I am 16, my birthday is December 5th. I live in a small town in the blue ridge mountains. I grew up exploring the caverns and forests around this beautiful land. Stashing arrow heads in jars with plant clippings and moss, and other rocks that caught my attention. I grew up running barefoot in the moss and sweet mountain leaves that coat the ground. I went to school until about 3rd grade, but things got a little weird. I have always had this…voice in my head. She sounds a lot like me, but older. She knows more. The other kids made fun of me after a few years of me referencing the voice in my head. Parents stopped letting their kids play with me. Other than the voice, and some crazy dreams now and then, I have been your average, home schooled teenage girl.
At least, until a few weeks ago.I woke up at midnight, for whatever reason. My first thought was that maybe I had to pee? But no…. As I stood up and steadied myself, I was not in my room. I was standing, knee deep, in a small reflection pool at the base of a gentle waterfall.I had been here many times, exhausted from running through the forest, I would lay on the soft moss by the pool and dream of tiny fairies waging wars, lightning bugs dropping tiny magic light bombs that would disintegrate their goblin foe on contact. The forest surrounding this area kept out the bright streams of sunlight, offering a cool resting place for my tired body. But tonight, was different. The moon was high, and the wind was picking up. This was no ordinary wind, fingers, almost solid, blew through my hair, caressed my face, lifted my hands. Silver runes appeared on my skin, painful as though their were being etched. I began to slowly lift up, into the air. All at once, everything went hot, the clear sky turned red and hellish. I felt myself being pulled down through the bottom of the pool, my heart was racing, up until this point, something had felt so familiar about everything that was happening. But now I knew, the reflection world is not somewhere I should go, that place is for spirits, cursed souls, demons. How do I know this?“CHILD OF THE WOLF, BORN TO THE HOUSE OF STOLEN SOULS.”I couldn’t breathe, I was in the reflection of the pool, this universe had water in place of the sky. Somehow this didn’t seem to matter. My body had stopped. My breathing, my heart, only my mind was present, my eyes fixed on the fuzzy expanse of dark forest reflection before me.“DAUGHTER OF THE STOLEN MOTHER, AND THE CURSED ALPHA, KNEEL AND REPENT.”A force came over me, pulling me to my knees, throwing my arms open wide and arching my back to push my chest out. The runes appeared again, but this time with black circular markings on my chest. The pain blurred my vision more, but I could only scream in my mind. What the fuck is this dream? Why does it hurt so bad?The voice sounded again, but in my state of pain and confusion, it rattled around me, like a thousand booming voices that made up one massive entity.“A BLOOD OATH SWORN AND BETRAYED, A BLOOD CURSE LAYS CLAIM TO YOUR SOUL, YOU WILL FIND NO PROTECTION HERE. SEEK HE, THE DESTROYER, BOUND IN BLOOD. THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL IS DEATH, AND SO THE PRICE MUST BE PAID. NO COVEN MAY ACCEPT YOU; NO PACK MAY PROTECT YOU. PAY THE DEBT, OR SPEND ETERNITY IN REFLECTION.”Everything exploded around me, I was thrown straight up, back into my universe, but time was still moving so slow. When I finally burst through the surface, water suspended around me like little diamonds, the moon larger than I had ever seen it, and there was no longer pain. Then time resumed while I was distracted by all that beauty, and I was flung against the trunk of a tree, stealing the breath I hadn’t even got back yet.I struggled to get the muscles in my chest to work, willed my lungs to fill with air. As soon as I had taken a few heaving breaths, the nausea hit me. What the fuck was that? I need to wake up.“We are awake” A soothing voice whispered to me.“WHAT THE FUCK” I whisper screamed, I scrambled to my feet, a cold sweat setting in.“Listen Willow, I know this is scary, but everything will be ok if you trust me, ok?”And with that, pain like I had never known exploded over my body. Fire, breaking bones, ants crawling all over me, it felt like my body was being rearranged. But then it was over, I lay there on the forest floor, trying not to puke.