Chapter 414

Startled by the unsettling smile, Mark sat up with a start. When he looked over again, the figure at the door had disappeared.

Janet rushed in. "What's wrong?"

His back was drenched with sweat as he pointed outside. "Did you see anything out there?"

She shook her head. "There's nothing outside."

Mark closed his eyes for a moment before looking back at the door. The hallway was deserted in the dead of the night. He shook his head and tried to reassure himself that it was just a figment of his imagination.

"I want you to lie down and keep me company, Jan," Mark said.

Her body went rigid. "The bed is too small for the both of us." Then, she lay down on the fold-out bed beside them and yawned. "I'm so tired. You should try to get some sleep. I'd have been asleep by now if I hadn't had to use the restroom." With that, she closed her eyes.

Mark, on the other hand, was too anxious to sleep. He kept glancing between the door and the window before he succumbed to sleep as dawn broke.
