~ CASIMIR ~

I was numb as I led her into the bathing room, my head spinning, but none of it touching me.

When she had left me back in the dining room I had felt relieved. But as the hours passed in the wake of her strange farewell, my uneasiness grew. Something wasn’t right, and I wasn’t sure what it was. The bond was dead—I kept it that way.

I was considering going to look for her, assuming she’d be in her chambers, or with Maya, but before I could make the decision—because in truth, I didn’t know what I was going to say if I did find her—Rake scratched at my mind.

‘What is it?’ I growled.

~ CASIMIR ~Jesse tensed at first and didn't look at me. Her body a rigid, resistant plank. But I kept my touch gentle and as she began to enjoy the touch, she slowly opened up, eventually going so far as to rest her forearms on my thighs and watch as I lathered, and rubbed, then used the cloth all over her.“Scoot forward,” I whispered, annoyed with myself because I meant it to sound stronger, but my voice was gone. Little more than a hoarse rasp. I cleared my throat and tried again. “Put more room between us so I can wash your hair.”She went very still. “You’re going to… wash my hair?”I grunted. She did as I had asked and scooted her ass forward.“Hold onto the sides and use my legs to lay back, tip your head back, so I can get water over it without getting it in your eyes.”There was a moment I thought she would refuse. She didn’t move. But just a

~ CASIMIR ~The combined pleasures of her enveloping my body as the water washed against my skin, the ripple and splash under her soft cries, and the sigh of her pink skin in the haze of the steam all conspired to steal my wits. Then she dropped her head and her hair parted, revealing the claiming scars, puckered and pink on the other shoulder and a jolt of need crackled through me.But I had a grip on myself this time. I had prepared for this. I knew what to do.Jesse and I were bonded, it was true. Claiming her had tied us together. We needed each other. It couldn’t be denied. But love? Love was no part of that. It would only complicate things and create

~ JESSE ~The next morning I lay in the meadow just beyond the cave entrance, in the grass, watching the clouds drift lazily overhead. It was bright, but the sun wasn’t quite hot enough to remove the chill from the breeze.Kind of like Cazz’s desire, I thought dryly. Plenty of blaze, but it doesn’t quite beat back the shadows. When I had woken this morning—alone—it was to a messenger sent by Maya saying that she had to undertake healer duties and we would have to wait until the following day to meet, so I’d suddenly found myself with freetime. After the day—and night—before, I decided that was a sign. I was still fortifying the chinks in my armor after the roller coast

~ JESSE ~I startled and whirled around to find Rake hurrying towards me, his face thunderous. Before I could respond, he was at my side, glaring down at me. “How did you even find your way out?”I blinked up at him, surprised by his anger. And a little irritated, too.“What are you worried about?” I muttered. “You said yourself, Cazz won't care what I do as long as he gets his puppies.”“Safely, Jesse. As long as you do it safely. And trust me, there is no way on God's green earth that Cazz thinks his Queen being out here alone, where

~ JESSE ~Rake’s expression reminded me of a checkout guy I had once seen at the supermarket trying to help an old lady—he didn’t want to discourage me, but he obviously thought I’d lost my mind.I gave him a look. “I’m not being unrealistic. I know I have a lot to learn. I’m not going to start issuing edicts. But… but I’m going to show up, Rake. And over time…. Over time I’m going to make a difference.”His face softened. “I love that idea. I do. But… Jesse, wolves are very different from people. We don’t think the same way. I mean, we can understand you, but… a wolf Queen isn’t like your human queens.”That&rs

~ CASIMIR (Later that night) ~ I stood half-crouched and poised to leap or shift, I wasn’t sure which. Neither was going to help. But it was instinct to search for a way out. My father stood a few feet away, arms folded and expression unimpressed. His eyes were the cold, cold blue of a winter snow cave when the sun shone behind it and bored into me, bright and piercing… and they were beginning to glow. “No,” I snarled. “GET OUT OF MY HEAD!” “Make me,” he muttered. I fought him as surely as I would any wolf that came at me with fangs and claws—sweating, grunting, heart pounding—but my body barely twitched because

I didn’t know what it was at first, but it woke me up and… and it got stronger the closer I got to you. And then when I got in here you were thrashing around and you kept saying no, and it sounded like… like…” she swallowed audibly.“What?” I snapped, not meaning to sound so cold, but I had a feeling I didn’t want to hear the answer to the question. And yet…She swallowed again. “You just felt

~ CASIMIR ~The matebond between wolves is a unique and powerful thing. I’d never denied that. My bond with Jesse was my third, but she was the first I had claimed.I told myself that was why I shivered when she whispered my name.I had her pinned to the mattress, covered, my hips between her thighs, my hands planted on the bed to brace myself, still trying to decide if I was clear headed enough to take her.I wanted her, desperately. The looming dark of that dream threatened to suck me back in if I slept. And having her warm softness nearby was soothing. But I felt… fragile. And uncertain if taking her would help that, or make it worse.

~ CASIMIR ~I was pretty sure if I didn’t get inside her, I was going to eat her alive.Scooting with her in my lap, still straddling me, I got her so both my knees and her back were flat against the wall. Then I flipped open the wide, leather cuffs that had been secured directly to the wall and first lifted one of her hands, to strap it in so her hand was levered above her shoulder, but with her arm comfortably bent so she could relax. Then I did the same with her other hand on the other side.So I straddled the banana-seat, while she straddled me and her hands were secured to the wall behind her.Her breasts rose and fell with her heavy breathing, and her eyes were bright with desire.Overwhelmed again with how much thought she’d put into this, for a moment I just took her face in my hands and kissed her. But that drew us together—my cock pressing against her, and I couldn’t resist rolling my hips, teasing

Was she serious? My heart was slamming against my ribs, and I was having trouble breathing. The room seemed smaller than I remembered because the walls were painted a dull black. But the tighter space than what I’d had down next to the Den just made it feel more intimate. There were two lamps, one on each end, and a chandelier high above. ~ CASIMIR ~I came out of the bathing room after a long bath rubbing my hair with a towel, to find my mate standing in the middle of the chamber with her arms folded and looking sternly at my daughter, who sat on the floor in nothing but a diaper, with her chubby legs straight out. She, too, had her arms folded and her lips pursed in the perfect reflection of her mother. The two glared at each other and half my heart went cold, while the other half wanted to splutter with laughter.“Abigail, I have told you—”“No!”Our daughter could only get her tongue around a few words so far, but

But she was sleepy because she’d just eaten and only yawned and cooed.“She’s a very calm baby,” Reeca commented from the other end of the couch, smiling. She loved babies, and had been so helpful when I was tired—and just for reassurance for me.She was a calm presence in any room, and with Abigail, she showed a lot of delight and joy that she seemed to stifle in other areas of her life.“Reeca,” I said carefully, because I’d b

~ CASIMIR ~I felt the moment the power went out of Jesse. The entire mountain felt it.I howled with triumph and shifted, sprinting towards the room, ecstatic when there was no sense of Maya gripping my mind or stealing anything from me. But of course, there was no power left for her to steal.I prayed and pleaded and ran, Rory and the others coming in my wake. And the moment I broke through that door in my wolf—the only power left to me anymore—everything slowed. Though my body whipped and my mind was singularly focused, it was as if everything happened in slow motion.I caught a bare glimpse of Jesse on the bed, and at first my heart leaped.