“I am Athena, I live within you, we are as one.”I tried to speak, but it came out as a howl. I jumped up and backed away, finding myself against the same tree trunk from before. I knew her voice, but she had never spoke so directly to me before. “Willow, we are not children of your mother and father, we were adopted by humans. We are descendants of our mother, Bellona, a most powerful witch, who led her coven in war against our father. Our father was Gedeon, known for the hundreds of thousands of warriors he slaughtered in this universe, and many others. Gedeon was the keeper of many souls, punishment for the crimes they committed, that they may never move beyond this realm.”“Just shut the fuck up for a second please, why am I a dog right now?” I asked in my head.“FOOL” The forest floor shook with rage as a roar tore itself from my dog throat. “WE ARE NO MERE DOG, WE ARE THE WARRIOR SPIRIT OF A MIGHTY WOLF, AS BIG AS ANY ALPHA, STRONG LIKE OUR FATHER, CUNNING, LIKE OUR MOTHER. NEVER INSULT US IN THIS WAY AGAIN, LEST I ABANDON YOU TO THE SLAUGHTER THAT LAY AHEAD OF US.”“Oh…am I… is this a dream?” I was tentative about asking this time, maybe she would just throw our wolf body off a cliff or something to punish me, and I am not about that life.“No. Please save your questions, we do not have much time before they come for us. It is important that you know about the blood oath sworn between father and mother.”I paced over to the reflection pool to inspect myself as she told me the story. My body was massive and sleek. My fur was all black, with a mask of red around my eyes that looked like flames, going up my ears. My eyes were bright green, as they were when I was in my….human… form. The only other notable feature was a tiny silver moon, right between my eyes. It was so light, it sparkled like a jewel. I lay down on my wolf belly and stared at myself while Athena told me about our parents. Our people, both witch and wolf, hid from the world with a veiled universe. They created these veils with the permission of the God’s, once humanity started to populate our sacred lands. It allowed the slaughtering of innocent humans to be decreased, and allowed us to keep our lands sacred without the risk of discovery. But there was still war within the veil. Bellona led the Coven of Divine Spirit; their mission was to cleanse souls and guide them through to what comes next. Athena can’t tell me what that is. Gedeon would capture souls, he was an alpha warrior who formed an alliance with the Brethren of the Shadowmoon. The dark magic had driven him mad, to the point where he could not trust anyone. As a result, he killed his one true mate, his Luna. He ripped her heart out of her chest and gave it to the brethren for whatever rituals they desired. The darkness in his soul wanted only to feed. One dark night, as the coven traveled a war torn expanse within a no mans land portion of the veil, Gedeon ambushed Bellona and 7 other coven witches. They were brought to Gedeon’s’ lands, where the Blood Stalker Pack reigned. It was here, Gedeon executed the 7 coven sisters, and brutally raped Bellona. None of the spells Bellona tried worked to free her. The brethren had cursed the cells and walls of the castle, she could do nothing to free herself. Athena showed me, night after night, after his rituals with the brethren, a crazed Gedeon would visit Bellona in her cell. Covered in blood, and fully erect, he would pull her up from where she was chained to the floor, and fasten her to the wall. He clasped her arms wide, and above her head, and wrapped chains around her waist to help hold her up. If she was passed out, he would wake her by shoving his fingers in and out of her until she roused. He would stroke his massive length with his hand and tell her to beg to be set free, beg for her life. When she didn’t, he would bite her, where wolves would mark their female mates. It was not uncommon for species to mix, mate, and procreate, but forced mating was painful. Bellona would draw her knees to her chest, screaming in pain, and Gedeon would enter her. He would growl, holding his teeth into her neck to reinforce the mark, and thrust violently until he was done. This went on for many months, and Bellona became pregnant with “us”. One week before I was due to be born, Bellona’s Coven attacked The Blood Stalked pack in an attempt to save her. While they couldn’t breach the castle, they were able to take out the brethren. With the dark magic loosening it’s hold on Gedeon, and the castle magic weakened, Bellona was able to start regaining some strength. Gedeon, seeming to be emerging from some trance, ordered Bellona be taken to a room in his own chambers. Disgusted with himself, but not willing to release her in fear of retaliation, he wanted to force Bellona