40. Retreat

"Yes," Nicolas replied. "I'll be fast asleep after this. But, what about you?" You woke up in the middle of the night. "You looked like you were having a nightmare. Do you remember what it was about?"

"No," he said. "I was probably dreaming about my mom or something. I dream sometimes."

Nicolas patted her arm. "Your dreams aren't always a good thing. Maybe it's just imagination, or maybe your mind is trying to protect you."

"Maybe," Dianne agreed. "Or maybe it's something serious. Like something happened to someone who took care of them and they died. I wouldn't have expected that to happen to me when my mother died. But I'm fine now, Nicolas."

"I believe you're okay," he assured her. "But sometimes people have nightmares, or nightmares because they're hurting inside. And if you want me to make you some tea, I'd be happy to."

Dianne smiled. "That would be nice. And thank you. It's just that everything has been so stressful lately...."

"I know," Nicolas finished for her.
