is shown of sirens destroying small fishing tows and killing both shifters and human alike. It has been two months since Asteria declared war and she is making good on that threat.“Carter, we need to get your Lycan to come forward. Only you can stop her.” Lycaon says from the chair next to my sofa. I shake my head.“How? She will try to kill me again.” I say as I watch the carnage on the screen. However, Asteria isn’t with them. Asteria POV.We emerge from the water. I close my eyes and call my power forward. The skies darken and the wind picks up. I raise my hands into the sky and shriek so loud it sends vibration through the water. My tail swishes back and forth as I look over the water as my people emerge. I point to the trawler not far from us, and people dive under the waves. I watch with pride as my people launch out of the water as I create mist. Screams sound from the trawler. The scent of blood dances in the wind and I breathe it in with a smirk on my face.I dive below and swim forward at speed and launch up and land on the deck of the boat. Men scream as they are cut down and I look around. When I see a woman holding a harpoon gun, frightened by what she is seeing. When two women move forward, I recognise one as luna Perla. The other looks feral. She throws her spear at me, and I drop Asteria as I stagger back. She attacks, trying to get to Asteria when I kick her, sending her backwards. I growl at her.“She belongs to me. MINE! This madness stops now. The military will not stop until you all are dead. This was the only way.” I say to her as she hisses at me from a crouched position. She chuckles to herself.“You have just doomed us all. When she wakes and she will, she will kill you and all that follows you. You have forced your mate mark on her. That is forbidden. The gods will judge you, and Asteria will be your executioner.” She spits at me she moves closer to me and r

Carter POV.18 Months later.Coming back to the surface after being in my siren form for a few months was strange. Not much had changed, but still it was weird.“It would be the same if you were stuck in Lycan form for that amount of time.” Lykos had said to me when it was taking me a little bit longer to adjust to being back on two legs. But here we are sitting watching the two most important women in our lives.“Lykos, we are truly blessed. Look at them both.” I say with a big smile on my face as we watch Asteria chase after Ione in the palace gardens. Both are wearing matching outfits. Lykos purrs watching our mate and daughter playing. When we came back, everyone was shocked to see not only how much Ione had grew and changed but also the change in myself. I have bulked up in the water. But not overly bulky.I watch as Asteria runs away from Ione, and she chases her mom. With Set beside her, the second we got home, Set pounced on them both. The celebration ended yesterday and I’m glad it did. There are only so many times you can shake hands and give kisses before you become tired of it.Selene and Lycaon congratulated us both, and I decided it was high time we drew a line in the sand and move forward without the hostility. Grated the hostility came from me, but still it was time to move forward.Zeus was still a prick and that will never change. I wasn’t kidding when I said sirens grow quicker. We think once she hits a few years old in siren time that she will slow her growth down. Asteria POV.The elders have been on my ass today, and I’m ready to flip out. According to them, it is not traditional for the luna queen to not wear a ballgown! I laughed at the dress.Even Artemis and my mother laughed as I stood there is this dress that looks all puffy and it’s tight around my chest and neck. Gaia counted the layers to this cloud like dress and counted twenty. I look like a fairy. It’s red and gold and really puffy, as Gaia said. I don’t like it.It weighs a tonne too. When I told the elders, I don’t like it that it wasn’t comfortable; they sneered at me, muttering I was a savage, so I did the only thing I could. I tore it to shreds. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t sit down, and I couldn’t fit through the damn door. Being called a savage was the final straw. So I showed them how savage I could be.So here I am with my females around me as they get me ready. My long, wavy raven hair is down flowing against my lower back. I have my coral crown on my head adorned with

Carter POV.Watching Asteria assert her dominance is always fun to watch. He did deserve it and she is right. Even I didn’t like the way he was looking at Ione. If Asteria hadn’t stepped in to protect her when she did, I would have killed him. Lykos was on the verge of shifting when she put him and the others in their place. The bedroom we are in is nice. The wealth of the Lycans is evident. However, it is pretentious. Yes, I have mansions and top of the line supercars, but this. There is too much gold and reds. I get it furnishings fit for a king and his queen, but this is not what I’m comfortable with and, by the looks of it, neither is Asteria.I understand the palace is filled with history but I would like to make some adjustments, but I doubt the elders will be too pleased with that. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice, but it’s too much.Asteria is standing on the balcony that looks out over the kingdom and beyond that, the ocean. Ione is having a nap and so it is just the two of us f

But this is the royal pack. The palace sits in the middle with houses surrounding it, similar to a packhouse. Wolves and Lycans leave their homes to see what is happening as Carter and I, plus our entourage, walk towards the palace.I keep my head high as Carter carries Ione. The wolves and Lycans bow as we pass, showing their respect to us. My eyes connect with a few and they bow lower. We walk up the steps to the palace and come face to face with what I can only assume are the elders. They bow in respect as Fenrir moves closer to us.“Welcome home your majesty, we’re thrilled that you are here.” One of the dusty old men says not acknowledging me. I ignore the disrespect because if I was to act on it, then he would die.I ignore their conversation as I look around, surveying everything when Carter takes my hand, pulling me out of what I’m doing.“Plea

Asteria POV.There hasn’t been a day of peace since before Ione has been born. Now don’t get me wrong, I love seeing everyone, but is it too much to ask for us just to have time together with just the three of us? The only time we get to ourselves is when it’s bedtime.“Fen, just the man I wanted to see,” Carter says as the wolves take their seats and coo over Ione.“Oh-oh, that sounds ominous. What can I do for you both?” Fen asks with a chuckle and I roll my eyes as I lay Ione on my legs. Her feet against my tummy, as I gently sway my knees from side to side as I make silly faces at her, earning me big giggles from her.“We need your help with running the kingdom, well, looking after the kingdom for a couple of months. Ione will begin her training before the end of next week, and I need to be with both her and Asteria. So, would be the interim ruler while we are away?” Carter asks, and I look up at Fen and smile at him.“I will only do it if I get Ione cuddles.” He says as he stands

Carter POV.Words can’t describe what I had witnessed. The birth of my daughter Ione. Asteria handled it like a pro and I now have more respect for the females in the world. It was scary when she started to death roll, but then she pulled Ione free.I saw her tail before Asteria did; I know she was panicked that Ione may not shift. So she didn’t notice that little detail before she took off like a bat out of hell to get to the surface. But here we are in the living room with a sleeping Ione in my arms. Asteria is back to normal. She appears to be stronger than before. She is breastfeeding her but also supplementing her with blended fish. Gross, I know, but sirens feed their children differently. Hence why they are born with teeth and talons. We have had so many visitors over the past few days and Ione has taken it all in her stride. She is a dream, though. She never cries and Asteria said it’s because siren babies don’t cry. She is content and happy. Lykos is in love with her the same