into an alliance. Bellona Agreed, if her child would be given over to the Coven, she would remain here with Gedeon, perform magic for him, and never turn against him.Gedeon knew that the only way to assure this was a blood oath. Bellona did not love him, and was not his one true mate, without a blood oath, he would not be able to trust any promise she made. And so, the blood oath was performed, two days before I was born, in a small ritual within the throne room of Alpha Gedeon’s Castle. Bellona knew she needed to gain the confidence of Gedeon, so once the ritual was complete, she took him to bed. She caressed him, extended her warm magic to soothe him.Two days later, a coven maiden pulled me from Bellona’s breast. Neither of us screamed. I nestled into the blankets and slumbered as the maiden bowed to Bellona and retreated. One single tear trailed down Bellona’s cheek, but otherwise she did not acknowledge any of it. In the weeks to come, Gedeon and Bellona formed a sort of timid friendship. Gedeon, being no longer fully mad, but still with a dark whisper within him. Bellona performed all that was asked of her, and never gave the blood oath a reason to warn Gedeon. One evening, Gedeon had sent his Beta, Agnar, to gather information on a pack to the North, who had just lost all their ranked members to battle with a rival pack. While they emerged the victors, it came at a heavy cost. Gedeon had planned on this night, to ask Bellona to help cleanse him of dark magic, lest he be plunged into madness once more. He was not sure if it was the souls he held captive, or the darkness that would never give him peace. He could hear it through the halls, in his bathroom, in his mind when he slept. Whispers of the dead and damned. Screams, demands for blood, the urge to tear limbs from bodies. He found Bellona in the throne room, placing protection spells along the walls as he had asked of her. Part of the blood oath was that Bellona would be his mate of sorts. Because the connection was made in dark magic, and force, it could never fully be completed. But this did mean she agreed to care for his needs, as the only person Gedeon could trust, given their bond. But the protection spells Bellona had been placing were not for Gedeon’s protection.Gedeon approached Bellona and unclasped her robes. She stood motionless and allowed him to completely undress her, then she undressed him. Soon after, Gedeon took Bellona on the floor of the throne room, frantic and heated. When he was done, he stayed inside of her, but rolled them both so that Bellona was on top of him, he began to ask what he intended. Would she help him cleanse the darkness from his soul? With a simple nod, Bellona summoned her robes to her and withdrew a glowing silver dagger. Without hesitation she plunged it directly into Gedeon’s heart, and twisted. Gedeon convulsed and spat up blood. Bellona stood, naked, blood and semen running down her legs. She guided Gedeon’s spirit to a place humans would better understand as hell. Athena won’t tell me its name yet. Afterwards, Bellona moved through the castle in a trance. The blood oath turning her veins black, poisoning her. She freed every soul, and with the last of her energy, she set the castle, and herself, to flames. After that day, the Blood Stalker Pack dissolved. Bellona’s Coven of witches moved through the pack lands while wolves tried to escape, cleansing them of darkness but removing any titles they held, cursing them to always serve under others. However, Agnar, Beta of the Blood Stalker Pack, was not present during this time. Having received word of the dissolution of his pack, and the circumstances surrounding it, he stayed with the Grim Fang Warrior Pack, and took over as their Alpha. Lonely, and bitter, having lost his one true mate during her attempts to escape the cursed pack lands, Agnar called upon the few Brethren of the Shadowmoon that were still scattered among the veil. Vowing to protect them in exchange for binding him to the blood oath sworn between Bellona and Gedeon. Agnar wanted Bellona’s daughter, in exchange for the downfall of his pack. She would belong to him, to punish, to kill, whatever he saw fit. In the event that he died before the price was paid, it would fall to his son, 5-year-old Elbrus, who was also bound to the oath. If the price Bellona named for her blood oath was the safety of her baby, then payment was due.Upon hearing of this binding, Bellona’s coven placed many enchantments on the baby. They made her powers dormant, until her 16th birthday, when her wolf would fully wake, and