Chapter 2

I sighed and put my phone away.

Another person hurt by love. If there was anything I could do to help, I might as well.

Zac still had not responded to my messages or returned my calls.

Sally had already been cremated. I sent Zac one last message. 'I'll wait for you until the end of the day. If you don’t come by tonight, her ashes will be buried without you.'"

After all, it was the old family home, and keeping the deceased around too long just did not feel right.

Meanwhile, Zac’s relatives had already started gathering in small groups to play cards, with peanut shells scattered all over the floor.

I purposely sat far away from them. Noticing they were ignoring me and showing no intention of stirring up trouble, I sent the bodyguards at the door off in shifts to get some food.

The lingering smell of smoke in the house was giving me a headache.

I frowned, thinking of stepping outside for some fresh air, but then I heard a growing commotion approaching the door.

As I opened the door, I came face to face with Xena.

She had seven or eight people with her. She held a phone in one hand and gripped a stick in the other, looking fully prepared to cause trouble.

I was surprised. “Xena? What are you doing here?”

Xena was taken aback at first but then put her hands on her hips and shouted to the people behind her, "That's right, she's the mistress! Otherwise, how would she know my name?"

Before I could react, Xena slapped me across the face.

Having stayed up for days handling the funeral arrangements, I immediately saw stars and fell to the ground.

Seeing this, Xena screamed and lunged at me, grabbing my collar.

"My boyfriend isn’t even here yet, and you’re already pretending to be weak, you shameless woman!"

With that, she slapped me again, her sharp nails cutting the corner of my eye, causing blood to flow.

Not fully understanding what was happening and having been inexplicably beaten, my anger flared up. I got up and slapped Xena right back.

She held her face, staring at me in disbelief.

"You dare hit me? You, a lowly mistress, dare to hit the rightful woman?

"My boyfriend is the big boss of Quinn Corporation! And you, a country bumpkin living in this rural place, dare to seduce him, thinking you can climb your way up? Are you tired of living?"

Only then did I realize that her boyfriend was none other than my lawful husband, Zac.

At first, I thought she had mistaken me for someone else, but it turned out she had not.

Unfortunately for her, she was the shameless one she was talking about.

Given that we were in the middle of a funeral, I did not want to escalate things further, so I tried to calm her down.

“We’re in the middle of a funeral. It’s bad luck. You should leave now. We can sort this out after the funeral is over.”

Xena hesitated at my words, then looked up to take in the surroundings.

There was a memorial portrait hanging in the living room, and a small urn adorned with diamonds sat on the table, glinting in the light.

The relatives inside had stopped their card game and were watching the scene unfold with amused expressions.

Xena grew nervous, raising the stick defensively, "Don’t come near me! I’m just here to punish a mistress. This has nothing to do with you! If you touch me, I’ll call the police!"

The relatives remained still, their faces displaying a playful smile.

After a long while, Xena glanced at me. I was still lying on the ground, with no one offering to help. Suddenly, she realized something. She pointed at me and burst into laughter.

"Shameless woman, look at you! Even your own family won’t stand up for you. Who’s going to help you now? Watch me deliver justice today!"

Xena glanced at the memorial portrait and then at the gifts scattered around the room.

She sneered, "The person in the photo is your mother, right? And all these gifts on the floor are from my boyfriend, aren’t they?"
