Bonita stopped the recording she had obtained from a waiter she managed to bribe, then switched her phone to airplane mode before entering the airport. She had made up her mind to leave after all of Mea's words settled in her fragile heart. The recording wasn’t even finished, yet she could already imagine Benjamin swallowing all of Mea’s words as she had.

Mea was right. The truth struck Bonita hard, forcing her to think deeply. She had always found it odd how Benjamin proposed to her at their very first meeting. They had only locked eyes for a few seconds—how could he be so sure he wanted to marry her after such a brief moment? What if they weren’t truly compatible and only realized it after they were married?

Her parents’ failed marriage, which left deep scars in Bonita’s soul, made her question everything even more. How could her father agree to her grandmother’s demands just to avoid her nagging? How did her father eventually grow to love her mother, though it was too late, and yet

She was quite certain Jeremy would cheer at the thought that their mother finally reaped what she had sown.Silence engulfed the room, broken only by the clinking of utensils. Edith ate with an ever-changing expression—at times distant, somber, lost as if reminiscing, and, most of all, exuding a sense of unfamiliarity that Bonita could easily recognize."What have you been doing to support yourself all this time?" Bonita asked after washing the dishes.Edith motioned for her to follow into the dimly lit living room, illuminated only by a reading lamp. She sat on a long sofa facing a small fireplace—smaller than the one in the main living room—and offered Bonita a box of praline chocolates lying on the table.Bonita’s initially hesitant steps turned firm as she realized this wasn’t her mother’s bedroom. "Bonita must have gone somewhere," Jeremy muttered."I saw her packing her suitcase this morning. I thought it was because she was going out with you. I'm sure she wasn’t lying when she said she’d meet you."Melissa's repeated mention of "Bonita looked so beautiful" only deepened Benjamin's guilt. The gift he was supposed to give Bonita weighed heavily in his pocket, just as the guilt burdened his heart. Alongside it was a small memo handed to him by a restaurant server, written in Bonita’s handwriting: I know who you're meeting. I won't interfere.Benjamin didn’t tell Jeremy or Melissa about the memo. He thought Bonita just wanted to avoid him and would come home later in the evening. But as the hours dragged into the early morning and Bonita still hadn’t returned, his worry began to consume him. Her phone had been unre