the Grim Fang Alpha would be able to scent her. The bind placed by the brethren would only grow stronger once her magic was detectable. In exchange for suppressing her magic, and placing her with humans, her wolf would have all the knowledge she would need to help her navigate the veil. The new Coven mother, Opalina, received a prophecy from the oracles. If Bellona’s daughter could safely reach Elbrus, son of Agnar, without being captured directly by his men, she may have a chance at dissolving the bind and forming an alliance with Elbrus. But surrounding this prophecy were several more prophecies of death, Bellona’s daughter unsuccessful. Only 2 paths thus far would lead her to absolution. With time running out before Agnars’ warriors reached the coven, Opalina took the baby, and left the veil. Among the humans, there was a law called “Safe Haven”, within 7 days of a baby being born, it could safely be abandoned at certain locations that held “baby boxes”. Opalina wept, knowing the hard road ahead for this new child. As a kindness, Opalina enchanted the baby to ensure she was placed with parent’s that the oracles saw in both of the prophecies where Bellona’s daughter was triumphant. After setting a series of anti tracer spells, Opalina placed the little baby inside the heavy metal door, and dissolved herself back into the veil before a piercing alarm sounded, alerting the fire house that a baby was in need of assistance.Chapter 2“WILLOW WAKE UP, NOW! THEY ARE COMING!” Athena shouted in my mind.I shook my head and stood, unsteadily on 4 giant paws. How the fuck was I supposed to work this body, and are “they” the pack warriors or the brethren, my parents? Fuck I guess this isn’t a dream. “What do I do?” I asked my wolf, feeling like an idiot“We are going to shift back into our human form, I will teach you a spell to clothe your body. We have breached the Veil, and they must not discover you have come into your powers yet. They may not even know who you are if the Covens protection still holds.Shifting back was uncomfortable, but less painful than last night, with only some of the nausea. “Willow, close your eyes and imagine the clothes you wore last night are piecing themselves back together on your body. Imagine them coming together exactly the way they were when you got into bed last night. Do this quickly. Once you have it, I will pull all of our energy to bring it into existence.”I did as A
I have been moved from cavern to cavern since my arrival here. There is a network of chambers, and each is subject to a different type of interrogation. Athena says that you are not supposed to be able to pass through each chamber if your intentions are not good, or at least neutral. But there are some types of magic that can trick the protection spells. I have no intentions exactly, I am waiting for Athena to provide some clarity on what we have to do next, but she mostly walls herself off in my mind to pass interrogation. They believe I have not come into my wolf yet, but that I will soon. The general consensus is that I will be placed with a pack as a servant, but that means lots of paperwork, and the pack has to approve my transfer, and accept financial liability for me.Since the wars have mostly ended, the biggest issue the Veil is faced with comes from dark magic, rogues, and pack disputes. There were others in the caverns with me, but none of us could look directly at each ot
I thoroughly scrub myself, top to toes, and lay back to let myself float. As I do, the water from above changes from a shower, to a circular curtain around the edge of the pool. Again, I wonder if this is me, or the magic of the caverns. I don’t have much time to think about it before a shadow figure appears behind the curtain of water. It startles me so much that I accidentally dunk my head back, and inhale a bunch of water. You know, like an idiot. I spring up from the water, choking and sputtering. I am trying to get my bearings, determine where the shadow has moved to. I don’t have to wait long before a massive hand lifts me from the water by my throat. The hand is hot, almost feverish, and I can feel claws threatening to puncture my skin. It’s a man that resembles a demon, his skin is blistering and cracking, revealing molten heat on the inside. Not a demon. A freakishly large burning man. Athena is not responding to my frantic calls. Fiery Gigantor brings me in close to his fa
