It was hours of driving and wielding. I was pumping with adrenaline and fury, so even though I wearied, I was energized as well.

Poor Jesse’s body was so heavy and her heart so full, she slumped against me in the back seat of the vehicle, heavier and heavier, until I urged her to lay down with her head on my thigh.

“You can just give me your power and rest, beautiful,” I murmured, stroking her hair and staring out of the window as the city slipped past beside the highway.

I’d turned all the wolves away and helped her change into more comfortable clothes. She’d sighed with relief when she was out of that dress and into sweats and soft shoes. But the dark circles under her eyes worried me—along with how pale she looked.
