Mapping It Out

The three rogues are taken down to the basement and put in three separate cells. One of the Omegas notified Grip, and he is on his way back from the city to interrogate them. If anyone can do it, it’s him. He’ll have them singing like canaries within a few minutes.
That doesn’t stop me from trying, though. I don’t even bother to go back to my room to take a shower, just grab some clothes out of an emergency stash in my office and then head down the stairs to see where we are. The three of them are loud, yelling at my men to let them go, and I listen intently to try to see who sounds the most frightened. I choose the guy in the middle room and head in.
He’s naked, which doesn’t bother either one of us, despite the fact that we are not pack members.

AriaMy mind is made up. I know what I have to do. I go into automatic mode, rushing through the steps I have to follow in order to have the best chance of getting out of here without getting caught. AriaRuby is flying across the open ground, her claws digging into the soft earth and flipping out chunks of grass and dirt with each step. She doesn’t slow for anything. Not large boulders in our way, babbling brooks or wider streams, not even a sharp incline now and again. She runs on, for hours, and when the sun begins to drop below the horizon, I know we have transitioned out of the forests of the north into the mountainous areas further south. If we keep going and actually make it to our homeland, we will be in an area similar to the forest we have just left, but in the south it is swampier. The forests are in the wetlands. AriaRuby doesn’t stop running. She just keeps moving, all through the evening, into the night. By the time she finally finds a place to hunker down for a few hours of sleep, the sun is beginning to rise above the horizon in the distance.It is a smart move, one I cannot fault her for. This way, the night patrols of wolves, the ones we’ve heard howling off in the distance for hours, will be home or in their offices working, like Sebastian will be. I picture him, sitting behind his desk in a suit, looking as handsome as ever, maybe nervously tapping his pen as he wonders what happened to me. He’s probably running interference with his father, trying to convince him it’s not worth it to come after me, that there’s no reason to worry about any agreement he had with my parents since they’re dead.

SebastianEventually, my escorts drop off, one by one, leaving me to return to their homes or whatever else they have to worry about. I am clearly not a threat, and as I cross into other pack lands, I likely fall out of their minds. With any luck, they will alert the other packs ahead of me that I seem to be just crossing through, and as I make my way closer to Aria, I will be unharassed.Flint runs as far as he can before he finally finds a place to settle, mid-afternoon of our second day. He is exhausted, and other than a few sips of water from fresh streams we’ve crossed and a rabbit that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, we haven’t had water or food.I don’t care, though. I am more focused on finding Aria than anything else.

AriaMaria’s words stick me throughout the meal and as I try to sleep in a bed in the large pack house, surrounded by people I haven’t seen in months. I’ve learned that they’ve been surviving here on whatever they can find in the forest and the few supplies they were able to salvage from the village. It’s hard for me to think that anyone has had a tougher time than I did myself since our home was attacked, but it seems like I’ve been mistaken.Sleep isn’t coming, despite how exhausted I am. I lay awake, staring at the ceiling, listening to others in the room snore and shift around on the narrow beds. I didn’t ask where the supplies to build this place came from or the furnishings, but I imagine some of my packmates have taken jobs in one of the nearby human cities and are sending back money.

Aria I can’t believe Sebastian is here, that he came all of this way, for me. As soon as I see him standing there, exhausted, covered in dirt from the forest, but looking unbelievable in only a pair of shorts, I want to launch myself at him, to bury my head in his muscular chest and feel his strong arms around me. But I can’t do that. The fact that he’s here is touching, but it makes no sense. “What do you mean love isn’t enough?” Sebastian asks in response to my comment. “Of course it is. Aria, we will make this work. No matter what.” I am touched that he thinks that’s possible, but I am so confused. I have so many questions. “Why don’t you come back to the pack house, take a shower, get cleaned up, and then we’ll talk?” I ask him. “You’ve got to be exhausted.”