4 years laterIt took the whole week before I begrudgingly told ransom everything I knew. In exchange, he told me the prophecy the pack elders received from a coven before I was born. They would face a choice one day. To accept the flaming wolf, or reject her. Acceptance meant war; rejection meant the entire pack would be wiped out after her death. Ransom says there is a lot more to it, but the elders advised that it would be harmful to the future if I were to learn the rest. Ransom thinks I am the flaming wolf because of my hair, and the red mask of flames on Athena’s face and paws. I am still confined to the immediate grounds and gardens around the pack house, and only the ranked wolves are allowed free access to the house. The younger wolves and families have been moved into the older pack house. Ransom says this is for safety reasons. I understand that, but I am lonely. He spends most of his time away from the pack, forging alliances, gathering intel. He met his mate right after
When I feel Seff’s claws retract, I jump up and run to Ransoms Suite, slamming the door and bolting every lock on it. I think he is still fighting Seff because I don’t hear him approach until a few minutes later. He knocks softly but I ignore it. My body is sore, and tired. I’m pissed and I only want to sleep. I conjure a soft nightgown and panties, dress myself, and drag the fluffy down comforter over me, shutting out the light. The first time I wake up, I don’t know what time it is, but I can feel Ransom holding me. He isn’t there when I wake up again. I take a long, hot shower, trying to wash off everything that happened. I have so many conflicting emotions. I wanted him, I’ve wanted a physical connection for so long, I just wasn’t ready to go that far all at once. My anger makes me lonely for Ransom, which is even more frustrating. I’ve healed fully already, my fingers poking and prodding, making sure the soreness is gone. I think about the night I accidentally walked in on Rans
I’m vaguely aware of Ransom carrying me to bed, I must have only needed a short nap, because it’s only an hour later when I wake up at 10 am. Ransom has left me a breakfast tray and a note. “Be back this evening, pack business. We WILL be eating spaghetti for dinner. There are some things I want to speak with you about. Yours, Ransom” I roll my eyes, the last time he left a message saying “There are some things I need to speak with you about.” I stressed for an entire week about what it could be. When he finally came back, he congratulated me on my training, and told me he thought I was ready to move up a class. I examine the breakfast tray, but my stomach isn’t happy with any of the selection offered. I grab a throw blanket from the living room and drape it over my shoulders, wrapping it around my body. When I peek my head out of Ransoms door, I can see down the hall that my door has been repaired. I pad as quietly as possible down the hall. No such luck, however, as Phoebe and K
Ransom came in later than expected, dropping into a seat next to her in the dining hall, and shoving spaghetti into his face like it was the first meal he’d had in weeks. When he was done, he gathered me into his arms and pulled me onto his lap. He scented me for a moment, and I wondered what might have happened today to trigger this behavior. He hadn’t said a word yet. Before I could ask, he scooped me up and headed upstairs. We passed Phoebe and Imogen, staring at us, open mouthed. Imogen is Walt’s mate. She is also a witch, and she has directed me in many matters of healing. “I will tell you everything later” I link to them both. Once we were safely inside his suite, Ransom locked the door and set me down on the sofa. “You don’t need to make a habit of carrying me everywhere. I am capable of walking, navigating, even running on my own.” I teased. But he didn’t smile at me, he had dark circles under his eyes, and his expression was pained. “I just need to be close to you sometime
It is hot, humid, and I am heavily pregnant. I have performed my Luna ceremony, and taken over the duties that come with the title. Many people are angry that an outsider claimed the title. But those people don’t know all that is to come. Ransom has been busy preparing for war, and I have been busy preparing for the baby. I want everything to be set up just right. When the time comes, I will have to leave him behind, and I do not know if I will ever hold him again. I want him to be able to learn about the time I was here, lovingly preparing for his arrival. To know that I will carry him in my heart. It’s a strange thing, to be a mother at 20. To be a witch and a werewolf, to never go home. I carry that sadness with me, but I will never bring that danger back to my human parents. I can love them from a safe distance, as I will do with my son. Phoebe brings me a sparkling water with a lemon wedge, and a big bowl of watermelon chunks. It’s the only things I can stomach these days. In
I felt light, as though no gravity weighed me down. I hadn’t been sleeping, but I was floating, dreaming in colors. Athena nudged my hand, drawing my attention to her wolf form. As I reached for her, a ball of light drifted towards us, expanding and blinding until it swallowed us, pulling us through to a warm, grassy meadow. Pushing up to my knees, I scanned the area, noticing how Athena trained her gaze on the wood line. She whimpered, and I followed her line of sight to see a woman emerge, and stop just beyond the trees, about fifty yards from where we stood. The blonde woman wore a loose flowing white gown, and shimmered in the low evening light. She smiled at my wolf, and held out her arms. Athena turned to me, and I realized then that I hadn’t heard her speak since we died. Realization washed over me, and I rocked back on my heels, sadness echoing distantly in my heart, like it was separate from my being, but I knew that this moment would hurt. She pressed her large furry head
I smelled the dungeon before I opened my eyes. My head throbbed, but I felt a surge of hope as I sensed magic thrumming through the air around me. I sat up, groaning as the change in position worsened the pain in my head. I felt around in my hair and located the knot, on the right side of my head, I must have been thrown in here, because the knot was raised and bloody, still not healing because of the wolfs bane. Reaching for the magic, I pulled it towards me, attempting to heal my head. Only it barely gave, and once it reached a certain point, it snapped back into place. The cells were protected by powerful charms, and would not allow me to use any magic here. “Psst!” someone hissed, and I squinted into the darkness, trying to refocus my vision. A few seconds later, Roland emerged from the darkness, carrying a flask and a gauzy bundle of fabric. Keeping his voice low, he crouched in front of the silver bars. “Drink this, quickly, before the other guards catch up!” Unscrewing its li
Heleos opened the passenger door of a sleek black Audi R8, and held it open for me. The windows were tinted heavily, and the windshield itself had some type of reflective tint on it. I buckled and examined the windshield as Heleos situated himself in the drivers seat.“Is this so the sun doesn’t burn you?” I asked. The garden had been heavily shaded when we’d toured it the day before, so I assumed he could be out during the day, just not in direct sunlight. “No, it’s so people can’t see in. Even wolves and other vampires have a hard time identifying faces through an obstruction like that. The sun doesn’t actually affect me at all. It would have, but several generations ago, the vampri found favor with the soul witches, who bestowed generational protection charms. Any vampri we make, or spawn, will receive the imprint of the charm, protecting them from the sun.”“Well, that’s convenient, what about garlic?” Heleos side eyed me as he pulled down the long, winding driveway. “Actually,
I woke up tangled in the sheets of the bed in my guest room, wrapped in a damp towel, with my still damp hair in a tangled mess around my face. Heleos sat in an armchair in the corner of the room, his feet propped on an ottoman. He held a small tumbler of blood in one hand, and a book in his other. He glanced at me briefly, snorted, then went back to his book, occasionally sipping from his glass. Wrapping the comforter around me, I dragged myself to the bathroom, showered properly, and emerged clad in a plus bath robe, with my hair wrapped in a towel."Not much of an improvement, but it's a start." Heleos nodded toward the closet, "I had the housekeeper order some things for you, they're hanging there. We will be meeting with a few of my trusted friends today, feeling out the extent of ground work we'll have to do in order to infiltrate the council and... cut out the infected members.""Infected?" That sounded ominous, and a little shivver trailed down my spine. Heleos snapped his bo
"You're staring, and staring is rude." Heleos hummed.I snapped my mouth shut and returned my attention to my food, letting my hair fall forward to help camouflage my blush. Heleos was eating blood out of a pristine white bowl, with a spoon. Of all the ridiculous, cringy things I'd witnessed since becoming a part of the supernatural world, this one was easily the most asinine."Can't you just... you know, drink it from a glass, or a blood bag, or ..." I trailed off. It wasn't exactly my business, but for some reason it irritated me. He rolled his eyes and the corner of his mouth tipped up, as though he were trying not to grin. "You have always hated it when I took my meals this way." His mask of indifference was exceptional, but something told me he was extremely pleased to have found a way to pester me. I picked at my steak and brushed off my irritation. "I don't hate it, I just wondered if you knew how stupid you looked, eating a bowl of blood. No wonder you live in isolation, I'm
"Please, have a seat." He said, casually, as if we were old friends catching up. I scented the air around me, but I could feel the protection charms around him, blanketing his true scent. I stiffined, yanking my hand from his."Who gave you those protection charms?" I demanded, readying for an attack. The most likely explanation was that he was already part of the vampri alliance with the shadowmoon, which meant I had walked directly into a trap."Your mother." He grinned widely, and aside from his cuspids, also known as canine teeth, being a little sharp, there was nothing alarming about his mouth. "Ah, don't worry, I won't use them on you, not unless you ask." He paused, thoughtful. "Not unless you ask, nicely." And he grinned again, tugging me to the sofa. It occured to me that I should shield myself, but a warm, relaxed feeling washed over me, and I found myself eager to hear him speak again."You are Heleos?" I asked, then without waiting for an answer, "When did my mother give y
I woke up nauseous, and perched on something uncomfortable. Sitting up, I realized I was in the back seat of a car, and Roland was driving. He glanced at me in the rearview mirror."We've been on the road for about two days, you've made good progress healing, but there are a few developments you have missed. The king has your friend, Phoebe, and is trying to use her to track you down, he also has your son, and Phoebe's daughter. I don't know what agreement he made with the Summit Mist alpha, but it does not seem that he objects to any of this.""Take me to the Quell, we have to go over a plan of attack before he finds me.""I'm afraid the attack has already happened." Roland sighed, "Are you hungry?"My stomach answered for me, it had been clawing at me since I woke, demanding my attention. Roland laughed, pulling off at the next exit, where a diner and two gas stations sat around a blinking yellow traffic light. We sat down and ordered, and Roland gave me the rundown on what he was a
Athena sprinted through the forest, pushing herself to top speed. The trees here were enormous, and several feed apart, without thick underbrush to snag us. Leaves and pine needles mixed with the damp earth and moss to form a soft, springy bed to soften the blow of our paws. I let her take full control, focusing on her senses. I'd always loved the smell of the forest, but as a wolf it was so much richer. Catching the scent of a deer, Athena whipped to the right, changing course, racing for the higher ground. The scent began to change as we crested the hill, blood tainted the deer smell, and it became harder to tell if it really was a deer. Athena slowed, creeping forward as she scanned the forest. The afternoon sun was low, offering a bright orange glow to the treetops, but the forest floor was growing darker. Wolves have much better vision in the dark than humans, but that didn't mean we couldn't be caught off guard. The wind shifted slightly, and a rotten scent that made the hair
My heart thundered in my chest as I sprinted through the forest. Every few seconds, a mage from the quell would pop up out of nowhere, and I'd be forced to throw up a shield, or change course. There was no escaping, no recanting the terms of our agreement. It had been a week since I came to them, asking for their assistance in the fight against the vampri and the shadowmoon cult. Their terms were reasonable. That I be trained, to tap into the true power inside me, instead of grasping at the edges of my power, to have a seat on the council, and an open line of contact with each pack for apprenticeships. This was my third day practicing shields and traveling, and I was barely making any progress. My head throbbed, pain radiating through my temples as I strained to channel all my energy into traveling. A hot, searing pain jolted through my body as I slammed into a shield held by one of the mages. Shit. I'd allowed my own shields to drop, and still wasn't able to travel more than once pe
